โ™ซ Ruby Mae โ™ซ

The last record I was sort of at the end of

my rope.

And we desperately needed a break

so that summer

we took about a month off

I set up a small studio

and I just started making demos, just started

kind of doing it for myself

just to keep things going.

I think sometimes taking time off feels dangerous to me

because

I just like playing music, it's just what I do, I'm addicted to it.

And what I noticed, what happens to bands

that, quote-unquote "take time off"

they're not as good when they come back.

For us just like keep that evolution going,

let you audience grow with you,

and grow up with you,

and--and at some point grow old with you.

It's that clichรฉ where, it's kind of like a marriage.

You got to reinvent ways to fuck or something.

You know, it's the same thing with like writing songs and being in a band together.

We're like an old race car, that way,

you got to keep it tuned up, or it's just gonna sit there and rust.

โ™ซ Stop When the Red Lights Flash โ™ซ

Because the last two records were

made pretty much in a studio atmosphere only

we really, what we wanted to do is get into

a room together and start patching up the songs together.

Just something that sounded more

just like stripped down rock'n'roll.

โ™ซ Wow! That's Loud! โ™ซ

โ™ซ Stay the Night โ™ซ

That collaborative effort, it just sort of like

always being together with each other and playing

like the way we used to do it

in the practice room first and then

once you're ready, then you go recording.

โ™ซ Kill the DJ โ™ซ

Stacked our flags up and it sort of damped the room

and made our roof dead, it's kind of a sweat box sort of

you know, very venereal, very uh--

very up-close and personal.

โ™ซ Dirty Rotten Bastards โ™ซ

There was a sort of looseness that we were allowing ourselves to have.

We used to playing off of everybody else, you know

you're just kind of shooting from the hip with instinct.

I think that allowed us to

reach into areas that we might not have done.

Well, when--when did Nimrod come out? '97?

- '98? - '97.

I was working at the record store when it came out.

"Lyrical nightmare".

The record?

I had half, it was, it was 18 songs

18 and then--and then an extra 4.

I just had to write lyrics in the studio

but then I vowed to myself,

"I would never go into the studio without lyrics

ever again."

โ™ซ Dirty Rotten Bastards โ™ซ

The songs are like a form of chaos

that you can't control.

It's a form of intelligence that maybe

you only understand

and you hope that someone else can understand.

And you can be anyway you want.

You can be as grandiose as you want

or you can be as down in the gutter as you want.

It's just sort of whatever

emotional freeway that you're on at the time.

โ™ซ Missing You โ™ซ

You can like, be--but, you can probably go on your verse right after that

and then use that as sort of

bridge instrumental bit or something.

That could be good--a cool thing, though.

It really could man, you know, if--if

you know, we put Trรฉ behind it to just fucking go nuts.

I'm not a bub gone for an easy A.

โ™ซ Missing You โ™ซ

Donkey niblets!

I thought in the middle it was really good.

Everything was important about making this record.

And having completely different atmospheres

so we were at the beach for a while.

We were in Oakland for a while

which is its own environment

you know, I always kind of call Oakland as

sort of like the Detroit of California.

You just got a different vibe when you change towns,

and change feels, you know.

You get out of your everyday thing, and for me lyrically

a list of ideas just starts to pile up.

When you travel

as a band, even if it's just as going down to Southern California,

I mean let's face it, this is our gang, man

you know, it's empowering

and it gives you a swagger, and it gives you

I don't know, it gives you a reason to

feel badass and I think everybody needs that.

โ™ซ X-Kid โ™ซ

Oh!

Goddammit!

Fucking

second day in the house!

And you can make it how you want it.

Did you get a shot of...?

Smoking, smoking seaweed!

Oh my God!

What the fuck is that?

โ™ซ Hotfoot Jamboree โ™ซ

I think if everybody in Green Day was a beverage

Mike would be Moonshine.

Billie Joe would be

the kind of champagne that only dudes that are on their own jets can get.

I'd be like a big mouth 40 ounces.

And Jason would be

"Romeo and Juliet."

Nah,

Jason would be a Sazerac.

โ™ซ Carpe Diem โ™ซ

I'd love to do the shows, but

I say if we do it, we got a fucking metal detector there

and walk people in that way

and just--just do it the safe way, you know.

It sounds, it's a little weird, but it's like

you know, book the show for free.

The idea of all these songs coming out

I would rather not play 'em if that's--play live actually if that's the way it's gonna be.

I mean, I'm just afraid of all these songs coming out, you know, the really shitty version.

It's just a matter of, you know, what are we wanting? Are we wanting to just say "fuck it"?

- That's what we would have to do. - That's what I'm saying.

Well, small clubs, you know, if we have enough guys there.

I'd definitely go in and then--and

I've told people not to put their fucking phones when they have.

I--I'm not gonna worry too much about

you know, a cellphone camera.

Well, there's nothing trifle so far on this record

so, fuck it.

What are we doing next week?

We got pyro?

Boom!

But you're heavily recommending we cancel the show?

I--I, you know, I wish I could assure you that there wouldn't be any problems

but, you know, I don't know either.

It's like, you know, when--you're like you hold on to your baby for so long

and then you're ready for it to go

and it's like, this time we kind of

we--this is the first show we have

since

this is the first time in fucking 20 years that we aren't

inviting people into the actual process.

This is not a fully thought-out thing yet.

This is sending the baby down the corner to buy cigarettes.

Yeah.

- Yeah. - "Hey, come back with the cigarettes!"

And the dime bag.

We're playing our brand new shit right now, so.

Alright, this song's called Nuclear Family.

Let's go fucking crazy, alright?

โ™ซ Nuclear Family โ™ซ

90% of the people that went there expected to get like

Green Day plays the hits, you know

in a bar.

Should we play Fuck Time and everybody doing the grabbing pull?

It's a little rape, people, let's go for it!

โ™ซ Fuck Time โ™ซ

It's really hard to play one new song that nobody knows

but to play 17

18 new songs

I mean, that's enough to kind of like--kind of warp you for a week.

'Cause I kind of forgot, "Oh this is the first time people are hearing

- this shit" - Yeah.

Now we've been sitting here, listening to it

for months, like, I kind of developed like a depression.

A little bit I had like a

post-traumatic

gig

thing.

- Christie Road! Christie Road!

- Christie Road! - No!

It's all new shit.

Fuck the past. Think about now, think about the future.

That's all you need to worry about.

Some guys can't shut up about it

you know, as much as I love 'em, I just want them to fuck off sometimes.

You know, it's like, "if you yell at Christie Road one more time,

I'mma fucking hit you with my bass".

Go back to 1992 for a minute.

โ™ซ Wow! That's Loud! โ™ซ

I know we were--we were saying "let's not play any old stuff", but it's almost...

Turned out great.

Yeah, I think it was fine

the only thing that was--that, I think, that freaked me out about it

after was that

we played it and--and the whole place exploded.

โ™ซ Hitchin' a Ride โ™ซ

โ™ซ See You Tonight โ™ซ

They came in batches.

Like letters, like

like puppies, these songs.

I just didn't know it wasn't gonna stop.

Next thing you know, we've got a magnetic board with

more songs that I have teeth.

โ™ซ Drama Queen โ™ซ

I looked up and I noticed I had about

sixty-five songs.

I was just like "this is a double album"

Woah, shit, the way we were going this is turning into a triple album.

Once they said, "Oh, maybe we'll do a three-record set", it's like

wow, you know, that--how are we gonna pull that off?

If it's just crazy enough that might do it, then why the fuck shouldn't we do it?

It's always worked for us in the past.

One thing we could do is make one--like

let's say like 1 and 3 are sort of the poppier ones

and 2 is the fucking, the weird one.

I mean there's that, where each record

it's like, it's distinctive in its own

personality.

In the industry, they trying

sequence that for like,

"Okay, this one's wow, this one will keep you in the--this is the hit

the rest is filling", you know.

They threw a ballad

threw a ballad at track 7.

Track 7's always a ballad.

And then they end it with some bullshit.

Most records you don't get to the end of 'cause it sucks.

It's kind of like--like Star Wars

Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi

but with Return of the Jedi being really good.

โ™ซ The Forgotten โ™ซ

It's a viper snap?

They're too many!

Shit!

โ™ซ Fuck Time โ™ซ

Dude, that's fucking rocking tambourine play!

Dude, fucking high-five on that shit.

- Tambourine's hard too! - That is hard.

Let's try to think about tambourine tracks.

You got to be able to like

be fucking tripping on mushrooms and listening to your own shit

'cause the tambourines are gonna come fuck you up--at you when you're on mushrooms.

That's all you're gonna hear.

Better be good.

Either don't put any tambourine on the record

or stop taking mushrooms.

Or get the tambourine really good

and still take mushrooms.

โ™ซ Fuck Time โ™ซ

That was awesome!

- That was fucking killer! - Yes.

I-I literally have like a fucking

like a mouse fart with the base in my cans.

Same here.

I have uncranked all the way

and it is still very gentle.

Come up in here Earl, for this kind of bullshit!

I'm a fucking professional!

You want me to lay my shit down? You better fucking fix it!

Motherfuckers would kill to be with me, I'm the motherfucking best!

- You hearing yourself in the cans? - I haven't got shit!

โ™ซ Oh Love โ™ซ

โ™ซ Nightlife โ™ซ

Yeah, yeah!

Good, we're in a studio in Austin

and uh--we're just kind of, you know, screwing around.

And rehearsal and jamming, jamming on this stuff.

Just kind of fucking around.

โ™ซ Nightlife โ™ซ

โ™ซ Wow! That's Loud! โ™ซ

The last time that we played and recorded songs live for people

was in the Kerplunk!

and Dookie days, so

kind of like a throwback and sort of like being in a new band.

Those were good litmus tests.

You learn more about the songs

a lot faster

by playing in front of a group of people

than you do recorded version.

Playing in clubs is really important to us because

it just keeps us energized.

We were just kind of basically treating ourselves like an opening band.

We needed to scare the shit out of ourselves

a little bit.

And, I mean, it was talking about throwing your entire band into a freezing-cold pool.

We were so used to presenting ourselves before

for a many years, you know

especially in the last eight years, we really knew we had a presentation.

This time we had nothing.

It was back to that "okay, prove it to me".

People were just kind of

listening.

And makes you freak out that people don't freak out.

We've actually made the progress that we would have made as

like being a young--young kids in a band

in the sense that like you play one show and then you

you really stew on like

what you did wrong and what you did right.

You try and improve on those little areas and improve the setlist.

You know, there's just something to be learned from it.

"Hi, I'm Rob Cavallo,

working on this--working on a session right now

just producing, that's all."

It looks good, check him out.

This working, huh?

โ™ซ Carpe Diem โ™ซ

Rocking.

- Yeah. - Good shit, man, good shit.

What we're literally dealing with it's like a new sound.

- Yeah. - And it's fucking with my head.

It's fucking with my head.

It's a sound that doesn't need to be mixed.

It'll fuck with you head 'cause you'll see this as a small sound

- but it's not though. - Yeah.

You know what the best way to think of it is, like

- how dirty was Back in Black? - I know, totally.

That it's not, it's clean as fuck.

In a way, you'll have to always remember like

how each hit of every instrument is actually super important

and they add up to one thing

it just won't ever sound truly complete

then when you get it done, it's like wow.

That's a big, powerful statement.

Of simplicity, you know.

โ™ซ Walk Away โ™ซ

His way of making records is to immerse himself in them.

That's what we needed, we needed that, you know

that fifth Beatle.

He heard the new material

he totally got it

he got really excited by it

and then he just kind of rekindled the friendship.

After that too, you know

and then we really wanted to record our record in Oakland and

he came to Oakland the whole time

so it was good, it was good to bring him back into the fold

bring him back on to the team.

It's kind of in a way, it's the closest to sort of Dookie era of sound

where it's like, you know

bass drums, guitars, and vocals in the lead

and that's like pretty much it.

However, it's also not Dookie in the sense that

these guitars sounds are different, they're sort of less distorted

and in a way it leaves more room for drums and bass and kind of a sexier groove

or ante-rock'n'roll feel.

I mean, you hear every snap of every picking across the strings

every flicker there is on the drums and bass

it's just

really pure.

โ™ซ Troublemaker โ™ซ

Fuck it.

โ™ซ Stray Heart โ™ซ

- Dad, we don't want you to leave! - Alright.

Alright, my friends are saying, "Where's Mike?"

"We got to play and we need a bass player, dude!"

And--and do you need me?

They might need you tomorrow, call them.

Can I have my microphone and sing after?

Well, that is yet to be determined, buddy.

Possibly.

I'll see you in a couple hours, okay?

- I don't want you to leave! - I know, watch your fingers, little

smashing in the door.

"Why do you have to go work, dad?"

So that I can make you miserable

and other people can be happy.

We're trying to remember that time we were on acid.

I know this story already!

Me and Mike dropped acid

and we're fucking walking into the park, we're both 18 years old

and walking into the park, and we're just giggling our asses off

walking through, and we would go, "Let's go down to the store over by BP!"

"And let's--let's go get--get a pack of cigarettes and a--a couple sodas."

"Right, okay."

So we out there and fucking--we put the...

and we're just kind of--

put everything, we asked for uh--

we asked for a pack of cigarettes and put the sodas on the table

and the guy was like, "Dude, do you have any ID?"

And Mike's like, "Fuck, no... I..."

"you know, I don't have any ID, man, just sell us the cigarettes, man."

And he's like, "I can't sell you cigarettes, you're not 18, we have no ID."

And then we're like, "Oh man, come on, can't you sell it to us?"

And he's like, "No, no ID, no ID."

So we just left all bummed out and Mike's like,

"Man, see it gets kind of a bummer."

"What we should have done was just like

put out the money

like that and then the guys puts

his hand down to get it

and while returning, fucking stick a knife and we grab his head

pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow!"

โ™ซ Sex, Drugs and Violence โ™ซ

I don't want to bug you guys out

there's an artist downstairs, they might want to come up and say "hey".

- Who? - Keith Richards.

- You're lying. - No, I'm serious.

Okay, um.

Certainly not.

- Oh, fuck...

Alright, that just completely changed my train of thought altogether.

Shit!

Shh! Don't tell him I have his amp!

I think for the um--

for the show they were going to do

we just try to think of a setlist if we do

um

maybe pepper it with some old stuff a little bit more.

Kind of cool if we do like the first three

and then like throw in like Welcome to Paradise or something?

It's a live show, it's a small room

there's gonna be variables, there's gonna be audibles, there's gonna be shit happening

I just want to make sure that I get

everything to where--it's like we're in a relaxed frame of mind.

Okay, they're ready when we are.

Are you guys ready?

I'll be appearing in just a moment.

We're playing a whole fucking brand new songs tonight.

Fuck it, you know, it's like people fucking hang on the show

like it's a sacred cow, but fuck that shit.

I think cows should be eaten

and we're eating and we're feasting on one right now.

Actually no, I'm a vegetarian.

Just kidding.

That's brutal, it's awesome.

- It's fucking... - So cool.

sex and...

- sex, chocolate and murder. - And violence?

Yeah, it's--

- But you could dance to it! - Yeah!

โ™ซ 99 Revolutions โ™ซ

I ain't dropped out of high school for this!

In your spare time, you got to do something, you don't just sit there.

You got to do something.

I'm like a kid, I just want to play with the box.

I love new drums.

We have a room at the studio we call "The Library".

And we're constantly learning whether it's about Sir Isaac Newton

or

the history of the steam donkey.

Whatever it is, we're learning stuff in there.

Mostly music-related, but

you know, sometimes completely

just random

nonsense.

I'm sorry, the window's closing.

I know, you might be able to put a hand through and get my handjob.

We want the wrecking ball!

โ™ซ Kill the DJ โ™ซ

I think that's an underlying theme

throughout this whole record

is that there's a fourth member.

It is a different feel

on the right side of your speaker.

It's all Jason White.

It's showtime, Jason, it's showtime!

He's been playing with us for over ten years now

so we just thought,

"Why not Jason become ยกCuatro!?"

โ™ซ Lady Cobra โ™ซ

Alright, I'll throw down on the solid, on the lead right here and then just flap it over.

Put 'em both together.

One on our left, one on our right.

This is the fun stuff.

That came out good.

- That's just so wrong. - Feels like I'm trying to ride a brontosaurus.

Sounds like a chainsaw!

It does, it's great.

Makes me think of that band Jackyl.

We have the chainsaw!

I was thinking the same fucking thing.

I think a lot of people, when they think about like musicians, they think,

"Oh, they're living in the ivory towers and

and like sitting by the pool doing your nails and

you know

getting there

cocksucked by Victoria's Secret models or whatever

but that's not always the case.

You can't expect to get anything done if you don't show up.

Is this thing on?

Isn't this nice?

This cool air, right?

Stage

there's lights.

There's the band.

We're building a club right now

and play in it tomorrow.

Hello?

We're getting kicked out of here for sure.

That was good!

Hello?

Hey!

This is--this is me.

No, really important, I have some--

Okay, I've something for--

Okay.

Okay babe, I'm playing a show at the Oakland Arena tonight.

The last show we played was...

It was Austin, Texas a couple weeks ago

for about 700 people.

The show before that was for

about 120 people.

And now

we're gonna go play for about 20,000 people.

Jason White

Jason White can't be here tonight because he

well basically he fucking pisses us off so...

We kicked him out of the band.

Jason couldn't be here tonight because he listens to The Bomb, baby.

โ™ซ Basket Case โ™ซ

Can't hear me at all.

'Cause you're my bitch.

- I chew gum all time. - That's pretty obnoxious.

Ew!

โ™ซ Nightlife โ™ซ

Alright.

There anyway?

- I do it all the time. - Spit that all over.

It's good for your--it's good for your vocal chords.

But then you get all spitty.

- That's what you're supposed to-- - You, like, choke on it.

No, you don't.

No, it's uh--

- it lubes you. - Ugh.

What's going on in there?

I don't think we've ever

written about this much sort of desire.

Many of our songs

that are about infatuation

that we've written in the past

and I'm talking years ago

but I think this is the first time

where, here's songs about fucking

it's an adult theme

kind of

getting lost in your impulses.

It's important to always try to write

and tell the truth about songs that only

people think about

but they don't have the balls to actually talk about.

โ™ซ Makeout Party โ™ซ

โ™ซ The Forgotten โ™ซ

โ™ซ Dirty Rotten Bastards โ™ซ

So if you look at kind of what we got going on here

like, this is like not vintage Green Day

but it's just like fun, it's just like "give me life".

Just take that huge breath and say "yeah".

- Yeah, yeah, yeah. - And then this is the fucking dirty record.

Yeah.

And then eventually kind of

go into something that's sort of more

into like a--like a um

redemption or something.

You know, you're going like,

"Give me life!"

"Fucking mid-life!"

Then "Oh God", you know.

- Yeah. - And it's like

reality, so

that's kind of what

the way I sort of look at the three records.

Yeah.

โ™ซ Wild One โ™ซ

I think there's things that this band can do and Billie can do

as a songwriter that

people still don't know about.

It's everything you fill in there like from the band's entire career, but it's brand new.

It's serious and dark.

It's light and fun.

It's everything rolled together and it's all--a whole new

character of Green Day that people had never heard before.

That I've never heard before.

It's interesting how things started off as stripped down

but then

ends up becoming something so epic.

I'm having the kind of excitement right now that

that we did have when we put out Dookie or American Idiot.

I just feel like there's something really special that happens

when we're firing on all cylinders like this

and when you see the arc of the three of these records

you're going to fully understand

where Green Day was at, at that point of their career.

โ™ซ Kill the DJ โ™ซ

โ™ซ Stay the Night โ™ซ

What's wrong with this picture?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this picture.

โ™ซ Amy โ™ซ

When it starts out it's just, you know

guitar strings, and wires, and amplifiers and

drum skins and a fucking wood

and it's wood, and metal and skins and shit, you know

and electronics and it's like a lot of dials

and a lot of tinkering and a lot of

work with your hands.

The weird thing is that you have all that happening

and we're struggling with these flimsy instruments

called guitars and other kinds of stuff

and then all of a sudden

you're wondering if all that shit you did

will move people

if it adds up to something.

When it does

it's fucking amazing

'cause, like, who made up this shit about, you know

wires and wood and skin and

the electronics.

It's fucking weird that it turns into this

stuff that just moves us

it's really wild.
