it to a UFO

and these lights were
in the west of town.

And when I heard that,
I thought, "Oh my goodness,

I'm scheduled for duty
at November Five,
west of Minot."

Captain Schindele arrives
at the control facility,

news about the UFO
was quickly making the rounds.

what happened overnight?"

Within minutes,

Mantell and his wingmen
close in on
the mysterious object.

He reported that it was shiny,

metallic, tremendous in size,

reported seeing observation
windows.

Mantell gives
an astonishing order

to one of the pilots
in his formation,

"return to base
and arm your plane
with hot guns."

The military term, which means

prepare to fire.

So, it's what I always thought
was really interesting because

for me, it's almost like the
smoking gun of the whole case.

They knew what was going on.

it's a serious matter

and they just
wouldn't do hot guns,

for no reason.

The reasons he's requesting

feels threatened,

and he's a seasoned guy.

He's not gonna ask for that
unless he needs it.

plane prepares for
intergalactic battle,

Mantell climbs higher
and higher
in pursuit of the UFO.

So, he chased this thing
and at around 20,000 feet,

they lost contact,
that's where the mystery
kinda starts.

what caused Captain Mantell's
plane to crash.

No official reports

a well decorated officer.

And, he also worked for NASA

enemy invasions were mounting.

May 20, 1957,

American fighter pilot
Major Milton Torres Jr.

is stationed at
a US military base in England,

when suddenly,
he's given the order
to scramble,

when suddenly,

after a mysterious
object is detected
on ground radar.

across the sky
at nearly 700 miles per hour,

Torres fearlessly pursues
the unidentified enemy.

He said
the radar signature was

as big as
an aircraft carrier at sea.

on Torres's radar screen

is unlike anything
he's ever seen.

that would defy physics.

But, he's thinking,

this is the beginning of...

and prepares to fire.

Once you lock on and you fire,

the computer takes over.

And as computer's
taking over this thing

on the radar was gone.

He said, "what
the hell was that?"

And you know,
he was totally spooked.

And he calls ground radar.

"I don't know what happened.

But, this thing just

disappeared off my scope."

an alien craft.

it couldn't have been

the incident,

Torres heads back to base,

where he's immediately
intercepted
by a superior officer.

One of the enlisted men
brought an NSA guy

with a IBM salesman,

you know, black suit and tie.

that we all hear about.

came in,

and he basically said,
"do you like flying,

Lieutenant Torres?"
My dad said, "I love flying."

He said, well, listen, he says

"If you ever reveal
what has happened,
you'll never fly again.

"We'll pull your rank,

"we'll pull
your pilot's license
and you'll be dog [bleep]

And my dad said, "Yes, sir."

He says, "You will not talk
about this ever again.

"This didn't happen.

"Don't tell your wife,

How did he hold it together
all of this time

without just

-breaking?
-It ate him up.

He locked it in his head.
He just had a lockbox there.

And you couldn't get it
out of him.

And, how was life after that
for your father?

I think the most profound
thing was,
not to tell his father.

You know, because my dad
was close with my grandfather,

you know, they were close.

And, for him to not even
tell his father

just

bewilders the mind.

And, you know,

I think, he took that
to his grave

that he never was
able to tell his dad.

I think he really took that
to his grave.

[narrator] Although Torres
is prohibited from speaking
about his UFO encounter,

it doesn't stop him
from secretly
writing about it.

He knew from day one,
it's a cover up.

And, he knew possibly that
this could die with him.

He had the foresight to say,
you know what,

we're gonna get
an affidavit in place

so, it doesn't disappear.

[narrator] In 2003,

work with him.

to speak at a UFO conference,
in Gaithersburg, Maryland,

where he was finally able
to share his story
with the world.

an observation
over Oakland, California,

in January of 1999.

We were southbound on 880.

and about a mile away
this thing stopped

And at that point, it jumped,

it moved faster
than I could blink.

What I saw was a cylinder

about 45 feet long.

I'm guessing it had two big
white lights underneath it.

As we moved along this way,
eventually it turned
and paralleled the car.

And then, for some reason,
it got very dark, really fast.

And we gained about three
hours in time.

We drove for maybe a minute
and 15 seconds

linear time and three hours
in some past.

Wow! That's amazing.

Absolutely.

I felt very unwell.

I have over 100 years of pilot
reports of unidentified
aerial phenomena.

And what are some of the
patterns that you've noticed

in some of your research
specifically?

Pilots commonly report

four basic varieties of UAPs.

They report balls of light,
they report spheres,

cylinders and disks,

common geometric forms.

There are others, but those
are the primary ones
that we see on the data.

Balls of light made up nearly
50% of the cases that we

are aware of at this point.

And, what are the interactions
with the pilots
and the balls of light?

We've had accounts
of them coming

and barrel rolling
around aircraft.

Other types of observations
include

just having them come at you
from a distance and pass you.

But, there seems
to be a personal

aspect to the pacing
of the aircraft.

an interactive quality between
an aircraft versus

something that's just going by
and you saw it.

Why are they pacing
these aircraft?

Why are they trying
to interact with them?

My guess is that they are
information gathering.

of traffic

around or near our aircraft
was not going off

either orally and was not
depicting anything,
ah, visually.

That is a unidentified
flying object bro.

then I realized,

oh my God, this is
an unidentified flying object.

And I'm like, I've been flying
for nearly 30 years of my life

and I've never
seen anything like this.

it's weather

about 40 miles off
our left wingtip.

It was out of this world.

There's no way we can compete
with that type of speed
and maneuverability.

it was very well-defined.

So, it indicates it's very
close to the ground.
