All language subtitles for 003 Table Styles and Formatting_en

In this lesson, I'd like to speak a bit more about our formatting and styling options.

Now, what we're going to find is that there's actually a lot of formatting options that you can do.

So I'm not going to try and cover every option.

I'm going to leave you to experiment with them.

But what I want to do is just maybe highlight a few key ones just in this lesson, right?

So we're going to go back to our manufacturer table.

And what I want to do is just click in the white space.

Just make sure that there's no filters in play.

And you can see also the total of muscles is run 55 million.

Once you see that figure, then you know that there's normally no filters that are actually being used

at the moment.

Okay, so we've got no filters.

We just got our normal table.

Now, as we've already noted, that when you're building your table, your first icon over here is about

the fields that you're using to create the table.

So currently we've got three fields.

We've got a manufacturer of some of sales and some of profit.

Those are the three fields that have been used populate this.

If you go to the next icon, you'll see that it now allows you to format your visual.

Now, when it comes to formatting your visual, normally there is two options that you get.

You get a general option and a visual option.

So in this case, we're going to go start with the general option.

We're just going to review some of the options that you get here.

First one is around your properties.

This is about your height, your width, whether you want to lock the aspect ratio or not.

Normally, you would probably use your mouse, but if you want absolute precision, then it's a good

idea to come in here and then you can actually put your own values in there and make sure it's exactly

what you want.

And what you'll see is once you open the properties, that you also get other options.

Like, for example, here we got the positioning of this and there's even some advanced options as well

that you could use as well.

You'll see that there's a title so you can add any title while you can add a title to any of the visualizations.

In this case, though, actually let's add a title.

Let's just put a quick title on there.

So we're going to say that the title is on and we're just going to call this sales by manufacturer.

So we'll pop that in there and then you'll see that you do get some default types of headings that you

could use.

So you can have those set up.

We'll talk about that a bit later on in the course, setting up some defaults that you can use if you

wanted to, if you wanted to change the font or you wanted to change the size.

Very easy to do.

You wanted to use bold one of the different text color.

So we had a white text color on this and we change the background and let's say we use a bit of a blue

color, a bit of a darker blue, something like that.

Put it in the middle.

And there we go.

You're probably quite familiar with this type of formatting from other Microsoft products.

Really works in the same way.

If you want to just bring these down a little bit and just close those, just makes it easier.

You do get some effects.

So if you wanted to say have a different background color, for example, on this.

So for example, you wanted a light gray.

Put a light gray color in there.

Also, you could change the amount of transparency that you're using.

Or have zero transparency.

So again, there is a lot of different options.

I'm going to go back to using white as my background color.

Also, do you want a border on And in this case, let's say we do want a border.

I'm going to actually use a dark gray for this.

And let's say we've got a 15 pixel rounded corner.

So I'm going to pop that on.

So you see, now that we've actually got quite a nice looking sort of border.

And often using borders is quite nice for your users, just so that they know where the boundaries are

for the visualization that they're looking at.

Let's just go back to that and just remember, just click the visualization.

You can just go back to your formatting and go back into general.

And basically we were in the effects.

So we got the visual border on, I'm not going to put shadows on normally.

It's not a great idea when you're doing your dashboards and your reports have things like Shadows on

may look great on your screen, but when people are looking at it through a projector or looking at

a printed output of it or using it on a tablet or even small smaller screens like a cell phone, it

can be hard to see.

So it'll be up to you.

But I would suggest not really using things like shadows.

Let's jump across onto the visual side so the visuals allows us to be able to have some style presets.

We did see this in the public service.

So for example, if I put minimal C, it changes the style quite a bit.

And you also then get the ability to say change how you want your grid lines.

Do you want vertical grid lines, horizontal grid land?

Let's put vertical grid lines on can see it now puts those on again.

You can have borders around this can decide how you would want to values.

So say for example you wanted to board your values to be a little bit smaller, to make the font size

smaller or bigger things of text color.

If you wanted alternating rows, you could actually have an alternating background if you wanted a soft

grey, for example, as an alternating background.

Remember we did the column headers in the power our service.

So again, if you wanted to change this, put a background color on there, then you could put that

on again, maybe make that a bit bold.

LUDDEN It's in the middle, if you wanted to.

And you get some additional options as well.

Do you want your sides with to be on totals as well?

If you wanted to change this, maybe make it the same color there.

So as you can see, there's quite a lot of options that you can can apply here, can actually even go

into specific columns.

What you would want to do with each of the series, how you would want those values to be shown.

And the one that I wanted to point out here was that remember when I was saying about the formatting

and I said, when you clicked on the field, you could do the default formatting and you could change

how that was to be displayed.

But at any time you can come into this values, which is under your specific column, and you could

also say how you want the display units to be shown.

So if you wanted to change this, let's say for example, you wanted to share this in millions and you

wanted two decimal points, let's put a two in there.

Then you'll see now that the formatting has changed quite substantially in how that has been done.

And with the table you can come into this at any point and just select that.

So just remember specific column and your values and you could change that.

I'm going to set it back to none and we're going to keep it back to zero.

But I did want to show you that you can override the default that you've created.

And then you do get additional options such as cell elements, your URL, icons, image hearts and things

like that as well, which are obviously used in specific situations where you would be using images,

say, in your tables.

So as I say, quite a lot of formatting options that you can play around with.

The next part that I wanted to talk about, though, was that if you came up with a formatting that

you really liked for your table, question is how can you actually now just apply it to another table?

So we got the second table here, so no formatting has been done for me to go back through this now

and to do all those steps that I've just done, it just seems like a little bit of hard work.

So what we do can do is you can do like you can in other Microsoft products and do a format painter.

So this is a really nice feature.

If I select the visualization, I go across to my format painter over here, select the format painter,

come across to this visualization.

I just click on that.

You'll now see that it's now applied all of that formatting.

Now obviously I hasn't got the title because we haven't turned the title on for this table, so you

would still need to go and do the titles, but it is a nice way if you find it a specific format that

you like for a visualization that you can use for other visualization.

So as I said with this section, this is something that you're really going to experiment with.

With the formatting can spend a lot of time on formatting to be honest, trying different colors, different

approaches, seeing what works.

But we will conclude the lesson there.
