[The Double]

[Episode 11]

How long has Third Lady stayed inside?

It has been all day. She even missed her meals.

She even instructed me not to let anyone bother her.

This silver needle tip is coated with scorpion venom.

Using it as acupuncture can cause hallucinations.

If the person receiving the treatment can't handle it,

they will go completely mad.

I trust you, Miss Situ.

It's useless for you to trust me. You must trust yourself.

If you can't handle the pain,

I won't be able to save you.

I understand.

Why did you betray me?

Oh, no.

She's starting to hallucinate.

Xiao Heng, help me hold her down.

I need to prepare another dose of medicine.

If she starts shaking, call me right away.

All right.

Now you're trying to get close to Jiang Li.

So which one are you planning

to push out?

I'm just trying to help Second Lady Jiang.

Besides,

my marriage with Jiang Ruoyao isn't set in stone yet.

Go back now

and break off your engagement with Jiang Ruoyao.

Only then continue with Jiang Li.

Jiang Li, don't even think about taking him away from me.

I won't lose to you.

Not before, and not tomorrow.

No, we must give her the antidote now.

Don't give up halfway.

She hasn't gone mad from pain.

It's just that her inner feelings have been suppressed for too long.

Do you think she can handle it?

Even if it's a huge challenge, she can handle it.

Shen Yurong!

Do you think no one will know

what you've done?

Heaven sees all. Every evil deed faces retribution.

I won't let you get away in this lifetime.

You can't even keep your place at the School of Integrity.

What can you do against me?

Your wrist is crippled now.

You can't play the qin anymore!

My hands!

We have to stop this now.

If we don't give her the antidote soon, she won't hold on much longer.

Li, look who's in front of you.

Li!

Li.

Jiang Li.

Jiang Li!

Don't bite yourself.

You...

Foolish.

Young Master, did you stay up all night?

It's already morning.

Yes.

Young Master, you've been reading this page all night.

Please remember.

You must watch over Jiang Li so she wins against Jiang Ruoyao.

All right?

If Jiang Li wins, I'll bring you something delicious.

Xu,

do you still want to go even when your hand is injured?

I must attend Jiang Li's music exam.

Later at the competition,

you will surely shine the brightest.

I've taken care of everything for you.

Please don't disappoint me again today.

Yes, Mother.

Why does His Lordship take time like a young lady?

He's taking such a long time to change his clothes.

Do you want to go and check on him?

I killed Xue Fangfei with my own hands.

I buried her myself.

The current Jiang Li is just Jiang Li.

No matter how much she resembles her, she's not Xue Fangfei.

Li, do your best.

I believe in you.

Ladies and gentlemen!

Place your bets. Place your bets.

It's the bet between Grand Chancellor Li's son, Li Lian,

and Grand Chancellor Jiang's daughter, Jiang Li.

Fifty-to-one odds! Fifty-to-one odds!

Second Lady Jiang's team is performing exceptionally well.

Just one match left.

Why haven't the odds changed at all?

It's all about capabilities.

There are not many cases of tables turning.

You must have bet

your whole fortune on Mr. Li

and refuse to suffer losses.

That's right.

Let's see who wins and who loses.

All right.

Go ahead and place your bet.

Decide and place your bets!

I'm placing mine here.

Come and place your bet!

[Jiang Li. Li Lian]

- I'm placing my bet on Mr. Li. - My bet on Mr. Li too.

All right.

Misters, I've taken note of your bets.

All right.

[Jiang Li] I'm placing my bet!

[Entry Exam. Day Four]

They're quite impressive.

Second Lady Jiang is in good form.

What are you looking at?

Look at Second Lady Jiang, she's determined to win today.

Did you see that?

Everyone looks at our motley crew

in a different light now.

Also,

many people regretted

placing their bets on Meng Hongjin.

Today is the final round.

Everyone will be watching you.

You can do it.

Jing,

the motley crew across is watching us.

[Imperial Academy]

Do you think

someone will sabotage us?

[Imperial Academy] With so many people here,

I don't think so.

Candidates, come and draw your lots.

Ninth candidate, Liu Yuzhu.

Tenth candidate, Wang Qingqing.

[Knowledge. Erudite. Dedication. Principle] Eleventh candidate, Jiang Ruoyao.

Twelfth candidate, Jiang Li.

Please proceed with the exam

in the order of the draw.

We will test on qin skills.

There will be five examiners in total.

Apart from me, the other examiners

will be Fairy Jinghong,

Fairy Jinghong?

Wasn't she the top performer at Wangxian Pavilion?

[Knowledge. Erudite. Dedication. Principle] She used to charge a fortune for a song.

I heard Fairy Jinghong retired from Wangxian Pavilion

and now lives a peaceful life.

[Fairy Jinghong] It's unexpected to see her here.

Court musician, Mianju.

[Mianju]

Mianju is a true master.

And quite straightforward.

This year's top scholar, Shen Yurong.

Look, it's the devoted Mr. Shen.

Is Mr. Shen also skilled in qin?

I heard his late wife was a talented qin player.

Next...

Ms. Xiao, the next person hasn't arrived yet.

Should we wait for him?

His action is always unpredictable. It's better if he doesn't show up.

Let's begin.

[Embrace Universal Knowledge. Erudite] [Dedication. Book Principles Insight]

The qin skills assessment starts now.

Ms. Xiao, you seem quite anxious.

Duke Su, Xiao Heng.

[School of Integrity]

- Duke Su. - Duke Su.

[Embrace Universal Knowledge. Erudite] [Dedication. Book Principles Insight]

Please be seated.

They even invited Duke Su.

[School of Integrity] What a big surprise.

In Yan Capital District, his insights are highly valued.

Who wouldn't want him to comment

on music played on qin?

Don't forget how Taohong became popular.

Let the competition begin.

[School of Integrity]

[Imperial Academy]

[Embrace Universal Knowledge. Erudite] [Dedication. Book Principles Insight]

Next candidate, Jiang Ruoyao,

It's "Settling on a Distant Sandbank."

You can recognize it from just one note?

It really is the "Settling on a Distant Sandbank."

It's the most challenging piece.

No one has dared to play it in the assessment before.

Your third sister is truly extraordinary.

The song captures the grand ambitions

and serene spirit of a scholar.

The finger techniques are extremely difficult.

I didn't expect Third Lady Jiang

could actually master it.

It's truly not easy.

Fairy Jinghong,

you gained fame throughout Yan

because of "Settling on a Distant Sandbank," right?

When she said that,

this student

sure resembles you in some ways.

The younger generation truly has potential.

Fairy Jinghong tutored her in private?

[Imperial Academy]

Marvelous. Indeed, marvelous.

Even though Third Lady Jiang is young and inexperienced,

she can play "Settling on a Distant Sandbank,"

capturing the grace of wild geese

and the peaceful mood of a hermit.

When we talk about this piece of music in the future,

we'll no longer be reminded of you,

but Third Lady Jiang.

She played exceptionally well.

[Embrace Universal Knowledge. Erudite] [Dedication. Book Principles Insight]

Twelfth candidate, Jiang Li.

[School of Integrity]

Jiang Li is at a disadvantage in going after Jiang Ruoyao.

Even heaven is on my side.

Heaven?

It could be a human deed too.

[School of Integrity]

Look at this qin.

Do you like it?

Yes.

Father, this qin must be expensive.

We already have another one at home.

Just return this one.

I saved some money

to buy wine.

But after giving it a thought,

I decided to buy a qin for my daughter instead.

You see.

You've repairing and maintaining your old qin for years.

It's time for a new one.

I can't accept this, Father.

This qin is too expensive.

If I knew learning qin can be so costly,

I wouldn't have started learning.

Li, don't say that.

You love playing qin.

Besides, mastering a skill

might bring you

some opportunities someday.

Why isn't she starting yet?

- What is she waiting for? - Why isn't she playing?

Could it be she doesn't know how to play the qin?

Well, that would make sense.

Zhennyu Hall doesn't teach qin.

What's going on?

Be patient.

What is this?

Playing such an unknown tune

is embarrassing.

Can she even play the qin?

[Embrace Universal Knowledge. Erudite] [Dedication. Book Principles Insight]

After such a good performance before,

this one is really hard to listen to.

What piece is this?

I've never heard it before.

She's playing

"Spring Fading into White Pear Blossoms."

When I was traveling over the country,

I heard this song.

It's a folk tune.

It's known for its sad melody, leaving a strong impression.

But how can this compare

to "Settling on a Distant Sandbank"?

It's like comparing the heavens and the earth.

[School of Integrity]

Is this the folk tune you mentioned?

It's the same piece.

But the finger techniques and skills are entirely different.

The sound of your playing the qin

reflects the vastness of the world and the depth of humanity.

It's truly marvelous.

It's as if the music is alive.

[Embrace Universal Knowledge. Erudite] [Dedication. Book Principles Insight]

[School of Integrity]

It delivers such deep helplessness.

This piece sounds so sad

Mr. Shen, why are you sweating so much?

The performance is captivating

and moving.

I am

at a loss for words.

No words can describe it at all.

No compliment can do this piece justice.

This "Spring Fading into White Pear Blossoms"

is different from what I heard before.

Did you compose it differently?

I was moved by the melody

when I first heard it.

So I added my own understanding

during practice.

I hope I didn't make a fool of myself in front of you, Mr. Mianju.

At such a young age,

not only can you play, but you can also compose.

Truly, the younger generation is talented.

[Embrace Universal Knowledge. Erudite] [Dedication. Book Principles Insight]

It's all good now.

- Jiang Li, you're incredible. - Yes, you are.

I may never have heard of the piece you played just now.

But it left me completely spellbound.

You're definitely going to win this time.

Li Lian and his group don't have any chance at all now.

What if they placed their bets

on Jiang Ruoyao?

What?

I was observing them just now.

Li Lian and the rest didn't pay attention to their teammate.

But they were more focused on Jiang Ruoyao.

I think they know

that the only way to beat us is

if Jiang Li outperforms Jiang Ruoyao.

To stop us from taking first place,

they're willing to help Jiang Ruoyao.

Who do you think they've bribed?

Mianju is a music fanatic.

So it's unlikely they could sway him.

Fairy Jinghong is Jiang Ruoyao's teacher.

So she'll naturally be biased.

That leaves the other three.

Jiang Li's piece, "Spring Fading into White Pear Blossoms,"

excels in technique, emotion,

and artistry.

I'm sure all of you agree with me.

While Jiang Li's performance was full of emotion,

[Embrace Universal Knowledge. Erudite] [Dedication. Book Principles Insight]

"Spring Fading into White Pear Blossoms"

[Jiang Li. Mianju] might be too melancholic

for others to fully appreciate.

"Settling on a Distant Sandbank"

is clearer and more expansive.

Music reflects the heart.

I think the latter has a broader meaning.

All right.

I had no idea

there were levels to musical insight until today.

With all due respect,

what you say

is complete nonsense.

Mr. Mianju, since I was asked to judge,

so don't expect me to conform to your views.

Everyone judges differently.

I won't argue with you.

So don't argue with me.

Forget it.

I know you favor your own famous work.

But even without your vote, the result wouldn't change.

Ms. Xiao, don't you agree?

I'll cast my vote

for Jiang Ruoyao.

What? Did I hear that right

or have you lost your mind too?

Jiang Li and Jiang Ruoyao are both your students.

Did someone pay you?

Mr. Mianju, watch your words.

[Knowledge. Erudite. Dedication. Principle] We teach music techniques

to help students perform pieces more richly.

Jiang Li's music is indeed emotionally rich,

but her technique falls short.

Compared

to Jiang Ruoyao's technique, it is more stable and mature.

It's clearly the result of a long diligent practice.

Our school encourages students

to thoroughly master their skills.

So

I vote for Jiang Ruoyao.

Ms. Xiao's words clear up

a long-standing confusion for me.

I've wondered why the School of Integrity

has produced so many average musicians

but no masters.

You...

Duke Su, who will you cast your vote for?

I'm not a qin player, just a qin listener.

I cannot comment on techniques.

I can only give one or two of what I think.

There's only a one-word difference between qin fanatic and love fanatic.

Jiang Li's music captures the essence of passion and sorrow.

Her piece tells the story of a betrayed lover

with a tragic end.

I pity this woman's sorrow

and admire her strength.

[Xiang Heng]

[Jiang Li. Mianju. Xiao Heng With my vote, I wish the qin player

would get her revenge

and a bright future.

Great! As expected of Duke Su.

Finally, someone with the right mind.

Mr. Shen,

the result between both of them is up to you now.

[Shen Yurong]

What are you doing?

Give it to me.

But...

You've done enough for me already.

If I can't even keep the qin you brought with you when we got married,

how can I face anyone?

I won't take the imperial exams anymore.

We can still redeem after selling the qin.

I'm just a woman.

The qin is to past time for me.

You have talents that could shape the world.

Don't waste them on trivial matters.

Passing the exams is your path to greatness.

So don't be foolish, my husband.

But you don't need to go this far

to do this for me.

I've failed my father-in-law's trust in me.

After you become a top scholar, then buy me a good qin.

But...

Go back to your studies.

I'll be home soon.

[Taiji Hall]

They say Mr. Shen is fair and just.

Who do you think has a better chance of winning?

Speaking of which,

I've been to Zhennyu Hall at Qingcheng Mountain.

It's desolate and lonely.

It's a pity that a poor weak woman

was once left alone in the mountains.

I buried her with these hands.

Xue Fangfei is already dead.

Speaking of the betrothal,

it was originally the both of us.

Zhou Yanbang, stop being a flirt.

You have a fiancée now, so don't flirt with others.

Second Lady Jiang was sent away to Zhennyu Hall

when she was young.

She stayed there for ten years.

During those ten years,

she stayed quietly.

But after this battle,

[Whirling Sleeves in the Breeze] her name shook the capital.

It sure is great news.

Congratulations, Grand Chancellor Jiang.

Third Lady?

Third Lady.

Open this door.

Third Lady.

What's going on?

Everyone in the house knows that you're making a fuss here.

Losing a contest is one thing,

but don't lose your integrity.

Third Lady locked herself in the room.

I can't persuade her to come out.

Losing a contest is one thing.

But now there are rumors everywhere saying

that Mr. Zhou wants to break off

the engagement with her.

Leave now.

Yes.

Where did you hear that?

It has been spread among the female nobles.

They say after the qin competition ended,

Mr. Zhou approached Jiang Li

to set up a new engagement.

Ridiculous! You can't just change an engagement like that.

Why didn't you advise her?

Can't she be more mature?

She made such a huge commotion

over some baseless rumors.

Where is her manner?

She's been studying music for so many years.

But she loses to a wild girl from Zhennyu Hall.

Something's not right.

She spent so many years at Zhennyu Hall.

Put aside practicing calligraphy,

those people won't let her learn the qin

and to the point being so good at it.

It's indeed fishy.

Go and find out

where the former Zhennyu Hall's mistress

is locked at now.

Is this about finding out who Jiang Li learned the qin from?

Since she returned, something has felt off to me.

Maybe

she isn't Jiang Li at all.
