I'm, like, just in shock. I walk

over to her, and she's in this, like,

hospital bed. And I give her, like,

an awkward hug. I I hug her really low,

like, around her stomach with my right

arm, and then I put my left arm up on her

shoulder. In that

moment, my hand touches her scabs.

Oh, fuck. Here's the thing. Ah, fuck.

And I started really looking at her. And

I remember getting, like, sick.

Her whole entire back has, you know, a

burn exodus about this long across

it. Nose looks like,

you know, somebody hit it really hard.

Oh, my God. Bruises on her back, her

legs, front, side. She has a

hole in her arm. All of her ribs are

showing, like, big time, protruding. I

mean, just...

I never did see you again. Any

doubt I had, it just disappeared.

It's been It's been chaos, and it's been

a max hit. We're all here together. We

should lie, and we don't have to break

through unless you lose. But

obviously, there's only a lot that we

need to start working on today. I know

it's the whole experience shared, so...

You said that Bayline Halls, I don't want

to talk to them. What, our justice is at

Bayline Hall?

So it was Brian Jackson and Detective

Kyle Wallace, myself and Sherry,

and she doesn't want to talk

because she doesn't trust lawenforcement.

It's really hard to overcome that type of

allegation at that point in that room. I

needed basic things done quickly. I

don't want to talk to them. I know,

you're going to talk to me though. And

they're writing down everything that I'm

saying. Keith was asked to

try to obtain as much information as

possible. I don't know how this stuff

goes, but obviously I'm not on the other

side now, so we didn't talk to her. She's

not comfortable saying. She said she

read me articles. She said they don't

believe in me and that and that there was

one involved and that they they think I

left voluntarily and I didn't and and

that there's one involved. That's all.

That's what she said. I don't want to

talk to you. I think... Well, I've

walked in. It's not me, so I'm gonna go

look at that. I'm not leaving.

I gotta figure this out.

It's only gonna happen.

This is an SUV. This is a dark

colored SUV. Dark colored

SUV, and there's just one person?

Two. Two women today.

This is the one today. There's the one

today. The younger one. There's an older

one in the younger one. Hold on. When

they were Hispanic, they spoke Spanish a

lot. I... Stomach.

Okay. So,

um.. If I don't struggle, then

I can go home. If I don't struggle, I can

go home. Something happened, something

went wrong, something happened, something

went wrong. And she said, If I don't

struggle, I can go home. I just want to

go home. I want to go home. I want

to

go home. So... Do I get your transport?

Just stop. He's not leaving. We're

Is she okay?Sheila will. Then she gets

Seeing her for the first time...

She looked like she had been

tortured and beaten.

I was angry

and ready to

hurt the individuals that had done it to

her. And

I was just in shock that she was

alive and that I

had another

chance to live a life with her,

to be a part of her,

because I thought that it was gone.

I'm so sorry. Yeah, I don't think we

have. You have too much info. It sounds

like she was just dropped off. She

wandered until she laid on the ground.

Breaking news from California. That

mother, Sherry Papini, was who vanished

while Johnny was in Yolo

County. Some are calling it a

Thanksgiving miracle like today of all

days to be really thankful for everything

everyone's done. Hallelujah! Best

thing ever. Best Thanksgiving. Sherry

Papini is in stable condition tonight.

She's been reunited with her husband,

Keith. I knew I was going to get to tell

my kids, guess what?I found Mommy.

We are looking for a dark colored

SUVs are searching for two Hispanic

women driving a car. They found DNA of a

female and a man. The County Sheriff told

reporters he doesn't know why Papini was

released now, or why here, or where

she has been held for the past three

weeks. Sheriffs are interviewing her

again as soon as they can. Test 1-2.

She's the most valuable resource. What

did she hear?What did she see?They

believe the smallest detail could lead to

a break in this case.

Keith, can you say what today's date is

Today's the 28th, right?November 28th,

2016.

We had asked to do the interview by

herself, but she refused and

wanted Keith in the room. If Keith wasn't

in the room, she wouldn't have probably

done the interview, so we just

had to take it on the chin and do it.

Taking him away would make things harder.

So I I feel like

it will be easier with Keith. Yeah,

absolutely. Here. That's it. Do you want

to hit again?

She felt safe with me in the

room and

unsafe if I wasn't there with her.

Where would you like to start to start us

off on the day?From the beginning. Yeah,

show me that and see what happens.

I did my usual routine. Bed the kids

breakfast, dropped them up at Pandora's.

Nothing unusual. It wasn't even a hard to

buy. Sometimes they're like, No, don't

leave me. Wasn't even like

a hard,

difficult

That's right.

Nothing. Yeah. Text messaged my husband.

To

come home for lunch.

Which, you know, looking back, it's quite

embarrassing. He's like, Thanks

for, you know, that last text message.

Honey, will you please come home to have

sex with your wife?

It was hard for me. I remember, I

remember that day like it was yesterday.

Um,

so it's hard to talk about that because

what if, what if I come home that day for

lunch?I

mean, are we here right now?

I want to say it's called the 5K Runner

app that I was using. There's a song I

listen to every time I run, so I put the

song on. What's that song?Our

wedding song. It's a good pacekeeper

and it puts me in a good mood. Um So

There's certainly things that are very

difficult to explain.

You're doing good, Sherry.

You're having-- The window goes down, but

it was...

It was a woman.

Are you having a hard time calling?It's

frustrating because I know...

I know she was wearing a hat, but I can't

see the color, and I can't see her

clothes.

As you're going through this, you're

you're pulling your memory

from the back side of your head and

trying to remember everything, and

sometimes it goes back to your brain

saying, I can't get there right now.

It may sound silly. If,

going back to before you see the car, if

there was a bird, a bluebird, a robin,

whatever bird you picked, sitting up here

in the tree,

and this bluebird is just watching, and

the bluebird sees you running down the

road, and then the bluebird sees this car

coming. What is that bluebird seeing

going on?

Running to the mailboxes, the

vehicle stopped, backed up, and

then stopped again. And then I cut

diagonally. And that's-- I don't even

remember the door opening. I'll

make an opening. Ask for help. I want to

say it's maybe like a hang or

something to get my attention. Is

that the passenger or the girl?Is the

car on Sunrise right now, or is it still

on Old Oregon Trail?It's on...

It's on Old Oregon Trail. Yeah.

I walked towards

where the vehicle had backed up.

I had my phone in my right hand and my

earbuds on, and I took out my

left to hear her.

And then she opened the door.

And then I saw the small

revolver.

And I immediately ducked down.

I crouched down. Show

that to you. It shouldn't be anybody for

us. Should be like

a... Nope, and just so you know, there's

only one person at my office, two people

that know that we're here. The detective

and my lieutenant.

When Sherry returned,

the media was just

non-stop.

To be honest, when Sherry went missing,

that was my goal. My goal is to get her

face everywhere.

David, the sheriff also told me they're

investigating Sherry Papini's past,

including her previous divorce and any

online activity. So many open questions

and as we... We had so

many vehicles up and down our road, just

cameras staring at the house. I mean, I

have a pretty good-sized fence, and they

would come through the fence. We never

stopped getting letters and

invitations and phone calls from the

media. Hi, Mr. Papini. This is Dr. Mehmet

Oz. I host the Dr. Oz show,

and I've been following your story. We

had phone calls from Dr. Oz show and

Dr. Phil. We had

people that came onto the property. Since

she surfaced Thanksgiving, Sherry Papini

has only been seen once in public. We

thought it was time to go to their house.

Hey, Keith?Sherry?It's

Chris Hansen with Crime Watch Daily. If

you're home, we just wanted to talk about

maybe doing an interview. Keith?It's

sort of ridiculous.

We were still being followed by

paparazzi. You guys are chasing me

around. Wave to them. Hi, guys.

So we kept like a really low profile

and just really tried to focus on her

healing in the kids. Obviously, they were

very young at that time.

I can't remember if she said, We don't

want to hurt you. We don't want to kill

you. I can't remember exactly, but we

don't want to something. We don't want to

something.

And then I put my phone down, and as soon

as I put it down, I

was so mad because I couldn't call

my husband, and as soon as I put

it down, I... And thenturn, and

I pull my hair out because... I ran

away, and I didn't, and I should have,

and I just... And

I can't remember. I can't remember

lifting my leg. I can't remember the back

door open.

Take a drink of water if you need to. I

don't want to...

run something by you. Let's see if this

might be able to help a little bit.

You're... What's the next thing you

remember seeing?

It wasn't what I saw, it was

what I felt. I

was very nauseous.

and cold, smelling

laundry detergent on the

pillowcase that was over my head. Do

you remember where you were when you

realized it was on your head?The floor

on my side when the vehicle

was moving.

Were you asked to put it on or did

somebody put it on you?I woke up with it

on. Does the bluebird see which way the

car goes?Yeah.

You're

doing fine. It's good right here. You're

recalling things from, like, your first

person view, correct?When you're going

through, you're seeing it through your

own eyes. You

understand anything about it?You're doing

good. Okay. But as you're going

through this, you're, you're, you're

pulling...

Yeah, it's tough to watch. I mean, I

remember those moments I remember

feeling. I just felt so bad for her. I

can't remember. I can't remember lifting

my leg. I can't remember. Just a lot of

mixed emotion at that time. I'm happy

because Sherry's there. But

I can only imagine what she had been

through. In

that moment, I just wanted to go back in

time. Heyo. Heyo.

Back to our first date that night at the

lake. We just kind of

laid out a blanket and sat right there on

the dock and just kind of talked the rest

of the night. It was definitely head over

heels for her very quickly.

Um She... Told me that night

that she was married and I was like,

whoa, who is this guy?She's like,

oh, we don't really know each other. He's

in the military.

He wanted to marry me so that he could

make more money. And I needed his

benefits because I needed to get heart

surgery. And I was like, heart surgery.

And I was like, wow. And she's like, but

I'm getting a divorce.

I just said OK. And then after that

point, we continued to. kiss and makeout.

Everything after that then, it was just

amazing. We just hung out all the time.

Things were going great.

Okay, my first impression of Sherry is,

there's something wrong, she's too nice.

Very first impression, my sister and

I looked at each other and said, okay,

What's wrong with her?And then the

more I was around

her, and Keith was so happy,

and she really was that sweet. She

really was a wonderful

girl. I thought it was

perfect. Everything was supposed to

be perfect.

This is Kyle Wallace for follow-up

learning tip of the family dynamics.

They've had issues, you know, back and

forth. He's very protective over her.

He definitely is, you know, part of the

reason why she doesn't have a Facebook

page is because he didn't want her

being looked at. She's had lots of

boyfriends, lots of men in her life. Was

that a problem for him or?It was a

problem for him, yes. You know, I I do

know that he struggled when she would go

out. There was way too

many people. There was like 3,000 people

inside one tiny little hotel. But, to

make it all wonderful, Keith came and

surprised me. You have to flip it around

and say hi. What's up?He came and

surprised me. He said he wasn't going.

Thank you, honey, for coming and

surprising me. You're the best fiance any

girl could ever ask for. I love you.

Thank you. So at

that time, I was just looking at the

evidence to see what avenues we had

missed. We learned that relationship had

stress, so it opened up our eyes to

the fact that it wasn't a perfect

marriage. It wasn't

the ideal situation.

You know, we definitely had arguments

over the years. I remember one specific

time where I was trying to leave,

and she was blocking the door, would not

let me go. I'm at the top of the stairs

in her townhouse. And she

grabbed a picture frame and threw it at

me and just destroyed my knee. I mean,

it split it so far open, and I was, like,

in shock.

Um Sherry had told me about it,

that he hadpushed her like

up against the closet doors and she

had kind of stumbled back because the

closet had opened and she had like fallen

in with her shoes and purses and whatever

was in there. She went

over and grabbed a picture frame because

she was scared that he was really going

to hurt her.

Why do you think that happened?

He was confronting her. He was

confronting her saying what what is this

about?that she was talking to other

guys. He found out about it. And so

he was upset. Do I think that he put his

hands on her?I don't think he did.

Do you remember any music?Yeah.

Mariachi music. It was probably a

radio station. There was so many elements

of consideration. A lot of the questions

we were asking were really just trying to

establish what had happened.

fine. The things that she didn't know

were expected. With no motive

and vague details, they're hoping a

warrant on area cell phone towers will

provide some answers. This is just an odd

case from the beginning. Male DNA was

also... She doesn't say much because

she's having these recollection problems.

Her captors just dropped her off right

there behind me. You still have no reason

at all to doubt her story?Absolutely not.

Yeah, I didn't believe her. When

the story came out, pretty much

immediately, red flags started popping up

for me.

Being from Redding, California, I

started investigating. And I went out

to the actual location where she

apparently had been abducted. Yeah, so

right here. It's not necessarily

something that is really hidden from

other houses. Right there in that spot,

there are five houses that can see that

spot. At the time of year, a lot of the

leaves on these trees were gone. You've

got all of these locations right here

that actually have eyesight. And so

it would have been pretty gutsy for

anybody to stop there, wrestle

a young woman into the car, and take off.

There were no skid marks of feet being

dragged across the gravel. There was

no sign of any kind of struggle

whatsoever. Also in the

video that was released, Sherry is

running without being constrained by

chains, whichI found very interesting

because when she was flagging the

vehicles down on the freeway,

she still had one arm in chains.

And I kind of started

questioning Keith. I had a

hard time really

believing everything that he was saying.

Very dramatic and, you know, deep

emotions andIt made me

question if he actually knew more

than what he was letting on.

She's so strong. I started

writing about some of the things that I

was discovering that called into question

their story.

And the next thing I know, within 24

hours, it had some 50,000 reads.

I was aware of the social media aspect. I

was aware of the people doubting her

story. Um

And some things I'm like, yeah, that that

makes sense. That That does sound weird,

but you didn't see her. I'm a

rule follower, especially when it comes

from like law enforcement. SoI gave them

all of our records. I gave them the

phones. On the very first day, I gave

them both of our phones. I gave them all

of my laptops. I never got a lawyer. I

gave them full access to everything in

our lives, and they couldn't come up with

anything. And

we have this broken body.

Um You know, I just,

it was noise, and I didn't I didn't try

to listen to it. It's

an astonishing and emotional story, one

that kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart

can identify with. She was just 14

years old when she was abducted and held

captive for nine months. It's really

important for people to realize that when

a survivor comes back, whatever they did,

they did to survive. I found my one thing

that I could hold on to no matter what,

that my captors couldn't take away from

me or change. That was my family. And I

would imaginethat the same would be true

for Sherry. I would imagine that she held

on to them. She survived for

them.

Those first few weeks, Sherry was having

a hard time recalling a lot of events.

It was abundantly clear that

she needed some therapy through this

trauma that she went through.

And we started establishing a therapy

schedule. And Sherry wanted me

present. So I attended therapy with her

twice a week, two hours Tuesday, two

hours Thursday. It was

suggested from the therapist,

like, well, why don't you start writing a

book about your abduction

as a way of capturing memories while

they're still somewhat fresh.

That turned into this book

dubbed The 22 Days.

That's her version in her own words.

I mean, it's rough.

In that room, I remember what it felt

like. The blurred vision and tracing of

colors. It was

two very different personalities I dealt

with while in captivity, one

older and larger woman. We will call

her Smegma and a smaller but

muscular woman. We will call her

Taint. Smegma

was relentless. She never wavered

or bent to reason and body language

you would see in an adult male gorilla

defending his turf. She didn't

liketo feed me or allow me to shower.

She is the monster I fear in every

stranger that approaches my personal

space.

People obviously thought it was a hoax.

I heard a lot of opinions of the unknown

DNA that was found. Lots of people were

talking about Sherry's recollection of

things. Everybody had an

opinion. This is clue

300 of 900. I think that we got up to

956. It just takes

time to get through the data. But to me,

there were so many injuries that were

healing and on top of one another that it

showed that she was in pain

several different times over a couple of

weeks.

All of the bruising, all of the scars, it

was horrific.

We had a lot of attention. A lot of

people wanted answers, just nonstop.

We were fortunate enough. I had some

really good friends that had an amazing

house up in Mount Shasta, a really

beautiful log cabin home,

and they allowed us to stay there.

I remember Sherry wanted me to take

some photos of us like basically like

reunited. Um

So she had me set up a a camera to

take like, you know, just pictures

of us holding each other and and kissing.

as if to say like you know she was she's

been found and we're together as a

husband and wife again.

There was usually both of them were

there. Were there any other-- any times

where it was just one of them?

No, every-- well, that's hard to

say because I would be on all fours with

my head down.

But I feel like the bigger one

enjoyed it and the little one did not.

Does that make any sense?Absolutely.

The things like the burns, cutting my

hair, the burn on my arm, that was

all from the bigger one. It was not from

the little one.

Somehow the brand occurred. I just have a

couple of questions in here too. Yes,

get it over with.

So obviously there's each muttering to

it. Was it all at once or was it

several different or... All done at any

one extent.

She would go into detail on that, and the

pain, and the sounds that she would hear

when her skin was bubbling and cracking,

and the smell of the hair that was burnt.

My first burn. The

door swung open and I flinched hard.

My eyes immediately fell to the ground.

She was over me so fast.

I couldn't see but she touched it with

something and I screamed in pain.

What was the younger one doing

specifically at that time?I want to say

tools or something. She was the one

handling. Did you hear it or did you

see the tool?I couldn't see it.

because it was behind me, where

my head was on the table.

I remember the sound

of the teaking on a metal pan.

In her book, there was a moment where her

captors tell her who was involved.

There was more than one burn. I was

shaking. I touched it and my skin

just fell off. Just the air around it

was painful. The police were fining

me. I said loud enough for Smegna to

hear me. Your buyer is a cock, Hutov,

Smegna said with a cocky tone as she

stood behind Tank and laughed.

Please, my children need their mother,

I would say. Please let me go home to

my baby.

Good job. There we go. I have a white

one. That's OK. We'll get you some more.

Can you put it right there?We knew we had

a long road to recovery, but she was

there. She was with us. And I,

you know, couldn't ask for anything else

in the world at that point. First

Christmas back, we had a lot of family

visit.

She had trouble

making eye contact, even with family

members. I didn't get to

see her very much at all.

One time, she brought the kids over to my

house. She asked if my husband was going

to be there. And I had told her no,

because he was at work that day. And

I said, why?And she was like, oh, I

just-- I don't know if I'm ready. I don't

really know Dennis all that well. That

meeting new people was absolutely off the

table. That

just feeling of dread and sadness for her

and what she must have been going

through, those feelings that she must

have had during-- you know, God knows how

you must be feeling.

For the next few months, we went

dark, if you will.

We didn't leave the house.

We lived in

in a

constant set of fear

I mean, I thought someone was going to

come here and finish the job,

or harm the kids, or take the kids,

or anything. So I mean, we had the

security gate, security doors, and

cameras, and you know, self-defense

stuff. Whatever I could do to

help her feel more comfortable, you know,

we did.

If the kids were playing outside,Sherry

had them to where they would run inside

if there was a stranger walking or a car

that they didn't recognize, thinking it

was either somebody's going to take them

or somebody's going to take a photo of

them. We had all the windows covered

in blankets. The

nights, nights were difficult.

She wouldn't sleep with the the lights

off. And I don't mean a night light. I

mean the lights were on.

Nightmares. Not just like, you know,

shaking in your sleep, but I mean

audible, screaming,

nightmares.

Are you chained up?Yes, yes

Okay, take a deep breath, sweetie. Who

chained you up?Do you know the person or

were you kidnapped?

I went to several of her therapy

appointments with her. She

would curl up and

start screaming or start

crying.

She would work through something in

therapy, but then she would

find something new that would trigger

her.

There's so many precautions taken.

One time I was cooking dinner, or we had

some kind of gathering. And at the

time, she refused to eat black beans,

'cause they only fed her

Cold black beans out of a can.

Can't handle anything that had to do with

the Hispanic culture. If there were

anybody with dark, curly hair,

any Hispanic people, that would

heighten everything to another level.

Like, is that them?Sherry had told

me that she was triggered by a lot of

things. Loud noises, closed

doors. Right there. would instantly

just put her into a frantic mode. She

couldn't drive by the mailbox. She could

not drive on her own. If she

needed to use the restroom, she couldn't

handle the door shut. Then I would

obviously have to go into the bathroom

and then close it, but she wouldn't want

me to lock it. Because the sound of that

click... That would send her right down

into crying. Keith was...

she had to be next to him at all times.

He was in charge of everything.

She wouldn't eat food if it wasn't

prepared by either myself

or her sister Sheila or like somebody.

She had to know the person and it had to

be done in front of them because she was

being drugged by

these people and they would put the drugs

in her food.

She would just be like a blank stare. The

kids would be like mom and she just. It's

almost like she was just not in the room.

You know, a lot of these things that she

would have me do, she, you know, if I'm

at work, you know, she was having the

kids do. I got

two just fresh,

awake little babies. Two fresh,

awake little babies.

I remember coming in one day and I saw

Tyler sitting in front of her, just kind

of tapping like this,

bilaterals. to get her to kind

of calm down.

If you're having a moment, and she would

have a lot of moments, I would say, Hey,

do you think you could do that, you know,

in another part of the house or something?

Like, if you need to cry, totally fine,

go cry. You need to scream and do a

pillow, you can do that. But

doing it around the kids, I always had

kind of an issue with that.

A year later into this thing, there's

questions that just don't make sense. But

I do remember also not caring. And again,

I told Keith, you know, wherever side of

the fence you want me on, that's where

I'm going to stand forever. And I even

remember a little party that happened--

not a party, but a gathering of probably

10, 15 people out of their house, you

know, a little bit after she was feeling

better.

We wanted to share with our friends and

family some details, and it was right

here in actually this very room.

She wanted to have everyone's

stories of how they found out

about Sherry being alive.

And one particular story really was

emotional, and that was

from our really good friends Ryan and

Lauren. His wife runs out from the house

saying, They found her! Oh wow,

alive?Really?Oh,

my gosh. Thorin, it's so amazing. Oh,

my gosh. You know, she wanted to

play that in front of everybody so that

they could kind of see what we what

we saw from them. And And it was just

very-- I mean, very emotional in the

room. Sherry got to explain to

everybody that she was drugged, and

that's why she doesn't remember

everything. You had people saying, I

did this, I did that. And you could

see how she was like, Wow, like you did

all this for me.

It was nice to have everyone together,

but the reason they were together, it

just, the whole thing was awkward. It's

very hard to explain, but it just didn't

seem right. I

had a weak moment with our therapist.

I said, ThisThis could

sound bad, but I mean, sometimes I

don't believe what Sherry's telling me to

be true. She's like, Okay, well, you

know, one thing I can always tell you is

her story has never changed. So it wasn't

like she was getting different stories. I

think she would have told me, like, Hey,

she said this one day and this the next

day. And at the end of the day, like,

look at her body. You can't fake that

kind of stuff, you know?

Look at her body, you know?Look at the

scars.

Do you think she's capable of that?

And I remember I took a long pause.

In a very

shameful way, I

was like, yeah. Like, I

I can actually kind of see her doing

that. And I remember she looked at me,

like, very puzzled by that answer.

ButShe

seemed to do odd things in the past.

She would lie. She would manipulate.

There's a story of Sherry's back.

This is prior to our marriage. Sherry had

these two scars that were about that

long, and they were right in the center

of her back, almost as if you were to

have like wings. And then I was

like, I mean, those are pretty

substantial scars. And she

basically said, oh, that's from an

ex-boyfriend. His name

was James, and he used to, you know,

hurt me. And I was like, oh, my gosh. She

stated that he took two knives and

stabbed her in the back.

But what Sherry forgot is that at an

earlier time, she told Jennifer a

different story.

Sherry had said that her father,

Richard, had held her down. and had cut

her with an X-Acto knife on her back.

Come to find out, she had done it herself

and had had admitted that to me when we

lived together.

I, like, know nothing about that kind of

stuff. People that, I guess, cut

themselves. Like, I just-- it's not a

world that I know anything about and

never have. So, you know, I kind of let

it go. It wasn't until after she was back

in 2016I was kind of

questioning her on all kinds of things.

And she would say, I'm sorry, that wasn't

your first wife. And when I tell that to

people, they're like, Wait, you were

married before?I'm like, No. She's

saying that this is how

she used to be, but then she was

kidnapped and tortured and

ripped away from her family and she's so

grateful to be back that she's done with

these games. And she she would say,

I... am not

capable of lying anymore.

So I just said, okay,

you don't know if this is true or not,

but how how

horrible is it if someone goes through

a tragic event and your spouse doesn't

believe you?Like what kind of damage is

that going to do to somebody?

Didn't that momentIt was like, yeah,

whatever you need, whatever you need to

heal, I'm there and I'll do whatever I

need to. Oh,

I see a fellow going to their wallet up

there. Watch out. As time progressed in

therapy, we would go to, say,

Oregon or down south just to get out

of the area, so we were just random

people at that point for the most part.

And one particular trip... We went to

Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons

and through Salt Lake City and up to

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Violet Tyler.

Our son, you know, learned to ride a bike

without training wheels on that trip, so

it was very, very memorable. He's riding

a bike.

And we did get out in some public spaces,

and it seemed like she put her guard

down. For the first

time, we have progress.

And what I mean by that is she couldn't

even lift her head, and then now her

head's a little bit higher, you knowAnd

it wasn't a week, it wasn't two weeks, it

was over months and months and months,

and then years and years.

The therapist and Cherry drove to Yolo

County to the spot Cherry was released.

It was such a powerful moment for her.

I was just happy to get some normalcy

back.

OK, here we go. Da bomb. When you

say barely touch-- I mean, like, you

shouldn't even-- like, you could try a

couple times, and if it doesn't even get

on it, you're OK. That's enough.

Just a little teensy weensy.

I can't look. Oh my gosh. Mommy. Mommy. Oh

my gosh! Mommy! Mommy!

Mommy! Hold on Ty, hold

on Ty. Hold on Ty.

Ohh I'm

okay. I'm okay. Oh, Ty. It's okay, buddy.

It's okay.

Oh, this poor bull. Get

some water, get some water.

Our kids were tremendously affected by

this.

It makes you angry. It makes you get

upset.

Who did this to my family?They were

still out there.

I had serious doubts that the

sheriff's office and even the FBI were

really getting anywhere. I knew there was

DNA out there, but they weren't getting

any hits.

That was just another start to a new

chapter for Keith. It wasn't resolved in

his mind. He wanted answers. You know, if

his wife had been taken, he wanted

someone to be punished for it.

Throughout the healing process, I was

basically listening. I was

taking notes, asking you know every

question you could think to ask. Roughly

how big was the room?We would go to

different rooms in the house to try to

get a sense of that. Where was your bed

located?Where was the window?What did the

walls look like?In the closet, there was

a wire that she was chained

to. I was trying to draw an actual

floor plan. I thought a great suggestion

from the therapist was to take shoe boxes

so we could almost have like a bird's eye

view of up above looking down and pieced

shoe boxes together as if they were the

rooms. We used the 22 days for

reference. Sherry

was very specific about the house that

she was in. Several sketches

have been made of the room.

My prison. I can still

remember the musty smell,

the odor from the mattress, the feel of

the carpet, and every spot on the floor

that creaked. There

was one window with three boards fastened

to the wall. There

was a small plastic garbage can I used as

a latrine. My cable

ran into the closet and was attached to

the metal pole with a single loop.

The loop on the opposite end was attached

to the thick metal chain around my waist.

The closet was oddly equipped.

Essentially, this drawing is

representative of the closet area. Pipe

that went all the way down, that was like

an all-thread pipe. The chain that

she had was wrapped around that padlock

and then secured to

her. So the closet seemed to be

unique. I said, you know, kind of

describe the table to me. She said very

thin, more like a coffee table with a

gray, like, marble pattern. So I started

researching until she said, yes, that

looks like it. And that photo

that I found is actually this

table right here. So I thought this was a

really big detail. So I reached out to

the FBI right away and provided them with

this photo. Keith

fed me. I don't want to say he fed me

information, but Keith provided me

information pretty frequently. He was

always on the Internet with Sherry,

trying to jog her memory, trying to get

details. And then when she suggested a

sketch artist, I'm like. I'll be more

than happy to get you a sketch artist,

and we can do this next week. A

mysterious abduction right back in the

headlines tonight. There are new

developments in last year's mysterious

disappearance of California. I'm Sherry

Papini. Today, the Sheriff's Office

releasing new sketches of the two

Hispanic women. Her abductors was a woman

with long, curly hair, pierced ears and

thin eyebrows between 20 to 30 years

old. She said the other woman had

straight black hair with some Gray and

thick eyebrows between 40 to 50 years

old. The community does need to be

concerned. OK, the bottom line is if

strangers took her in a van off the

street, the community should be worried.

We received many, many, many tips

of I saw Hispanic women here. I saw

Hispanic women there. There's a

person at this gas station who works in a

restaurant who looks like the older,

fatter subject. And we were getting tips

from different states.

I mean, we had asked for the public's

help to try and identify. And so as you

can imagine, there was there's plenty of

people that fit that general description.

How could any of us feel safe with

two lunatics on the loose that steal

people right off the street?It

changes everything. It makes you upset

that you start questioning your neighbors

more than you ever did before. 25% of the

county is Latino. Papini provided the FBI

accounts that the women only spoke

Spanish and played music very loudly,

that really annoying Mexican music.

It It was a concern that the violence

could be taken against the Hispanic

community, just because when people are

afraid, they they feel more emboldened to

take action into their own hands. Why do

you hate us?Because we're Mexicans?

Some are good and some are rapists and

some are killers. We're honest people

right here.

Racism is out there. Whether you want to

say it does or doesn't exist, it's out

there. They showed the sketches. I was

like, no. Like, no.

That was sketchy, you know?

It looked like a gangster from like the

1980s movies.

But it affected those around me.

Women in the Hispanic and Latino

community didn't want to drive

together, hang out together, walk the

streets together. It was just crazy. And

it makes me question, like, where is this

coming from?

This blog post came up. It was

from a Sherry Graff, and it had a

lot of racial

negativities versus Hispanics.

I think it was from a racial website of

some sorts that was posted on a blog.

Yeah, that somehow somebody found...

Apparently during her high school years,

she had written a story about getting in

a fight with some Latina girls

and her and her father being proud. And I

think she said something about being

proud about her her race, but we

didn't know where it came from or who

wrote it.

It was something that was in the

investigation that needed to be answered

pretty quick.

I'm assuming, did you write the blog?No.

How did the blog get written or posted

under your name?Do you have any idea?No,

I have no idea.

Prior to all this stuff, have you guys

ever seen that blog before?Have you ever

heard of it?You just want to refer to it,

right?The first thing I asked her, what

the heck is this?She said a mistake just

like back then, although there was a

picture, and I didn't.

What is all this about?

Have you and Sherry ever talked about

that before at this moment?Yeah, there's

a lot there's a lot to unpack in that

area. So, let's go all the way

back. So we get together in

2006, end of

2006. And I want to

say that I came across that in

2007.

I remember being, What the heck is this?

Like it was... and she very

quickly was like no I didn't write it

they were just somebody was trying to

play like a mean joke on me and

it just didn't make sense to me what do

you mean like I was the class clown of

my high school like I get jokes

okay but somebody's sitting there and

writing up this negative article

um ha ha

jokes on you like I just don't even

understand it doesn't make sense to meAnd

there was so many events in the story

that you could, well, this didn't happen.

Her parents never owned a pizza place.

There's no medical records of this

happening and this happening.

I was like, there's no way that she wrote

that. Somebody's posing as her. She's

just, she's not a racist person because I

had never experienced that. She

dated men that

were of Hispanic descent

andSo it'd be it was really hard for me

to believe that she was a racist.

She reached out to a lawyer to get it

taken off. And again, this is 2007.

Do you remember what lawyer you went

through to try to get that cleaned up?I

think that's what I'm trying to remember

for you guys. If you gave

me like a list of lawyers in writing, I

might be able to pick his name out

because it was-- it seems like it was

ethnic.

Your response was she absolutely didn't

do it, but I think she didn't, but

there's no proof to say she did or she

didn't. I don't remember because this

is-- Well, people are trying to spin in

the office that this is the catalyst for

what happened to you. For a while, I

think there was some doubt that these two

Hispanic women who allegedly abducted her

existed. Now that police have released

these sketches, do you think that they

totally believeThat these two

Hispanic women are to blame. Well, I

don't know that they believe it, but I

think they're probably at a stage of the

investigation where they have to go with

what she's providing them until they have

a reason to suspect. otherwise. What was

the motive here?When you think of all the

potential boxes you could check off,

nothing really lines up as to why she

would be released and why anyone would go

to that length to abduct her, only to

release her three weeks later. You mean

the branding on the shoulder. Right, the

branding on the shoulder. You see, how

could someone wouldn't do that to

themselves, et cetera, right?So So many

mysteries here. My

husband wants more answers I can't give

him. The detectives want more

answers I can't give them.

I started building walls and then pushing

my curiosity aside so I could heal my

body and focus on rebuilding

myself into the mother and wife my family

needed me to be.

David, law enforcement is concerned about

possible inconsistencies in Sherry

Papini's story. She has claimed that she

was abducted and held solely by the women

that you saw in those sketches. Police

say that they found DNA on her clothes

and her shackles. So let me take your

socks first. We're going to

release you to the the custody of the of

the police or our way to exam the

evidentiary exam. I just want to

go on my own. Let's just start with

day one. Let's start with today and go

backwards.

I did the last night, so obviously they

came very-- There was a problem. There

was a problem. They kept arguing. They

were yelling. They were yelling at each

other. I don't know why. I just-- Just

two women in Spanish. Yes, in and out of

Spanish. The younger one said I needed

medicine. They were yelling and throwing

things around and yelling a lot.

What happened after that gunshot?

Our brains are hardwired to create

stories, theories.

You heard a gunshot, you said. Yeah, it

did. I didn't think she was on that

letter.

It was dark, and it was cold,

and it smelled like it had just rained.

It was really windy. And that's what

she clicked, and then she said, Get out.

Yes, she said, Get out. I just fell

out of the car. It was near I-5 because

I ran all through the freeway. Correct. I

screamed until the blood came out.

From 2017 to 2020,

all of the evidence was now being

reviewed again.

Sherry's clothing was being analyzed.

Eventually, the unknown DNA on Sherry's

clothing came back to a match.

DNA hit, identified a potential suspect.
