In this lesson, I'd like to take some time to look at something called the ribbon chart.

Now you're going to see that this is very close to what an area chart is.

But a difference is, is that it allows us to be able to rank the items that have been displayed.

So let's have a look and see how this works.

Yes, I'm going to just delete this current visualization.

And if we go across to our visualizations, you'll see that our ribbon chart is over here.

So I'm going to select the ribbon chart and I'm going to pop it in here.

Let's make it nice and big as we have the other ones so we can see.

Now you'll see that you get your x axis, you y axis, your legend again.

So in this case, what we're going to be working with is we're going to be looking again at our ordered

data because we're still interested to know how things change over time.

So your ribbon chart is still about trend analysis.

It's still about understanding how things change over time in the y axis.

We're going to be using our sales figure again.

And then, well, actually, just out of interest, let's have a look and see what's happened here.

So currently on our x axis, it's got our time and you can see then we've got our different dates being

displayed and then we've got our y axis of some of cells.

What the system is created is actually a column graph at the moment.

So it's just showing us for each day how much sales we had on that day.

So let's just use our drill up again and you'll see this is our monthly view, but I'm actually going

to go to the quarterly view.

So now you can see for each quarter how much sales are there.

But what we're going to use is we're going to use the legend, we're going to pop our product category

into the legend.

Now you can see that the view of the graph changes quite substantially.

So we're going to try and explain what is happening here.

So what happens with the ribbon graph is it actually ranks the items.

So now when I've added the product category and you can see at the topic of the product category, it's

now showing the item that had the highest sales on the top.

So if we were to look at this quarter over here, you can see that computers actually had the highest

amount of sales.

So showing for 2,012.1 computers had the highest amount of sales.

If we go down over here, it's shown that cameras and camcorders was the second highest.

Third highest was the TV and video.

So basically it's taking only items and it's ranking them.

Then what it does is it create ribbons now that connect these.

So if we go over here, you can see that you've got cameras and camcorders and then it moves over here.

But then if we go to this one over here, you can see the cameras and camcorders actually becomes the

highest.

So it's actually on top.

Whereas in this case, computers now becomes the second highest.

So basically it's showing me how things change over time with the ranking.

If we go between them.

What it actually shows is how much things have changed.

So in this case, it's show me 20 1241, showing me the sales for the quarter one and then the quarter

two sales.

It showed me the change that we had that we had, and including the percentage and also the ranking

change that happened.

So you can actually put your mask between these and it will actually show those views.

So this is quite useful when you want to see how the ranking of items has changed over time.

Now what you will find is if you go to your formatting that you do get the ability to actually format

these ribbons.

You can see firstly here you do get the ability to change the colors of the different items that we're

working with.

Let's say we don't particularly like the cameras and camcorders a bit of a dark colour.

You want to go for a lighter colour?

There we go.

That changes it quite substantially with the computers as well.

Let's try a different colour with that one.

There we go.

Can use different colours.

You can also reverse the stack order.

So that would just mean that the item with the lowest would then be on top and the item with the highest

would now be at the bottom.

You can now see at the top you've got those items of that were very small that had the smallest amount.

You can change that.

Also, do you want to connect a colour?

If you turn that off, you can see that there's no longer the ribbons being connected in the colours.

You can just pop that back on.

And I think from a pattern point of view this becomes easier to understand.

Also, you can decide on the transparency of this, and even if you wanted a border, just to show them

a little bit more closely, you can change your transparency if you wanted to.

And change that.

We also get to change the spacing.

So if you want spacing between the different items.

Can create that.

So as I said, this is quite a useful graph if you want to look at a trend analysis, but also have

your ranking that been shown as well at the time.
