It's been a minute since we've been here.

Well as soon as the album was finished, we started writing the set.

- Day one of us all sitting together working on the set.

and you want those things to all feel cohesive

and also have impact.

we're listening to the final mix down.

- There's something like really primal about a wall of drums.

And we were just dancing around like a bunch of hooligans up there.

Every single element of that is an awesome shift

in energy and movement.

- It wasn't until we had, like, our crew now that we really started

dialing in what it looks like, what it sounds like.

Treat that as, like, an actual accent.

You should go pretty much to match here and then just turn your hand over.

That's where it started really becoming cohesive.

Guys, when we grab each other on two,

we need to use a lot of energy and core strength to get past

these next people here.

We'll write the drum line pieces as best we can,

not being drum line members.

And then Ben and Kali do a great job of kind of interpreting that,

adding on to it, like, then adding choreo onto that.

And that's why we implemented drums, like, in the first place.

There's all these things that you could be playing,

but no one can really tell what you're doing.

This is such a visual thing.

You know exactly what's being played when you see it happen.

We just got to see

pieces we wrote on a tiny MIDI keyboard in a small room

get played by a very professional drum line

and it's pulling on my heart strings.

It's a beautiful moment.

This was the studio set up.

And there was a long table

and we had all our machines and, like, keyboards and stuff.

We were down here a lot.

And then there was always, like, friends coming through from college,

and they would just, like, walk in here and ask us what we were doing.

Sometimes, people would walk by and be like,

“What afe you go Y3 ' . now?” playing "Qht

- Yeah, yeah. 'You're being really loud.'

Um....

Yeah, it's super surreal.

You know. It's the biggest show we've ever done.

And there's ninety people on the road with twelve semi-trucks.

- Obviously, we got lasers.

- Right.

- Pyro is getting installed next week.

- Custom, custom.

- Harrison and Clay have always kind of been together in the stage design.

And this time around we decided to split them apart from each other.

So, Harrison and Clay now each have their own riser

and we've utilized the center pathway,

which the drum line uses to go in and out.

Also, we've decided to build these custom steps with built in LED.

- That ain't moving.

- We have this like icosahedron shape and it's this idea that, like,

the 'ico' is the heartbeat.

And then these echoes are rippling out from it.

- (Radio) Guys, we are doing a full show run right now.

- We're about to do the first run through of the set.

This is actually the first time we are getting to see

what we've programmed live on the rig.

- (Radio) Go house music.

- We don't know if it's going to translate

It feels disconnected, right?

- Yeah.

- So I think that that was one of our major concerns.

- There could just be a laser moment for the drop out on “The Last Goodbye.”

Just go to one thing sometimes.

-You have like all these incredible tools.

Just finding the right ways to use it

and use it in conjunction with each other.

We know what you want.

We've been doing this long enough that if you say,

“Hey, at this moment, I want this rise.”

Give us the note, let us work on it, because it's going to take us time.

- We've designed an hour-and-a-half for 15,000 people

and it could go so wrong.

- Everything.

-And those, and that brightness can decay

Let the visual really pop.

- Small little changes take a huge amount of effort

when everything's at this scale.

- Can you turn the 'ico' on too?

Yeah, that's kind of nice.

- The whole thing's built on moments.

then the whole thing kind of falls apart.

I think old Luke and I have been looking at this

like on a Excel spreadsheet for the last, uh...

couple months.

This is all a lot different than that.

You know, “cell C-4” doesn't quite hit as hard.

- What's so cool is the fact that we have

the same team around us since the beginning.

It's the same people that we were friends with,

who believed in us,

who kind of got our vision and had their own, too.

- So me and Sean went to high school together.

He was super into film stuff.

He always had his camera out

and was always asking us questions.

-And then he ran into Harrison.

And he actually introduced us.

And that was kind of the genesis of this project.

- Luke and Sean have been with us since the beginning.

Luke was my best friend in design school.

When we started going on tour,

we needed someone to operate the projector and do some visuals.

Um, the “lPlay” visuals.

He just kind of did it to come along for the ride.

They're like, “you're going to put this projector and this screen up.”

Yeah, I don't even know how to work a projector.

Everyone's like, “yeah, just figure it out.”

Yeah, if you have a ladder

that'd be great.

It just looks so much better

when the screen is like fully in the air.

It looks so pro.

- He was a professional skier.

- Nice!

- He was going to go to Japan and ski

and we had to pull him away for our first tour.

And it was, like, the hardest decision he ever made.

- I never thought that this was, like, going to be a thing.

Harrison and Clay are making music.

This is going to last for six months.

and just travel around in a van?

- We were trying.

And then as we kind of progress through the song

we realize, like, this army is at odds with this king.

It's been amazing

to see Luke progress from projecting

just on a sheet to now creating entire worlds,

creating characters,

working with artists all across the globe for the show.

Honestly, the biggest challenge is just, like,

there's so many things.

It's like we're starting from scratch.

- People may not even know

every visual they see on the LED wall behind us

has been created from scratch for the entire show.

- What kind of environment is it?

An old environment. A cleaner environment?

Yeah, and I think it should feel

like some dystopian museum,

but I want it to kind of fall off to black.

So you're really focused on these two main characters.

So maybe even like when we see the King rising up,

like, a few detail shots.

- The kicks and the snares are just

being triggered by, like, light sources.

- That's what I have so much pride in

is, like, we thought they could do it.

- Yeah, let's just do one once through, pause, and then...

- Everyone's like, “just hire a director”

and “just hire a way better visual person.”

Like, “look, they worked with this person and this person.”

And we've never felt that way.

- So, obviously a couple of programming things that we need-

we already have notes for.

We'll break into individual groups and make this thing even better!

- For us, it's always felt like, “who gets it?”

I think one of my ultimate goals is to live on the water.

I don't feel relaxed very often,

but for some reason just looking at water is so hypnotizing

Who am I as a person?

I've been doing this for six years straight without even, like,

thinking about anything else.

- Tomorrow:

do the show, 9:20 hit,

shower, hang out and leave around 2 a.m.

to head to Madison.

I don't know what airport we are in

or what state we are in right now.

I feel like we were really ready after touring for

eight years to

finally relax and make music

under not having pressure.

But instead I feel like we were met with,

like, returning to a life we hadn't figured out.

Like, all the issues we may be running from

when we're on tour.

Kind of running from ourselves and distracting ourselves

with the things that we do.

So, my point is, it's been hard to write music.

- Part of me is like, “I really like it.”

-Yeah, and I think... - The other part of me is, like, doubtful about it.

The problem isn't recreating the sound.

The problem is the sound itself needs to be different.

what the album means.

since, like, sophomore year in college.

we started collecting all this old family footage.

And going through this again at my age now,

I felt like there was a lot of similarities happening of,

- I think we just re-approach the chorus,

synth-wise, everything-wise.

diving more into ourselves

- The first time

that I discovered ODESZA,

I had snuck into Coachella.

I was in high school.

I was probably about seventeen.

And I just had this really captivating moment like,

“Whoa!”

“This is the coolest thing I've seen all weekend.”

“Who are they?”

- My girlfriend told me that this band is coming to town.

I still remember, like, they had this,

like, big neon pink icosahedron on the stage.

I think I filmed almost every single song.

- It looks incredible. Thank you so much. - I made that one for myself tonight.

- I'd never heard of them before.

We were just kind of walking by the stage

and I was, like, “who are these guys?”

That was the best show I've ever seen.

when we were searching for samples for The Last Goodbye.

And what came to be was from this.

It's an incredible song

and it just caught us off guard.

And it was so special

we wanted to use it in some way.

The theme for our whole album

is kind of looking backwards

to see how we can move forward.

for the album itself.

comes from one of the lyrics Bettye says,

And that lyric encapsulated our whole album.

- I remember some pretty early conversations.

We can talk about, like,

“Man, if we could only get a show at Sasquatch.”

That was kind of our big goal at the time.

And then we did that that year

and then were like,

you know, “damn, what do we...what do we do now?”

But to have it reach this point-

to be doing these size shows with our friends

and family and loved ones-

it still does not register.

It still blows my mind every day.
