those pipelines

and go into those careers

and you wanna have something
that you run yourself,

like you can do it
and it's possible.

The first thing you
have to realize

is nothing sells itself, okay?

Guys, you have to communicate,
you have to persuade.

You have a very limited time
to grab somebody's attention.

The goal of any pitch
is to have that person

ideally walk away
understanding your vision

so that they can tell
other people about it.

So we're gonna work on how
do I get their attention?

We're gonna work on giving
them a clear explanation

of the problem that we solve

or the outcome we help
people achieve.

And then we're gonna give
them evidence of why,

man, that person is the
person I want to get behind.

- He's intense, he's
high energy.

I think he's got really
good information.

- We wanna pull them
into your story.

So instead of them like
watching you present,

feel invigorated, right?

Not have FOMO from your trip.

Get access to a sport.

Feel great about what's
on your feet,

finally feel good
about your hair,

because if you look
good you feel good.

If you feel good-

You don't see a lot of
Black-owned businesses

in golf in general.

And we needed a better
apparel approach

to being able to get
people out on the course,

looking and feeling like they

feel good about themselves
business.

to try different things.

And she in invested her income
tax check into my business.

She was a single parent,
she was working corporate,

of Chicago, born and raised.

And so the issue is

this is the view from the

I grew up as a baseball player.

My entire family was there,
all Black little league.

My father was my commissioner,
my mom was a hotdog lady.

My grandmother kept score.

It's gonna relate and
talk to more people

that understand that
came from the bottom

and they're going to the top.

I was born with liver disease

and as part of being
born with liver disease,

nonprofit organization

out of our dining room
when I was five years old.

That set me on a trajectory

to want to help people
throughout my lifetime.

I've almost died three times.

I'm very blessed that the
good Lord has kept me here.

And as part of doing that,
I'm trying to commit my life

to giving back to others
that don't have the resources

and access to things
like I had growing up.

And now I'm moving
into golf apparel

because I realize that
there aren't a lot of people

that look like me that
have been on golf courses

traditionally that have access

to the most strategic
networking game on the planet.

That to me is one of my
least favorite pitches.

What do you guys think
about Joshua Butler?

- This talks to the existing
audience already in golf.

- Yes. Yes
- It does.

You're absolutely right.

- Being in the throes
with people that are going

through the same things
that you're dealing with

so that they can understand

why J. Butler Golf
needs to exist.

- Yeah, so Saturday

his pitch didn't really
do it for me.

- Crazy how many people
think that

they can just start a business

and have no understanding or
no marketing plan whatsoever.

- Yeah.

- Believability,
reliability, relatability.

- If you don't have
those abilities,

we don't believe you.

- I just would be so embarrassed

if I got sent home after
the first day.

most people don't know about it.

That's very tough to crack
in an industry.

I'm looking for someone

that has that entrepreneurial
traits,

but also a product, a product
that I believe can sell.

- The biggest thing I'm
feeling right now

is that I let myself down.

Um

I am and always have
been extremely confident

about myself and my offer.

But it's tough when

when I can't communicate
that to other people,

and when maybe they
don't see the value

in not just the business,
but in me too

because everything I do
is an extension of myself.

So getting eliminated
for the business,

it's like I'm getting eliminated

because I'm not good enough

and I think that's what
hurts the most right now.

- Zero to one is the hardest.

- The entrepreneurial
journey is not an easy one,

but you fail, you fail,
you fail, you fail,

and you get back up.

- I learned so much from
the pitch challenge.

should have that.

Because you could be
meeting an investor

like in the elevator
at the restaurant

and it shouldn't be taking
you a minute,

two minutes to explain
your business.

We tend to wanna embellish
and talk about everything.

Sometimes we just need to
go straight to the point,

you know, like be a
straight shooter.

cool to see like

what other areas we'll
like improve on.

- I never had a mentor

and being able to work
with young entrepreneurs

and giving them the wherewithal

to be the best version of
themselves that they can be

is something I absolutely
cherish and love doing.

- [Joshua] I'm curious, I
have a question for you.

- Yeah.

- How did you get into
the lane of things

that you felt you did best?

- Gosh, that's such
a great question.

You know, I went to
dental school.

Do you know how much business

they teach you in dental school?

- Zero.
- Yeah. Zero.

And I knew I needed
to learn more.

I think one of the
greatest pieces of advice

I can give a young
entrepreneur: copy genius.

I found the five most successful
cosmetic dentists in LA

and I looked at all
the things they did

that made their practice
so successful.

Within one year my
practice was twice

as successful of all of theirs.

When ABC put me on "Extreme
Makeover",

we got millions and
millions of dollars

of free advertising on TV,
and our company exploded.

And then in 2010, we
sold it to Phillips.

As a dentist, I knew
I'd have a good living,

[soft music]

but selling my company
was next level.

It gave me the ability
to raise my kids,

support my parents, and
do a lot of good

for a lot of people that
I could have never done.

I'm telling you, I
came from nothing.

And for anybody who tells
you money doesn't matter,

it gives you the ability
to do things

you could never have
done before.

- Meeting these people
who are firsthand

transferring their knowledge,
boosting us with the energy

that feels like it
is so possible.
