[theme music]

[children chattering]

[screaming] I'm free!

[screaming]

[laughing]

[instrumental music]

[air hissing]

[laughing]

- Hi, mom! - Hi, girls!

[music continues]

[woman screams]

Aah!

[sobbing]

[gasps]

Little holiday cheer?

Wanna give me some of that?

No, this is a little too rich for you, honey.

You alright? You look a little tired.

I'm fine. Not a care in the world.

Did you eat? I bet you need some breakfast.

Ah, no, thanks. I'm in a fast for a year or so.

Say, don't you have school to go to or something like that?

Something like that. School, then a checkup.

Well, then go and be brilliant

and say hello to Dr. Clark for me.

Are you sure you're okay?

I'll be fine.

Be good, dad.

[instrumental music]

Holiday spirits.

Go without guilt.

Yeah, right, like I'm just gonna sit there

and let her rag on me like that.

I heard you started it.

Oh, please! Good friend you are.

Yeah, sure, you're right. I must be a total jerk.

Well, not a total jerk.

If this doesn't make David Silverman take notice

I don't know what will.

It's just a dance.

Besides with legs like that, you don't have to worry.

In fact, why don't you go without the dress?

That way he'll notice for sure.

[chuckles] 'Oh, you think so?'

This new cut doesn't work at all.

Well, I can't understand why you're so hung up about it.

I think it looks great.

I'm not hung up. I just don't wanna advertise.

- Advertise what? - My mutant forehead.

[sighs] It's just a little scar.

Easy for you to say.

Hey, I'm, I'm music chairman at the dance tonight

so pick me up at 7:30 or you're vaporized.

[instrumental music]

[wheels rattling]

Top of the line, state of the art.

I take it my checkup went okay?

Mm-hmm.

- How's your dad? - Alright.

It's tough for him.

You know being a single parent's no day at the beach.

'Your mother and he were quite a pair back in the '60s.'

- She meant a lot to him. - I never knew her.

Seems like he can never forget her.

I guess that's the way it's supposed to be.

But it's bad sometimes.

He's all alone.

[phone ringing]

Yeah, I should give him a call.

There's something else.

[intense music]

I've been having these dreams.

'Really intense and violent.'

I see.

'They're about accidents and people getting hurt.'

Me getting hurt sometimes.

Not just just monster in the closet sort of things.

They seem like they're really happening..

...until I wake up.

Well, sooner or later, it happens to all of us.

- What does? - 'Life.'

I mean, adult life.

And when we're kids, we have nightmares

about things under our bed or..

...being naked in school.

'But it's nothing compared to the real world'

'of money, jobs, responsibility'

the threat of nuclear disaster.

As we grow older, our nightmares change

and we see things as they really are

and our subconscious complains.

It's nothing to worry about. You're just growing up, Amy.

- It's normal then? - I promise.

Thanks, doc.

[chuckles]

[children laughing]

- Hi, mom! - Hi, girls.

[continues laughing]

No! Little girl, don't!

[instrumental music]

[screaming]

[screams]

[crash]

[screaming]

[screaming]

[gasps]

Eight o'clock? Damn!

Jill?

Oh, geez, I'm sorry.

(Jill on phone) 'Sorry about what?'

I-I was studying. I guess I nodded off.

Look, give me ten minutes to get ready. I'll be right over.

'I don't understand.'

We're going to the dance, remember?

'Very funny.'

What?

Look, I thought you were looking forward

to this, Miss Music Chairman.

'Time to show off those hot legs for a certain senior.'

Why are you doing this, Amy?

'I thought we were friends.'

[intense music]

[sobbing]

Amy, try and relax.

I can't.

These dreams are getting worse and worse.

More people are getting hurt in them.

Look, it's only a dream.

No, it's not. There's more

Look, you're gonna be a senior next year, right?

You're thinking about college.

You're worried about your future

and the stress and the pressure is manifesting--

No! The...things happening in my dream

are affecting the way things are here now.

I don't understand.

I have this friend.

Jill.

Oh, Jill Scully. Sure, I know her.

Right. She's my best friend.

I should know a lot about my best friend, okay?

'So I go to visit her this morning to find out'

'why she was so weird on the phone last night.'

I go to her house.

I knock.

She answers..

...and she's in a wheelchair.

- Right. - No, not right.

She wasn't in a wheelchair yesterday.

I ask her what's wrong and she slams the door in my face.

Amy, Jill's been in a wheelchair practically all her life.

No, that's not right!

I have known her all my life.

She's never been in a wheelchair.

I know that.

Hmm, okay.

Oh, God, I'm not going crazy, am I?

What you need is a good night's sleep.

- Sleep? I don't need sleep. - You have to sleep.

I'm gonna give you something to calm down those dreams of yours.

What about reality?

First things first.

You need to get a good night's sleep

and then we'll talk again tomorrow.

And if you're still feeling the way you feel now

'then we'll take stronger steps.'

[intense music]

[sobbing]

[sniffles]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

[children laughing]

- Hi, mom. - Hi, girls.

[woman screaming]

No!

[sighs]

[dramatic music]

The little girl was me!

(male #1) 'You're the spitting image of your mother.'

'You know that?'

With you around, I really don't need any pictures of her.

I just keep that one for special occasions.

Why didn't you tell me how she died?

What are you talking about I did.

It was an accident. A stupid accident. I--

And you told me I was in the car with her

and we hit a tree and--

- That's right. - That's a lie!

[glass shattering]

That's not what happened at all!

It's not even close.

Jill and I, we were playing in front of the car.

Mom was hanging a plant on a ladder.

I threw the ball into the car and I tried to get it.

[sniffs] And somehow I pulled the brake out.

The car rolled, i-it hit the ladder..

...and mom fell.

She fell and broke her neck.

It wasn't an accident. It was a nightmare!

[sobbing] It was my fault.

I killed her and you never told me--

No, no, sweetheart, it was an accident.

Oh!

How could I tell you?

'You were just a little girl.'

A beautiful little girl

who had no idea what she had done.

[sniffles]

'I'll share a nightmare with you.'

The day that it happened, right

I'm going on a business trip.

So I tried to put aside all the fears

that every father with a beautiful wife and daughter

has when he has to leave them for even a second.

I'm at the airport..

...and I get the old "Ben Collins

white courtesy telephone, please."

I figured

I forgot my toothbrush or something, right?

'Not even close.'

More like, "Excuse me, Mr. Collins.

"This is Dr. Clark.

"Your wife, Emily..

[sobbing] "...has had a freak accident.

And could you please come home?"

[sighs]

I was just trying to protect you

from having to live with that all your life.

Daddy, I had a right to know.

How didyou find out?

I dreamed it.

You what?

[door opens]

Hi, are you ready for our jog?

Jill..

Amy, I knew about the accident.

I mean, I was the one that called your father

at the airport.

'But he was only trying to save you'

'from a lifetime of unnecessary guilt.'

I dreamed it just the way it happened then?

Yeah, well, there's no mystery to that. You were there.

It was a memory that resurfaced from your subconscious.

'No, I-I'm not buying that crap, doc.'

'There's more to it than just remembering.'

Jill is one of the little girls in the dream.

She's not crippled anymore because last night

when I dreamed about it, the car didn't hit her.

Jill's never been a cripple.

Last night I kept the other little girl

me, from hitting her head.

This morning I woke up and my scar was gone.

Amy, you've never had a scar.

That's your point of view.

Things are different for me because I changed them.

Look, Amy, you're letting this thing get out of control.

No!

It's exactly the opposite.

'I'm incontrol.'

Don't you see?

If I do this right..

...I can bring back my mother.

[intense music]

I'm coming, mommy.

I'll stop the car, I promise.

[instrumental music]

[children laughing]

Little girl! Amy, stop!

[tires screech]

[knock on door]

Yes?

(female #1) 'Honey, are you alright?'

Who is it?

It's me, silly.

Who'd you expect it to be?

Mother?

Oh, it worked!

It worked.

What worked?

Sweetie, are you okay?

Yes.

I love you, mom.

I love you.

I love you too.

Where's dad?

- What? - Where's dad?

Is he working late?

Amy, stop it.

Stop what?

Come on. Where is he?

I'm going to make an appointment with Dr. Clark for you.

Why?

Mother, please. Where's dad?

Why are you doing this?

Your father's dead.

You know that.

No!

Years ago!

It happened the same day that car almost hit me.

Your father was on his way to Phoenix.

Just a business trip.

A small plane was off course.

It was a mid-air collision.

[sobbing] No!

Oh, no!

[sobbing]

Like mommy and daddy always say..

[laughing]

...accidents happen.

(man on PA system) 'Shift commander, report for debriefing.'

'Shift commander, report for debriefing.'

'Command unit six, report.'

'Command unit six, report.'

[military band music]

'Level one, electrical repair crew. Check..'

[indistinct announcement]

[device beeping]

'...this is battlefield to command four message.'

- 'Standby to copy.' - Standby to copy.

(man on PA system) 'Message follows, Tango-Foxtrot-Baker-Charlie'

'Alpha-Tango-November 8-3-Oscar-Delta.'

'This is not an exercise. Repeat.'

'This is not an exercise.'

[music continues]

'Turn key to standby on my mark.'

'Three, two, one, mark.'

- 'Roger, key to standby.' - 'Roger, key to standby.'

[alarm blaring]

(man on PA system) 'And missile enabled.'

[beeping]

- 'Roger, missile enabled.' - 'Missile enabled.'

(man on PA system) 'Standby for large countdown.'

'Five, four, three'

'two, one, launch.'

[explosion]

[eerie music]

[sighs]

T-F-B-C-A..

'...T-N-3-O-D.'

[dramatic music]

Today it's Springwood.

Tomorrow the world.

Ka-boom!

Your mother called me this morning

and said you're not speaking to her.

- I can't. - She's very concerned.

She knows something isn't right.

Now..

Are we still having the nightmares?

Yes, but..

But what?

Come on. Let me help you.

But the nightmares have changed.

Okay, they've changed in what way?

They're not my dreams anymore.

I don't understand.

I-I'm dreaming about people and places I've never seen.

I'm dreaming parts of someone else's life.

Describe them.

Well, in my dream

I-I walk into..

...what looks like a military base.

Then I go into a control room filled with equipment.

Suddenly an alarm goes off. I-it gets all panicky.

When I woke up this morning, I wrote, I wrote this down.

Amy, this probably means nothing.

I can't take it anymore.

'I don't know how much longer I can live like this.'

[sobs] What's the use?

I'm sorry, doctor.

Amy, wait.

[phone beeps]

Uh, yes.

Get me Langley, Virginia.

[intense music]

Save us.

Please no more.

(Mrs. Collins) 'Amy, Amy!'

Yes.

'Honey, there's a man downstairs to see you.'

[sighs]

Mmm, good!

[chuckles]

Oh, I'm, I'm Jack Stears.

I work for the Central Intelligence Agency.

- Are you Amy Collins? - Yes.

Well, we have a mutual friend.

'Dr. John Clark.'

'He suggested we have a chat.'

'We'd very much like to talk to you.'

[military band music]

(man on PA system) 'Unit command...silo one.'

[device beeping]

Hey, uh, Frank, this is not the kind of jo

you show up late to.

Hey, uh, you don't look so hot.

You okay?

I'm fine.

Just haven't been sleeping too well lately.

Her name is Amy Collins.

She appears to have viewing capabilities

that extend beyond her own sphere of consciousness

to other people.

Now these episodes only seem to occur

during a sleep like state

and manifests themselves as dreams.

Her experiences would imply

a possible national security breach

and that's why you people are here.

What is your evidence in this, Stears?

Whatever it is, it better be good.

We've come a long way.

A couple of days ago, I got a call

from an old friend mine. Dr. John Clark.

We worked together on a series of parapsychological experiments

a few years ago

and he knows of my continuing interest in these matters.

He made me aware of Amy..

...and this.

What is it?

It's a launch code

for a full-scale ICBM first strike

against the Soviet Union.

And what's it doing here?

Amy wrote this..

...in her notebook.

She claims it's evidence obtained in a dream.

You expect us to believe this?

[chuckles] No, no, sir, I don't.

That's why I've spent the last 48 hours

trying to figure this thing out.

We've investigated every possible link

between the girl and anyone

linked to or working with the military defense

the intelligence communities

or anyone that work at NORAD

and we got squat.

(male #2) 'So?'

So it's our job to test the girl's claim.

Naturally the launch code was changed immediately

when we learned there's a situation.

Let's see if she can tell us the new one.

If she knows ours..

...maybe she knows theirs.

[gun buzzing]

Oh, Billy. Your ride's here.

- Hi, dad. - Hi.

Stick 'em out.

Frank honey, are you alright?

Yeah, I'm just a little wiped out lately, that's all.

Come here.

[sighs]

[dramatic music]

I'm in his house.

(Stears) Amy, I want you to go to the other place.

The military place.

He's not there.

He's at home.

He has a wife..

...and a little boy.

Tell us about him.

He's in a uniform.

His name is Frank.

[music continues]

[gasps]

He's gone.

I can't feel him anymore.

This is just a waste of time, Stears.

Now hold on. Just hold on.

These things don't always happen when you want them to.

Why do I have to do this?

'Cause we need your help to avoid a catastrophe, Amy.

Look.

If you help us..

...maybe we can help you, okay?

- Okay. - 'Good.'

Now...concentrate.

[indistinct chattering on TV]

N..

...U..

...C..

...and the L's there.

E..

(Amy) I'm there..

...in his living room.

Amy..

...concentrate.

- I want you to go to the-- - Wait.

There's something different.

Good.

Tell us all about it.

- Nucu - No, Billy.

That's pronounced nuclear, okay?

Whatever.

[indistinct chattering on TV]

[intense music]

(Billy) 'War!'

'Hey, my teeth.'

Oops.

[music continues]

- What is it? - My hair.

Nuclear war.

We're just chatting around!

This is "Seance 101" stuff.

Look, I've had about enough of you.

Let's pretend to be open-minded.

Let's assume for just one minute

that parapsychology is rea

that she can and has interfaced

her dreams with reality.

And the question is

if she can interface with someone else's dreams

how can we use her?

D-F-N..

...R-T-A..

...T-P-N..

...G-L.

D-F-N?

Another launch code.

Deegan.

Get me NORAD.

That's not a word, dad. You lose.

[gasps]

How could you do this?

How could you let this happen?

Me? What did I do?

Oh, no! Pokey, save me!

We interrupt this program to bring you a special report.

The government has just informed us

that a full-scale nuclear attack..

[static]

Cable's out again.

[explosion]

[all screaming]

[gasps] I didn't mean to do it. I'm sorry!

- 'Did something happen, honey?' - God!

[sighs]

(female #2) 'What'd you say, Frank?'

Uh, nothin'.

I must have dozed off.

Uh, I'll see you tonight, honey.

'Okay, have a good day at work.'

Foxtrot, Lima.

(Stears) 'She's coming out of it.'

(male #2) 'What happened?'

(Amy) Frank's gone to work.

You have to stop him before he dreams again.

Seems she dreamed of Uncle Sam's new preemptive strike code.

Amy, tell me exactly what did you see?

[military band music]

I saw the end of the world.

So do you have money on the game last night?

- What? - The game, man.

- Did you see it? - Oh, uh, game.

No, I must have missed it.

'Oh, you're lucky. I lost a bundle.'

[device beeping]

[intense music]

Right.

We ran through the Pentagon database as well as NORAD.

And what we got out of 26 ICBM sites

in the Continental US with man named Frank

who are married with one son and are on duty as we speak.

Wow, that narrows it down, doesn't it?

Amy, where are you now?

(Amy) 'The military place.'

What are you..

What's he doing now?

Sleeping.

And I'm with him.

What does she mean?

Amy.

Tell me everything..

'...that's happening.'

[military band music]

[device beeping]

- Oh, no! - 'What?'

Listen to me, Stears.

We need to find the exact reference point

that this experience is coming from.

How do you mean?

[chuckles] Is this just a shared nightmare

or is it really happening?

Tell me, Amy.

'Is this in the past or in the future or what?'

It's today.

Now.

Then we've<TO

this silo immediately.

Are you sure we shouldn't jack around some more?

I know.

Tell her to look to the right

of the eight missile enable switches.

There should be a number printed against the wall.

5-8-6-2-2-3.

I'll get back on with NORAD.

She's getting better at this.

[device beeping]

[military band music]

No! Don't!

What's going on?

(Amy) 'He just hit the other man.'

Terrific.

Now he-he's typing something into the computer.

(male #2) 'Typing what?'

I don't know.

(male #3) 'Okay, we got a silo.'

Section 2310, Nebraska.

And wait..

What?

That silo has just gone into complete communications

and intervention shutdown.

Yeah, go on.

Our friend Frank has just changed his missile's target.

To where?

To right where we are standing.

[device beeping]

[gunshot]

[alarm blaring]

[indistinct announcement on PA system]

No, no, no, just-just wait a minute here.

There's really no way that he can launch a missile

especially on a US target, right?

No, he can't do it himself

He and his partner have to turn the key simultaneously.

Instead of that, we just keep

that kind of thing from happening.

The launch silo's designed to be impenetrable.

Well, our boys know how the mechanisms work.

Five minutes and they'll be in.

We'll be in control.

This system works.

Oh, really?

Well, will you explain to me, colonel

how a sleepwalking whacko wound up

with his trigger finger on the big banana?

[alarm blaring]

[keyboard clacking]

Prepare to enable missiles, Neil.

Frank, what's going on? Why are you doing this?

Get ready to turn your keys standby on my mark.

Listen to me.

Come on, Neil. Let's go to standby.

On my mark.

Three, two, one, mark.

[device beeping]

Begin enabling missiles...now.

Frank.

I will blow your brains out, Neil!

What's happening?

He's flipping a row of switches.

Enabling missiles.

It's all over.

[alarm blaring]

[indistinct announcement on PA system]

Prepare to launch.

On my mark, Neil.

No! Please!

Ten, nine..

Frank, Frank, think of the people.

...eight, seven..

We're gonna start a war!

...six, five..

Stop him!

...four..

[alarm blaring]

'...three..'

...two..

Go ahead, Frank!

Go ahead!

[screams]

[gunshots]

[alarm blaring]

(male #3) 'Okay, that's it.'

'We just got an all clear.'

No!

He's dead.

He's dead and it wasn't his fault.

(male #2) 'It wasn't?'

It was the nightmares.

(Stears) 'You've done well.'

Now I want you to just relax and get a good night's sleep.

Then we can start all over again tomorrow.

Again?

Just put it out of your mind for right now.

We've got a couple of other things

we'd like you to look into.

[eerie music]

No!

I'd rather get you little buckaroos one at a time.

Hee-haw!

Hee-haw!

Nuke 'em, cowboy!
