[MUSIC PLAYING]
He's got to be doing 180 at least.
What happened to Cory and your father was no accident.
What do you mean?
Mr. Quaid wants to take over the lion.
He's done all the damage he can do me.
I couldn't care less about what Mr. Quaid wants.
I think it's time perhaps that John Moore
and I had a confrontation.
[TIRES SQUEALING]
[EXPLOSION]
NARRATOR: It began with Westworld.
3, 2, 1--
activate now.
NARRATOR: A futuristic playground
where people could act out their fantasies
with robots so sophisticated, it was impossible to tell them
from humans.
Your move.
[GUNSHOT]
NARRATOR: Suddenly, the robots changed,
turned into the deadly servants of their creator,
Simon Quaid, who took them beyond Westworld.
I have an impregnable army of loyal and unquestioning troops.
I've placed robots all over the world.
He wants it all.
He has one heck of a good chance of getting it
with those robots.
NARRATOR: Delos, builders of Westworld, must stop Quaid.
Assigned, his security chief, John Moore
and Special Agent Pam Williams.
Let's face it, John.
It's your wits against Quaid's machines.
All right, that's it.
Have it out on the track tomorrow nice and early.
OK, baby, let's go get that champagne.
Hey, time for a toast.
[CHEERING]
To the Lion, and to Corey Burns, who is not only driving it,
but as you all know, designed that beautiful new Gasohol
engine.
Which is going to put Lionstar Motors right back in the black.
It better, or I'm belly up and you're all out of a job.
What?
We can't let that happen.
No way.
Here's to it.
Are you going to tell the old man or am I?
I don't believe it.
Believe it.
It's official.
Well, it's about time.
Congratulations.
COREY: Wait a minute.
I suppose you're going to give me
the old line about how you always wanted me
to be your son-in-law, right?
No, no, no, no.
What I really wanted was for my daughter to marry somebody
upstanding, like John there.
Now that is a man of good taste.
John's going to be our best man.
I'll drink to that.
[ENGINE REVVING]
Corey tells me you got the TV people all locked up.
Yeah, well, it'd be a great sports event for them
and terrific publicity for us.
Corey races Bill Johnson on the 15th of next month, when
a Lion will beat the fastest stock
car and driver in the country--
in front of 50 million viewers.
We'll have it made.
Looking good, Corey.
325.
Hasn't even opened it up yet.
What do you think?
Well, we've got a good shot at it,
but there's a big difference between a trial run
and the racing against Johnson.
Oh, I sure wish it was me out there behind that wheel.
Those shocks we put in the front end are holding fine.
Much better, much more stable.
ERIC: Good.
Give me a reading on your coolant and oil temp?
Oil's fine.
Water's 180.
ERIC: Take her around again and open her up slow,
then come on at it.
6,400.
Like silk right now.
Oh, it's nice, guys.
He's got to be doing 180 at least.
Hey, old man, better go for it.
8,000.
[EXPLOSION]
[TIRES SQUEALING]
[CRASHING]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Well, that should take care of Lionstar Motors quite nicely.
That's it, Connie.
Take that stuff back to the lab.
Yes, sir.
So what are we going to tell John when
he gets back from the hospital?
We tell him the truth.
John can handle it.
Handle what?
That explosion was no accident.
What?
I found this small piece of transistor
sequence panel that was used to detonate a low-level explosive.
It was originally designed for Westworld.
Quaid-- damn.
How's Corey?
He's paralyzed from the waist down.
Oh, John, I'm sorry.
All right, look, John, you've been at the hospital
for 48 hours.
So why don't you go home, get some rest, and get cleaned up.
You still got that Middle East assignment.
No, I'm putting someone else on it.
You can't take this case.
Oh, yes I can.
Get everything you can on what Quaid's after.
I'll be at the hospital.
COREY: You're not going to marry a cripple.
You owe me a better excuse than that, Corey.
I didn't fall in love with your arms and legs.
I fell in love with what's inside of you.
Corey.
And I'm about as empty as I can be.
John, what do I do?
Hey, I know Corey.
He just needs a little time.
I love him.
Talk to him, please.
JOHN: Well, I struck out last time, and I'll try again.
If you came here to give me a pep talk, forget it.
JOHN: No pep talk--
reality.
Do you think this was an accident?
Somebody sabotaged that car and tried to kill you.
It doesn't make any difference what the reasons are.
You know I don't believe you.
You never ran away from a fight in your life.
I had legs to stand down before.
COREY: Oh, you had a lot of things to stand on.
Look, if you don't care about anything else, think of a lion.
Lionstar needs you to build that car.
And before his unfortunate accident,
he was four times NASCAR national champion.
Well liked by everyone both in and out of racing,
Corey Burns was considered by his peers to be one of the very
best, and was well on his way to joining
the ranks of racing immortals.
Racing won't seem the same without Corey Burns.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
You get out of here.
Get out of here!
You get out of here too.
Here's a financial study we did on Lionstar's company.
It's in the hole
Why is Quaid buying up Lionstar's outstanding notes?
Obviously he wants it to appear that Lionstar
engine is a failure.
That way he gains control of the company.
Wait a minute.
He's already taken over a few small oil producing
countries in the Middle East.
Right.
If Quaid could gain control of the oil suppliers
and Lionstar's Gasohol engine, which could have eased
the energy crunch, he'd come out looking like the good guy
and half the world would give him anything he wants.
Not if we finance Lionstar Motors.
JOHN: How long will it take you?
Car's not the problem.
It's building a whole new engine.
Can you have it ready for the race?
If we had the money, we might, but that seems
like an unlikely prospect.
What if Delos puts up the money?
Now why would you want to do a thing like that?
Let's just say we are interested in seeing Lionstar
Motors and the Lions succeed.
Dan, Corey's paralyzed, the engine blew up.
Isn't that enough?
But we don't think it's the engine that's at fault.
Well, that doesn't help Corey, and you've
had two heart bypasses.
The pressure you'd be under could kill you.
Honey, my work keeps me alive.
What do you think?
I don't know.
That's-- that's not much time.
Menotti?
I can't guarantee anything.
Well, let's go for it.
You supply the money, we'll supply the Lion.
All right.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[SCUFFLING]
Who's there?
[BANGING]
[SIRENS WAILING]
How is he?
I spoke with the doctor.
Lionstar will be all right, but it'll be a while
before he's up and around.
Dianna's in with him now.
What do I tell him?
First Corey, now the father.
John, Corey's accident happened
before you became involved.
Yeah, but I convinced Lionstar to rebuild the Lion.
But Dianna can't blame you for the fire.
Can't she?
If one of Quaid's robots started that fire,
then I'm responsible.
I used Lionstar to force Quaid's hand.
Does Corey know about it?
I told him.
He didn't take it very well.
He knows this means the end of Lionstar Motors.
Oh, no it doesn't.
That engine is going to be rebuilt
if I have to do it myself.
I'm going to go see him.
I'll wait for you.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
There's nothing I can do.
The first thing you can do is stop thinking about yourself.
That old man was willing to keep trying even
though it almost killed him.
He's a better man than I. You can tell him that.
No, you tell him you quit.
Not going to do that for you.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
DIANNA: What do you think?
ALDO: I think we should quit, that's what.
Dianna, I've known your father for 10 years.
There's nothing I wouldn't do for him,
but there's no way we're going to get
this car ready for the race.
No way.
All right, let's call it off.
Everybody, stop what you're doing.
Let's get everything crated.
Dianna, what do I tell the men when they finish packing?
I don't know.
Tell them to take a few days off.
I'll let them know.
Dianna.
Look, I've almost lost the two most
important people in the world.
I don't want to hear anymore about rebuilding a Lion.
Dianna, would you listen to me?
Look, what happened to Corey and the father was no accident.
What do you mean?
Look, the reason Delos offered your father the money
to continue with the Lion is because we
have to find a man named Quaid.
You used my father?
It's not what you're thinking.
This Quaid wants to take over the Lion.
He wants it so badly, he almost killed Corey and your father.
The only way we can stop him is to go on with the race.
He's done all the damage he can do me.
I couldn't care less about what Mr. Quaid wants.
What about what your father wants, or Corey?
How do you expect him to start fighting when you're quitting?
Aldo says there's too much damage.
We'll give you everything you want.
DIANNA: Even if I agreed, there's no way we
could go through with it now.
Why?
John, look around you.
The car is in pieces.
The crew is demoralized.
Look, we need someone with the experience
and know how who can drive the team and push them through,
and there isn't anybody who can do that.
COREY: Yes, there is.
This is the third time I have had
to alter my original plans because
of Moore's interference.
Number three wire.
The man is an absolute menace.
He must be dealt with once and for all.
Clipper.
Clipper.
What process of elimination would you recommend?
Well, I'm not sure that your conception
of dealing with a situation is exactly what I had in mind.
Tape 7, Roberta.
DOCTOR 1: Tape 7.
DOCTOR 2: I'm afraid I don't understand, Mr. Quaid.
Think what I could accomplish if Moore were on my side.
I think it's time perhaps that John Moore
and I had a confrontation.
Sounds like it's running a little rough.
How's that?
I don't know how you did it, but thanks.
He's almost back to his old self again.
[CLANKING]
Take it easy, Frank, will you?
This is not some--
some fender bender we're working out here.
Back to his old self all right.
[PHONE RINGING]
Yeah?
Who?
All right.
Hey Moore, telephone.
Thanks.
Moore here.
John here.
We're picking up a transmission.
It's being beamed right now in the plant area.
Mobile transmission is moving a few miles
east, southeast of the plant.
All right, stay with them.
We're on our way.
We got a track on Quaid.
Let's go.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
JOHN: What have you got, Joe?
Grid coordinates Alpha, Niner, 7, Victor.
Looks like the freeway near the Victory interchange.
The onramp should be about a quarter mile straight ahead.
John, a negative on that last fix.
The signal just cut out.
Or he's transmitting on another channel.
Try every frequency.
Checking out.
[WHISPERS]
Yes.
All right, we've got him again at George,
Niner, Victor, Niner--
stationary.
There it is.
All right, we're on him.
We should be there in a few minutes.
I don't like it.
There's only one way to find out.
If things get a little hairy, come fetch me.
Moore.
Quaid.
He must have triangulated our last transmission.
Oh, everyone gets a little sloppy now and then.
I don't suppose we could talk.
JOHN: No, let's not talk.
You're stalling, Quaid, but it won't do any good.
How can you be so sure?
We're both men of good minds.
One a little more devious than the other.
Devious?
Let me explain to you what devious means.
It merely implies change, a different course
away from the norm.
Listen to me, John, please.
Listen to me think.
Now what does your norm represent?
Famine, disease, pollution, war, prejudice?
Maybe, but I'll still take it over yours any day, Quaid.
QUAID: All right.
Delos One.
Pam, your target's gone blank.
Well, that's impossible.
I'm parked about 200 yards from the bus and tapping it.
Quaid can't be transmitting.
He's talking to John.
The transmission isn't coming from your location.
It's being sent to it.
Well, can you decode and unscramble the transmission
you're getting and patch me in?
JOE: We can try.
Yours isn't perfect.
Mine isn't either, yet, but imagine what
we could accomplish together.
Join me, John.
No, Quaid.
You're joining me.
You didn't really think more would come over to our side,
did you?
Well at least I tried.
I'm sure he'll get a bang out of this.
This is Quaid.
[INAUDIBLE]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
[HONKING]
Are you hurt?
Just my pride.
Didn't think you made it.
Hey, I didn't think you cared.
What is this?
A little smoke in your eyes.
All right.
See if Penny and Yarborough know of anybody, will you?
All right, just keep trying.
Thank you.
I'm calling all over the country to get another driver.
We've already got one.
Menotti?
He's an ace mechanic, but I don't think
he get it behind the wheel.
Besides, we need him in the pit crew.
I wasn't talking about Menotti.
I'm going to drive the Lion.
ALDO: Sounds pretty good.
Yeah, great.
What's bugging you?
I thought I was going to finally get a chance to drive,
not the boss's daughter.
She is the boss.
Well, I don't have to like it.
OK, boys, button her up.
Now let's walk the track again.
You learn every bump and turn and twist in the road
until you know it inside out.
Where do you think you're going?
I'm going to check out the new transmission.
As a mechanic, maybe.
As a driver, no.
I'll take her up.
You don't really think I can drive the race,
then why are we going through all the motions?
Because I know you're going to do it anyway.
I might as well coach you so you don't kill yourself
or anybody else.
How are you guys doing?
Hi.
You ever try and convince a liberated woman
there are some things that you just can't do?
Oh, yeah.
John gave up that war 10 minutes after we met.
[LAUGHING]
[TIRES SQUEALING]
What happened?
I-- I just tapped the brakes and they locked.
Oh, you should have checked the brakes
instead of the transmission.
I did last night.
[ENGINE REVVING]
Hey, Aldo, they're working fine now.
You figure that that--
this-- this Quaid robot is part of the Lionstar racing team.
Has to be.
Whoever it is had to have access to the plant
and to the car.
John, all my life, I bought anything you told me.
Anything.
But people I've worked with for years, years, to be a robot?
No.
Corey, I know it sounds crazy, but it
wouldn't make any difference if it was your own mother.
Quaid merely replaces a subject with an exact duplicate.
Corey, it could be Aldo, Menotti, anyone.
Even Dianna.
JOHN: Even Dianna.
Well, that's good news.
Send him our best.
I will.
Bye.
Dianna says her father's doing very well,
but she's having a hard time keeping
him chained to the hospital.
I'll bet.
Aldo, check the-- check the settings and the rear shocks
again.
Corey, it's past midnight.
We've been at it all day.
You're right.
Hey, guys, let's start again in the morning, all right?
OK, let's pack it in.
Early.
Ought to get a little rest yourself, huh?
I'm gonna-- I'm gonna crash on the couch in the office.
All right.
We'll be around.
Menotti--
Yeah, well you said--
I said we'd start again in the morning.
Yeah, but--
Will you get out of here?
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
Corey, what are you doing?
[BREATHING HEAVILY]
Testing my reflexes.
It's just a little rehabilitation program
I whipped up for myself.
Really?
Since when are trainers equipped with hand controls?
You're not thinking of adapting these controls to Lion,
are you?
I wouldn't worry about it if I was you, really.
Right now, I couldn't qualify for--
for the soapbox-- it's all right, I got it.
The soapbox derby.
Well, we did it with a half a day to spare.
We couldn't have done it without you, your help
with Corey and everything.
I want you to know I'm grateful.
Hey, the only thanks I want is that you go out there and do
a good job and stay safe.
Don't worry about that.
I am raring to go.
So is the Lion.
All nice and shiny, ready for her television debut.
Carlos I want to thank you personally for all the
help you've been.
Just doing my job.
See you on the track tomorrow.
COREY: You've got a sharp 45 left and then a fast 45 right.
Now stay low [INAUDIBLE].
Thatta girl.
Thatta girl.
Don't go too high or Johnson's going to eat you alive.
Now watch the drift.
All right, that's good.
Now, break, break, break, break, throttle.
Pam, you gotta do it fast, or you're going
to go flying off the north end.
OK.
All right, that's all right, sweetheart.
Now get ready for the Ses.
You're going to sharp turn it at 6.
All right, now a short straight.
Johnson's going to be coming behind you,
so you're going to have to floor it.
Good girl, now bring it on home to me, OK?
Well, what do you think?
What do I think?
We better have a little talk.
Good, really good.
I'm proud of you.
But I-- I--
I-- I don't know how else to say this,
but you're not good enough to go against Johnson.
Right, now we don't have anyone else who can drive.
Yes, we do.
Me.
Corey is going to drive the race.
[UPBEAT MUSIC]
Well now, I don't want to sound like a male chauvinist.
I mean, there are a lot of good lady drivers racing today.
But I'm kind of glad that they changed
their mind because, well, I'd--
truth is, I'd like to go up against Corey
Burns and that new engine of his instead of this woman.
It's too bad we can't bet on this race
since we know the outcome.
Roberta, when the race begins, I want thermal readouts
after every lap.
Certainly, Mr. Quaid.
[BEEPING]
Got something.
Yeah.
That's the mag points.
Hold up, one's darker than the other.
What does that mean?
JOE: Let's open it up and take a look.
Aldo?
We can't.
We don't have the time.
What do you mean?
We can't afford not to take the time.
There it is.
A low-level explosive with a radio-controlled detonator.
Set off from here, anywhere on that track,
it'll blow the engine sky high.
How'd it get there?
What do you mean, Aldo?
You're the chief mechanic around here, aren't you?
You were supposed to go over this thing
with a fine-tooth comb.
Yeah, I did.
So did Menotti.
Just a minute.
Are you accusing me?
Get him.
ALDO: You tell me?
QUAID: Push him.
You apologize, you hear?
Get out of here.
You're fired.
I quit.
Just a minute, Menotti, we got a race to run here.
You have.
Oh, that's perfect.
That's perfect.
What's going on?
Aldo and Menotti got into a hassle and Menotti quit.
And we found another bomb.
Great.
That's great!
The race starts in 5 minutes, you know!
We'll be ready.
What if there's another bomb hidden somewhere?
Corey could get killed.
I'm pulling us out of the race.
Now wait a minute.
You do that, and Lionstar Motors and everything
your father and Corey has been working for is all for nothing.
Now the rest of the car is clean.
I went over it myself, inside and out.
Come on, Aldo.
Let's get a new set of points in there
and let's get this thing rolling.
[KNOCKING]
JOHNSON: Yeah?
Johnson?
Yeah?
Carlos.
Carlos Menotti.
Hey, Menotti.
- You got a minute? - Sure.
Come in.
How do you feel?
- Ready. - OK.
OK, guys.
Lift him in.
OK.
Be careful now.
All right, pull the chair back.
Do you got it?
[INAUDIBLE]
OK, watch your head.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
All right.
Hey, good luck.
Come on, Corey!
[CHEERING]
[ENGINE REVVING]
[TIRES SQUEALING]
I want temperature readouts online for each lap, Roberta.
I understand, Mr. Quaid.
At what temperature do you wish the explosion?
At 215, dear.
This is strange.
What is it?
It's a paint chip.
Must have come off the hood of the car.
So?
Give me your lighter.
It's magnesium.
It ignites under intense heat.
Are you saying the line is painted with magnesium paint?
Exactly.
How do those engines get out there?
Normal engines run safely up to about 230.
After that, it moves into the critical stage.
With magnesium paint, all it would take is one spark.
JOE: Exactly.
Metal against metal.
So that robot's got to be in that other car.
That's right.
Fourth lap, Mr. Quaid.
Oil 120, coolant 185.
Oh, that's very good.
Sixth lap, Mr. Quaid.
Temperature on the Lion is 205 and rising.
The next lab should do it, Roberta.
Moore.
He's put it all together.
And he seems to have an uncanny knack for doing that.
Well, I will not let him do it this time.
This is Quaid.
Make your move now.
Hit Moore into Lion.
Hit him!
[EXPLOSION]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
The introduction of a new Gasohol oil haul engine
coupled with a driving of three-time
NASCAR champion Corey Burns.
Took the number one spot at the Daytona 500
and held it all the way for a stunning victory.
All right.
[BUZZER]
Oppenheimer.
He's right here.
Corey.
Hi, Corey.
When?
All right, don't do anything till I get there.
This is John Moore I need a chopper ready in five minutes.
[INAUDIBLE]?
Yeah.
We've got to get to Vegas in 40 minutes.
You're the made of honor, I'm the best man, and Joe,
you're the flower girl.
[LAUGHS]
