Welcome to this lesson.

In this lesson, we're now going to discuss the matrix visualization.

So we've seen that how the table visualization works.

And what you're going to see is that the other visualizations work in a very similar manner.

So once we know how one visualization works, we can take the learnings and we can actually apply them

to other areas as we start using the other visualizations.

So what I'm going to do is I'm actually just going to remove this product category table.

Easiest way of doing it is just select it and press the delete key.

Or you can go to these three ellipses and you can actually then just use the remove option and that

would also remove it.

So what we're going to do is we're going to use this table, so I'm going to make it a little bit wider.

Let's just remove the some of profit just so we have our manufacturing or some of sales.

Now, let's say, for example, here, I wanted to see what is my manufacturer and my channel and for

my sales.

So if we were to take our channel and we were to drop it into this columns, you'll see that a thicker

bar actually appears and it tells me where I'm going to drop this field.

So when I drop it now, it's now off to the sum of sales.

Now I can go and I can also widen my different columns.

So if I select the wide, you'll see that there we go.

That will actually produce a wider width for my columns.

Now, this may not be the easiest table to read because you've got your manufacturer, you've got your

summer sales and then your channel.

You may want to then have your channel after your manufacturer.

So that's no problem.

All you do is you just click on your channel and you can drag and drop it.

And now again you'll see that you've got the thicker line and where you drop it off to the manufacturer,

it will now move.

So now we have the manufacturer, the channel and the sales.

However, reading this may not be that easy.

You may want to know what is my total for the manufacturer.

So you've got your A datum corp phone manufacturer.

You would want to know what is the total here?

So what we need is a different visualization.

So what we're going to do is we're also going to delete this table and let's have a look at the matrix

visualization.

So press delete on that and we're going to go across and you'll see that the matrix visualization is

right next to the table are pretty easy to spot.

It's just got a little bit of blue colors on the cells, just makes it easier to see.

So I'm going to select that and again, it's going to create a placeholder for us, make this a little

bit larger and you'll see though, that what we've got here is different wells that we can do.

So each one of these is actually called the well.

So when we had the previous one, we had columns and it just was just one well that we could use here.

We've got three wells, we've got rows, columns and values.

So basically wells are where we're going to put our fields into to give us the results and the visualization.

So let's look at that table we were looking at now.

So let's say we've got a manufacturer again, but this time we're going to put in to our rows and we

can see we get a nice listing of our different manufacturers.

Let's go to our channel now.

Let's pop in in the columns.

Now you'll see that my channels have actually gone across in my columns.

That's perfect.

Also, let's just use our sales here, right?

So you can now see we've got a nice little table.

And what we've got is for each of the manufacturers, I can now see each of the different channels,

I can see my totals, and for each of the channels I can also see on the columns.

Now what the totals for those are.

So nice little report giving me quite a bit of detail.

What we can also do is we can create a nested hierarchy.

What that means is we can take a field and we can just place it underneath another field.

So again, if I pick up my channel, you can see that I can drag and drop it.

And once I go into my manufacturer again, you'll see that the thicker bar appears.

It means I can now drop it in there.

And now I have my manufacturer on my panel.

So you'll see that each of the manufacturers now has a little expand button.

So when we click on this, we'll see that each time I click on one of those, it now expands that manufacturer

to show me all of the channels within that manufacturer.

Now, the other part that you may notice here is that you've also got these icons at the top.

So we have a drill up button, drill down button.

You'll also see that we can move to the next hierarchy and we can also expand.

So let's have a quick look at those.

So what I'm going to do here is I'm just going to drill up and you're going to see all those expansions

then will be contracted.

So everything is back now collapsed.

So we've got all our manufacturers collapsed.

We're going to move across to this table headed arrow or the two arrows coming down here.

And what it tells you is that that will go to the next level in the high.

So what this does is it just jumps down one level in the hierarchy.

And in this case, what it means is it's going to show us a table, showing us our channel and some

of sales.

So let's see that in action.

It goes with that one.

And you can see now it's jumped down a level in the hierarchy.

We've now got our channel and we've got our summer cells.

So they're pretty simple.

We want to go back up again, can just use a drill up and you see we go straight back up again.

Now, the other icon over here where you've got a single starting point, but then two arrows coming

out of it.

What this will do is this will expand all of your items in this.

So when I click on this, you'll see now we expand everything.

So it's basically showing me for each of the manufacturers now all of the channel values that are available.

So basically this one expands everything.

This one jumps down a level.

Let's go back to this.

Let's just drill back up again.

We've got one last arrow to look at, which is actually our drill down arrow.

Now, what you do here is you actually turn it on.

So once you turn it on, you'll see that the icon changes a little bit.

And that tells me now that that has been turned on.

Now, what it will do is actually it will only drill down on the item you select.

So if I choose fabric, you'll see Now we drill down and we only show a fabric.

Whereas remember when we used the expand before I showed all of the manufacturers, but then also showed

us the expansion for the one you selected.

In this case, though, what it's doing is it's only going to actually show you the drill down on the

manufacturer that you select.

So as I said, once this is on, that's the way it's going to behave until you turn it off.

So if we go to another one, select that.

You'll see it's got the same behavior.

But when you finish working with it, you can turn it off.

And then that turns off that drill down capability.

And you'll see that you can mix and match these.

So you could have your rows and your your, your manufacturing, your channel, and we could still use

our columns.

We could pop, say, our region into our columns, and you can get quite a lot of data into these reports.

We could expand everything on this.

And as you can see, quite a lot of data now that can be calculated and shown in this matrix.

Now, once you've got a matrix that's kind of working for you and you're happy with, I'm just going

to actually just drill this up just so we got less data to look at.

You've also got your formatting and as I said previously, once you get to know the formatting and the

way that it works, it becomes works very similar.

So you see, if we go to General, you still got your property, you still got your titles, you still

got your effects.

So if you wanted to turn on your border, you could come in here, you could do your background.

Let's just say we want a visual border, so we want that dark gray again.

Let's just say you want a bit of rounded pixels, so you'll see that that works exactly the same as

it did with the table.

So once you sort of seeing this, you'll see that those are the same.

And the visual, we do have some differences.

So style presets is still the same.

We could set this to minimal, could get that view.

You could still go into your grid and you can change your grid lines and go into your values.

Same thing can go into column headers.

You can change those, the text and everything.

However, as we go down, you will see that there's some changes now because we get a column subtotals

and row subtotals.

So this differs on the behavior.

So let's just expand this a little bit.

And you can see at the moment that our manufacturer and we get the subtotals being displayed for the

manufacturer and you can actually see that a row subtotals is on column, subtotals is on.

So if you turn your row subtotals off, you can see immediately now that that is changed.

Now you can actually change this and you could set it back to on and you'll see that you do get a bit

of a way of customize this as well.

So when it goes to apply settings to the row level and the row level that you're doing, are we calculating

all of the rows?

Now?

We've got a limited amount of data here, so I'm just going to leave that.

But over here you might want to change your positioning.

For example, you might want to have it at the bottom.

So now you can see that you actually got your total say at the bottom.

So that does change the way that we do things.

And again, if you wanted to, you could change the way that those values are shown and the same works

for your columns as well.

If you got your columns totals on, you can see I've got my totals at the bottom here.

Go to your totals so off and you'll see that the column totals now have been removed.

We've only got it now for the wide world importers and that would change So you can set that back to

on and you can see again if you wanted to you got your labels show you subtotals for that for the column

totals with the different options that you've got.

So these these do take a little bit of playing around as you go into the formatting.

You're going to see that over time as well.

Microsoft does tweak these, does change some of the settings, but a pretty easy to understand and

to experiment with.

I just wanted to highlight those.

Those are pretty useful when you're working with Matrixes on how you want to show your row and column

subtotal and you'll see also you get your column grand totals as well as to how you want those to be

displayed.

Row Subtotals as well.

And we're back to specific column as well.

You'll remember that we could change a specific column the way the values were shown, the display units.

So all of that is still consistent from the table itself.

And then as we move down, you'll remember that we had cell elements.

You are icon, image heights, things like that, that you may be not using that often.

So as you can see, a couple that you can play around with in the formatting here.

Now, one that I do want to point out is also this last icon and you select that.

And when you go to the table and you go to the Matrix, you're going to see that it has no option.

When we get into our graphs a little bit later, we're going to see that we start to get some analytic

options that we can use there, some quite powerful ones for us to to play with.

But if you clicked on that and you've seen there's nothing there for tables and for Matrix, that's

correct.

You won't get it.

Now, also other things like cards that we're still going to get to you.

What we will see there will be no analytics, but in graphs we do get them.
