that has slumbered for a long time.

And is once again being awoken.

Wrexham are promoted!

[narrator 1] While the spotlight
may well be firmly on Wrexham,

bringing all eyes with it,

the former bustling mining town

is finding many areas are still suffering.

Something our plucky cochairmen
planned to rectify

with some very practical
business decisions.

Nowhere is their instinct to waste time
and money more perfectly illustrated

than in the birthday wars.

Battle one commenced with Ryan
dedicating a urinal in Rob's honor

before Rob returned the fire
with his big red balloon.

Last year, Ryan conjured up
some Hollywood magic

by mobilizing a musical army.

- It's called, "It's McElhenney."
-"It's McElhenney."

Hopefully, that's how
you actually pronounce it 'cause...

We wrote the whole song.

Yes, that's Oscar winners Pasek and Paul,

the same Pasek and Paul responsible
for the music in Dear Evan Hansen,

La La Land,

The Greatest Showman
and one Emmy away from an EGOT,

who wrote a little song
for Rob's birthday.

Is Rob good enough for this?

[narrator 1]
But this year, in a classy counterattack,

Rob is taking all that exposure

and focusing it firmly
on the heart of the town

to make more of an impact

than a silly stunt
involving a big-time celebrity.

[Pratt clears throat]

[pen clicks]

- What am I doing here?

You know how Ryan and I are always doing
these elaborate things

for each other's birthdays?

- Yes.
- Yes. Okay.

- So, this year...
- I don't... I don't know, but I'm excited.

Um, this year, uh,
my idea involves a park.

And 'cause I was on P...

one big celebrity megastar.

Chris helped reveal
that Rob is building a park

in Ryan's honor in Wrexham,

so they can have movies,
pop-up restaurants

and community events that will
hopefully drive a ton of foot traffic

to revitalize business in the area
of the town where it's needed.

But the big question is,
if you build it, will they come?

Come on, let's have a kick.

- Come on.
- Go on.

It's a Wrexham ball as well.

Again.

- Ah. Poor.
- Not a very good... [chuckles]

- [chuckles] Yeah.

I'm Andy Williams.

I'm the mayor of the city of Wrexham
and the county borough.

I used to hear people saying

if you asked them where they came from,
they would say, "We...

We live just outside Chester."

But now you've got people that live
just outside Chester

saying that they live
just outside Wrexham.

I think the easiest way
of describing the link

is the club is the community
and the community is the club.

So, this is the site
of Rob and Ryan's new park.

- Yeah.
- [Williams] It's, uh...

It's a far cry from where it was.
It was a derelict and dilapidated area.

[narrator 2] There's an area
in the center of Wrexham

that was once, for 33 years,
an important public hall

until, in 1906, it tragically burned down.

It then served the community
as the Wrexham Hippodrome Theater

and film venue for a hundred years
all the way until 2008,

when it also tragically burned down.

The site has largely remained closed
to the public since that time.

I'm really, really looking forward
to seeing this progress into, uh,

Rob and Ryan's vision,
really, for the community.

Looking better already.

[Williams] So I think it's pride.

Pride of belonging.

Pride of being part
of what the city of Wrexham is becoming.

Football's a massive part of it now.
There is...

I think we should have a stadium
for, like, 30,000.

- [laughs] You never know, you never know.
- Can't be... Can't be 15.

- It might come. It might come.
- Yeah. Can't be only 15.

Let's say, if we keep on getting promoted.
Then, more people...

Yeah. What's gonna happen
if they gonna qualify?

Yeah. Well, I hope so 'cause
I got a bet on them go... qualifying.

I've had them on since they were...
before they got promoted last time.

- How much did you bet on?
- Oh, I can't say.

I think one of the risks
that we run at Wrexham

is the danger of the popularity
of, uh, the documentary

and, uh, the growth of... of interest
in Wrexham from around the world

prices out local people...

fans, people that have been part
of the club for much longer than we have.

And we have to be on our guard
at all times,

as I say, to center local opinion,

local, uh, uh, thinking,

and ensure that, you know,
the tail doesn't wag the dog.

The first aspiration when we started
was to get into the EFL.

And it's only when we got into the EFL
that our horizons have broadened.

If we'd have turned around and said

we want to make as much progress
through the EFL as quickly as possible,

then we've always got a position
to defend.

But, no, that was never going
to be Rob and Ryan's style,

you know, and Rob's in particular.

We want to get to the Premier League,

and we want to get there
as quickly as possible.

You know, you set yourself
a target of that nature,

you're putting a metric down
for people to measure you against.

And how long are people prepared to wait

until it's a case of Rob McElhenney
and Ryan Reynolds failing their objective

of getting Wrexham to the Premier League?

[sighs]

Wrexham have just been promoted
into the football leagues,

and there's one question
on everyone's lips

and that is, when can we expect them
in the Premier League,

and how much will it cost for Wrexham
to make it from the fourth tier

up into the Premier League?

Well, we handed this problem
to Tifo's financial expert, Abhishek Raj.

He crunched the numbers and he came
back to us with a few estimations.

So he estimates for Wrexham to get
from League Two to League One,

it's gonna cost around $10 million.

The same again from League One
to the Championship.

But once you get to the Championship,
those costs rocket right up.

So he reckons that once you get
to the Championship,

the cost of getting
into the Premier League

is then gonna be
around $150 to $200 million.

Now, I've included
these figures in dollars

because the owners of Wrexham
are American.

Now, those owners are, in fact,
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney,

who are very famous actors
in the United States, I'm told.

Which is good news
when you're in the National League

because they have a lot of money,

but relatively to the Championship,
they do not have a huge amount of money.

[Harvey] Getting stuck
in the Championship,

from a footballing perspective,

a lot of fans would accept.

You know, playing Championship football
week in, week out

was a distant pipe dream for Wrexham fans
before Rob and Ryan came along.

- Shaun.
- Hey, Phil.

[Harvey] The challenge of us getting stuck
in the Championship is the financial cost.

Even now, there's already investment
in the ground and the staff

and bringing in high-caliber players
like Boyle and Evans.

Also, bringing in players
with Premier League experience

like James McClean, Fletcher
and Arthur Okonkwo.

[players chattering]

Rob and Ryan had put
over eight million pounds

into Wrexham Football Club

to get us into...
to get us into League Two.

And although Rob and Ryan
seem to have a lot of money,

the net worth of Premier League clubs
is exponentially higher.

Most Premier League clubs have
owners worth billions of dollars.

That's billion with a B, not million.
That's a lot.

That dwarfs Rob and Ryan's pocketbooks.

Rob and Ryan are going to be taking
bigger and bigger risks

the higher they go up in the leagues
because there is a vast difference

between Hollywood actor money
and, say, oil money.

From a financial point of view, it seems
clear that Wrexham are well set up

to fly through the divisions
and get through to the Premier League.

They may even do it in record timing.

We're looking at a best estimate
of between seven and ten seasons

before we see Wrexham
in the Premier League

playing sustainable
Premier League football.

[Harvey] You know, we're putting it all in
to try and be successful.

You know, at some stage,
if they aren't successful in doing that,

people may just turn on them.

It's difficult to see that
at this moment in time,

but that's the reality.

Football clubs fall out with their owners
on a regular basis,

and there's no reason that Wrexham
won't go down that same route

unless we get everything right.

[podcaster 1] Well, here we are, everyone.
Uh, what's been going on?

Looking back at the performances
on the pitch over the last several weeks,

have Wrexham turned a corner?

[Edwards] I think we have.

We picked up points
in nine straight matches

starting with that impressive win
over Salford City a month ago.

We're getting a bit spoilt now.

[commentator 1] ...middle by Davis,
who'll see if he can find Mullin

edge of the area, right-footed shot... goal!

[Edwards] It's been pretty amazing,
especially to get that win against Notts.

[podcaster 1] It's not just
the strikers that are on fire.

Okonkwo has kept four clean sheets
since coming aboard.

It was a big bold move, but it paid off.

[commentator 1] It's saved. Okonkwo!

Instead, Evans works
a lovely ball to Mendy.

He drills it across.

That's a brilliant goal by Tozer!

[Edwards] With this win
on Remembrance Day,

that's eight straight matches
without defeat.

With Wrexham looking good in attack,
and Okonkwo very, very solid in goal,

the Red Dragons are on fire.

These were all mostly vacant

- before we got the land. Yeah.
- Wow. Uh-huh.

[McElhenney] Um... Oh.

Soon is relative, but, yes, coming.

[Trainor] The more people that come here,

the more people
that are gonna start coming here.

That's the idea.

[McElhenney] We want to revitalize
this whole area here.

And as you can see, even with some
of the construction that's happening,

there are already stores
that are popping up.

And, I mean, there...
there was no signage on these,

you know,
when we first started the process.

Next week, there's a town hall,

uh, where I will interact with, you know,
the townsfolk, local businesses...

- [McElhenney] Hmm.
- ...get their feedback.

You're the face of the... of the operation.

- I'll dress up, you know. I'm not gonna...

I'm not having to wear this.

Okay.

We want to do something motivating
and powerful for this community and town.

But you can't just snap your fingers
and make something like that happen.

- We wanted to work with the council...

...to turn it into like an actual park.

Yeah. So we wanted to be sure
that we were getting community feedback.

In the winter, that's a perfect ice rink.

- [Swarberg] Yes.
- What about putting in, um,

seasonal fruit trees?

I don't think we can go as big as trees
'cause those take a lot to bare fruits.

Would it have kind of water facilities?

We always used to have
a play session on there, like...

Around the shopping area, they put pianos.

There's a queue now.
This is the first queue of the day.

[Swarberg, bystanders laughing]

almost like he's vomiting children.

I mean... We're... I mean,
we're considering everything.

We've only been used to
that space being derelict...

- [Wrexham fan] Yeah.
- ...which is very sad.

Because there's
lots of small businesses here

that are really trying
to expand their business

and make the town, the city even better
and a greater place to live.

- [person 1] Lovely. I'm so hungry.

- [person 3] 'Cause the boys always ate...

[Valerie] Yeah. Husband and wife.

from our Zimbabwean culture into Wales.

Sharing our authenticity of food
and love for food,

adding those layers and layers of flavor.

Celebrating flavors of Africa in Wales.

Wrexham needs a spice shop. It does.

[Valerie] You got the key?

[Valerie] I'm the cofounder of Goch & Co.

- Come on. Come through.
- [Stan laughs]

[Valerie] This is our little shop.

And we have our chutneys,
our condiments, our jams,

and we bring in the flavors
from Zimbabwean culture into Wales.

So I moved here because of school,

- but I also came here for love.
- [Stan laughs]

I met Stan when I was 12 years old,
and we're childhood sweethearts.

I came because his family
was based in Wrexham as well.

- 32 years we're married now.
- [Stan] 32 years we're now...

[Valerie] And then we just fell in love
with Wrexham and the people in it.

Coming to Wrexham was a bit of a risk

because there were not many
people of color around.

We didn't know if people would accept
a Black woman running a business.

I had to prove myself.

I wanna learn more
about what Wrexham is about.

I wanna bring the wealth of my culture
and share it with you as well.

Coming into Wrexham,

I found most of the foods
was lamb and boiled potatoes.

Coming from Zimbabwe,
we're used to strong flavors.

And bringing those flavors
to Wrexham was a gamble

because we didn't know
if people would accept

what we had offering

because it's a different culture
coming into the Welsh arena.

We thought, well,
maybe if we start with a mild sauce,

maybe we'll get acceptance.

And then over time, we'll build tolerance,
I suppose, when it comes to heat.

- [people chattering]
- [Valerie] And then now,

we've got nine different flavors
from really extra mild to wild.

It's about the flavor.
You get the sweetness.

- You get the fruit. You get the chili.
- [laughing]

[Valerie] When we moved to Wrexham
from Zimbabwe 30 years ago,

there was a nightlife,
there was an atmosphere, community.

There were amazing shops to actually go.

I used to spend hours in town.

Restaurants were really buzzing.
But over the years, it's seen a decline.

A lot of the nightlife has
literally almost died.

Wrexham was not perceived
as a place to be.

Since we've had Ryan and Rob,

everywhere we go, the moment you mention
we are Goch & Co and from Wrexham,

they're like, "Yes. Wrexham."

Everyone is really hyped
about what's happening in Wrexham.

And because of that, I think it's drawing
people to want to invest in Wrexham.

And we want more of that.

I would love to see Wrexham
the way it was 30 years ago

with more vibrance, more color.

And now it almost feels like
it's coming back,

but it's not quite back yet.

It's not quite there.
We've still got a long way to go.

[Edwards]
They've sold out the away end, again.

Morecambe fans and others in League Two
are desperate to come here.

We'll have over 10,000 diehards
at the Racecourse.

The Reds find themselves in fourth place,

just outside
the automatic promotion places.

Hopefully, a win today will get Wrexham
back into the top three.

the investments we're making as a club,

but also the investments
the community is making at large.

Meaning the less inclined people are
to reduce their expectations

of what we are
and what we should be achieving.

I think that this football club
and this whole thing, the documentary,

all of it is never more than
two or three steps away from catastrophe.

This is the beginning
of what's gonna be the new venture.

A wine bar.

We opted for the vault 33.
It's a beautiful building.

It dates back to the late 1800s
where it was a bank.

Those racks will be what carry
the champagne and the wine.

It's very industrial,
the feel that we're going for.

You know, we'd seen a lot of pictures
of the building as it was,

and we always wanted to make sure
that we respect its heritage.

Have you spoke to Wayne then?
'Cause I haven't.

I'll say, "Look forward to catching up."

- How are you? You okay?
- Yeah. I'm good.

- I like your floor. Is this brand-new?
- Went in yesterday.

There's going to be a wood flooring

It's great that you're here, mate,

'cause I wanted to pick your brains
about everything really.

Purely beer or you gonna do food?

I think the food side of things is
something that maybe is a phase two.

You're probably doing it right.
I mean, don't run before you can walk.

There's so many different aspects
to running a business in hospitality.

You have to pay taxes, PAYE.
You have to pay into the system.

- That's how it works.
- Yeah, yeah. The security...

It's a huge cost, um,

but, sadly, you need it,
where you have risks.

Pissed up football fans,
sometimes they can't behave.

That's probably
my one biggest sort of anxiety, concern.

It won't happen overnight.

- There's gonna be mistakes.
- Yeah.

I guess it's a million miles away from,
well, any sort of thing you've done.

It is. It is absolutely.

[muted conversation]

[Roberts] Football was all I ever knew.

I'm looking at this
as a new career for me.

I think for the footballers,
you're in such a bubble.

You know, running out
onto the Racecourse pitch

with X amount of fans,
you can't replicate it.

And then somebody turns a switch
and it's gone.

And you know you're never going back
into anything similar.

The industry that I'm going into now,

there's been a lot of sports people

that have tried to kind of go
down that road.

And a number of them successful,

but probably a greater percentage
that weren't.

Everybody goes through different
ups and downs with businesses.

None of us know what the future holds.

- [McElhenney] Hey.
- [Roberts] Rob.

- How you doing?
- How are you?

- [Roberts] I'm good.
- Good to see you, brother.

- Great to see you.
- [McElhenney] It's really beautiful.

Yeah, it's become more of a love affair
now, in terms of restoring it to,

you know,
what was its sort of former beauty.

Having owned a bar
for a good, uh, 15 years,

I can tell you that it's more of
a love affair than it is anything else.

[both laugh]

The bar without the top yet,

so we gotta find
a nice workable top for it.

The reason a bar is called a bar
has nothing to do with this.

It's this bar down here where
the cowboys would put in their boots.

- Did you know that?
- No.

Now, I'm saying that with such certainty

- um, because I heard it once.
- Ah, okay.

But see, if you just say something
as if you're 100% sure...

- Confidence.
- ...then... then it's true.

We're just missing a Four Walls bottle.

- It just so happens...
- [Roberts laughs]

...that we have a bottle of Four Walls here.

Why don't we put the rum on this side

[McElhenney] When I first started acting,

really what I was doing
was working in bars.

I spent a lot of time
in rooms just like this.

- You're changing the taps.
- Yeah.

The bartender would be like,
"We're out of Guinness."

You gotta run downstairs
and redo the taps.

Yeah. I'm-I'm learning now,

and I'll be in The Turf today doing
a couple of hours before the game serving.

[McElhenney] There's just
so much history in these buildings.

- [Roberts] Yeah.
- You can utilize the history.

It feels good. [sniffs]

It smells good.

We haven't even had a chance
to talk about Mia and how she's doing.

- But I found out...
- Yeah.

...about Mia not making the club,
the same way that she found out.

And I went and saw it
and was, like, "This can't be true."

Um, not... not that I make
any of those decisions,

or that it was the right
or wrong decision,

just about communication.

- [Roberts] Yeah, yeah.
- How she found out,

which didn't feel right to me.

[Roberts] I had to have my dad's hat on,

making sure I was there for her if she
needed me, not getting too involved.

- [McElhenney] Mm-hmm.
- Because she's a 20-year-old young woman

that needed to sort of learn
as well how to deal with those situations.

And, for me, that was probably the...

the best thing to come out of it all is
that she handled it in such a way

that made me sort of step back
and say, "Wow, I'm..."

I was proud anyway,
but I'm even more proud now.

And she's studying
and living in Manchester.

She's on a degree
for international football business.

She's still doing what she loves,
and at the same time she's...

- Maybe a little bit of future proofing.
- [McElhenney] Mm-hmm.

You know, Ryan and I... It's easy for us
to say, "Well, we're not there day-to-day.

Um, we're not the ones that are...

We're hiring people to make those
decisions or create those pipelines."

But ultimately,
if we pass the buck like that

and don't take responsibility
or accountability,

then that's irresponsible.

We have to make sure that
that doesn't happen to the next person.

[Roberts] Now that's refreshing.

- That's refreshing. [chuckles]
- We're trying.

Some of the players
that are at Wrexham now,

they've got some fantastic businesses

that sort of complement
and run alongside their football.

And that's a sign
of the game off pitch has changed.

Whereas when I was playing,

you had to solely focus on
what was going on on pitch.

I think for the footballers, long-term,

I think... I think it...
I think it's a good thing. I do.

[Ollie Palmer]
Rob had a meeting with us last season.

It was amazing. He'd come out,
and he said, "Listen, lads."

I wanna have a quick conversation with you

that has nothing to do
with what's happening on the pitch.

"Ryan and myself..." Rob...
"wanna help you grow businesses."

I work in the same business, um,

as you do insofar
as our careers are short,

and we need to maximize our potential
as much as we possibly can.

So whether that means actual advice,
we're here for you.

Or actual, you know, exposure.

And then it turned out that he was dazed
from getting clocked in the face.

I was always worried about getting injured
in the sense that, as a goalkeeper,

you don't want to let down the manager,
the team, which is obviously not possible.

[medic] Just close your mouth,

[Okonkwo] I'm fine. I just want to sit up.

[Reynolds] You can see him

and tried moving it around and I was like,
"Yeah, that's not a good sign."

I was really in pain.

I really wanted to stay on and try
and help the team as much as I can.

For the fans, I know how much they
sacrifice to come and watch our games.

I know how invested they are in the club,
