- St. Marys, georgia, is
located on the st. Marys river.

- It's very coastal,
and it centers

On fishing and shrimp boats.

It's just
a beautiful little town.

[dramatic music]

[radio chatter]

- But there's crime
in st. Marys

Like there's crime in any town.

- Camden county 911.
Where is your emergency?

- All I could see was this
blazing inferno in the river.

♪ ♪

My stomach just
sunk to the floor.

- Somebody possibly
poured gasoline on that boat.

- Several pieces
of human skeletal remains

Were recovered.

- We don't know,
is it one body?

Is it two bodies?
Is it twelve?

♪ ♪

- The whole boating community
was in shock.

- He'd just turn into an evil,
evil, hateful person.

- He did pull out a pistol

And raised and pointed that
said pistol at law enforcement.

- I can just feel
my heart beat.

Something's about to happen.

[gunshots]

[seabirds squalling]

[tense twangy music]

- The 130-mile st. Marys river
is a blackwater river,

Which is a slow-moving channel

Flowing through
forested swamps and wetlands.

Located in southeast georgia,

It serves as the border
between georgia and florida,

And the surrounding areas have
both southern charm

And easy coastal living.

In 2012, however,
the small, quaint town

Was shocked by a series
of tragic events.

♪ ♪

[phone line trills]

- Around 3:00 in the morning,

The st. Marys police department
dispatch received a 911 call.

There was believed to be
some screaming

Heard over that line.

[muffled screaming continues]

- It's really haunting.

It begins with some moaning,
and then there's

Some indistinguishable
kind of sounds.

[indistinct moaning]

- And then that's--that's it.
It's over.

There's no more sound
after that.

- I was
the on-call investigator.

[siren wails]

The only information known
was that the phone number

That was related to an address
in the city of st. Marys

At a boatyard
off of new point peter road.

And I was driving there
to where the marina is.

I was just thinking,
is there somebody

Hurt somewhere
that we need to get to?

And as I come to the middle
of the causeway,

All I could see was this
blazing inferno in the river.

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

And, like, my stomach just
sunk to the floor.

Because your first interest
is preserving life.

[radio chatter]

The fire department's
on scene.

We can't even get near it
because of the heat

Emanating off of this vessel
anchored out in the water.

You can even feel the heat
just standing on the shoreline.

You can't even get close
without risking

Getting hurt yourself.

And so all you can do is just
let the fire burn down.

And then once it gets
small enough,

You can start pulling it in.

But at that point, if there's
a person on that boat,

They're not a person anymore.

♪ ♪

- A fire caused
by flammable liquids,

Such as gasoline, oil,
or grease,

Cannot be extinguished
with water.

In fact, water can
spread the liquids,

Making a fire much, much worse.

Without knowledge
of how the blaze started,

Firefighters absolutely have
no choice

But to wait for the flames
on the trawler to burn out.

- My brain's already
in overdrive.

And I'm just trying
to wrap my head around,

Okay, is this
an accidental fire?

Is this an intentional fire?

It was still
really dark outside.

An agent from dnr,

The department
of natural resources,

Showed up with a boat.

He let me and one of the
officers get onto his boat,

And he took us as close
to the boat that was on fire

As he could.

I was able to get
my camera lens in close enough

That I was able to capture
the "premium time" name

On this great harbour trawler
boat that was burning.

- The "premium time" is
a great harbour 37-foot

Liveaboard
full displacement trawler.

While historically trawlers
were known as fishing vessels,

Today many,
like the "premium time,"

Are designed as houseboats

With comfortable living
and entertaining spaces

And are outfitted
for long-range cruising.

If someone was living
on this vessel,

It's essentially like
a house fire on the water,

And there's the possibility
of multiple victims on board.

- The investigators called
the office

Of great harbour trawlers,

Because that was
the manufacturer,

To find out who was
in possession of the boat.

That was the starting point
for that investigation.

- Just like the vin on a car,
every boat has

What's called a hin,
or hull identification number.

This number is assigned to
the vessel's registered owner.

- Our investigators started
giving me information

About "premium time" and
confirming the owner for me,

Which was karen barnes.

- Police are trying
to reach karen,

Because if she's on that boat,
this is a nightmare.

But they couldn't
get in contact with her.

- This took several hours,

And the boat's just
becoming nothing

As it's--as time passes.

[tense music]

♪ ♪

People started waking up,
those who lived in the marina.

There's buzzing going around,

And there's people saying,
oh, I know karen.

But nobody had seen karen.

Nobody had heard from her
since the previous day.

And then some of the residents
that were in the area

Who woke up
from all of the commotion,

They're like,
well, this guy named larry ford

Was living on the boat
next to hers.

Larry's a good friend
of karen's.

Larry would often
go visit karen.

So while we were out there
on the water in dnr's boat,

He took us over to larry's
vessel in the spirit

Of a wellness check
to make sure, is larry okay?

And could she have been
on his boat that night?

[knocking on door]

So we boarded larry's boat,
and we're knocking,

"karen! Larry!"
and you know,

Hoping somebody would
open the door.

And we weren't getting
a response.

♪ ♪

And so I'm looking
at this boat, "premium time,"

From larry's boat.

His boat is next to hers,
and it's still burning.

And I'm thinking,
minute by minute,

Second by second,
the evidence is burning,

And there might have been
people on board.

[radio chatter]

Around 6:20 in the morning,
the fire had diminished enough

That fire personnel could
get closer to it,

Cut the anchor,
and guide it towards the dock.

The fire wasn't
fully extinguished

Until about 12:15
that afternoon,

Quite a long time.

I remember,
we went down into the boat,

And it's just
this charred mess.

At that point, we could really
get into the investigation

And see what evidence is there;

What is left for us
to collect here?

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- The investigation was led

By the st. Marys
police department,

But it also involved the
georgia bureau of investigation

And the camden county
sheriff's office.

- When the gbi was requested to
help with this investigation,

There was virtually nothing
left of the boat.

In this case, you have to worry
about the challenges

Of solving a case
that involved fire.

And is the evidence washed
into the ocean?

And is it gone?

- And we're just starting
to sift through

And just see
what can be recovered.

We're looking,
and my thought is,

I hope we find nothing,
but I hope we find everything.

And then we start finding

Several pieces
of human skeletal remains.

[dramatic music]

- Was it an accidental fire
on the boat?

We don't know, is it one body?

Is it two bodies?
Is it twelve?

♪ ♪

- My gut's sinking.

If larry's not on his boat,

And karen's not with larry
on larry's boat,

Where are karen and larry?

♪ ♪

- We don't know
who it might be,

How many people it might be.

- You can't light these boats
on fire very easily.

There's only one way
that it could happen.

It's accelerants.

- This had to be intentional,

And it had to be methodical.

I'm literally, like,
boots on the ground,

Going through the woods

Like a predator going after
its prey.

♪ ♪

[tense music]

[radio chatter]

- 13 hours after
the "premium time" went ablaze

On the st. Marys river,

Investigators discover
human bone fragments

Within the smoldering ashes.

With karen barnes' whereabouts
still unknown,

Authorities fear she could be
a victim of the fire.

- We don't know

Who it might be,
how many people it might be.

So those pieces
that were found,

They were collected, and
those remains were transported

To the medical examiner's
office in savannah, georgia.

[intriguing music]

Through the autopsy,
even in a fire case,

If a body is not able
to be identified

Through physical means,

You can use dna examinations
of bone marrow

To possibly identify
the remains.

♪ ♪

Through dna testing,

The remains were identified
as karen barnes.

- It's very tragic,
and you have to tell families.

This is the sort
of notification

That never gets easier.

[somber music]

- Once I got the call,
I broke down.

Kind of heart-wrenching.

Lost my whole world.

♪ ♪

- The whole boating community
was in shock,

And our group
of great harbour owners,

We were just all like,
what could have happened?

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- You want to treat everything
serious like a homicide

To begin with, but you have to
also consider other factors--

Possible murder, arson,
an accidental fire.

So now we needed
some background information

On karen.

[somber music]

- Karen is my sister.

She's the oldest,

Then we have two brothers
in between us, and then me.

♪ ♪

Karen lived in myrtle beach,
and then she moved down here,

And I got her a job
as an event planner.

She loved the beach.

She loved to go
looking for shells,

Kayaking, swimming.

She loved all of it.

♪ ♪

- I first met karen
through great harbour boats.

We had matching boats.

She was just warm
right off the bat.

- Karen lived on the boat.

Being on a boat on the water
really made her tick.

- Karen was such
a beautiful, beautiful person,

Inside and out.

She was just so bubbly,

This bouncy, bubbly--
full of personality.

She was just
a really good person.

A great loss.

[seabirds squalling]

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- An investigation
on the water

Is much more complicated
than investigation on land.

On land,
everything is pretty much

Contained right in one spot.

On the water, the evidence can
be lost in the water itself.

It makes it
that much more difficult.

- While we were sifting through
and trying to find

The pieces that we needed
to tell the story,

Some shell casings
from a firearm were recovered.

♪ ♪

- There were shell casings,
but there was

No evidence
of a handgun on board.

The discovery of shell casings
amidst the ashes

Suggested it was more
than just a fire.

- Karen did have a gun

So that she felt
she could protect herself.

- Maybe the gun could have
been on larry's boat.

But where's larry?

He's not out here
looking for karen.

He's not on the dock.
He's not showing himself.

There are
so many questions, like,

Was larry with karen

On the "premium time"?

- Investigators talked
to some other

Great harbour trawler owners
who lived at the marina.

They said larry ford
apparently is a boat guy,

That he had been
a boat technician

For a long time
in that south georgia area,

Fixing boats and installing
equipment on boats.

- I learned that at one point,

"premium time" was docked
in jekyll island.

She had met larry ford
in jekyll,

And they became friends there.

When karen left jekyll
and came down to st. Marys,

Larry actually moved
his boat as well.

- Larry was just the nicest
man, just real laid-back.

He would help karen,
and she would take him food.

He just kind of was there
and would help anybody

With whatever they need done.

- Karen's loved ones said
that larry, he was a good guy.

But maybe something was
going on in their lives

And their relationship
that we don't know about.

[dramatic music]

But then I received
a phone call.

And we were able to confirm
through the medical examiner

That there were two bodies
that were recovered

From "premium time,"

And we still hadn't heard
from larry ford.

So I'm automatically thinking,
it could be larry's remains.

♪ ♪

- Through familial dna,

Which essentially means
comparing the tissue samples

That they have of the victims
to family members,

The other remains were
identified as larry ford.

Not only did we have one body.

Now we had two.

So that complicates
the investigation.

- It looked like
the individuals

Whose bodies were found inside
had been shot,

And the boat had been torched
to cover up the crime.

- Or could it have been
murder-suicide?

- Was it a homicide?

A target towards karen barnes?

♪ ♪

Or was it a target
towards larry ford?

♪ ♪

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- Authorities learn
that the human remains

Recovered from
the "premium time" do, in fact,

Belong to karen barnes
and her friend, larry ford.

With the fire having destroyed
all of the forensic evidence

Like fingerprints and dna,

Detectives cannot determine
if another person was involved

Or if this was
a murder-suicide.

So the next step
in their investigation

Is to uncover as much
as they can about the victims.

[seabirds squalling]

- Those who lived
in the marina said that larry,

He was a nice friend,
and he could tell

That karen was concerned

About this husband that
she just had divorced from.

♪ ♪

Five months prior,
in April of 2012,

Karen filed for divorce
from david trauger.

But I wasn't really sure,
like, what had happened

To deteriorate
this relationship.

I need to get
some background information.

Could he be involved?

There were so many
unanswered questions,

And I needed answers.

[soft music]

- Karen barnes
and david trauger met in 2009

While she was working
as an events coordinator

At a restaurant in georgia.

♪ ♪

David trauger,

He had an insurance company
in pennsylvania.

He was financially well-off.

David trauger, I believe,
acquired "premium time"

In 2006.

You have to have
pretty solid financial footing

To be able to afford
"premium time."

- Liveaboards can range
in price quite a bit.

But for the "premium time"

That had a custom interior
and the addition of a tender,

The ticket price was $560,000.

- I think karen saw in david
a change for a new future,

You know, the beach.

David pretty much told her,
you won't have to work.

Because she pretty much
gave up everything

To marry him and move down
to jekyll island on the boat.

♪ ♪

They got married, I think,
three months from meeting,

On "premium time."

- Karen was good to david.

She took good care of david.

[indistinct chatter]

But david was an alcoholic.

Karen did say she would never
have gotten involved with him

If she knew
he was an alcoholic.

- When david drank,
he just turned

Into an evil, evil,
hateful person.

- I learned from loved ones,

They had some prior awareness
of complaints

Of domestic issues
between karen barnes

And her ex-husband,
david trauger.

That's never a positive thing.

- At one time, karen told me
they were down in the bahamas.

He had thought somebody was
flirting with her.

He threw her wedding ring
into the water.

He ended up twisting her arm,

Where she had to go
get it in a cast.

[tense music]

When she--you know, when
she told me about the abuse,

I really wanted her
to leave him.

But she actually stayed
with him for years.

♪ ♪

- In 2012, karen and david got
into an argument in the car.

And he tried to run the car
off the road.

At that point,
karen came to our firm

To file a divorce
against her husband,

David trauger.

She had been
in this abusive marriage

With david for several years,
and she wanted out.

At that point,
she and david had agreed

On how to split their assets.

They agreed that he would
maintain the business,

Two houses,
and other property.

Karen would receive alimony
and "premium time."

Karen loved living
aboard a boat.

And she loved the lifestyle
that came with it.

So after the divorce,
karen was still living

On "premium time"
on jekyll island.

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- We had received a call
at the fire station

From a gentleman
by the name of ken fickett,

The owner
of great harbour trawlers.

He was trying to get in touch
with law enforcement

Because he had information.

♪ ♪

He told me that
he built "premium time"

Specifically
for david trauger.

Ken was giving me
some background

Of the "premium time"
and helping me understand

This boat.

- They're very,
very safely built boats

With significant
electrical systems.

There's all kinds of things
that we do

In the manufacturing process

That would preclude the boat
from catching on fire.

- According to david's, like,
wants and specifications,

Ken added this thing called
a fireboy suppressor

To the boat.

- Fire suppression systems
are automatically activated

By excessive heat or smoke

To stop engine room fires
before they spread,

Which means
it's highly unlikely

The fire on the "premium time"
was accidental.

- Ken thought
the burn was suspicious,

That this boat shouldn't have
burned down.

- We refuse to put propane
on the boats

Because it's such
a fire hazard.

And we build everything
from fiberglass.

- Fiberglass doesn't
burn easily.

You could put a blowtorch
on it,

And it won't catch fire.

- I said, there's only one way
that it could have happened.

It's accelerants.

- If you pour
enough gasoline on it,

You can get it to burn,
and once it starts burning,

It doesn't stop.

[dramatic music]

- There's no way that this is
just, like, an arbitrary fire.

This had to be intentional,

And it had to be methodical.

♪ ♪

- And that's when they realized
that it had to be arson.

And then someone became
a suspect almost immediately.

- I told the detective,

David trauger was
a very tempestuous guy.

He had a temper
that was pretty dramatic.

♪ ♪

I thought, you know,
he was enough of a jerk

That depriving karen
of that boat by burning it

Would be something
that he could come up with.

As I recall, my quote was,

"that son of a bitch,
he burned the boat."

♪ ♪

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- After authorities determine
that the fire

On the "premium time"
was indeed arson,

They suspect that
karen barnes' ex-husband,

David trauger,
may have been involved.

[dramatic music]

- St. Marys police department

And the georgia bureau
of investigation

Were working in tandem
in order to find david trauger.

- I need to find david
to find out what's going on.

[siren wailing]

Where is david trauger?

♪ ♪

- It was learned
that after the divorce,

There were police reports made

Where david trauger
was stalking karen barnes.

♪ ♪

- In June 2012, david appeared
on the boat on jekyll island.

He tried to use his key
to get in the back door.

Karen had changed the locks
at that point.

And so she called 911.

[radio chatter]

- He was greeted
by a police officer,

And he was asked
to leave the area,

That it was karen's boat now,

And that she didn't
want him there.

♪ ♪

Not long after that,
he's starting to follow her,

Starting to look for her.

He's emailing karen
obsessively.

I think this was
the turning point

For david's life,
where this boat was--

Was his retirement plan.

This boat was--
was something he loved.

And I think it sets in
his mind this downward spiral,

And he really wanted
his boat back.

At the time larry
and karen became friends

On jekyll island, karen had
some safety concerns,

So larry had actually
got karen a gun

For her protection.

- Eventually,
they made the decision

To try to get away
from jekyll island marina

Because they didn't want
to be found by david.

- Karen and larry left jekyll,

Came down to st. Marys.

Larry actually stayed docked
near her,

And I think it gave her
a sense of comfort,

Having somebody there
who looked out for her.

- They selected, you know,
the waters out front

Of st. Marys
marine services boatyard

Because it was
a good place to hide.

But david somehow manages to--

To find them.

And it could have
been as simple

As him visiting the boatyard

And just seeing "premium time"
anchored out front.

Nobody actually knows
how he figured out

Where they were, but he did.

- Unfortunately,
the stalking still ensued,

And at that point,
escalated even further.

♪ ♪

- David knew this boat
in and out,

So he could still maneuver
and get on the boat.

And at one time,
david had broke into the boat

And messed with a lot of stuff
on the boat.

Larry found that
all the steering

Had been tampered with,

So there was no steering
on the boat.

- Karen was sure that
david had disabled the boat

In some manner,
because this was a boat

In pristine condition.

Also, through
the investigation I learned

That there was an incident
at a grocery store.

And it turns out that she had
spotted david in the store,

And he had been stalking her.

♪ ♪

- Because karen didn't
feel safe, she filed

A petition for family violence
and stalking order.

She was asking the court
for an order

To keep david away.

We identified a few places

Where we thought
david was staying,

But the sheriff never
found him,

So david was never served
with a petition.

[insects chirring]

- Karen had actually been
coming and staying with me

So she could feel safe.

But she actually left my house
the 12th, that evening,

Because she had to go get
bags of her clothes.

And I just knew--
just had a feeling

Something was gonna happen.

And I was begging her,
please stay with me.

We gave, like,
the longest, biggest hug.

And...Then she left.

[dramatic music]

- David trauger
quickly became a suspect

Due to the stalking reports

And the contentious nature
of their relationship.

♪ ♪

- And so now we feel confident,
david's our guy.

This was arson and murder.

As far as we know,
he's armed, unstable.

Is he gonna kill somebody else?

We really need
to make the citizens aware.

We have what we believe
is a threat to our community.

We need to stop david trauger.

♪ ♪

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- David trauger, the prime
suspect in the shooting deaths

Of karen barnes
and larry ford,

Is considered armed
and extremely dangerous.

So authorities form
a special task force

In hopes of catching him
before anyone else gets hurt.

♪ ♪

- Once david trauger
has been identified

As the prime suspect,
he's in the media.

He's been pictured.

And almost everyone
in the local area knows

What the guy looks like
and why he's wanted.

- This was a case that we
needed that teamwork approach.

We had, at the time,

The camden county
sheriff's office,

The kingsland
police department.

We had the georgia bureau
of investigation

And the coast guard.

So many people showed up
to help.

This is a manhunt for david.

We had issued the bolo for
anybody to be on the lookout

For any signs of david.

♪ ♪

[radio chatter]

- It was all over the news.
They were trying to find him.

They weren't sure where he was.

They didn't know if he was,
you know, in st. Marys, jekyll.

They didn't have any idea
where he was.

♪ ♪

- The police were searching
for david,

But he was evading them.

- They can't find david.

Is david gonna come to our boat

And say, "hide me,"
or would he come kill us too

Because we were friends
with her?

[dramatic music]

We didn't know what to do.
David was crazy.

♪ ♪

I--I have no idea what
he could have been thinking.

But he was gonna take care
of things his way.

♪ ♪

- So we're driving
around kingsland.

Investigators run across
a vehicle at a gas station

That seemed to match the
lookout that we had issued.

Sure enough,
it matched the vehicle

That we were looking for.

The discovery of this truck
was very interesting.

Why is his truck here?

Then we decided to just take
a look, the surrounding area.

Could he be on foot?
Could he be in the store?

Could he be nearby?

There was actually a path
behind the gas station.

So the officers
and one of the investigators

From st. Marys went
to check out the path.

Not too far into the path,
lo and behold,

There is a holster
covered in blood.

But the gun is missing.

There's a few dollar bills
bloodied on the ground.

There's a wallet,
and then there's an id card.

And the id card belongs
to david trauger.

♪ ♪

When we find david's
belongings in the woods,

Everything shifts.

I'm literally, like,
boots on the ground,

Going through the woods.

[suspenseful music]

I am hunting david

Like a predator
going after its prey.

Is he gonna stay shallow
in the woods?

What path is he gonna take?

♪ ♪

And we walked the woods,

Just searching,
searching, searching,

Everywhere we could think
that david might go.

Where would
a 67, 68-year-old man go?

Would he get tired?
Where might he rest?

And we searched
the first night.

The next day starts,
we search again.

And there's officers
searching everywhere.

There's just people
out helping.

And then the phone calls start
coming in from the citizens.

[phone rings]

- Police get a call
from a witness

Who says he's seen
david trauger

Near the apartment complex
where he was living.

[phone rings]

- "hey, there's a guy here.

"looks like the guy
on the news.

He's an older gentleman."

We have our walkie-talkies

And we're deep
in the middle of the woods,

As far away from our cars
as possible.

And we're running back,
racing to get to our cars.

♪ ♪

And by the time
we get back to our car

And we get into the area,

The other law enforcement
officers already have

A pretty decent perimeter set.

We were all holding
our position at the perimeter.

♪ ♪

- David trauger comes out
of the apartment building.

- When you box an animal
into a corner,

What are they gonna do?

I can just feel my heart beat.

Something's about to happen.

♪ ♪

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- After an exhaustive search,
authorities have located

Armed murder suspect
david trauger

And have him surrounded
at a local apartment complex.

[dramatic music]

- We're holding our position
at the perimeter.

And you just have
that sense of,

Something's gonna happen,
and your heart's beating fast.

♪ ♪

- David trauger comes out
of the apartment building.

♪ ♪

- He did pull out a pistol

And raised and pointed
that pistol at law enforcement.

- You heard one gunshot...
[gunshot]

Followed by a brief pause.

- David fired first.

That's all
the georgia police needed

To unload on him.

[gunfire]

David was hit several times

And killed on the spot.

For good measure,
they handcuffed him.

- That's it.

Manhunt's over.

If david wants to engage
in suicide by cop or he wants

To do something reckless,
that's david's choice.

I just want all
the police officers to go home.

[soft dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- I found out
that david had been

In a shoot-out
with the police.

My uncle called me and said,
they got him.

[sighs]

Kind of disappointed

That he died that way,

Because you can't get to tell
him what he's done to you,

To tell him
his victim impact statement.

- When we heard
that it was suicide by cop,

It was such a relief to us.

- During the course
of the day,

As everything was unfolding,

I was able to inventory
the contents

Found in david's truck.

And I recovered, like,
suicide notes inside of them.

There was documentation that
he purchased a small boat,

As well as letters for where
he wanted property to go.

- Police found evidence
that indicated

That he was contemplating
a suicide by cop scenario.

- I think david was losing
control of his pride and joy,

Which was the "premium time,"

Along with his wife.

- I think this is where
he starts to develop this plan

Of her end-of-life plan
and his end-of-life plan.

[tense music]

The next day,
I received a call

That david's small boat
is actually found

In somebody else's backyard
a little ways down the river,

And that it had been
spray-painted black,

And that there were
spray-painted black gas cans

And cinder blocks
sitting inside of it.

♪ ♪

I think it shows
his efficiency as a navigator

And his willingness
to go to great lengths

To commit terrible things
to karen.

We weren't there,
and now we can't ask david,

We can't ask karen,
and we can't ask larry.

But when I look back to the
morning of August 13, 2012,

You can't help
but try to piece together

What you think really happened.

♪ ♪

- Investigators believe david
put his johnboat in the water.

A johnboat is a swamp boat

In florida and georgia
and other parts of the south.

He put cinder blocks
in the front of the boat,

And this is believed to have
been a way of keeping the boat

From slapping as it was
pushed through the water,

And thus
drawing attention to it.

- Swamp boats are
flat-bottomed watercraft

That are used to navigate
marshy or shallow waters.

As they move, water hits

They've got the doors locked,

But he manages
to get in anyway.

When he gets in, they wake up.

They're at gunpoint.

They're shot.

David spreads
the gasoline around...

Lights it on fire.

- At some point,
karen has her phone,

And she calls 911.

I think that phone call
was her last hope,

And we just couldn't
get there fast enough.

That's a very torturous death.

[somber music]

- This tragic case
was ultimately solved

With the assistance
of many heroic people.

The boat manufacturer armed
detectives with details that

Helped classify the crime as
a double homicide and arson,

And good old-fashioned
police work quickly identified

David trauger
as the likely perp.

Amazingly,
interagency coordination

And an immediate response
by the task force

Kicked off a manhunt
that caught up

To the violent killer
in just two days.

- Larry ford is the most
innocent in all of this.

He was really just trying
to be a gentleman,

And he was able to help.

- Anybody would have
helped karen,

And he was glad for
the opportunity to help her.

They didn't deserve to die.

- What I want to say is,

For victims to trust
their instincts,

And to know that
a piece of paper,

An order for protection,
is not going to protect you.

I wish there was more
that could be done

For victims of stalking,

Especially in cases
like karen's.

- A restraining order
isn't gonna do anything.

This all should have
been prevented,

If they'd have just found him

When all the stalking
and everything was going on

And put him in jail.

We lost
a really wonderful person.
