- So, we are back on the set of UNIT

for quite a big day here in the
Whoniverse

because this is the opening scene of
episode seven,

but because we're filming seven and
eight at the same time,

this is basically the start of the end
of the series.

So there's a real fun atmosphere on
set.

NCUTI:
- This is it.

- This is it.
- This is it, yeah.

- And you're very close now to a long
time

on a beach somewhere.
- I am.

- It's also really hot.

Cos it's June, it's sweaty.

You can probably hear that fan in the
background.

People are stripping layers off.

- Darling, it's very hot and sweaty in
here. It's too much.

- STEFFAN LAUGHS

So it's the start of the end, then, I
guess, in a weird way.

How do you feel about that?

- It's exciting. It's exciting to get
to the finale

because it wraps up the whole season.

Obviously, it's like the most
heightened action,

but, like, you gain all the answers
that you've been

asking questions for throughout the
whole season.

- DOCTOR:
- What? What is it? What?

- Right on cue.

- KATE:
- Susan Triad, IT genius.

And today she's releasing her software

free of charge worldwide, a gift from
S Triad Technology.

- It's exciting to get into this
moment where, like...

The climax. It's the climax.

Don't you see?

It is an anagram.

S Triad spells...

..TARDIS.

- Quite, like, an ensemble cast for
this one, isn't it?

Is that fun?
- Yeah. No, it's very fun.

It's very fun having everyone in,
because obviously

it's normally just me and Millie. And
so, like...

- Just the two of you. Yeah.
- It's just the two of us.

- When we get a gang in, it's very
lively.

- I hope every time we come here,

there'll be revolving staff and new
people and new faces

and old familiar faces.

In about ten years' time, the whole
place will be packed

with recurring actors piling up on all
the desks.

So that's the plan.

- The ensemble is a mix of new
characters

and familiar faces.

We last saw Rose Noble, played by
Yasmin Finney,

in the 60th anniversary specials.

- I want to go home.

- Yeah.

I know that feeling.

- The last time we were here on this
set,

it was a different Doctor.
- Yes.

- This time, of course, it is Ncuti,

and you know each other anyway. What's
it been like

to work together?
- It's been really fab.

- Yeah.
- Because it's my first time

seeing him as the Doctor, and I'm
shocked, I love it.

I think it's fab. And...

- Is it weird seeing him as the
Doctor?

Because you're used to him as Ncuti

and now he's the Doctor.
- I always knew

he was, like... Even in... You know,

when I met him for the first time,

I knew he'd be, like, something big.
Like, it's just obvious.

He's so talented and he's so vibrant.

And, yeah, I'm just really blessed

to be a part of his world.

- The last time we saw Kate
Lethbridge-Stewart

was in 73 Yards.
- Go, go, go.

Do not talk to her.

Do not look her in the eyes. Do not
engage with her

in any way. Just bring her in.

- Jemma's back today!

Jemma was here on my first day of
filming,

and she's back now, and it's fantastic
to have her.

- Positions.

Helipad doors to open.

- Jemma, I'm actually quite jealous of
your fan.

That's very good, isn't it?

- It's always good to have one fan.

- Yeah!

I suppose your episodes do tend to
have

those ensemble moments in it with lots
of different characters.

You can bounce off the other actors or
things.

Do you enjoy that?
- I do. It's lovely.

I'm part of a team. And, I mean,

acting is a team sport anyway.

- Hello. Sorry, I didn't get your

- New to Who is Genesis Lynea.

This is an episode that's a big sort
of ensemble cast.

- Yeah.
- There's loads of you.

Do you like those sorts of, you know,
episodes and stuff...

- Yeah.
- ..rather than sometimes it was just
you on your own

or you with one other person?

- Yeah, it does get quite lonely. And
also, you know,

actors, we like to tell stories with
other people, you know?

- Yeah.
- More like a relay race thing.

- Very technical, isn't it, a show
like this?

- I'm not saying being on the Who
set's boring.

That's all I've got.

And there's another new face on the
UNIT set.

A new, but somehow familiar face.

As Unleashed revealed earlier in the
series,

award-winning actor Lenny Rush

was due to voice Baby Eric in Space
Babies.

- Boys, I've got to tell everybody.

Mummy and Daddy are here!

- RUSSELL:
- And so he came along to our
read-through.

He'd been so good as a space baby
voice

that at that read-through,

we kind of sat there and went, "It's a
shame.

"It's a shame it's just a voice

"and we're not going to actually see
Lenny."

So this chance came along to cast a
new scientific adviser

and I was like, "Oh, my God, let's get
Lenny!"

- And who are you?

- Morris Gibbons. UNIT's scientific
adviser,

thank you very much.

- Now, Lenny, last time we met

on a set of Doctor Who...
- Yeah.

- ..there was green, slimy sludge
everywhere.

Snot bogies.
- Yes.

- This time you're a bit more well
turned out.

- Yes.
- Less bogies.
- Complete opposite.

- Complete opposite. How are you
feeling about that?

- Yeah, I mean, I'm happy because it
was only

going to be a voice part, and now I'm
properly in the show.

I'm very excited.

- That, Lenny, is why you are the king
of taking notes.

- Well, thank you.
- Nice one. Well done.

- Thank you.

- So, you know, when they said,

"Listen, we want you to come back..."

- Yeah.
- "But for you to come back,

"it means that you can't... You're not
going to be

"voicing that stuff you've already
done..."

What was that emotion like? Was it...
What did you feel?

- I think being in the show is a
better experience.

- Yeah.
- But Mum...

Mum told me in the worst possible way.

She come in and she said,

"Lenny, they've cut your role from
Doctor Who."

- I'm like, "What? What?"

And then she went, "They got you a
bigger part!"

I was like, "Oh!" But, yeah, I'm very
happy.

- Morris Gibbons?

- Yes, Doc?

- So, tell me about your new
character, then,

your latest Doctor Who character.
- Yeah.

He's Morris Gibbons and he's a genius.

- Yeah.
- A 13-year-old genius.

So the complete opposite of me,
basically.

- Oh, hey, come on, you've done that
one before, Lenny.

That's a good line.
- Yeah. I have said that one before.

- Yes, come on.
- Yeah.

So you're a child genius who loves the

I tell you what, you've inspired me

to go and get a set.

They put all fancy lights on it,

- Long-time Whovians will know that
Russell T Davies

is the master of the teaser subplot -

a storyline that he will seed
surreptitiously

over many episodes, with most of us
not even noticing.

And then it will reach a climactic
finale

and viewers will turn around and be
like,

"How did I not notice that?"

When Russell rebooted Doctor Who in
2005,

the long-game tease was Bad Wolf...

- The Big Bad Wolf.

- ..a phrase that companion Rose Tyler

saw appearing throughout the series.

ROSE:
- I keep hearing those words
everywhere we go.

Bad Wolf.

- It even appeared in Welsh.

Blaidd Drwg. Bad Wolf.

In the series finale, The Parting Of
The Ways,

it turns out that Bad Wolf is Rose
herself,

and that she's been sending herself

warning messages through time and
space.

- I am the Bad Wolf.

I create myself.

I take the words.

I scatter them in time and space.

A message to lead myself here.

- And throughout this series,
Russell's been at it again.

Back in 2023, in The Giggle, Donna
Noble asks Mel Bush...

- Mel, is this static or dynamic?

- Dynamic. We're using Triad.

- "We're using Triad" -

the first hint of the Triad plotline
unfolding now.

Then, in The Church On Ruby Road,

look at the advert on the bus

that Ruby gets off with her Christmas
shopping.

He's a sneaky, cheeky one, is RTD.

But the biggest clue to the mystery
beginning to unfold

in The Legend Of Ruby Sunday is this
person -

Susan Triad,

played by the fabulously named Susan
Twist.

So, come on, then, cross your heart -

or should that be hearts - and hope to
die,

how many of you noticed that Susan
Twist had appeared

in every single episode of this
series?

Well, the Doctor's cottoned on.

- I need your help.

Everywhere I land, a woman appears.
Look.

- But when exactly has Susan Twist
snuck onto our screens?

Well, she first appeared in Wild Blue
Yonder

as Isaac Newton's housekeeper.

- Well, don't come back

until you've had a very good idea,
sir.

- Cropped up as a Christmas heckler...

- Can you do Gaudete?

- In episode one of this series, she
was a comms officer.

In episode two, a tea lady.

Two cups of tea, my darlings.

Episode three, an ambulance.

Episode four, a hiker.

In episode five, she's Lindy's mum.

Episode six, she was a portrait.

With the final twist

about Susan Twist still to be
revealed,

I sat down with Russell and Susan to
get the lowdown

on the highlights so far.

Russell, I suppose the obvious first
question is to you,

which is, where did the idea come
from?

Was this a happy coincidence or was it
a master plan?

- It is not true that I cast Susan
Twist for her name.

- I think it is.

- THEY LAUGH

- But the name helped. Truth is, I've
known Susan

for a long time. I've known of Susan.

Did I actually phone you up and
explain this?

- Yes.
- That was...

..a bit mad, wasn't it?
- I...

Calling me and saying,

"There's all these different people,"
and I...

I was just listening and then I said,

"And are they aware of each other?"

- Yeah.
- And you said, "No, they're not."

- No.
- "They're all independent

"and separate."
- Yeah.

Did that evolve over time? In terms
of, like, what

the roles that Susan was doing and...

- It was. When I first spoke to her,

we hadn't written all of them,

so I didn't know what you were going
to do in every episode...
- Right.

- ..and I didn't exactly know what the
ending was.

I said... We kept on saying, "You'll
have a big part in...

"..at the end."
- Seven and eight, yeah.

- "You'll appear properly in seven and
eight."

- Of all the characters we've had
in...

..you've played in this series,

if I was to push you, Susan - I don't
like

to push you, but...
- Oh, don't ask. Which one?

- ..it's part of my job - which one?

I'm being the hiker today.

We're on the beautiful cliffs just off
Tenby.

Last time I was Mrs Merridew and I...

I don't know, I'm sworn to secrecy.

I loved Susan Triad, of course.

- Let's face it, she's got the most
lines.

- She's the most... Well...

Also...
- That's the one you like best.

- And the nicest frocks.

- THEY LAUGH

- Hi!
- Hello.

- If I may say, I think one of your
favourite performances

is the ambulance, actually.
- Oh!

- Cos that's actually one of those
moments where

you really get the genre.
- ROBOTIC:
- Combat detected.

Patient acquired.

- Which then makes the rest of the
season very interesting

cos the Doctor and Ruby very clearly
see the ambulance.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- So, from that, which is great

for me, because then from that point
onwards

they're going, "Hold on, have I seen
you before?

- Right.
- And yet you can't be

an ambulance on a far-flung planet.
- Right.
- "What?"

- Well, the fans are definitely
picking up on it already,

which is interesting.
- Yes.

They're starting to. There's also a
lot of people not noticing.

- Yeah.
- They're all excited by Anita Dobson,

because at the same time there's a
sleight-of-hand

with Anita Dobson being overtly
mysterious.
- Yes.

- Never seen a TARDIS before?

- It's very much kind of internet-age
storytelling where...

- Was that deliberate?
- Yes.

You just hope it will generate
content.

It's actually... It's kind of proved
to be very popular.

People are really taking off with it.

And, I mean, behind the scenes in our
offices,

people are very interested in this
Susan.

- Oh, I love that storyline. I mean,

I love the part of it where she plays

a different character every episode.

I just think that's such a clever
thing to do,

because it's the character that you
kind of go,

"What did she just say? Anyway..."

Who is that?

- The Duke's late mother.

- NCUTI:
- You spend the whole season being
like,

"Who is this woman that keeps popping
up?

"She's definitely... OK, she's
definitely your mum, Ruby.

"Or she's definitely..."

Like, you just get so many
conspiracies.

- And here's Russell to add to the
mix.

- It's also tapping into, like, a very
old part of Doctor Who,

which is the Doctor's granddaughter,
Susan.

- Grandfather!

- He once had a granddaughter on Earth

who went, left him, played by Carole
Ann Ford.

I mean, that's a huge story

that has barely been mentioned since.

She cropped up in the 20th anniversary
story.

And it's now 41 years later,

and she still hasn't been seen or
mentioned.

So I wanted to do a story

that tapped right back into 1963.

- If you've got a granddaughter, that
means you've got kids.

- DOCTOR:
- Well, not quite.

- Do you think Susan Triad is her?

Mm?

Do you want it to be?

- But at the end of the episode,

Bad Triad appears to nix that theory.

- Did you think I was family, Doctor?

- Or does she? Who is Susan Triad
really?

- The Vlinx has had a glow-up.

- Nice upgrade.

- Hot metal, Doctor.

- There's a real man in there

that's really speaking and talking and
moving.

He was like a robot octopus.
- Yeah.

- I just wondered how he was able to
do that for so long.

- Well, let's go and ask him.

Inside this AI tin can is actor Aidan
Cook,

who's quite literally cooking.

Aidan, it is possibly one of the
hottest days

of the year so far.
- Yeah.

- It's the middle of June and you are
in all black,

looking a bit like a ninja, if you
don't mind me saying.

- Yes. Yeah, yeah.
- And then being...ensconced?

What's the word? I don't know.

- Yeah.
- Stuck in there.

- Yeah.
- How are you feeling?

- Entombed.
- Entombed!
- Entombed is a good word.

- Into the Vlinx.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

- Aidan spends up to 12 hours a day

in his rubber and metal tomb.

- The basic unit underneath all of
that pipework

is a 5mm wet suit.

So I don't know if you've ever got
into a wet suit

on a hot day...
- Yeah.

- ..but the first thing you want to do
when you get into

a wet suit is run into a cold sea.

- Yes.
- Unfortunately,

I don't have a cold sea to run into,

so I just sit there sweating.

- He can't hear, he can't see, he
can't speak.

He can't... It's such a difficult job
to do

and he does it all day. I don't know
how he does it.

- I can move my head, my upper body a
little bit

and my arms, and the rest of it

is completely immobilised.

- Aidan is no stranger to

contorting his body for Doctor Who.

He's played the Crooked Man...

- Well!

Hello again, you old Romeo, you.

- ..a Cyberman...

SCREAMING

..a mummy...

..and a Zygon.

- We want the world.

- SINISTER LAUGH

- He's the most fabulous actor

and the most patient man I have ever
met

in my entire life.

And he never complains

and then comes in with his line
perfectly.

- Analysis confirms life form.

- Although how he manages this is
miraculous.

AIDAN CHUCKLES

From the Abzorbaloff to the Zygons,

the A to Z of Doctor Who villains and
monsters

is fast hurtling towards the 500 mark.

Whatever far-flung part of the
Whoniverse

they've evolved from, a large
percentage of them

share one common DNA trait -
prosthetics.

Susan Triad and Harriet Arbinger's

bony-faced baddies are the latest

to join this legion.

So, for this episode's work
experience,

I've come to Millennium FX

to discover just how they make those
ghastly death masks.

Beth, thank you very much...
- That's OK.

- ..for allowing me into... Is this
your lair? Is that fair?

- Kind of. Like a little...

- Or space?
- A little silicone space,

doing everything, yeah.

- Uh, these are all very cool.

But what are they and what are we
doing?

- So, essentially, we're going to be
making a prosthetic

for Susan Twist.

- Yeah. So how did you end up in a
place

where you're making skull prosthetic
masks for a living?

How does that happen?

- I just really liked film and TV.

- Yeah.
- I found it really interesting

and kind of liked the
behind-the-scenes aspect

of it...
- Yeah.

- ..and how you're able to make these
types of monsters

and creatures on TV. I just found it
fascinating

and really wanted to get into it.

- So, do you...? Is there a course,

how to make monster faces?

- There is a few!

There's surprisingly a few.
- Is that what you did, yeah?

- Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did a degree,
which was really handy.

So you could kind of learn everything
about...

- Ah, OK.
- ..this type of industry.

- Yeah.

- Um, and then managed to kind of get
stuck into work,

which was really exciting.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

So, this is our mould of Susan.
- Yeah.

- You can see that this is a face

and this is basically a scan of her.

Then this has been sculpted on top of
and it's created

this kind of negative.

So that will end up flipping over and
slotting into here.

- Oh, right.

What happens next?
- So, the first thing

before we even start throwing silicone
into it...

- Yeah.
- ..we've got to make sure

the mould is released

and make sure it's got cap plastic on
it.

- Is that cat or cap plastic?

- Cap.
- Cap.

Is it like something you put on your
head?
- Yeah.
- OK.

- And you have this nice cap-plastic
edge

so then it looks like it's part of
her.

- Right.
- So, the cap plastic

is kind of the first step.

I'll show you how to do it first.

Right, I'll put on the extraction just
so there's...

..health and safety.

- FAN WHIRS

- And then now you probably can't hear
anything.

- Sorry, what was that?

BETH LAUGHS

Yeah.

- So you just kind of want to do that

and just spray it over in, like, a
methodical way.

- OK.
- You want to give it a go?

Nice, and then you can turn it around.

- Do you need to do the bottom bit, as
well?

- Yeah, the whole thing.

Yeah, perfect.

- What's next?

- So, the next step is silicone.

That should be all good.

We're going to pick this up and we're
going to give it

a little bit of a rotation. So you
want that silicone

to come round to the edges.

I'm just going to pick this up and pop
it in.

- Yeah.
- Because it's quite heavy.

So I have bolts in the back

just because it makes it a little bit
easier

to try and pick it up.

- So her face slots onto...
- And then that goes right in there.

- ..the mask, which is drawn on the
inside,

and her face is sitting on top of the
drawing of the mask.

- Yes.
- With the silicone

and the cap in the middle.
- Yep.

- The cast is left for 40 minutes to
set,

then has a lick of powder to loosen
it.

So, I'm just whanging this everywhere?
- Mm-hm.

- OK.
- Yeah.

- Oh, yeah, getting there. She is.

It's coming to life.

- OK.
- Hey!

- That looks good.
- Voila.

- That looks really nice.

And then all of this excess flashing
will end up

being trimmed off to,

like, a really nice kind of like half
a centimetre,

and then it's ready to be used on set.

- But before it gets to set, more
masks are produced

and skilfully painted to add deathly
detail.

Then Millennium FX's Rebecca
Butterworth

adds some grisly flourishes.

And finally, it's time for Susan Triad
to scare

the living bejesus out of us all.

- I bring Sutekh's gift

of death.

- Now, I know I keep banging on about
the sets on this show,

but they are amazing.

Every time I sashay down this walkway,

I'm always seeing something new and
immense.

Oh, look, the space babies' spaceship.

Abbey Road Studios.

A Kastarion crater.

An army encampment.

This place is paradise for Whovians.

And for this episode, the Who crew

have built another mind-bending set,

but this time added in-camera VFX.

And to find out how,

welcome to the time window chamber.

RUSSELL:
- The time window chamber is

a great device that UNIT has had
secretly hidden away.

We've never seen UNIT travelling in
time. It's funny,

they've never invested in it,

and we realise through a bit of
dialogue

that the Doctor's always forbidden
them.

- Kate, do you have a time window?

- You expressly told us in the 1970s

UNIT was absolutely forbidden

to experiment with any form of time
technology.

- Do you have a time window?
- Ten floors down.

- It's a means of looking into the
past

without travelling there by TARDIS.

For the Doctor, it's kind of crude.

- This is... This is rough.

- DOCTOR LAUGHS

- Wow. You have lashed this together.

- The Doctor might think this was
lashed together, but actually

the time window chamber

is one of the most complicated sets in
the series.

The urge to pull one of those levers
down...

..is really, really strong.

- I presumed that the time window

would just be lots and lots of green
screen

and a snow machine - as though that's
easy -

but it's such a good design team on
this show

that they kind of wanted to make it
special.

So everyone thought they'd be standing
against green screen,

and actually they're standing there
amongst projections

of Ruby Road with the church that's
visible, and the snow,

and the lamppost appears.

And so I think it's a phenomenal piece
of design.

- The time window chamber comes in two
parts -

a physical set built on stage six

and a surrounding three-sided
projection backdrop,

both dreamt up by production designer
Phil Sims

and his team.

PHIL:
- Russell had written it was this huge
space

with huge technical bits of equipment

that were projecting

an illusion of the time.

The reason the images look the way
they do

is because they're being generated
from a VHS tape.

- A V-H what?

- Video cassette recorders - machines
capable of

recording television sound and
pictures

in the domestic and the industrial
environment.

- Back in the 1980s, when Kate Bush

was first running up that hill, you
could record telly

off one of the three available
channels

onto tapes the size of house bricks.

- On many of the machines, you'll be
able to program

the recorder to switch itself on and
off

to tape your favourite programmes

over the two weeks you're on holiday.

- It was the future.

Once.

- When I saw a VHS tape in the script,

I had a rough idea, um, because of,
like, the older films,

but I've never used one

and I don't know how to use them, to
be honest.

- That's the church.

And there's a couple of trees there.

- The key to it was that the VHS
nature of the image quality,

it meant we didn't need really
high-res LED screens.

We didn't need to have pixel-perfect
background.

We could create a fairly
low-res-looking background

that was beautiful but could be
ghostly.

Although you do need big, powerful
projectors

which need to be overlapped and merged
together

to create one continuous image.

It's a bit like putting four monitors
together on your desktop

and have one big image across the four
of them.

- We did it! We brought it back!

- THEY CHUCKLE

And having gone this far with the set,

what's the most Doctor Who thing you
can do next?

Blow it up.

- OK. We're rolling.

- We're filming the big explosion
scene today.

So this is the big pinnacle

when everything charges up and all the
screens

are going to explode over the Doctor.

So that's what we're just setting up
for at the moment.

There's a little bit with Morris,
who's played by Lenny.

We're going to have some little pyro
sparks,

and I've let him design it on his desk
wherever he wants.

But everything else is all going to be
VFX.

- There's one explosion up above.

There's one actually on my control
panel,

and then there's a load at the bottom.

- It'll be one, two on the console.

- Cool.
- Number three will be

on the floor, and then four, five with
the top one.

- Fire in three, two, one.

- Scared the life out of me at first.

Um, but I'm very, very excited.

And it looks very, very good.

- Come on, then, time window chamber.
