But no star shines brighter

in their lives than Mia,

a close friend of
17 years to Camryn.

She's a single mother,
so Mia was always there.

whatever that meant.

like a second mom to Milo.

Mia is just an angel.
She's a bright light.

to be teaming up today

with Camryn Manheim

I know a lot about law.

And then that's the problem

because I actually will
give them my advice. [laughs]

And while Camryn
is busy shooting

Law & Order in New York,
and Milo splits his time

between being a Disney star
and going to college,

when these two are together,
they seem like best friends.

You guys seem so close
and so amazing

'cause I think sometimes,
you know, kids

go through the teenage years,
and, you know,

there's that tension.
Do you guys--

Hey, we went
through that for sure.

You know, I always joke like,

"My mom's an Emmy Award
winning actress."

I used to have her help me
do self-tapes in my room

when I was auditioning
for stuff.

She would give me
amazing advice.

And I'd be like, "Mom,
you don't know what you're
talking about, okay?"

-[laughter]
-"Trust me.

Like, I know. I'm 13."

[Drew] But there is an
unofficial third member

to this family,
and that's Mia.

The woman who, for 17 years,
helped Camryn,

a working single mom,
raised Milo.

[Milo]
She's an incredible person.

She was teaching
at my pre-school

and was always so involved,

and just full of love
and light,

and just cared so much

about all the families
that were there.

[Camryn] The Manheims,

we've always been
there for her.

When she's trying to
fill up paperwork

'cause she was trying
to buy this house,

my realtor helped her.

And we flagged things
that could've been an issue.

And I met the inspector.
I came over.

-I met with the inspector...
-Oh, wow.

and asked a lot of questions,

'cause we wanted this
to be so perfect for her.

You'll see,
her kitchen is extremely

undone and unfinished.
But she's so happy.

She loves it so much
'cause I would say to her,

"Hey, Mia. We need to update
this a little."

She would never ask
for anything.

How much does Mia know?
Like, what does she know?

I don't think
she knows anything.

-We haven't said anything.
-[Drew] But we--

-Yeah, yeah, yeah.

She knows we're coming over
to say goodbye to her

because tomorrow,
she is going home

to take care of her family
because her aunt just died.

-So they're helping...

to sell the house
and get everything ready,

and all of her finances.

And then there's
gonna be a funeral.

And so, we asked if we could
just, you know, swing by

and say goodbye
and give her a hug

'cause she's gonna be gone.

I told her that we were
coming to visit her.

And I texted her before
and asked what she was doing.

She told me she was working
in her back room.

this is what we're gonna do.

I'm gonna knock on the door,
if she's not right here,

I'm gonna have you run
into the kitchen.

And then I'm gonna get...

She's usually in her back
room, at the office, okay?

because she really has been

a second mother to me

and I'm an only child.

She's a single mother.

So Mia was always there
to be there for me,

whatever that meant.

She watched me grow up.

And you know just
as much about me

-as my mom does really.

You know, there's been times
when I've been sick,

and everyone has really hectic
and crazy lives.

I needed someone to help me.

She would be,
"Ms. Camryn, I'm coming."

And I love Ms. Camryn.
Like, she...

"Ms. Camryn."
You can't stop her.

I lean on her when I am
really frustrated.

And she's a great
person to talk to.

She always has
a beautiful perspective

on the world and on people.

She just gives, gives, gives,

and she's doesn't
take anything,

which is why we sometimes

-gotta take the initiative.

It's unbelievable. This is...

It's incredible.

The moment I know them,

it's like my life
turned the other way.

To be able to do this
while she's gone

and surprise her,

So we had to do it this way.

I don't actually understand
how she can function in this.

She has dinner parties
every Friday night.

Not only she's just cooking
for herself and her family,

probably for 20 people.

She doesn't have somewhere
to put stuff down.

And I just feel like
the whole kitchen

-is so closed in.

My dream would be
to get rid of this.

-And open it up,

so when you walk
in the front door,

beautiful massive...

It's a nice space,
just really poorly designed.

Mia lives with
her boyfriend, Ramon.

And I think having a peninsula
with just a couple stools,

so they could talk to
each other in the morning

when they're cooking
would be great.

But I really think
Mia needs a dining room table

for the people she cooks for.

I just want places
for her to sit,

and enjoy her friends
and her family.

And, you know,
eat her beautiful food.

Something I saw about this
washer-dryer situation

actually is there's
just a tube

that runs through
the wall outside,

where all the soapy water
goes just in a puddle.

-Wait. So what's going on?
-[Milo] I gotta show you this.

It's pretty insane.

Go outside. Look at this,
like, pipe thing

that just comes
out of the wall,

-and just... I know.
-[Drew] Wait.

-[Milo] From the washer...
-[Jonathan]
That's the soapy water.

[Milo] And it just makes
a puddle right here.

-That is ridiculous.

We're gonna have to do
something about that.

It looks like this back area

where the laundry is
was a porch

that was closed in,
and not closed in very well.

Can we do something
with this room

to make it more functional?

-Like, maybe some cabinets?
-[Jonathan] Absolutely.

move out into the door.

-[Jonathan] It's blocking
the window.

I feel like if we
could pull this off

and transform
the kitchen's face,

it will open
so many doors for Mia.

It just feels kinda
like dark and dingy.

Let's get natural light
pouring through here.

Let's open up the sidelines.

Let's make this
a statement kitchen.

We'll kick this one off
with a kitchen

to dining room open concept

and lose
the ineffective archway,

to give Mia the sidelines
she's always wanted.

New engineered
hardwood floors

will require less maintenance
for Mia

than traditional hardwood.

I'll improve the function
and flow in the kitchen

by losing both tiny fridges,

and instead add
one large fridge.

That gives us room
to add a new range

and statement hood,
flanked by cabinets,

topped with marble
countertops and backsplash

that'll keep the space
light and bright.

Shelving in front
of the window

will provide
additional storage

while still letting
the light through.

The sink and dishwasher

will live under
the opposite window

to give Mia
the creature comforts

that will allow her
more time with family

and less time cleaning.

A new peninsula flexes
as additional prep space

and a casual dining spot,

while a more
formal dining table

gives Mia the perfect place
to gather with friends

and family for a good meal.

Finally, we'll make
much better use

of that laundry room space

by adding a stacked
washer-dryer

and a stylish tile floor.

While a new window
and pocket door

will let the light
flow through,

but not the sounds
of the new appliances.

It is a lot.

Laundry room, kitchen,

dining area, flooring.

How long is she gone for?

She's gone for three
and a half weeks.

Three weeks, yeah.
Three and a half.

Mia has a lot of weight
on her shoulders right now,

supporting the family
back in Mexico.

I wanna take all
that pressure off.

I want it to be so
when she comes home,

everything is done
and everything is beautiful.

The reason that this surprise
is so special is because...

and a super proud mom,
but to be honest, Milo,

I feel so grateful
that I have a son

who would do something

that we have to try and do

in three and a half weeks.

[Jonathan] With so little time
to get so much done,

we need to make the most
out of every single day.

So we have added weekends
into our build schedule

that'll allow to
finish up the demo,

get the rough-in
plumbing done,

and with proper drainage

under Mia's laundry room.

Today, framing is underway

and we are installing
a 10-foot beam

that allows us
to open up the kitchen

to the living room.

[Jonathan]
And I'm with Camryn and Milo.

Between the two of you,
who would you say

is more opinionated

to talk about finishes
that Mia will love?

what I experience every day.

I have very, like, distinct,

detail-oriented mind
for finishes.

So I do have opinions.

Mia has, you know,

seen a couple
of remodels I've done.

I did a remodel
of my kitchen.

cabinets, flooring?

And she's like, "You know,
you have wonderful taste."

-I think cabinets first...

-because I believe

they will tell the story
of everything else.

We don't have to go
matchy-matchy,

so my thought was that maybe
we looked to do something

where we break up
our uppers and lowers

and do two different colors.

in a small house, you wanna
keep things light,

but I understand you have a
lot more experience than I do,

The next big decision,

which is the largest
surface area,

would be the flooring.

We talked about
transitioning to a tile

in the laundry area.

Sometimes people
make a laundry room

-feel like an afterthought...

but sometimes this
is a little too bold.

I mean, no offense,

but I'm not a fan
of either of these.

Next, the flooring team
is tagging in.

Camryn wants light and bright
and sophisticated for Mia

and these engineered floors,
they checked all the boxes,

plus they're scratch
and stain resistant.

With that finish, the cabinet
team is in the kitchen

installing the base units
and the new peninsula.

Instead of doing everything

the same color
in this kitchen,

we're installing
dark cabinets and dark stone

over on the side
and that's just gonna add

a little bit more dimension

to make this kitchen
more dynamic.

[Milo] Okay.

I'm relieved that Camryn
likes the darker cabinets

because if she didn't,

well, she probably
wouldn't be a fan

of the black marble slab
we chose for the sink wall.

[Drew] Yeah, but it's gorgeous

and it'll contrast
so wonderfully

with the white Carrara marble

that we have everywhere else.

Milo and I are out back
grinding the stone

just to make sure
it's a perfect fit.

I made a design choice today.

I chose the color
of the floating shelves.

And while it may not seem

like the most important aspect
of the house,

it was important to me.

of her comfort zone.

to go with panel-ready

for the fridge
and dishwasher.

Panel-ready appliances
are great options

in small kitchens like Mia's

because they can help create
a seamless look

that makes the space
feel larger

and less cluttered.

While we finish the panels

on the progress

of the custom dining table

that Camryn and Milo
wanted for Mia.

in custom woodwork
and metal fabrication.

They've been working
on the metal base

for the stone top we had cut.

This is gonna be perfect.
It's not too big.

It's not too bulky
for the space.

get around it.

next steps

for the engraving Camryn
and Milo wanna see the top.

Actually, Camryn wrote

the first part of the line

and then Milo wrote

The idea is to engrave
Milo and Camryn's

actual handwriting
into the dolomite table top

and fill the engraving
with an epoxy

that looks like brass
or with real brass inlay.

We're just trying
to play with maybe doing

like an engraving style
or we wanna use

a real brass that's solid

or if we're gonna be using
something more like

this powdered brass.

[Drew] That didn't even look
like brass.

Yeah, it's kind
of a dull finish.

It doesn't really pop like
I was thinking it was going.

[David] So this is...
This is the epoxy

that we talked about
just as an option.

And then this is just engraved

obviously with nothing in it.

I think it need to stand out
a little bit more.

To be honest, the epoxy
just isn't delivering

that shine and that wow factor
that we were looking for.

So it looks like we need to go
with the solid brass inlay.

It's gonna bring that
brighter luster

when you have that solid brass

versus that epoxy brass.

I got one other thing
