- When I think of newport beach,

I think of the ultimate kinda california active lifestyle.

- It's paradise.

There's beautiful beaches all over the place.

The most prevalent crimes down here are property crimes,

Some boat accidents related to alcohol.

Homicides are rare.

- A rope was attached to the back of the speedboat.

And on the other end of the rope was a man.

- He was yelling, "help me. My wife is missing."

- I had to hope that they were gonna find her.

- But things weren't addin' up.

- And we said, "why didn't you tell us this initially?"

- We didn't divulge how much blood we did find on the boat.

- He goes, "you seem like you're afraid of me."

I go, "I'm terrified of you."

- It's like, how can I act normal?

I'm sitting across from a killer.

[dramatic music]

[soft eerie music]

♪ ♪

- 50 miles south of the glitz and glamour of hollywood

Is the jewel of southern california's coast,

Newport beach.

It's home to upscale estates with impressive ocean views,

Private yachts, and the prime pacific waves

Of any surfer's dreams.

But on July 6, 1997,

A carefree day on the water turns into tragedy.

[tense music]

- A gentleman named gary greene was piloting

His boat called the "greene machine,"

And he was traveling from newport beach to catalina.

- The "greene machine" happens upon this boat doing donuts out

In the middle of the ocean.

- The husband was crying for help,

And he was on a boogie board.

- The man was screaming that his wife is missing.

So gary greene gave him a life jacket to make sure

That he wasn't gonna drown.

- But the boat's still doing circles out there in the water,

And they couldn't control the boat.

- This 18-foot speedboat, the "striper 2000,"

Has a powerful engine for propulsion,

But it's simple to operate

For even the most inexperienced boater.

Right now the vessel is demonstrating a phenomenon

Called the circle of death, which is what happens

If an operator releases the steering wheel

While the propeller is still turning.

The force of the rotating blades

Creates torque, which causes the boat to swerve sharply

To the left and get stuck moving in a continuous circle.

[siren wails]

- The coast guard, they came out to the scene,

And they ended up having a deputy get on the boat

And stop it from circling.

- And then they picked the subject out of the water

And brought him into the harbor.

He was cold, and he was frantic.

And he was yelling about his wife, and he was crying.

The coast guard determined

That the man in the water was eric bechler,

And the person driving the boat

Before she went overboard was his wife, pegye bechler.

- Authorities tow the speedboat

Back to the harbor, and the coast guard

Immediately launches a search and rescue for pegye bechler.

At this point, pegye's been in the water

For less than two hours, which means it's very possible

She'll be found alive if they can locate her quickly.

At the same time, coast guard investigators

Talk to eric to get details of exactly what happened

And where to help pinpoint her likely location.

- Eric was distraught and visibly shaken,

And he was crying.

And he said they were celebrating

Their fifth wedding anniversary by taking a pleasure cruise

On a rental boat in newport harbor,

But they went out into the high seas in the channel

Between newport beach and catalina island

To be a little more adventurous.

- For a couple who aren't boaters to rent a speedboat

And go out into the open sea is a little ambitious.

His wife was driving the boat and pulling him from behind.

And eric said a rogue wave

Knocked him off his boogie board.

- One thing about eric's story that raised the curiosity

Of investigators is that this wave came

And knocked me off my boogie board.

Well, the conditions that day were very calm.

There were swells of 1 to 2 feet and very light wind.

- The coast guard had a conversation

With eric about that.

He just stuck to his story about this rogue wave

That washed over the boat.

- Well, there's no record of rogue waves that day.

It's possible they went undetected.

The ocean is an unpredictable place.

Even on a calm day, many factors--

Wind, currents, tides-- can join forces

And create an unexpected and sometimes deadly wave.

- This was being investigated as an accident,

And that's purely all it was, was an accident,

Based on two people with one witness.

So after talking to eric, he goes back to his house

To be with his kids,

But eric wanted us to search exhaustively for pegye.

- I actually got a phone call from a friend of mine

About pegye being missing.

[somber music]

Later when I spoke to eric,

He was absolutely hysterical,

I couldn't understand him.

He was sobbing.

He just kept saying,

"she's missing. She wasn't there."

They were gonna leave the kids behind with the nanny

To celebrate their anniversary.

I was shocked at what had happened,

Especially because pegye was a very good swimmer.

♪ ♪

Pegye was one of the happiest,

Most gregarious people I had ever met.

Very endearing immediately.

When I met pegye, she was in her 20s.

Pegye happened to live in the same apartment complex.

She was working for a physical therapy company

At that point in time.

Very hardworking.

Eventually she broke off and started her own business.

One day pegye called me

And said, "hey, what are you up to?"

And I said, "well, I'ma go down to the beach

And watch my husband, dave, play volleyball."

I said, "do you wanna come?"

She said, "I'll be there in ten minutes."

As soon as she got there, she's like, "who's that guy?"

I said, "that's eric."

He played a lot of volleyball with dave.

Eric was a very good-looking guy,

Very, very fit.

In between some of the matches,

Eric would come over, and we introduced them.

And eric was just as interested in pegye.

Their relationship, the way that it blossomed,

Centered around physical fitness.

They ran together. They biked together.

Eric became a part of pegye's life very quickly.

He moved in.

He started to work for pegye's business.

Pegye handled all the physical therapy stuff

And eric handled all the business side.

Within maybe a year, pegye and eric got married

On the beach in newport.

[birds calling]

Eventually, they had three children.

Pegye loved him, and they had the perfect, most amazing life

With not a care in the world.

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- As the hours pass and night approaches,

Search teams continue to comb the waters for pegye.

But with each passing minute,

It becomes increasingly difficult

To tread water in the open sea.

- Further out past the mouth of the harbor,

If she got swept in the shipping current,

Pegye could have ended up

Up in santa barbara or down in mexico.

- The navy has a deep-sea submersible they brought in,

So they continued looking for her.

- Pegye was one of the most extraordinary athletes

I had ever met,

And her swimming abilities were off the charts.

And so I had to hope that

Pegye was keeping herself afloat somewhere.

And I certainly couldn't comprehend the loss of her.

She will show up.

- Please pray for pegye.

- The coast guard was trying to determine

What exactly happened out there.

- She claimed that pegye

Fabricated her own disappearance.

- Maybe she panicked.

I might go to jail.

I'm outta here.

- And I said, "you can trash me all you want,

I'm telling the truth. I'm not lying."

- Now we're off to the races.

[unsettling music]

- It's day two of the search

For missing boater pegye bechler.

With overnight efforts unsuccessful,

Morning brings the realization

That the chances of finding her alive are nearly impossible.

So the coast guard makes the difficult decision

To call off the search.

- Eric was sobbing, absolutely hysterical.

Pegye's gone.

[somber music]

She was such a ray of sunshine.

And as a mom, the first thing you think about is your kids.

And now the children are without their mother,

And their lives will never be the same.

- Now the coast guard focuses on determining

Exactly what happened with the boat itself.

- The coast guard wanted to see if there was

Something mechanically wrong with the boat.

And they did some sea trials in the boat

Just to see if it was seaworthy or if there was

Any kind of issue that may have caused this accident

Other than any kind of weather or wave.

And they tried to duplicate the things

That eric was saying had happened with the boat.

Right away, the coast guard determined

The boat was mechanically sound.

- According to eric,

Pegye was driving the boat, sitting up on the seat back.

The coast guard determined that whichever way the boat went,

The person driving the boat fell inside the boat,

Not outside the boat.

- There was another thing that was weird.

The coast guard said there was a pair of sunglasses

Up on top of the front of the boat

Right by the steering wheel.

If she got swept off the boat,

Why would those glasses be intact right there?

It didn't make sense.

- You would think there would be stuff strewn all over,

But there wasn't any of that.

Everything wasn't adding up.

I think the coast guard had suspicions that this

Was way beyond an accident.

[tense music]

- They realized that they needed to contact

The sheriff's department

And have our homicide division come

And look at it and see what we thought about it.

That's always a red flag, when a spouse is missing.

♪ ♪

We went out to interview eric bechler.

He's very emotional and distraught.

We asked eric what was happening that day.

And he said that he had arranged for a surprise.

It was a combination birthday and anniversary present

For his wife.

And he just told her, "pack your stuff up;

We're heading to the beach."

And he surprised her. He had rented a boat.

- They picnicked on the boat, had sex on the boat.

He said they started to kneeboard

At the mouth of the harbor.

A wave came over.

And when he said he came up,

She was no longer at the wheel of the boat.

- Eric doesn't provide any new information

About what happened out on the water.

So homicide investigators turned their attention

To pegye's personal life.

- So when we got into an initial investigation,

You talk to all the friends and family of the people involved

And see if there's any kind of issues in the marriage

That maybe would indicate this isn't an accident.

So we spoke to her good friends

And one friend in particular, glenda.

- I remember speaking with some of the investigators.

And I said, "well, I don't think there is any foul play

"because after pegye went missing,

Eric was so distraught."

- We also talked to a good friend of eric bechler.

His name was kobi laker.

And he said that pegye and eric had a great marriage,

And he was shocked about what had happened.

We talked to pegye's mom,

And she said that they all seemed happy.

- But then eric's mother, linda, told investigators

That pegye confided in her that

They were having financial issues

And had sold pegye's company.

- A few months before pegye went missing,

Pegye told me that when they sold the business,

They were able to work out an agreement

To stay on for a period of time.

And they were both getting a salary,

But as things moved on, I think that the company

That bought them started seeing some things

That didn't add up to them.

- There was some issues about fraudulent medicare

And medicaid billing that was going on with the business.

- When talking to eric's mother,

Linda bechler claimed that pegye fabricated

Her own disappearance to avoid fraud charges

And owing a bunch in federal government taxes.

- If you went the direction that linda wanted to go,

Pegye jumped overboard, swam to shore,

Is living in, like, morocco, and she's gonna live there

Until the statute of limitations runs out

On the medicare charges with the feds.

- Maybe she panicked. Wait a minute here.

My once perfect life is starting to crumble.

I might go to jail.

I'm outta here.

- But according to her friends,

Pegye would fight any charges she had.

And everyone except eric's mom, linda bechler,

Said she would not stage her disappearance

And abandon her children.

So we dismissed that.

♪ ♪

At that point, we got our forensic people

To go over the boat.

But because the coast guard initially treated it

Like an accident, a lot of the evidence was lost,

Unfortunately.

- As the sheriff's investigators looked

A little closer at the boat,

They lifted up a mattress at the back of the boat.

And at that point there's a turn in the story.

[dramatic music]

[tense music]

- While examining the bechlers' rental boat,

Homicide investigators find what could be

A consequential piece of evidence.

♪ ♪

- They lifted up a mattress at the back of the boat

And found a little speck of red matter

That appeared to be blood.

- The amount of blood that was found on the boat

Was not enough to get dna or even a blood typing out of.

- Unfortunately, they could not even determine

Whether that was human blood, whether it was from a fish,

From anything.

- Immediately we interview eric again.

We didn't divulge how much blood we did find on the boat,

But eric explained that during sex, pegye was on her period.

So that could explain that away.

- That's always a possibility. You can't rule it out,

But as homicide investigators, we don't take

What people say as the truth.

We investigate and see if there's more to it.

At that point, we know we need to further examine the boat

For any more forensic evidence.

- They decided to put a chemical

On the boat called luminol.

And what that does is when you put it on a surface,

It lights up where possible blood might have been.

And near the motor mount of the boat,

They found an area that appeared

To previously been covered in blood,

But had been cleaned up.

The naked eye could not detect it.

- Typically, rental boats are cleaned before each charter,

So there's no way for investigators to determine

When and who cleaned the boat.

- But that doesn't mean that nothing happened on that boat.

That's a big ocean out there.

You got a lot of water and a lot of time

To scrub that boat down.

Because we're suspicious of eric,

We continued digging into eric and pegye's financial issues.

- So investigators now talk to pegye's brother,

An insurance broker.

The investigators find out after they got married,

Both pegye and eric had taken out life insurance policies

On each other to the tune of $2.6 million apiece.

As investigators continued speaking more

To pegye's brother,

They discover something very interesting.

Eric called his brother-in-law just three months before

Pegye disappeared...

[phone beeping]

[line trilling] just to ask him

About the policy that they had signed years earlier.

"how does the payout work, god forbid,

If something happened to my wife?"

- A lot of red flags are popping up all over the place.

And I'm thinking the money could have been

A motivating factor to get rid of pegye.

However, insurance companies are not willing to pay out,

You know, on somebody that's being investigated

For a murder.

And we told them that eric is a person of interest.

And during this time period,

Eric's behavior is becoming more and more suspicious.

- It wasn't really a long time after pegye disappeared

When eric shipped the kids

To pegye's relatives to take care of.

- I still felt that eric is innocent,

But I remember thinking,

"how can you love your children like that

And say, 'I'll let you go'?"

- When you ship your kids away to a relative to take care of,

It doesn't seem like you want them in your life.

Soon after that, somebody familiar

To the investigators resurfaces,

Eric's buddy, kobi laker.

And he says that he wants to speak to them again.

- We ended up re-interviewing kobi.

- Kobi said that he looked at eric

And he goes, "are you joking?"

And eric goes, "I might be."

- And we said, "why didn't you tell us this initially?"

And he said he just got scared

And he was protecting his buddy.

We knew right then that eric had killed his wife.

♪ ♪

[tense music]

- After kobi laker tells detectives

That eric bechler confessed to wanting to kill his wife

And dump her in the ocean,

Authorities officially classify the case a homicide.

However, without forensic evidence to prove it,

Including her body,

Investigators face an uphill battle

To put the suspected killer behind bars.

- If we wanted to get justice for pegye,

We needed eric to admit to killing his wife on tape.

- Kobi agrees to wear a wire surreptitiously and meet

With eric in the hopes, in investigators' eyes,

That eric will say something incriminating

About what happened to pegye.

- Kobi tried to initiate some conversation

With eric about the incident.

[indistinct chatter]

- It's frustrating not to get eric's confession on tape.

It's basically kobi's word against what eric said.

And it wasn't enough for sean and I to even take

To the da based on what we had so far.

But, you know, we're gonna find out the truth

Of what really happened here.

[seagulls calling]

Shortly after the wire with kobi,

We were told by pegye's parents that eric had a girlfriend.

- Three months after his wife disappeared,

Eric meets a woman.

Her name is tina new.

- I will never forget my husband told me

That eric met somebody.

I was so floored.

I mean, pegye had been gone three months.

Supposedly the love of his life,

The mother of his children.

How in the world could this have

Possibly happened so quickly?

- You're supposed to be grieving your wife.

Most reasonable people would wait quite a while

Before they start dating again.

Tina wasn't involved in the case,

But tina's involved with eric.

- She could help break the case open.

We contacted tina and we said

That we would love to talk to you.

And she was cordial, and she said sure.

[unsettling music]

- The detectives were in my apartment.

They were asking lots of questions.

And I told them I was modeling and acting,

And I got a call from a photographer friend of mine

That played volleyball with eric.

And he said, "tina, there's a trade show,

And they needed a model."

Eric was starting this new business

Doing personal websites,

So I met eric October 6 of '97

To work for him that day at the trade show.

When I walked up to the booth where eric is,

Right away I was attracted to eric

'cause he had really light eyes.

I thought he was very good-looking.

And I remember that day he talked about his wife

And that he thinks she hit her head

And fell over, 'cause when he came back up, she was gone.

It was tragic, and they didn't know where she was.

At the end of the day, eric asked me,

"do you wanna come back to my house?"

And I felt comfortable because he was so nice to me

And such a gentleman to me and so soft-spoken.

Eric had this big three-level, gorgeous house,

And you could see the ocean from every window.

And then in every room, on almost every wall,

Was pictures, family photos, of pegye,

Her beautiful blond hair,

And she's, you know, holding her babies.

He really presented himself

In such a prince charming kind of way.

- We've explained to tina what we were doing

As far as a criminal investigation,

And if there's anything that sticks out in your mind

That there was something nefarious that went on out

On the boat that day, we would be very much interested in it.

- Eric talked so good about pegye,

So to think that that person could be accused

Of killing his wife, I just didn't see it.

I thought, "god, they're just trying to get him."

- She clearly, you know, believed his story,

What he told her.

- She was in love with this guy.

You know, it was the early part in their relationship.

But I just said, "here's my card."

Down the road, we were hoping that would pay off

Because relationships, they go south.

- I think sean's words were, "we're gonna get a call

"one day from her, you know,

When she gets tired of his crap."

When there's trouble in paradise,

There's people who wanna tend to talk.

- I really wanted to believe that eric did not do this.

But it's like all of a sudden, eric's life totally changed.

Pegye's no longer here.

And eric has taken up with some new beautiful woman.

At this point, I started facing the fact

That he was the one who had killed pegye.

- Circumstantial as it may be,

All of this evidence is mounting up.

But as we're going along here, the months pass,

And we got to a point where, in this case,

It stagnates, and it's extremely frustrating.

- He's already killed one woman.

I mean, it's a good chance he's gonna get violent

And go to the extreme and possibly seriously injure

Or kill another woman.

- And if it wasn't gonna be tina new,

It'd be somebody else down the road.

- We kept tabs on eric, but we focused on other big cases.

- I remember wondering, "is he ever gonna be arrested?

Or is he just gonna be off scot-free

For the death of my friend?"

Which is what it felt like for a very long time.

[phone ringing]

- And then you fast-forward a few years later,

I get a call in the middle of the night

From my watch commander at the sheriff's department

'cause two officers were dispatched

For a domestic violence incident

At an apartment complex,

And the woman gave the officers my business card to call us.

It was tina.

[dramatic music]

[sirens wailing]

[indistinct radio chatter]

- Eric's girlfriend, tina new, had called for help

'cause eric had come upon her apartment threatening her.

- We were yelling, and the neighbor called the cops.

The orange county sheriff's department came,

And I sat them all down in my living room.

I said, "I know I've met with you guys before,

But at this point I know that eric killed his wife."

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

I told the detectives, like, a few weeks prior,

I was with eric and I was looking for a tv show episode

When I was an actress.

And when I was fast-forwarding for my show

To go through the commercials to get to where it started,

It stopped on pegye's face.

And I'm not joking. It was a big picture,

Like a headshot, of pegye.

And it was what the news had done

On the day eric's wife was missing.

And they start talking about the water conditions

And the currents.

It was smooth and calm.

It was nothing like he described.

♪ ♪

And I looked at eric and I said, "you lied to me."

The color came out of him, and he became white.

It just came to me.

I said, "oh, my god, you hit her over the head."

He goes, "how did you know that?"

And so from that point on,

He told me what he really did.

What he described to me was the day before

Pegye and eric went out on the boat, he had gone

To a certain location where he had left an ice chest.

He had weights, trash bags.

He had margarita mix.

[ominous music]

♪ ♪

Pegye didn't know because he told pegye,

"I need to pull over. I have a surprise for you."

And she never looked inside of it

Because she knew it was a surprise.

He said she was just laying out and he goes,

"tina, I walked up behind her.

I hit her so hard, she didn't feel a thing."

♪ ♪

And he said, "and then I folded her over in half."

And he goes, "I tied her wrists and her ankles

And her neck all together."

And he said he put two trash bags over her.

He dropped her down with two weights, 35 pounds each.

- People often think that what goes into the water

Stays in the water, but because of bloating

During decomposition,

Even when weighted down, bodies can resurface.

However, if she was picked up by a fast-moving tide,

Pegye's body could have been pushed out to sea.

Whether or not they find her remains,

Authorities are closer to an arrest

For this no-body homicide

Given the insight provided by tina new.

- And I told the detectives I broke up with him.

I was done. I was like, "I'm outta here."

But as soon as I saw that tape,

Eric would never leave my sight.

He followed me. He stalked me. He called me.

He knew I knew everything, and he'd say,

"I think you're going to the cops."

So I was afraid of eric at that time.

- It was the break I was waiting for,

'cause tina can help solve this case for us.

- Now we're off to the races.

But we can't just use it from her and go to the da.

That's not gonna work.

We need to hear it from him.

- We asked her, "would you be willing to wear a body wire,

"try and elicit some incriminating statements

From him?"

- We just wanted her to get him

To reiterate what he told her that night.

- I was terrified because I was the only person

He said that knew.

But the detective said, "don't worry.

You'll be protected."

- She arranged to meet him

At the el torito restaurant in irvine.

We just impressed upon her,

He has to say that he killed pegye.

And ask him to tell you how he did it.

Tell him you wanted to get assurance from him

That he wouldn't do anything to you.

- And if he denies it like he did with kobi,

We're back where we were.

- We wired up her purse with a microphone,

And we wired up her body.

- The plan was for me to go pick up eric

And go to the restaurant.

The wire was on my lower back.

And my biggest fear at that time was

Him putting his arm around me and him feeling it.

- She has to act cool, confident, normal

When all your instincts are saying,

"how can I act normal?

I'm sitting across from a killer."

So the stakes are huge.

- We had detectives inside the restaurant,

And then we were outside in the parking lot in our van.

- We were listening to it real-time.

- I think we were on our second margarita each.

And that's when I was starting to get conversations going.

I told him things just were not lining up with him.

And the cops were talking to me.

- I said, "what I don't get is,

Why didn't you just divorce her?"

- That stuff about the kids didn't make any sense

Because after pegye disappeared,

Eric had shipped the kids off to pegye's parents.

That suited him just fine.

- And when we're listening to the wire,

We're going, "yeah, we're getting it, we're getting it."

And it's coming from him, not her.

- But then when it was time to leave, eric says to me,

"tina, you can't drink and drive, so I'm driving.

Give me your keys."

I get in the passenger seat.

We're now on a freeway.

We're not going towards eric's house,

And I don't know where the cops are.

I don't know if they're in the restaurant

Still or if they're following us

On the freeway.

- He wanted to go somewhere with her.

And she was all wired up, and that was not the plan.

She's all alone now with this killer.

- And he goes, "you seem like you're afraid of me."

I go, "I'm terrified of you."

- The most important thing for us was to get tina to safety.

And now this thing could go sideways on us quick.

[suspenseful music]

- Tina's wearing a wire,

And she was supposed to be driving.

But they got in her car, and eric drove.

That wasn't supposed to happen.

- I was freaking out, and I don't know where the cops are.

Like, I didn't know if they were following me or what.

- Tina was a pit bull.

She hit him with the questions

And wouldn't let him avoid it.

And I finally just said, "you just need to get outta my car."

- That's kind of a nice statement

Because who says that,

Other than somebody who's done something wrong?

- And he got out of the car and he goes,

"you're just gonna leave me here on the side of the road?"

And I go, "yeah."

- After eric got out of the car,

He ended up in a del taco.

So we found him, and I just went in

And sat down in the booth

And said, "hey, eric. How you doing?

You're under arrest."

He says, "for what?" and I said, "we'll talk

About it when we get downtown."

And then he lawyered up right there.

So we didn't get any statement from him.

- I'm exhausted, and it's, like, late at night.

I'm on the freeway. I'm crying.

And this beeping is going on.

And that's where the detectives,

They were waving like this, like pull over.

And they said, "you did great, and we just arrested eric."

I was nervous the whole time, but I honestly knew

If anybody's gonna get him to confess

While wearing a wire, it's gonna be me.

And I did.

- Finally. Finally, he has been arrested.

Maybe now justice will be served

And he will be punished for murdering my best friend.

- Before the case went to trial,

Eric was maintaining his innocence.

"it was an accident at sea.

And I really miss my wife. I miss my kids."

- We did a search warrant at eric's.

And we found a weight tree

Where all the weights were intact

Except two 35-pound weights,

Which happened to be the weights that he told tina

That he hit pegye and tied her up with.

- And that was just icing on the cake.

[gentle somber music]

- It was the biggest case happening

In not just orange county, but in southern california

And beyond.

- At this time in orange county,

The district attorney's office

Had not prosecuted a no-body case.

We knew the recording was good and the weights,

But you just never know.

- Eric testified that he wasn't serious when he said

He killed his wife.

His justification for making up that story

Was that tina kind of liked the bad-boy image.

- So eric testified that he told tina

Whatever she wanted to hear.

- When the case had gone to the jury,

Everybody's starting to get nervous.

- There's only so much circumstantial evidence

You can put together for a no-body case.

That's why trials are nerve-wracking.

- After seven days of deliberation...

Eric was convicted of first-degree murder.

- Eric bechler was sentenced to life in prison

Without the possibility of parole.

- And I remember the tears that immediately came

And the relief that you could just feel

Throughout the entire courtroom.

It was phenomenal.

- Without tina, we wouldn't be here today.

I have to thank her again for having the wherewithal

To wear a wire.

- I just did what I think anybody would do.

You know?

I really do think that I was put in this relationship

For a reason.

- After killing his wife, pegye,

Eric bechler seemed to think he would never be caught

If authorities couldn't find her body.

But he didn't consider how doggedly they would pursue
