In this lesson, we're going to be looking at how we create dashboards within Power BI service.

Now, this may get a little bit confusing because you may be looking at this report at the moment and

going, Isn't this a dashboard?

It's got key metrics, it's got key information, it's got the key summaries of the information that

I want to see.

And that would be right.

It would be a sort of dashboard that you may present.

However, it's got different terminologies in the pub, your service.

So when we talk about reports, reports normally tend to be something that you can view on a larger

screen.

So you could look at this over your laptop.

However, if you were trying to view this report on your phone and may be a problem because your phone

has got a much smaller screen size.

So what Microsoft did was when they were designing the pub, your service was to differentiate between

a dashboard and a report and mostly to help with some of the mobile technologies so that when you're

viewing information on your phone, you may be able to view key components of your report in a way that

would be quite easy for your phone to work with.

So in the next lesson, we're going to be looking at mobile reports in a little bit more detail.

But in this one, we're going to start off by just creating our first dashboard.

And what you do with the dashboard is you actually take components and you actually pin them into your

dashboard.

So you'll see at the moment that I've put my cursor onto a pin visual option.

So where you see this icon, this allows you now to pin that into a dashboard.

In this case.

Also, please note that you, if you've got any filters on it, will take the filters into the dashboard

as well.

So the filtered data will actually go to the dashboard.

But let's show an example of this.

So we're going to start with pin visual.

I'm going to click on that and you'll see that it will come up with an option and it says, Where do

I want to send this to?

Now I do have an existing dashboard that was actually created when we bought the data set into the pub

by service right at the beginning of the course.

But we're not going to do that.

We're actually going to create our own dashboard and we're going to call it our sales dashboard.

So we're going to include that.

So we're going to say that we want our sales dashboard, we're going to pin that in there.

And you can see now that we can go to the dashboard and and it's been pinned and we can also look at

the mobile layout.

As I said, the next lesson we're going to be looking at mobile and a bit more detail, but let's just

go ahead and pin a few more visualizations in here.

So let's include our total profit in this case.

Now it is going to be into an existing dashboard.

We're going to put it into our sales dashboard.

So we're going to accept that.

Let's put our trend graph in.

So again, we've got to open visual here.

So we're going to pin that in existing dashboard, pin that in there.

Again, let's use this also our column graph and pin that in.

So you'll see now that we've got a couple of pins that we've done.

So if we go back to our workspace, go back to the my workspace, what you'll now see that is in your

all or your content is that you've now got the sales dashboard that has been created.

Let me click on that.

This will now open.

And what it does is it now shows you each of those visualizations as just its own visualization.

Now, please note, when you're pinning visualizations into a dashboard, you can actually pin visualizations

from different reports.

So it doesn't have to be all from one report.

You could have different reports and then actually pin those in there.

So what you can do with this now is you can actually resize these if you want.

By the way, if you click on it, you actually go straight back to your report, which is a little annoying.

I keep doing that.

But over there, there we go.

What I wanted to show you is you can actually resize these if you wanted to.

Resize the size doesn't always go to where you want it to go.

Oh, there we go.

That's one option.

So we've now got these elements, as I say, into our dashboard, and it's been put into its own dashboard.

Now, one of the reasons, as I say, is for our mobile layout.

So in the next day, so we're going to be looking at that in a little bit more detail.

What I do want to look at while we care, though, is that we do get some additional functionality that

you can use within your your service.

So if we go to our total sales and you click on the three ellipses, you will see that a set of options

will be presented to you.

So we do have abilities to be able to add comments and as we said before, be able to put this into

teams, copy the visual as an image, go to the report itself.

However, the one that I wanted to focus on, there's a couple that I want to focus on, but the first

one I want to focus on is manage alerts.

So when you got these card elements, you can actually create alerts for these.

So when you say manage alert can add alert rule.

And what you can decide is that if this goes above or below a specific threshold, then a alert will

be generated.

And you can also say how often do you want to be notified?

So you can say I'm at most every 24 hours or at most an hour.

So this will now send an email to you if your system goes above or below those thresholds.

So that's the first thing you can do.

You can actually create alerts, but please note it is normally only on these card visualizations that

you can do it.

The next part that I wanted to speak a little bit about was the ability to be able to create insights.

So Microsoft has been using artificial intelligence pattern recognition systems.

It's basically been working a lot on the fact of trying to use artificial intelligence to assist with

data analysis.

So if you click one of these cards or even there we go, I've just gone back to it again.

Let's let's get back to our sales dashboard.

If you go even to one of these here, you'll see that you can also view the insights on a specific visualization.

So you can view the insights for a whole report, or you could do it for just one component or one visualization.

So if we go to view insights, you'll now see that it will now look at what the information that is

behind this card.

And you can see now that it's searching for insights.

And what it does is it gives you a visualization and it then gives you a description of what it has

found.

So basically it's saying this account that store accounts for the majority of sales, no discount is

noticed to be more sales.

The computers and camcorders, cameras and camcorders have noticeably more sales.

So basically it's trying to go through this, do data analysis and then export inside to you.

I would suggest that try this with your own data.

You may find that it's still quite in development, probably got a bit of work to do, but this is really

where they're trying to take things as to support your data analysis is being able to give you these

these insights.

So we're going to just exit focus mode on that one.

And as I say, you also you'll find these options.

You can give insights on this one as well.

So if we go to view insights, get insights there and again, now you'll see that.

It will generate these insights for us to look at.

Can actually do this if you go back to report as well.

So if we go back to the my workspace, go back to our sales report, you will see that there is a get

insights for the report itself.

So on that it will now look at the entire report and look to generate insights.

So there we go.

We've now got some insights that have been created so you can see recent trends on some cells.

Deep trend.

Some options that it has found.

As I said just there, you can experiment with that.

See?

See what you can find.
