We began to check out
Troy's alibi.

We knew what to expect
at the Red Spot.

It was a standard stop for
touts, past-posters and girls
who couldn't keep an address.

It was early.
They were just getting ready
to open up for the day.

The bar boy
worked the morning shift
cleaning and stacking.

He got off at 1:15
so he could tell us nothing
about the previous afternoon.

The bartender identified
himself
as Fred Kemp.

His name was
on the liquor license.
He said he was the boss.

He told us substantially
the same story
we'd gotten from Max Troy.

That Troy was in the bar
Saturday, April 9, the day
Miller Starkie was killed.

He couldn't be sure
of the exact hours.

The waitress' name
was Ethel Dawson.

She could add little to what
the bartender told us.

She stated that Max Troy
was in the place.
She wasn't sure of the time.

The chef told us his name
was Emil Porter. He remembered
Max Troy being there.

He said Troy stuck
to his usual diet: canned baby
food, half-and-half, custard.

He wasn't sure of the time.
Saturday's a busy day.

Mug shots were shown
to all of 'em.

They recognized Miller Starkie
as having been in the place,
but couldn't remember when.

They recognized most suspects.
They couldn't place them in the
