Eight blows in the back of

the head.

And one in the front,
which fractured the skull.

What kind of person does that?

It's a bit thinner than a scaffold bar,

about two foot long.

He's obviously coming here, come by there.

I was kneeling down, tuning a TV in.

He started hitting me across the head for no

reason at all.

And I was just blacking out.

And when I managed to turn around,

I remember it in the front,

I remember blood running down my face.

I've jumped out the window
onto the bottom lawn,

and, obviously, made me escape

through the gate and down the road.

If I would've stayed in that flat,

I would be a dead man.

He was intending to kill me.

100%.

Why was he trying to kill you?

-That's exactly what David Morris does.

He picks up tools and hits people with them.

That's why that family tragically lost

their lives.

This was, and still is,

the biggest murder inquiry ever seen in

South Wales.

After months of awful frustrating work,

police have now arrested the 38 year old man

on suspicion of murder.

For four days and they released

the bastard.

You fucking bastard!

Police have already searched

woodland near the village of Craig Cefn Parc

in the flat where David Morris was

arrested on Tuesday.

Today, a second house in Swansea was also

targeted and a number of items

removed from inside.

Swansea magistrates also granted detectives

a 28 hour extension to continue questioning

David Morris.

The latest deadline runs out in

4 and a half hours.

This interview is being

tape recorded and video recorded.

And the light is illuminated.

And the room is being monitored.

I am Detective Sergeant 430, Phil Reese.

Also present is.

Uh David Hutchison,

Solicitor.

I'll just say to you again.

And David, you don't have to say anything,

but it may harm your defense if

you do not mention.

-Mr.
-David Hutchison was

the defense lawyer.

Do you understand that?

Yes.

He was the senior solicitor,

my boss.

I was a trainee solicitor.

And it was the first thing that

I was involved in.

So it was massive,
particularly for a trainee.

-Mr.
-Hutchison is here to

represent you,

you're entitled to free
and independent legal.

The one question that people

have always asked me is,

"Who do you think did it?"

And what do you say?

-I tell them who I think did it.

I spent every working day with him.

I never once thought that this guy

was lying to me,

or was capable of those murders.

But David Morris was not liked by

South Wales Police.

There had been a previous case involving

a Mr. Wassell.

He was actually found "not guilty" by a jury.

And the police felt that David Morris had

got away with it.

David Morris had

18 months to prepare for this interview.

And as the evidence came forward,

he lied, and lied, and lied again.

I think I'll move on to

Saturday, the 26th of June.

Okay?

On the camera now, what would you say were

your movements that day?

Talk me through it again.

What did you do through the day

and through the evening?

Uh.

He said that

he'd been out that afternoon,

having some drinks, watching the rugby.

And during the course of that afternoon,

he had a round with his
partner, Mandy Jewell.

When she went home with her daughter,

he remained in the pub drinking.

Round about half past 11,

Morris then leaves the pub.

And he decided to walk to his parents' house,

some five miles away.

But he decided halfway through the walk,

"I'm not gonna go to my parents' house."

"I'm now gonna return home."

And he said he got home
about half past four in

the morning.

Now, Mandy Jewell,

she said, she's woken up by the door opening

and the dogs didn't bark.

So she assumed it was David Morris coming in,

but there's just no time he came home.

So in the end he had no alibi.

-No.

The following morning after the murders,

Janice Williams, who used to live next door

to Morris, came to the police station.

And she said that after Mandy Jewell left

the pub,

she remained in the pub drinking with Morris.

And that he'd been taken amphetamine.

You could tell by

his eyes,

if he's been taking anything.

You can tell straight away.

And what did the look in

his eyes tell you?

-His eyes were wild.

And during

the course of the conversation,

Mandy Power's name came up.

He Said, "She's an evil cow."

"She's horrible."

"She's not capable of
looking after her children

or her mother."

And you know, he was
slacking her off big time.

And he left.

No, Janice Williams

didn't like David Morris.

And she always had a suspicions that

he was responsible.

But this one thing about having suspicions,

what you need is evidence.

And what we needed was
the link from the scene to

David Morris.

I was the first

forensic scientist at Kelvin Road.

It was a very chaotic crime scene.

There was a lot of smoke damage,

heat damage.

There was soot over everything, water damage.

There were occasions where we'd hoped

to get results, which we didn't get results.

The most significant
finding was the gold chain.

It was lying in a pool of Mandy's blood

at the foot of Doris' bed,

where she'd been beaten to death.

This is

a photograph taken by
a scenes of crime officer

by Doris Dawson's bed on the floor.

If you look at that photograph,

you'll see a gold chain on the floor,

have a look on that.

They had this chain in

the middle of a murder scene.

The police were intent then on proving that

the chain was David Morris's.

It seems to me

that chain, in fact, had been pulled off

and put up.

What sort of struggle was going on?

We were quite keen to see if

we could find any DNA that was from

the original owner of the chain.

But because it was so
heavily contaminated with

Mandy's blood, we weren't able to get any

stranger profile from it.

But the fact that the clasp was missing was

very significant.

Also, I'm gonna show you

a photograph of you.

Just to prove identity, I'm showing that

photograph now.

Yeah.

Okay.

On that photograph, you can clearly see

you wearing that chain.

We've got a photograph recovered in

Morris' home of him with Mandy Jewell,

wearing a chain.

And you can see in the photograph,

the chain has been broken.

At some stage, a very cheap repair has been

put on it.

-The chain that we've recovered from

9 Kelvin road, David, is that chain yours?

-No, it's not my chain.

No, I swear to God,

it's not my chain.

On my children's lives,
that's not my chain, no.

No.

Your chain,

was it ever left at

Mandy Power's house?

-Never, never left at Mandy Power's.

No.

You sure about that?

-I am positive.

My chain's never been left at Mandy Power's.

Over three days of

interview, he was asked repeatedly about

this chain.

He said that chain is not,

you shown him the chain,
"That's not my chain."

"I had my chain on that night."

"I was wearing it that night."

And in fact, "I lost it two weeks later on

a building site."

I was carrying breeze blocks

and slabs.

When the weight went on it and it just

snapped it.

It snapped the back of the link.

Carried it in my pocket,

I don't think it was about

two days before I realized

it was missing.

We went back to

that building site and we lifted the patio,

but there was no chain there.

But David Marsh used to work for a guy called

Eric Williams.

Now Eric Williams was a very interesting

individual.

He was Morris' cousin.

And a statement was taken from him.

One of the first things that Eric tells us

that you said to him, okay?

You asked him, "Can I borrow some money?"

"Please, Sir, don't go
ask me where my chain is."

"I need to get a new one."

What could you tell me about that then?

-Umm.

Detectives hunting

the Clydach murderer have revealed

a gold chain found at the murder scene

that was probably torn
from the killer's neck in

a violent struggle.

Here's our chief reporter, Penny Roberts.

Eric took me to sell them

this car to go down and get a chain.

Why?

Because I didn't wanna

be seen without my chain.

Because it, frankly,

I haven't got the best reputation.

Let me clarify.

When I lost me chain, I panicked.

So Eric offered to get me chain.

And I said that that was the same chain as

the original one.

When the chain became

an issue then,

why didn't you come and tell us then?

-Um, well, to be honest,

the South Wales Police haven't got

the best record for catching the right people

with it.

As far as I'm concerned,

I haven't done nothing wrong.

So it's like.

We weren't telling lies that were covering up

for murder.

Do you know?

We were telling lies that was

giving us peace of mind.

Is there anything that

you need to say that
you omitted to say so far?

No, that's the last of it.

Alright, going with

Eric says, that weeks after

this first disclosure to him, by you,

regarding mention of the chain,

you said to him, "I knew
that made a good Mandy."

"In fact, I was screwing her Friday."

-Friday?

I didn't say Friday.

What sort of

conversation did you have then?

-I told Eric that I had sex with Mandy.

Yeah.

-Um.

You've just disclosed

to me, something totally new.

This, David, is a very important issue.

Eric's added that you said,

"My chain is still with Mandy."

I didn't say that at all.

What I said to Eric is exactly,

it looks exactly the same as my chain.

And I didn't say it was my chain at all.

You've got that totally bloody wrong.

Totally wrong.

That's the God's honest truth,

I didn't say nothing to him.

The fact that you were

digging holes there for yourself is

the fact that the chain in this photograph

is your chain.

That's why you've dug yourself a hole.

It's not my chain.

Why is Eric Williams

providing us a statement that David Morris

told me two days after the murders,

that he had sex with Mandy Power on Friday.

And the fact that he's left his chain

at that scene.

What have you gotta say about that, David?

-No, totally wrong.

No, he's wrong.

He's totally wrong.

That's why you didn't

come in til four o'clock that night.

'Cause you were at Mandy Power's house,

9 Kelvin Road, Saturday night.

That is the truth, David.

-No, it's not.

And the lies

and deceit that you've made over

this last year or so is because

that chain of yours was left at Mandy's house

that night and you didn't realize.

-No.

Definitely not.

No.

But that concludes

this interview, Dave.

We were just stupid.

That's all we were, we were stupid.

We were scared and we were stupid.

Okay.

The time is now 9:38:7.

And I'm stopping the recording.

South Wales police,

have tonight, charged a 38 year old man

with the Clydach murders.

David Morris, a scrap
metal dealer from Swansea

is accused of murdering Mandy Power.

When he was charged with

the homicides, he was allowed one phone call.

And he rang Eric Williams.

And he said,

in front of everybody in the custody suite,

"Eric, I'll never forgive you for what

you've just done."

And put the phone down.

A patrol car led the convoy

that brought David Morris to the court from

Morriston Police Station where he'd been held

overnight since the
decision to charge him with

four counts of murder yesterday afternoon.

Shortly afterwards,
members of his family arrive

for the hearing.

-I remember seeing him,

he hadn't slept for a week.

He just kept saying, it'd be all right.

It'd be okay.

It'd be okay.

It'd be okay.

And we were all thinking
it's not gonna be okay.

And my heart just broke.

Just seeing him, my heart just broke.

We just all cried.

We just cried.

During the three hour long

hearing,

a crowd had gathered behind the barriers

to watch him being driven
away to Swansea prison,

where he'll be held until his next

court appearance.

We still couldn't believe

there was gonna be an actual trial.

Because they never had any evidence

to place my brother at the scene.

Nothing made sense.

Those first three investigations

into the chain came back negative.

They could not link that
chain to David Morris

and David always denied
that it was his chain.

They sent it away another time.

We send the chain to

a metal expert to try and prove

it's been stretched or not.

So the metal guy said, "I cannot tell you if

it's been stretched or not,

but are you aware that
in the links of this chain

is brick dust?"

And also he said, "On the chain is some

green paint."

So armed with this information

we went back to Morris' house.

And in the kitchen,
under three layers of paint,

was the same green paint.

So then, before the trial was due to start,

David Morris admitted it was

his chain found at the murder scene.

He then said that, "I
saw Mandy on the Friday",

the day before the murders,

and we had sex in her house and my chain

must have dropped out
of my pocket and stayed at

the scene.

Why did Dai lie about

the gold chain being his to the police?

-What can I say?

He was scared.

And I can understand him being scared.

If Mandy Jewell had found out about

the relationship with Mandy Power,

she'd have fucking killed him.

That she would've fucking killed him.

And there's no other way to put that.

So he's obviously not gonna let it get out

that he was seeing her best friend.

He wasn't a well liked individual.

He had some serious previous convictions.

And people do strange
things when they ask it.

There's no way on

this earth she'd ever have an affair with

that man.

Which version of what Morris says,

do they want to believe?

Why was he changing his story every five,

10 minutes.

He's a killer.

He's a murderer.

-Good evening.

The most eagerly awaited
murder trial in years

has finally begun.

Just before 10 o'clock

this morning,

the van bringing David
Morris the short distance

from Swansea Prison swept into

the court precincts.

Inside, the 39 year old scrap metal merchant

from Craig Cefn Parc.

He denies all the charges against him.

It was a huge trial.

It was in Swansea Crown Court.

Not the modern courthouse but

the old fashioned courtroom over the road.

It was very Dickensian.

There were loads of journalists,

loads of cameramen waiting for

the various actors in this trial.

The family of his alleged victims had

arrived shortly before
in two people carriers.

In the packed public gallery, too,

were the defendant's fathers, sister,

and daughters.

I think people wanted
to know about it because

Clydachs a little village.

And the fact that three generations of

one family were battered to death.

And they wanted to know why.

And I'm not sure we know the answer now.

Don't think we do, do we?

This is the first proper
day of the first trial.

And you know, I've put here, 10:30,

David Morris comes in and then

Patrick Harrington QC,

he starts his opening speech.

Patrick Harrington is a great barrister.

He's from Ebbw Vale in the valleys.

He's very theatrical.

Patrick Harrington is the sort of barrister

that if you are accused of murder,

you'd want him on your team.

But at David Morris's trial,

he was the QC for the prosecution.

-Right.

This is a case where four victims

of one family were bludgeoned to death

by the defendant, David Morris.

When you have heard all of this evidence,

it will be your conclusion that

the killer had a number of attributes

and the capacity for
extreme rage and violence.

This was not merely murder,

this was a massacre.

The prosecution put the case against

David Morris on several bases.

Firstly, that he lied about the ownership of

the chain and he continued to lie,

even swearing on his children's life,

that that was not his chain.

As the murder

investigation intensified,

the chain was the focus of huge publicity.

Detectives called a news conference in

the hope of getting new leads.

The original phrase,

which had been used by the press was,

"Find the owner of the chain and you find

the murderer."

And that's what we did.

Builder Eric Williams said,

David Morris asked him to buy

an identical chain to show the police.

He wasn't

a normal member of the public.

He was a flawed member of the public

and someone with a criminal record.

In 1987, he was jailed for

conspiracy to rob and robbery.

He was given a four year sentence.

He had previous

convictions for serious
violence and took drugs.

He was a person with

a capacity for explosive rage

and extreme violence.

At a local pub, on the night of the killing,

Mr. Morris had been heard criticizing

Mandy Power.

That was the calm before the storm,

the prosecution claim.

Patrick Harrington told the call that

the defendant killed each of them because

Mandy Power had rejected his sexual advances.

When crimes of this sort

are committed,

there is only one living
person who can tell you

what happened.

And he is not going to tell you.

The crime scene video was

a very effective tool for the prosecution

and it showed the jury from the start,

the horror of the scene that they were gonna

have to confront in the following weeks.

He had

an argument with Mandy
Power when she repelled

his sexual advances.

She made it clear that
she wanted nothing to do

with men.

The greatest violence
was shown to all victims.

It was an orgy of savagery.

It would not take long for a powerful man

to quell an invalid, two
children, and one woman.

Prosecutor,

Patrick Harrington QC warned the jury that

the police video contained
scenes that were bound

to be distressing.

Harrowing images of the battered bodies of

Mandy Power and her two little girls.

Showing their terrible injuries in

graphic detail.

Halfway through the screening,

a young male juror collapsed and he was taken

to Swansea Singleton Hospital by ambulance.

I do remember putting

my head between my knees because

I almost passed out.

The video was taken after

the fire officers had brought the bodies

out of the house.

It's not like

when you watch a murder mystery on the TV,

you know that the people in

the video are not dead, they're alive,

but these are real people.

It was intense.

Obviously the court had to see

this video and the jurors
had to see this video.

-Did they?

They didn't need to see the video.

Because it was so prejudicial.

It didn't matter who was the defendant,

these images,

they didn't need to see them.

Mr. Patrick Harrington's opening was

far more about theatricals and drama

rather than substance.

That appeared to be his style.

But the defense case was based on

the forensics at the scene.

And the one important
thing to establish here was

the sequence of deaths.

The fiberglass pole that

we found on the landing was in fact,

the weapon that killed all four of them.

And we found blood on the pole that matched

that of Katie, Emily, and Mandy.

But because there was no detectable level

of blood standing from Doris,

the most logical
explanation is that Doris was

the first to die.

Any blood from Doris
could have been wiped off by

the offender.

And then after that,

the person could have
waited in the house until

the family came home.

This puts the killer in

Doris's bedroom first,

not downstairs having an
argument with Mandy over

a sexual encounter.

It's Mandy he would've killed or attacked

if he was being refused sex.

It just doesn't fit with David Morris being

the killer.

To be a good defense lawyer,

you've got to put enough doubt before a jury.

And the defense case was that

the murders were probably committed

by Alison Lewis.

A vibrator was found inside

Mandy when her body was recovered.

We took some DNA swabs from

the smeary staining on
the vibrator and also from

the inner inner thigh of Mandy.

And the DNA was a mixture of material from

Mandy and also some which could be from

Alison Lewis.

Alison Lewis's DNA was found on

the inside of Mandy's thighs.

There's no timeframe.

We don't know when that DNA was left.

But David Morris's DNA is not on her thighs.

There is stronger evidence
against somebody else

than you have against David Morris.

Members of the jury, there's your doubt.

Alison Lewis is

a key prosecution witness.

And for three hours today, she stood before

a packed courtroom and told the jury about

her background and her lesbian lifestyle.

The mother of twin girls had battled with

her sexuality until she
took up women's rugby.

She realized then she was gay,

but always hid her secret from her

Police Sergeant husband.

The defense strategy was always that

Dai Morris didn't commit the murders.

That the finger of suspicion was pointed

firmly at Alison Lewis.

And to that end, they brought

a number of defense witnesses.

One of whom was a martial arts expert.

And he got the fiberglass pole

that had been used with
such devastating force

and said it could be
used in a martial arts way.

And the significance of that is that

Alison Lewis was a second Dan in karate.

Under cross examination by the defense,

Alison Lewis admitted that shortly after

the murders,

she'd begun an affair with an old girlfriend

and was questioned in detail about her

martial arts expertise.

She said she was a
Black Belt British Champion

and was trained to use a karate bow,

a long wooden pole.

She was shown the murder weapon and said

the pole she used was lighter.

It was all smoke and mirrors.

Let's say this about who.

How can we twist the evidence to make

it look like her?

And I was just in awe of it all.

Disgusted, really.

The lesbian lover of

murdered mother, Mandy Power has been

telling Swansea Crown Court of

their passionate affair.

Former Policewoman Alison Lewis.

And I think I was in

the witness box for four days.

The jury of her love for

the divorcee.

They brought everything up.

Every personal relationship,

sexual things.

It was completely, I was on trial,

not David Morris.

Everything I said, everything I did,

how I behaved.

The jury heard how she tried

to commit suicide because she was so

grief stricken.

She was then admitted
to a psychiatric hospital.

A year later, she was.

My relationship with Mandy.

It tore me to shreds.

Everything that me and
Mandy felt for each other

was used, now, against me.

The film "Armageddon" was

a film that Mandy Power
and Alison Lewis loved

to watch together.

But the theme song, which
is a song by Aerosmith,

"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing,"

had become their song.

There was evidence at
the scene that there were

a number of videos
downstairs in the living room.

And there was clear evidence that

the killer was handling them.

But the only video that was missing was

this "Armageddon" video.

And the person who gave us that evidence was

a young 16 year old by
the name of Louise Pugh.

Louise Pugh borrowed the "Armageddon" video.

But she had posted it back that night.

Why has the "Armageddon" video

got to be back at Mandy's house?

She said "Me and Alison want to

watch it if she comes down tonight."

Tell me about that night then.

I went in my house.

I got my jacket and the video.

Closed the door and I went round to Mandy's.

I wrote a note.

And I put the note in
the sleeve of the video.

Walked down around to Mandy's through front.

The door was locked.

So I knocked it, but obviously,

I knew nobody was there,

I just thought Doris would've shouted.

So I posted the video through.

A little while afterwards,

another police officer came to see me.

He asked me again about
the "Armageddon" video.

If the cassette was in the box.

I knew it was because I checked.

And he told me that

the actual cassette

from inside the video box was found

in Alison's home.

So why would that be there?

If I had posted it through the Saturday?

How did she get it?

Why has it taken 'til today

to tell us about the note and video going

to Mandy's house on Saturday night?

I wanted to retrace my steps

and make sure I was saying the truth.

And not just lying.

Have you lied at all to me

or anybody else in the inquiry?

No.

What you told me this morning.

Louise Pugh was important in

so far as the evidence
that she gave surrounding

this "Armageddon" video.

Because she was adamant that she'd returned

it to Mandy that night.

Could all this have happened on

another Saturday?

No.

I'm not changing what I said for no-one.

-We called her as a
defense witness and she went

into the box.

And then Mr. Patrick
Harrington cross examined

her.

-She gave evidence about
the presence or absence

of the film "Armageddon,"

but the evidence she
gave was not supported by

any other source.

And she was reluctant to acknowledge that

she might have been
wrong, which she plainly was.

-I knew that I posted it on the 26th.

I was not gonna back down.

I was done with them walking all over me.

Louise, at the time was

a very vulnerable young girl.

And Patrick Harrington was pushing her on

inconsistencies in her evidence.

And it was at that point that she lost it.

And she swore at Pat
Harrington and stormed outta

the witness box in front of the jury.

And it destroyed for the defense,

that witness.

A witness in

the Clydach murder trial

has stormed out of court
and swore at barristers

as the prosecution
challenged her evidence saying

it didn't match her
statements to police after

the killings.

The prosecution claimed that 19 year old

Louise Pugh mixed up dates.

When giving an account of the day before

the murders.

When the jury retired,

I don't think anybody knew exactly which way

things were gonna go.

We waited for days
outside and it was really hot.

I remember it was 3:38 on a Friday afternoon.

And we were called in.

I remember Mr. Hutchison going

to hold my hand.

And I saw the jury walk back in,

they were to my left.

And the ladies were in tears.

They were crying and they sat down.

-And the foreman looked directly at

David Morris.

And I thought, Oh, well maybe it's not

guilty verdict because juries don't tend to

look people in the face if

they're gonna convict them.

-And I remember in that split second,

we were all thinking the same thing.

We've got this, it's in the bag.

The right decision is gonna be made.

They're going to find him not guilty.

When the guilty verdict

came through it was um,

It was just,

I honestly can't describe it.

And I just wanted to sit by him.

I just wanted to go and sit next to him.

'Cause he was just there.

And I thought he was being accused of

this horrific murder

and he's just there on his own.

I just wanted to go and sit by him.

That was a,

'cause we've always
been there for each other,

you know?

And he's always been there for me.

And I just wanted to sit by him.

-When the verdicts were delivered.

I sat in court with the family.

And the foreman stood up and pronounced

the verdicts.

It was rather strange.

I felt I'd be wanting to punch the sky.

Yes!

You know, fantastic.

It wasn't that at all.

It was to me quite a sublime moment.

And it was something
that I just look back and um

I thought of Katie.

I'll do that a bit again.

I had two daughters who were

younger than Katie and Emily.

And I can see my children grow up

and love them and enjoy them.

And you know, that's been denied

to Mandy's family.

It has been three long

and difficult years since Mom,

Mandy, Katie, and Emily were

so clearly taken from us.

And today we know

that evil person
responsible for this will spend

the rest of his life behind bars.

But this will never be enough for

the sense of pain and loss that we feel

every day,

nor for the sheer hell and fear all our

family went through that night.

Was it the right verdict?

-I think the only person who knows whether

they committed those murders or not

is David Morris.

No one knows 100%, what went on in that house

and who was responsible.

What I can say is that everybody on

the press bench that sat through

that trial felt that the right verdict,

on the basis of the evidence

that was presented in the court

was the right verdict.

This has been an extraordinary trial where

the defense claimed Alison Lewis had killed

those she loved.

-I am pleased with the verdict today.

Justice has finally been achieved.

While standing trial for murder,

the judicial system afforded David Morris,

the luxury of being
innocent until proven guilty.

What was it like when you heard

the guilty verdict?

What emotions did you feel?

Angry, I think.

Angry that he had done this to people I love.

Angry that he'd been allowed to get away with

it for so long.

And relief.

I have felt the loss of Mandy,

Katie, and Emily, Doris more than anyone

will ever know.

However, I have never lost sight of

the pain Mandy's family must have

and still are suffering.

And I wish them the strength to move forward

in an attempt to rebuild their lives.

As my family and myself now have to work at

rebuilding ours.

So you must have thought that

that was it.

-Yeah, to a degree.

I thought things are gonna be more positive.

He's being convicted.

I thought I could start to rebuild,

get on with my life.

That things would get better.

That's what I thought.

But little did I know,

it was gonna be short lived.

Today it was claimed that

Swansea Solicitor, David
Hutchison should never

have represented Morris.

Because he also represented this man,

Sergeant Steven Lewis,
a serving police officer.

-Mr.
-David Hutchison had

represented both Steven
and Stewart Lewis when

the police were investigating

them in connection with the Clydach murders.

He had agreed with

David Hutchison that
he wouldn't be blamed for

the murders at Morris's trial.

I wasn't aware that there was
