[Jim] Well, we were the two
tallest guys in the school.

We also grew up together
playing hoops

in his backyard,

so we knew each other's moves.

think about turning pro?

for a couple of white guys.

No, I had to keep my grades up.

I had to study if I was going
to get into a good law school.

So, Jim, I know you told
the uniforms when they arrived
at your house what happened,

but sometimes,
so close to the actual event,

people get caught up,
you know,

and they leave out things.

a chance to relax,

step by step, what transpired.

I was in the den.

I was playing with my kids.

And then we go down.

- The doorbell rang.
- [doorbell chimes]

Shannon called out
from the living room,

said she'd get it.

[Jim] I've been working
a lot lately, so, uh,

it was the first chance I'd had
in a while to play with my kids.

- [singing]
- [shrill scream]

[Jim] All of the sudden,
Shannon screamed,

so I went running.

Somebody tried to get in
the house! There's something--

[Jim] Shannon is yelling about
this weirdo at the front door.

He's pounding on the door.

- Just stay there.
- [loud knocking]

He's acting crazy,

talking gibberish.

He could have been on drugs,

the way he was behaving.

Rock and roll!
[indistinct] Aaaaah!

[Jim] So I told him,
"Get away from here."

But he kept making these, uh,
jerky movements,

and babbling, and laughing
this high-pitched laugh.

And then he tries to move
past me into the house.

[speaking another language]

[Jim] So, I gave him a shove,
nothing big,

and I told him again,
"Get away from my house."

And I shut the door.

He kept at it,
slamming, pounding.

So, I, uh...

So I got the gun.

Now, I'm going by pure gut,

you know, what with the
burglaries in the neighborhood.

You know, I don't know if
the guy's gonna rob the house,

or he's gonna hurt my wife,

or he's gonna hurt my kids
or what,

so I told him, "Get away!"

He leans into me.
I raise the gun.

He leans in closer.
I put the gun to his chest.

He made a grab for it.

The bastard grabbed for the gun.

- [grunting]
- [gunshot booms]

I didn't know until that moment

if I could actually pull
the trigger.

[grunts softly]

Sweet Lord.

[sighs]

I killed a man.

[melancholy music plays]

[Pembleton sighs]

Shannon, we need for you
to tell us

exactly what you remember
about what's happened.

[Shannon] Um, I heard the bell
ring a couple times.

[doorbell ringing]

I figured Jim wasn't
gonna get it, so I went.

And at first,
I was a little startled.

[maniacal laughter]

[Shannon] So I let out
a kinda yelp,

and this young man
was standing there.

He was um, dancing and laughing.

And singing some song,
but in a foreign language.

And so I said, "Wait a moment.
I'll get my husband."

And I-- I shut the door.

Nah, nah, nah!

But he kept knocking,
and yelling, and singing.

[Pembleton] Did he seem
to be on drugs?

[Shannon] Yes. Yes.

- Maybe? Um...
- This guy...

I told Jim what was going on,

- and we went back
to the living room.
- Just-- I'll take care of it.

[Pembleton] Oh, you went back
to the door with your husband?

[Shannon] Yes. He went
to the front door,

and I stayed, um, back a ways.

[singing]

[Shannon] Jim tried to figure
out what the young man wanted,

but he was being so silly,
and-- and loud,

and-- and aggressive,

- that Jim... finally
lost his patience.
- Get outta here!

[Shannon] But the young man
kept yelling and knocking,

- and knocking, and yelling,
and singing.
- [laughing]

[Shannon] And that's when
I thought I'd better go
check on the kids.

I suddenly got very worried
about them,

because, um, we've been having
some problems in our area.

And I was walking down the hall,

and this is-- this is inane,

but... I remember
the floorboards squeaked.

I-- I remember thinking about
the floor squeaking,

when all of the sudden,
I heard--

[gunshot booms]

I'll never forget that sound.

It echoed through our house.

It shook the house
like an earthquake.

Shannon...

from what you're telling me,

the situation on the porch
was tense,

but not explosive.

What happened?

How did things escalate
so far, so fast?

Jim can get very
frustrated by people

who don't speak
English very well.

He always says the only--

the taxicab drivers in Baltimore

[laughing nervously]

[laughter turns to sobs

when I saw Hikmet standing

at the front door of the house,

and the guy in the doorway
was holding a gun.

And they both were yelling loud.

The guy aimed the gun
at Hikmet's chest.

[Hikmet screaming]

his hands up--

Hikmet had his hands raised?

[Bolander sighs]

He had his hands up.

She would not comment
as to whether she intends,

regardless of the grand jury's
decision,

to sue Bayliss
in a civil court.

No one should be forced
to flee from their home.

It is our ultimate sanctuary.

Do I feel good about what I did?

No.

No, I'll have to live with
the horror of that split second

for the rest of my life.

Do I believe
I did the right thing?

Yes.

And I know that you know,

given the same circumstances,

you would behave
exactly as I did.

I can't understand why
it's taking them so long
to decide.
