pick the husky puppy no way i see the

golden retriever maybe he'll adopt both

oh hey lassie enjoying the show are you

when it comes to sheer entertainment

value nothing beats the adoption there a

bunch of adorable little puppies all

looking for homes

this is better than a movie well in that

case enjoy the show just try to stay out

of sight and out of trouble

guys maybe we shouldn't just be watching

maybe we should actually pitch in and

help you know like classy does but how

they already have plenty of people

inside the fair well then maybe all we

have to do is keep them there all right

come on guys nobody leaves this fair

until they've adopted a puppy

you know

this way

what's your name this is olive say hi

me too do you know what kind of dog you

i want a dog just like her

hey the kids got taste lassie is

definitely a very special dog

come on ollie i think lassie wants to

help you pick out one of your own i

can't believe he's talking about

this you just slipped out they're

heading to their car without a puppy

quick we have to stop them

wow

hi little guy are you all right he is

now let's take him inside my mom can

look him over and make sure he's okay

put the little guy over on that

examination table and let's get a good

look at him

look how cute he is dad i think i'll

call him buddy you want to keep him up

we'll see honey

look buddy here is adorable and i

clearly appreciate what he did back

there it's just i was really hoping to

get a dog that could help me look after

olive maybe protect her i mean i know

he's just a little pup but well it's

hard to imagine buddy growing up to be

anything like lassie

i know what you mean but when we first

got her it was hard to imagine lassie

growing up to be anything like classy

believe it or not she was every bit as

tiny and scared as buddy here wasn't she

zoey no way lassie was worse it's true i

remember because it was the summer when

mountain did you find lassie at a puppy

zoe found lassie all right but it wasn't

at any fair no it definitely wasn't i'll

wildfires were raging through the valley

it was like the whole world was burning

up around us

the series of fires continue to burn out

evacuation orders are now issued for

hanson windsor and parts of essex county

just reaching the roadblock now without

the word we're going to need all the

zoe stay in the car oh but dad you just

said you needed all the volunteers you

can get look i'm a volunteer i don't

have the time to argue with you zoe just

promise me you'll stay in the car okay

come on promise me zoe say the words

fine i promise

hi

my son and i just moved here from

hamilton city we're trying to reach our

new house that's in the safe zone ma'am

but you're gonna have to detour back

along this access road right here

as you can see the fire spread all the

way back there northwest about 500

meters

huh

hello

is there anyone there

hello

okay i'm coming but you won't bite me

huh

you're even more scared than i am aren't

you little guy

let's get you out of there

oh you're a mess

oh well that's an improvement

don't little guy wait please

stop stop please

come on it's okay

you're safe now little guy you're safe

with me

no it's okay that's my dad come on

little guy you better come with me

zoe

it's okay dad i'm here zoe zoey what did

i tell you i said to stay in the truck i

irresponsible things what were you

dad i'm really sorry but i had to

look sorry i don't uh

i just had to dad i'm sorry

come on let's get you home both of you

well mom what's the story

let's hear it sarah how is he well

despite everything this little puppy's

been through i'd say that she is in

perfect health

so you're a girl now all you need is a

name right girl how about missy no

molly

beatrix

gg

i'll just call her girl until i can

think of a name plus we need to get

puppy food chew toys not tonight zoey

you need to get some sleep

but we can keep her right mom

zoey listen that puppy is physically in

perfect health but emotionally she

suffered some pretty serious trauma

you see how terrified and timid she is

the world is just one big scary place to

her right now it might be more than she

and she might need someone to help her

someone who's more experienced more

i can do it you'll see i can help her i

know i can please you have to let me try

if it turns out to be more than you can

handle we'll have to find her another

home with people who know how to

properly train and take care of dogs

like her but she can stay here with us

for now

temporarily

thanks dad thanks mom i can help her i

just know it

uh

oh

come on let's go for a walk

mom i'm taking the puppy for a walk

what am i going to name you

now that's kinda weird

tasha no you don't look like natasha

ginger

that was close

thanks my name's zoe by the way no

problem i'm harvey

wait you better not touch me i think i

just faceplanted into a patch of poison

don't panic i'll look up the cure uh

okay but i don't think the cure is going

huh what do you mean why is it too late

no it's just none of this is poison ivy

oh right does that make sense

sorry zoe i'm kind of new around here

yeah harvey i can kind of tell

so that was you i saw yesterday in the

yep and that was you i saw sneaking out

yeah well that's kind of a long story my

dad's the park ranger is that why you

know so much about poison ivy and stuff

i tried to research all indigenous plant

and wildlife before we moved here

no i learned all about poison ivy after

i rolled around in some back in first

grade you can't find out everything from

books well sure you can that's what's so

great about them they can teach you

except maybe how to recognize poison ivy

fine but maybe anything else you want to

know anything

okay my puppy here has some serious fear

issues she's booked by everything and i

need to help her get over it are books

really going to solve that come on let's

okay girl it's cool my mom works here

i've crossed reference books on animal

psychology the prevailing theory seems

to be that the only way dogs or people

can truly overcome past trauma is by

directly confronting the source of it

again face to face but how do they get

the courage to even do that i guess

that's the catch they only get the

well that doesn't seem fair

don't move girl stay

okay girl it's just a horn

oh

see that's not so bad is it look i think

according to this we need to confront

the real root of what's causing these

fears the thing that started it all

do we even know what that is yeah we do

and more importantly we know where it is

see the winds have died down today we

still have hotshot crews in zones four

but it looks like they've got the fire

you mind if i take a copy i want to show

harvey around try to train the puppy a

little i want to make sure we stay clear

from any fire zones

hmm

okay

be careful out there do you know me dad

come on let's do this wait let's do what

it's simple all we need to do is take

her out near one of the fire zones

excuse me he said it yourself we have to

get down to the root of the problem

whoa whoa that's not exactly what i had

look the wind is calm and the hot spots

are all listed as contained that doesn't

mean it's 100

nothing is 100

safe

i'd say that this is you know

safe-ish

oh look my parents aren't going to let

me keep her unless i can help her get

over this i have to try if you want to

stay here i totally understand

fine i'll do it for her and for you too

i mean i can't let you go out there all

great then it's settled let's get a move

bathsheba you can't call her bathsheba

that's a terrible name for a dog who

what's wrong with the chiva everything

you give her a name like that you're

going to traumatize her even more fine

can you come up with a better name

anything would be better the real

challenge would be coming out with

something worse

whoa what was that

mountain falcons they usually don't fly

so low

zoe what would happen if the wind

suddenly changed what do you mean

birds sometimes fly low to avoid rapidly

dropping pressure at higher altitudes

i hate to break it to you professor but

i don't feel any change at all

but the dropping pressure combined with

the heat generated by the fires could

create sudden and unpredictable

accelerating downdraft currents

you know something harvey you read way

too much seriously we need to get you

just watch watch the very tops of the

smoke columns if i'm right the shift is

going to start at higher altitudes and

quickly work its way down to the ground

look

but there are fire teams down there if

those hot spots suddenly flare up they

could get cut off and trapped in the

we need to head back to town so we can

it'll be too late by then our only

chance of warning them is if we keep

going keep going you mean like towards

the fire there's a fire tower just over

the next peak we can radio them from

but shouldn't we be letting someone else

do this

it's okay i'm sorry girl i know you're

not ready for this but you just have to

trust me come on

this is fire tower 13 hot shot leader

repeat fire tower 13 to hot shot leader

expect sudden wind changes and gusts

within the next 20 minutes advise all

teams to pull out immediately who is

this how old are you this is some kind

of joke look if you don't believe me

just check the top of the smoke column

yourself do it now

please

uh roger

roger that all teams evacuate the hot

zones immediately repeat everyone pull

out now

uh

over bye

you heard the man let's get out of here

get back to the fire tower try to radio

zoey wait snowy

zoey

hello this is harvey smith speaking we

have an emergency here do you copy hello

do you receive me mayday

you
