Welcome to the lesson.

In this lesson, what I'd like to do is just give you a little bit of an update of what Microsoft have

been doing with the Power BI desktop user interface.

Now a lot of updates are always happening with Power BI desktop.

So what I'd like to show you is some of them that you may be seeing at the moment within your own screen.

Now if we currently look at my screen, it's very much what you're seeing in the course at the moment.

We've got our standard set of data, we've got our tables, we've got all of our fields over here,

we've got our visualizations, we've got our list of fields and we've also got our formatting.

So basically this is exactly as to what you're seeing in the course at the moment.

Maybe some of the colors may be a little bit different.

Maybe on the ribbon you might see 1 or 2 differences.

However, Microsoft have been experimenting with a totally new way of formatting your visuals, which

is really going to change how things happen.

Now, some of you may be booting this up into Power BI desktop and you may be seeing the screen.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going to jump across.

We're going to see how you set up this new user interface and also how we turn it off.

Because for the rest of this course, we're going to be sticking with the standard user interface for

now.

Okay.

So what we need to do is we actually go across, we go to our file and you'll see that we have a set

of options and settings.

Now, later on in the course, we're going to talk about this a little bit more detail, but it's something

that you can definitely have a look at yourself.

Now, when you go into options, you're going to see there's a lot of options.

And this is really why it's not something that we really take a lot of time on because most of the defaults

that you just work perfectly and we don't actually really need to change anything.

It's only if you want to go into this in more detail that you would play around with it.

Now, one of the big things that Microsoft do do is they work with preview features.

So they come along, they come up with new ideas.

Some of these ideas are great ideas and they actually implement them into the product.

Sometimes they preview things and they don't actually make it into the product.

Now what's happening at the moment is that we actually have a list of preview features at the moment,

and one of them is called Your on object interaction.

Now you can see that mine has currently been set to off.

So I'm going to actually turn this on so that we can see what the effect is.

I'm going to turn off the new card visual as well.

So I'm basically turning off all my preview features for the course so that we can see things as they

are kind of in standard.

But in this case, what we're going to do is we're going to turn on the on object interaction.

Now you're going to see that when I select okay, on this, it's going to ask me to restart my Power

bi desktop.

So it just needs to reload it.

Okay, so let's click on Okay, we've set that to on, we're going to click on okay.

And you can see that it tells me that the feature requires a restart.

So we're going to click okay on that.

And what we're going to do is we're going to quickly just restart our Power BI desktop.

Okay.

Right.

So we're back and we've now restarted our Power BI desktop and we're going to see things have changed

a little bit.

So on our right hand side, we've still got our data pane, so you can see we've got our list of data.

We can open this up, expand it.

We've still got a list of fields.

We've also got our filters.

But what you are going to see is we're now missing all formatting.

However, at the top you're going to see on our home ribbon, you're going to see that we now have this

option called insert.

This now has a list of all of our different visualizations that we have access to.

So basically what we've done, instead of having access to the visualizations over in this area, they've

now moved on to this area.

So this basically still allows us just to create our visualizations like we have before.

So if I wanted to, I can click on my table and you can see it's got a little bit of a different view

to this.

So when I click on this and I drag it straight away, you're going to notice that we now have this option

called Build the Visual.

So we are now going to do formatting differently when this visualization method is actually brought

into power.

BI Desktop.

I'm going to run through some examples just now, but the main thing that I'd like to point out at this

point is that for the rest of the course, we're actually not using the preview feature.

Now what we will do is that when this becomes generally available is we will then redo the course and

we'll bring this as the standard method of formatting.

However, if you are working with this and you want to now use this as your standard method of formatting,

you don't want to turn the preview feature off.

I just wanted to show you a setting that will allow you to follow the course.

Now what you do is you actually just go into your view and when you go into view, you're going to see

that there is a number of different options to say, We want to show different panes.

And if you go to putting format on, you will see.

Then we go back to the traditional method of having our format here.

So when I click on this now and let's just populate this, let's go back, you see also the other option

I've got over here now is I've got two ways of changing between my data and I've got my formatting.

Okay.

So just to point that out, so let's just populate this.

So let's say we now want to put our manufacturer and we also want to put our sales in here, right?

So we're building our table like you've just seen in the previous lessons.

And you can see now that if I go to my formatting, it now brings up a list of all my formatting with

my visual and my properties.

So you're going to see that this is a standard way that we do it in the course basically is to have

this pane using the format options.

However, what you are going to notice is that with this new way of being able to do your formatting,

it does give you different ways of building a visual.

So one of them that you're going to see is that the columns are now over here in the Add data.

So instead of the columns being across on this side where we used to just drag them across, they're

now currently sitting in this builder visual.

Also if you want to change the visualization so you want to change it from a table to something else,

you would now click on this and you would then be able to change the visualization the way that you

would want it.

So that's just one way of doing it.

So you can see it is a little bit different.

Please note that this is currently a preview feature though, so it's experimental.

It is going through a lot of changes currently.

So even when you working with it, you may find that it's a bit different.

So that's one of the reasons I would suggest for the course is that you actually turn the preview feature

off.

So just to show you how we do that, again, I'm going to go back to my file.

I'm going to go back to my options.

I'm going to now go back into my preview features.

So within my options, just go down and preview features and I'm actually going to turn this off the

on object interaction and I'm going to click okay again, It's going to ask me to require a restart

on this and we'll do that.

We'll do a restart and in the next lesson you're going to see that we go back to the traditional user

interface.

However, as I say, if Microsoft do implement this as generally available, we will update the rest

of the lesson files just to cover how we work with this.

But I wanted to go through with this because it is quite important.

A number of you may be seeing this as your method of choosing visualizations, so it will just hopefully

help you with the course.
