of the kindest souls,

and he has a huge soft spot
for his ex, Maeve.

Maeve's one
of my best friends.

[Jonathan] Over the years,
they've built a blended family
of five kids.

I remarried.

I had two more sons.

Both of them were diagnosed
with autism.

[Danny]
Their two boys are, like,
just like my kids.

Know that we're family.

[Jonathan] And now,
Danny has big plans
for Maeve's garage.

Hey.

I don't need cilantro though.

Two tacos

He's my hero. He really is.

It's just amazing.

You've now been
in film and TV for...

I started in 1985.

What was your very first film?

Well, you know what,

I did a film just
called Runaway Train.

And one of the kids
that I was working with,

I was trying to help him
stay off of drugs.

And, you know,
I was a drug counselor

and I was his counselor.

Guy asked me if I wanted
to be in this movie,
and I said,

all you've gotta do
is get you to act
like a convict.

-I thought it was kinda funny.
-[Drew laughs]

-I'm not sure
if I can play that, uh...
-[Danny laughs]

Well, give it a shot.

[Drew]
I think, from your history,
you were incarcerated.

You, you made some,

some bad moves
when you were younger,

you learned from it.

But you're really
a shining example to people

of how you can learn
from missteps in the past

-and really truly
affect people...
-[Danny] Yeah.

...in a positive way
in the future.

Oh, yeah,
that's changed my life.

But everything good
that has happened to me

has happened
as a direct result

of helping someone else.

[Drew] Tell us about Maeve,

-because you and her dated,
it was in the 90s?
-[Danny] Yeah.

She was, uh, yeah, 21, 22.

Gorgeous, still gorgeous.
Just unbelievably smart.

I also think
it's pretty remarkable,

because I don't think
a lot of people

could maintain
such a strong relationship

with their ex,

and then create a bond
and a friendship that...

-[Danny] Yeah.
-[Jonathan] I, I think
that's actually pretty...

-[Danny] Well, her two boys...
-[Jonathan] ...inspirational.

...I don't wanna say
they consider me their dad,

but their two boys are, like,
just like my kids.

And so, what is it
you think you can do
at Maeve's place?

I would love to turn
that garage

into a, a room
for both of them.

I have to admit.

We have never
surprised anybody

by chain sawing anything
in their backyard before.

-But Danny wanted
to be dramatic.

I heard that chainsaw
and I thought,

"What? In the--"

It's raining. What?

-[Danny laughs]
-Let me just take this
for a second.

-[Danny] Yeah.

I mean, him with the chainsaw,

I know you've always
wanted a spot,

like, especially for Sam,
Theo, and, and you.

That's what we're gonna do.
We're just gonna, like,

a sanctuary in the garage.

-[Maeve] You're kidding me.
-[Danny laughs]

Oh, my God.

[Danny] She's, like,
supporting me all the time.

And the one thing
that's always come first
is our kids.

I had Danny Boy
as a single parent

and kind of just running
around with my kid
all the time...

Met with Maeve,

and she really started
taking care of me.

[Maeve]
I fell in love with Danny Boy.

I started raising him.

He was my whole heart.

I love, I loved him.

[Danny] Then Gilbert came and,
and he had a little brother.

And Gilbert and Danny boy
were inseparable.

And then, uh, Danielle,
and then the same thing.

[Maeve] You know,
we had a great life.

But unfortunately, we,
we did grow apart
in the mid-90s.

He remarried, I remarried.
I had two more sons.

Both of them were ultimately
diagnosed with autism.

[Danny] You know,
it's really hard with Sam
and Theo being autistic.

If you have one
special needs child,

then you no longer work.

That's your job.

The first thing
that a parent has to do

is start to figure out
how the child's gonna access

all of the things
that children need.

And their education comes up,

there was a huge disparity

between what was being offered
and what he needed.

So, I started advocating
for my children.

I started to see that
other parents were having
the same experience.

And that's when Danny really,
really came through.

I told her to go
to law school,

that I'd, I'd pick up the tab.

[Maeve] I needed
to get through law school

because I knew that
in the advocacy of children,

I don't wanna compromise.

She's always been, you know,
like, helping people.

And uh, the way she took care
of Danny Boy,

you know,
her wanting to make
a difference,

it's like you want good,
you do good.

You want good,
you help people.

And good things come to best.

-I have one question
for you, Maeve.
-Yeah.

When you see on the big screen

this tough guy
doing this tough role,

but you know he actually has
a heart of gold

and an incredible smile,

what do you think
when you see that
on the screen?

I think by now, publicly,
people are getting
the hint finally.

My boys and my daughter,
you know,

they're like, oh,
just great kids,

and a lot of that's
'cause of her.

Maeve's one
of my best friends,
you know.

And we have a relationship
that, like, is just like, wow.

Hey, you need me?
Call, I'm there.

[Maeve]
We've always been close.

We have our kids.

We I absolutely know
that we're family.

[Danny] You know what?

Whether they're related to me
or not doesn't matter.

We've always known
that that love is there,
no matter what.

Why don't we tuck inside
where it's not so wet?

[Drew] Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Well, it looks like you

at some point wanted to use
this as an interior space.

Did you originally finish it
with the intention
of using it?

[Maeve] Yeah, it was, um,
actually my office at first.

And then at one point,
it was my daughter's bedroom.

It was always an extension
of the house.

Have you had problems
back here?

'Cause I can see that there's,
it looks like rot on the wall

and you've ripped
the wall open.

Like, right here,
it's really bad.

-[Danny] Yeah.
-[Jonathan] Right there. Yeah.

-So...
-[Danny] All the way through.

-[Maeve] Oh, yeah.
-[Jonathan] Yeah, you can see
roots actually coming in.

-[Danny] Bamboo's really
an intrusive--
-[Jonathan] Yes.

-[Maeve] Yeah.
-[Danny] Yeah, and so,
it just tore up that wall.

[Jonathan]
Bamboo is very invasive.

[Maeve] And the whole bottom
of that wall was just
eaten away.

All of these are things
that can be fixed.

The challenge is
when you have a space
like this,

quite often it will always
feel like a garage.

It doesn't have the comforts
of the inside of the home.

Yeah, tell us a bit more
of what you've been
dreaming about

for 20 years for this space.

An extension, basically,
of the house,

where the boys can get away
and have their own space,

but also we can
all be together.

Theo needs space
from all of us,

'cause he has something
called misophonia.

Just kind of the sound
of people's chewing
or breathing

really gives him anxiety
to his core.

He needs to be able
to be on his own terms.

[Jonathan]
Would it be helpful to do
some kind of sound dampening?

That would be wonderful
for Theo, especially.

[Danny] I see an area
to lift weights.

Sam, he can't go
to a regular gym

because there's too much noise

and there's too many people
passing him

while he's doing something

and people asking him
questions.

Before we talk too much
about what we wanna do,

I feel like maybe
we should let you go

so we can still have
some kind of a surprise
for you.

And, and we'll do some
more research as well

when it comes to designing
for autism.

What can we incorporate
that will make life
more pleasant?

-Okay.
-I won't design, I promise.

Do you trust
Danny's design eye?

We have different tastes.

-That means no.

One thing I am noticing
that it's really dark in here.

So, it would be really nice
to be able to add

some recessed lights,

are not doing it.

The interesting thing too
is the whole--
the yard is that way.

I think, like, like,
some French doors
or something like that,

to where, like,
move that out a little bit.

If we did glass doors here,

- you would get
so much lighting.
-[Danny] Yeah.

But it's also nice
to see the yard.

So, I think we should get rid
of this small shed

that's attached
to the outside wall.

- Right now, you can't really
see out anywhere.

Did you want us to do
anything else outside?

A patio would be cool.

I mean, just like something
to where they can actually
sit out there.

That, to me, is exciting

because there's a lot
we're trying to cram in here.

But those doors alone
will make everything
feel more open,

and it even gives, like,
a fourth space,

that seating area outside.

I mean,
this lady has done a whole lot
for other people.

I just am really glad
that we're doing--

able to do something just,
like, just for her.

If we know how she works out,

we can make sure
that there's equipment
not just for the kids,

-but also for her.

You know,
that's the kind of stuff
that she likes.

so they can access storage

I would say three
or four weeks

would be good for this.

Sometimes you can tell
when somebody doesn't really
build houses,

they, they overbuild
everything.

the plywood goes
all the way up.

There was a gigantic tarantula
living in the walls.

But we're gonna have to
strip all the drywall,
all the plywood.

All these studs
are totally rotten.

The new studs are not treated.

-So, we're gonna have to do
a bunch of reframing...
-[Danny] Yeah.

...just to get it to code.

And then we can build back
and make it better.

This place here
was built to last.

into our first week,

and the rain didn't slow down
our crew,

who started early
to remove the rest of that
useless plywood,

so that we could install
our 10-foot header beam

to support the roof structure
for our chic new French door.

We're also reinforcing
the wall where the bamboo
is coming through

by sistering the studs.

[Drew] With the beam in place,

we're installing
readymade French doors

to keep the weather
out of the interior,

while we're putting
finishing touches
on the design.

[Jonathan] Back inside,
the ceiling is being clad
in plywood

to prepare for the sound
dampening panels

that will really help
Theo's misophonia.

And while all that's going on,

I'm in a meeting with Danny
at his taco shop.

to work through
the final design plans

and maybe get
a little something to eat.

Tacos, tacos, tacos!

So, what we need
to figure out is

I kinda laid out a little bit
of what we're doing.

So, we added the doors

-leading into
the courtyard area.
-Yeah.

[Jonathan] We're gonna
expand the patio.

I guess the first decision
we should make is,

what do you wanna do
for the patio?

'Cause I could redo it
into terracotta,

I can do it in these
nice brick pavers,

make it a little more modern.

The one thing I notice
is there's the existing
flagstone border

-that goes all the way around.
-[Danny] Yeah.

[Jonathan] We could match it
up to that

-like it is here.
-Mmm-hmm?

Or cut out
just the area outside here
and do it in something else.

Yeah. What, what do you think?

What do you think
would look best?

If I can find flagstones
to match the color palette,

I feel like
keeping that continuity
would be probably the best,

and it'll look like
it was always that way.

Sounds great.

Amazing. So then,
that takes care of this.

On the inside,

-we have a chance to do
something pretty special.
-Right.

Here's the exciting idea.

On the ceiling,

instead of it
just being painted white,
plain, regular,

what if we do
some kind of veneer?

So, we can do,
like, a cladding.

It can be in a narrow board
like this.

-Mmm-hmm?
-It can be
in thicker boards like this.

You had mentioned one
of the things that's helpful

is having some kind
of sound dampening.

Part of that
can be accomplished

by changing up
the roof material

-to something with wood slats.
-[Danny] Yeah.

-And it also
looks really nice. Yeah.
-Awesome. Yeah.

I think whiter.

And Theo,
he not like unfinished wood.

He loves wood that's all done.

-This, I like.
-Yeah.

And I would love to see this
going across the ceiling.

[Jonathan]
Well, the nice thing too,

when you see it installed
in long runs,

it looks gorgeous.

One idea that I did have
is possibly doing a wall
of curtains across here,

could even do it over here
part way.

I would do something unlined,

-so that the light still
comes through the windows.
-Yeah.

[Jonathan] Having fabric
on that surface

-will just break up the sound
a little bit more.
-Yeah. Yeah.

With the wood cladding
and this together,

-do you have a preference?
-Yeah.

-Would you wanna introduce...
-Light-- I just,
I like the light colors.

-I just think they stick out.
-Yeah.

-[Danny] I don't know...
-[Jonathan] This would
probably be my choice.

And it really
is gonna make for us,

-just a calm, inviting space.

The rest of the space,

we should talk
about spatial planning.

Okay, so, I would say,

when we're looking at how
we wanna break this down,
we need four zones.

What are the areas
you wanna see?

I know both the boys

-will start lifting weights,
you know?
-Yeah.

So, let me put this down.
So, we need weights.

[Danny] Barre and a mirror.

[Jonathan] Ballet barre
for Maeve to practice dance.

Sam loves to walk.

-You know that.
He loves a ...
-[Jonathan] Right.

-Just a Sam space.

-[Jonathan] Uh...
-[Danny] Theo's lounging area.

'Cause Theo always has
a couple of friends
from college over, you know?

They, uh, they'll do,
uh, board games,

-uh, they like to eat.
-Oh, they like to--

So, you wanna have,
like, a board game table?

-Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
That'd be great. Yeah.
-If they're eating too, so...

And that's for eating
and games.

Well, this is gonna be
pretty incredible.

Maeve's garage
will be transformed

into an inclusive,
light filled flex space
for the family.

A calming Earth tone
color palette

starts with the durable luxury
vinyl floor,

while up top will wow
with an architectural
wood slab ceiling,

that not only dampens sound,

it defines
four distinct activity zones

to comfort Sam and Theo
the minute they walk in.

Zone one will be
a fully equipped gym

that boasts
a custom workout wall

with a ballet barre for Maeve

and a heavy weight bag
for Sam to practice
his kickboxing.

Zone two, a plush,
neutral toned sectional

will anchor this cozy nook

and will be the perfect spot
for video games
or family movies,

while a dark concrete table
in zone three

is perfect for Theo
to do homework
or play board games.

Zone four will offer
a peaceful place for Sam
to unwind.

And finally,
we'll extend the indoors out

with a serene flagstone patio,

complete with sleek furniture
and a fire table,

the ideal sanctuary for Maeve

to work or entertain friends
day or night.

Well, you know what, yeah.

Maeve is kind of, uh,
afraid of anything I decide.

[both laugh]

But I think that
we're on the same page.

It's, like, lighter,
I think she will like it too.

You know what we do?

-We wait until
she says she loves it...
-Right?

...and then we give you
all the credit.

Mmm-hmm.

Oh. Perfect. All right.

[Jonathan] It's week two
and we're pushing hard

to get the interior
of this new family flex space

ready for some
incredible finishes.

The carriage doors
needed some love.

They weren't
exactly weather tight,

so we fixed up the trim
and we sanded them down

to prepare them for paint.

[Drew] Now, while outside,

the stucco exterior
around the new French doors
is getting patched up.

So, it'll look like
these doors have always been
a part of the garage.

[Jonathan] Because we agreed
to turn this around
in less than a month,

we have to install
the ceiling now

while work continues
around it.

It might seem a bit dark,
but that's gonna change

once these gorgeous
natural wood slats,

that Danny picked out,
go over top.

Keep it flat.

There ya go.

[Drew] This is actually
definitely the way to do it.

-We have
a little assembly line going.

I think the cladding

if it just has
that rich natural tone to it.

she really likes

a natural earth tones
kind of stuff.

And, uh, I like the pattern
on the ceiling

instead of just, you know,
paint or just wood.

It's like... It's gorgeous.

When you're going on install,
nothing ever lines up
exactly the way you planned.

-[Danny] Well...
-But this
is pretty darn close.

-There are
a couple of things...

we'll have to replace.

'Cause I didn't realize
that once we pull
the door down...

-it hit on here.
-Yes.

So we've now beveled the edge,

and we'll replace that board
so that it doesn't
catch any more.

But isn't that amazing,
though, like...
to hide that away

as additional storage
and access up there?

-It's pretty great.
-That's awesome.

I love the ceiling
because 9 times out of 10,
ceiling means [whistles] flat.

It's more
than just the ceiling,
it's almost like art.

You know, one of the things
Theo does not like
unfinished wood,

but I love the way
this has a natural look,
that's what's awesome.

[Jonathan] I think
the most important thing is,

as kids get older,
and these are very grown
kids now, [chuckles]

they want more and more
space of their own.

-They love Mom, but they want
to have their own space.
-[Danny] Oh, yeah.

And besides that, it's like,
you know, who hasn't heard,

"Mom?"
"Hey! Turn the TV down!"

-You know? [laughing]
-[Jonathan] Yeah, yeah.

Now we've... I've said that.

And now that I'm,
I'm the the parent,
I'm starting to hear that.

-[Danny laughing]
-Yeah. Yeah, yeah,
I know what it's like.

[upbeat music playing]

We've reached the end
of week two.

And while some
of the early weather issues
put us a day behind,

we brought in the skim team
at the crack of dawn

to level the garage floor
so that we could have it dry

before the afternoon
flooring install.

[Drew] These luxury
vinyl planks
check all the boxes.

They're elegant
and light toned for when Maeve
wants to entertain friends,

and durable for when the boys
want to use it as a gym.

[Jonathan] And on the outside,

we're making sure that bamboo
never comes through
the wall again,

so we're pouring
a concrete barrier,

it's about 2-feet high
and 6-inches thick.

And on the other side,
we had to remove
the French doors

to paint them
a high contrast charcoal.

And now that they're dry,
we're re-hanging them.

[Danny] Let's do it, dude.

[Jonathan]
Come back a little bit.

-Pull it in.
-[Drew] Yeah.

Nice.

It takes two of us
to do what you're doing
on your own.

and the last few days
have seen torrential
rain return,

been able to start the work
on Maeve's new patio.

But with a break
in the weather today,

we are looking to make up
for some lost time.

[Drew] So, we brought in
a second crew

and some heavy equipment
so we can finally

start lifting
the old flagstone and sod.

[Jonathan] We're now looking
at three and a half weeks
instead of three weeks.

But to be honest,
the rain was kind of
a blessing in disguise.

Okay, so it was actually
a good thing that was raining
so hard

because we saw where the water
is pooling and gathering.

-And it is all right here.
-Yeah.

Because this whole lot
runs this way,
slopes towards the garage.

-Right. Towards the garage.
-We wouldn't want
that water going in.

So we're building
a French drain to move it
away from the structure.

-And I am ready.

While you guys
are digging the big hole,

I'll plan out
for the small hole
to trench the propane.

So, essentially,
we're gonna put this
all the way across.

-[Danny] Yeah.
-So any water that
gets over here, we'll have...

We'll have a couple of drains
that will go down,

this has like a sock over it,

and then all of that
will run into the gravel pit

we're gonna put underground.

The French drain,
I think this is
a brilliant idea.

There's no way that we want
anything to, like, go wrong
and ruin that floor.

trench in place,

the French drain
and propane line

that will fuel
the outdoor fire pit
were both installed.

[Jonathan] And right on time
because the flagstones

have arrived
and they are massive.

I wanted a flagstone aesthetic

just because Maeve loves
natural materials and tones,

and the large the profile
of these slabs

just adds more sophistication
to the outdoor space

so Maeve can meet work clients
or wow her friends
on the weekend.

-[Danny grunting]
-[Jonathan] It is a beast!

skip rope, stuff like that.

maybe we mount
the ballet barre across here.

and the privacy
for when they need it.

So you have a trapdoor here
that is the attic space.

So there's still storage
up in the attic space,
so it's hidden away.

about the attic.

You'll even notice
something like the beautiful
slat feature on the ceiling,

it actually also works
to reduce noise.

Same with the curtains,
having a wall of curtains

so you're not looking
at the carriage doors,

but it also helps provide
a little bit of that
sound dampening.

So the space in here
does feel really calm.

-It really does.
-[Danny] Yeah.

[Maeve] I cannot hear
a single thing outside,
which is surprising.

It's the way
they've set it up.

You know, your voice
only travels this far.

for somebody

sensory issues.

and they custom-made

for the first time in history,
a man listened.

It's a huge change because
when Theo has friends over
Sam won't be excluded.

- He can be comfortable
with whatever is going on.

Theo is going to be
beside himself
to have this place.

[Danny] A spare room
now, you know.

I predict that Sam is gonna
walk in and throw himself
right on that couch first.

I could easily see Theo
on the couch
playing video games.

I could see Sam
ride the exercise bike
without bothering Theo at all.

even read a book in there

while somebody else
is working out.
