The puck is knocked into the corner.

Henderson there, digging for it.

Gets it back to the point again,

and again it's Weasel Wilson winding up with a shot!

He shoots, he scores!

[CROWD CHEERING]

Weasel Wilson has given the Hawks a six to five lead.

The power play paid off for the Waverly Hawks.

They now have a one-goal lead.

[WHISTLE BLOWS]

ANNOUNCER: It's Morrison, winning the draw.

Morrison takes the puck to the blue line.

Randor, trailing on the play.

MacGYVER: Like most kids growing up in Minnesota,

I could skate before I could walk.

So, when my old coach sent a call for help,

I jumped at the chance to come home and coach his team

through the state championship playoffs.

[CROWD SHOUTING]

WOMAN: Let's go, Raiders! Come on!

MacGYVER: The Raiders had fought

through a hard season to find themselves

in this best of three final against the Waverly Hawks.

All I had to do was keep 'em on track.

The hockey was the easy part.

The hard part was the team's key player,

number 17, Derek Kirby.

He was the team's biggest asset, and my biggest problem.

And, as usual, right there at home in the penalty box.

[CROWD DROWNING OUT ANNOUNCER]

ANNOUNCER: Kirby, still in the penalty box,

now only has a few seconds remaining...

[CROWD SHOUTING]

Kirby dashing onto the ice,

and skating over to his wing,

indicating he wants to pass.

Kirby has the puck, and then passes off himself.

Kirby, skating to the blue line.

Takes the pass.

Kirby heading for the end goal.

Turn around, wrap around! Wrap it!

Kirby shoots, he scores!

Yeah!

Yeah, that's my boy!

P.A. ANNOUNCER: Raiders goal scored by number 17, Derek Kirby.

Back only four weeks after the incident in Finland

that led to his expulsion from Team U.S.A.

He's back!

ANNOUNCER: You talk about players that like to perform under pressure...

Leaving the ice for just a moment,

let's meet a familiar face I spotted in the crowd.

One of the top NHL player agents, Bret Thompson.

Bret, is there anybody down there on ice level

who can play in the NHL, has the potential to play?

Well, that kid Kirby seems to know where to put the puck.

He might be just the kind of material the Mustangs are looking for.

He's a good one, that's for sure.

here in the Minnesota State Championship series.

It's a best-of-three.

The play goes behind the net. The Raiders lose possession.

The Hawks have it! Henderson, with the puck,

passing to Wilson in the slot.

Kirby digs into Wilson and gets...

- [WHISTLE BLOWS] - No!

[CROWD BOOING]

...and now Henderson retaliates

with a shove to the back of Kirby...

This is serious.

MacGYVER: Sit down, all of you! Stay put.

On the bench, on the bench!

ANNOUNCER: ...on the bench, as a fight breaks out on the ice.

Pushing and shoving...

Break it up!

Go ahead! That kid's a pistol.

That, he is.

REFEREE: Okay, Kirby, that's it. You're out of here!

Me?! What about him, huh?

You have a lot of trouble finishing a game, don't you, Mr. Olympic?

ANNOUNCER: Key player Derek Kirby

has been ejected from this contest

in an instant replay

of the exact infraction

that got him expelled from Team U.S.A.

[CROWD BOOING]

...what a blow to the Raiders this will be,

with the score tied and less then 30 seconds to play.

Replacement Coach MacGyver doesn't appear happy.

P.A. ANNOUNCER: Raider penalty, number 17,

Kirby, a game misconduct.

[CROWD BOOING]

ANNOUNCER: The Hawks draw the foul play once again

with the score tied at 6 all.

Kirby makes his way to the dressing room.

As the play continues now,

Henderson gets it back to the point,

across to Wilson, back to Henderson.

Henderson winds up with the shot.

Henderson shoots, he scores!

[CROWD CHEERING]

[P.A. ANNOUNCER CALLS GOAL OVER CHEERING CROWD]

PLAYER: All right!

Seven-six, Hawks.

Hawks are number one, Kirby.

These jokers don't know what the game's all about.

Some refs will throw you out of the game,

just for breaking a fingernail.

Yeah, and some will do it

when you try to get away with a dangerous stunt like Derek did.

Mr. Thompson, this is MacGyver.

He's coaching the Raiders for Turk Donner while Turk's laid up.

Bret here is a, uh, he's a player's rep,

in case you didn't know that.

He's trying to set up my boy for the Mustangs.

From the way Derek played tonight...

I'd say he's just the kind of material they're looking for.

you're not gonna get away with it playing for the Raiders.

So what got you turned on to it?

Well, growing up in Minnesota, it's kind of hard not to,

but right there,

that's what did it for me.

It's Turk Donner's gold medal.

Squaw Valley, 1960.

Turk and his team beat the Czechs.

MacGYVER: I was eight years old,

and I can still remember him bringing home that medal.

I couldn't wait to get into high school to play for him.

Yeah.

Coach Donner's the reason I made it onto Team U.S.A.

No, your ability to play the game of hockey is what got you on the team.

The question is, how did you get yourself kicked off the team?

Ooh, no secret there.

The whole country saw it.

That steamroller on Team Finland took me into the boards,

and I gave it back to him.

That's not what I'm talking about.

I want to know what went on in your head.

Derek, you have got the talent.

You've got the speed, you've got the instinct.

You know what it's like to be chosen from 400

of the best players in the country?

I wish I did.

of the Minnesota State College Championship.

Face off is just minutes away here on KLMA.

[CROWD ROARING]

620 AM radio, your voice of hockey.

In the exciting, high-scoring, game one of the series,

the Hawks scored in the final seconds

to beat the Raiders seven to six.

That was just after Raiders' star Derek Kirby was ejected

from the game for an intent to injure penalty.

Kirby's a key factor in keeping the Hawks

from walking off with the championship.

The former Team U.S.A. player has racked out the record

180 minutes of penalties this season,

and yet, still leads in goals with 55.

You know, if Kirby had stuck around in game one,

it might have been a different story.

[WHISTLE]

The puck is dropped to get game two in this best of three series underway.

Raiders take possession and pass it through center ice

...and down the right side.

The all important second game,

and Kirby has come to play in this one, you can tell.

He really wants the puck at every opportunity.

Kirby takes it past to the blue line.

Now heads for the end boards.

This could be the fastest wraparound move from Kirby.

And then he scores!

[APPLAUSE AND CHEERING, BUZZER SOUNDS]

...His lightning speed in game two

to give the Raiders an early one nothing lead!

As I said, Kirby has come to play,

and he used that move where he goes around the net,

and then tucks it in the short side.

Oh, what a beauty that was from Derek Kirby

to give the Raiders a one nothing lead

in this all-important second game of the series.

That's the lift, the psychological lift,

that the Raiders were looking for.

The Raiders' replacement coach, MacGyver,

seems to have really worked wonders with his star center,

or is Kirby trying to earn his ticket to the NHL

by impressing those two Mustang coaches

that are sitting with his dad in the stands.

And now, the Raiders come out of their own zone.

They've got a two on two situation

as they hit the blue line

and shoot the puck in.

Kirby has the puck.

He drives toward the end boards, stops, turns around,

comes back to the point.

Now he's picking up speed, striving towards the net.

Kirby taking a vicious whack from Wilson. Kirby...

[WHISTLE BLOWS]

ANNOUNCER: ...taking a dive on the play.

What's interesting here is that Kirby...

ANNOUNCER: This is most unlike Kirby.

Maybe he's hurt, maybe he's really shaken up.

Kirby is back on his skates.

The clock is stopped with two minutes

and eight seconds remaining in the second period.

The score -- still Raiders, three, Hawks, one.

Two of those Raiders goals coming from Derek Kirby,

who surprisingly enough, has yet

to receive a single penalty in this game.

Way to go, MacGyver!

Wilson, cross-checking, two minutes.

ANNOUNCER: Kirby is happy.

Raiders have the man advantage.

And this is a key face-off just inside the Hawk's blue line.

- [WHISTLE] - Kirby and the Raiders are set.

They lose the face-off, the Hawks get possession.

They play it behind their own net.

...Up the center right right to the stick of Kirby.

He wheels, passes to himself.

What a great move by Derek Kirby!

A bit of a showboating move, but it certainly worked,

as Kirby passes to Malachuk.

Maluchuk... but something's happened.

He's got a man over behind the net.

Malachuk plays him around the boards.

The Raiders still have possession.

Kirby, wheeling and dealing just inside the blue line.

And he still won't pass the puck.

and it cost the Raiders.

The Raiders continue to lead the Hawks

by a score of three to two,

but in the best of three championship series,

they trail one game to nothing...

They get it back to Malachuk.

Malachuk, across to Johnson, Johnson ahead to Kirby.

Kirby spots Randar on the right side...

Randar with a break!

He shoots!

It's wide on the mark.

Kirby goes up to the boards to retrieve the puck

and is hit heavily by Henderson.

There's no love lost between these two players.

But once again, Kirby refuses to retaliate.

He backs away.

That's unusual for the feisty Kirby.

- Bust him one, son! - Most times, he'd sooner fight.

- Let him have it! - He seems a little confused.

Unsure of himself.

Kirby moving in to the hot zone.

He's tripped Henderson.

[CROWD CHATTER DROWNS OUT ANNOUNCER]

A tripping penalty if ever there was one.

Kirby against Henderson.

Henderson moves in to shove Kirby.

Now the gloves are off, the helmets are down on the ice,

these two are going at it...

[GRUNTING]

Henderson is taking a couple of sharp lefts from Kirby, and now...

RADIO ANNOUNCER: We're into the final minute

here in the third and deciding game

of the college championship series at the Kerrisdale Arena,

and a huge goal by Weasel Wilson

for the Hawks has given them a four-three lead.

Their fans can sense victory,

as Kirby is taken in along the boards hard.

Kirby has undergone a lot of rough treatment from

these Hawk players, especially in the third period.

They realize his importance to this Raider team.

The Raiders try to gain control.

Less than 20 seconds to play.

It could be the last chance for the Raiders.

The Hawks would appear to have a lock on this one.

Brandar bringing it down the right side.

Brandar at the blue line, and now the Hawk fans begin to chant.

Only five seconds to play.

Kirby, moving in.

He passes into the slot.

Five seconds, and Johnson ties the score!

Chester Johnson has sent this game into overtime.

P.A. ANNOUNCER: Raider goal scored by number five,

Chester Johnson.

In the last five seconds, Kirby passing to Chester Johnson

and Johnson, with deadly accuracy,

picking his spot.

We are going into overtime for only the third time

in the history of this championship series.

The face-off at center ice.

The Raiders win the face-off and move into the Hawk zone.

Maybe they can end it quickly.

No, the Hawks break it up and come back.

The Hawks moving into the Raider zone now.

A chance for them to wrap it up in overtime.

Kirby steals the puck and slams into the board

behind the Hawks' bench.

Kirby, thrown to the ice.

Get up! Get up!

MAN: Come on, get up!

It's tied at four.

We're in overtime.

Kirby is back on his skates.

He appears a little shaken on the play.

Kirby taking a pass from Morrison

as he crosses the blue line.

The pass goes to Malachuk.

Malachuk fires it around the board

as the Raiders have it behind the net,

they're trying to win this game in overtime.

Kirby calling for it.

Kirby has the puck.

Kirby, back out to the blue line.

The defenseman comes on to try and block the shot.

Kirby fakes the shot.

The defenseman goes around. Kirby moving in.

He's holding on, holding onto the puck.

Is he holding on too long?

Kirby makes the pass.

Johnson is moving into the slot.

Johnson has the puck, lots of time to tee it up.

Johnson with the shot.

He scores!
