- Hey there, I'm Dallas, creator of "The Chosen"
and I want to welcome you to "Christmas With The Chosen,"
our third Christmas special.
Man, this is going to be a fun one.
We have got some beautiful and very unique content
I'm about to introduce
and I am so grateful you're joining us.
Right now I'm standing in our Great Sanhedrin Temple set
here in Texas where we film the majority of our show.
We introduced this location in season three,
you might remember a few of the scenes,
and we have some really big scenes here in season four,
which is coming to theaters in less than two months.
I cannot wait to show it to you.
Now, why am I in here?
What does it have to do with Christmas?
Well, it kind of doesn't have anything to do with Christmas,
and that's the point.
You see, this is the room, or a room like it,
where people assumed the Messiah, the Savior of the world,
would end up as a leader, as a ruler with absolute power,
even an earthly king.
This is where the religious leaders of the Jewish people
in the Great Temple in Jerusalem met
along with the High Priest.
They made and interpreted laws.
They debated theology.
They sought to lead their people closer to God
and ultimately this is where they decided to kill Jesus
who unbeknownst to them was actually their Messiah.
Why didn't they know?
Well, one of the reasons was because
He wasn't born into royalty
or anything resembling religious leadership.
He couldn't have cared less about status
and His birth in a stable reflected that.
Another reason I'm in this room is that
the birth of "The Chosen" is also
somewhat the opposite of a place like this.
Over six years ago on a farm,
20 minutes from my house in Illinois,
I made a short film for my church called "The Shepherd."
It was about the birth of Christ
from the perspective of the shepherds
and everything about our production was humble and small.
We were behind a barn or out in a random field.
We went to a small sheep farm nearby for a few scenes.
One scene was filmed in a cornfield.
It was just a short film
for my church's Christmas Eve service,
and I had no idea that soon it would go viral
and be the catalyst for a record-breaking crowdfund
for season one of "The Chosen,"
that I'd be standing here now.
I also had no idea that in 2021, four years later,
we'd film a special episode of "The Chosen"
called "The Messengers,"
which was the same story of the birth of Christ,
but from the perspective of Mary and Joseph.
Well, a few months ago we decided to try an experiment.
What would it look like if we combined the two short films
into one narrative?
We all figured it'd be clunky,
that it would probably look and feel a little weird
because the two films weren't written
as one continuous piece
and that the differences would keep it from working.
But I won't forget the moment when my wife, Amanda, and I
saw it for the first time and almost wept
with how it came together.
So you'll see that tonight.
Is it perfectly seamless? Of course not.
We didn't originally intend for you to see
what you'll see tonight.
The music, the sets, the equipment, the crews,
the cinematography, basically everything but the director
is different between the two films.
But our team did some meticulous work on this
to try to make it a cohesive
and powerful viewing experience
and I know you'll be impacted and moved
by how it turned out.
We also assembled for you
some of the most popular music performances
from our first two Christmas specials.
These are the ones that rocketed up the music charts
after people saw them,
along with a brand new special performance
from the Andrea Bocelli.
Yes, you're hearing me correctly.
One of the most beautiful voices in history
from a beautiful soul
performed an incredible rendition of "O Holy Night"
for you in Italy.
And after each of our previous Christmas specials,
the monologues written by our "Chosen" co-writer,
Tyler Thompson, have been talked about
and cried over for weeks after by the viewers.
Well, it'll be the same this time around
because we've got two new ones and they are awesome.
Again, thank you for joining us.
I promise this is going to be a special time for you.
Please lean in, take in everything you can
from the truth of these extraordinary songs
and the portrayal of the greatest story ever told
through the eyes of people like us.
And be reminded that the Savior of the world
was born in even humbler circumstances than you and I were.
So as we strive to be more like Jesus and learn His lessons,
let's start with humility.
God bless you and Merry Christmas.

- It all began as a planet of water.
The first two verses of Genesis
describe the world as formless and void,
an empty and shapeless blob shrouded in moisture,
uninhabitable for human life.
God said, "This won't do,"
so He got to work creating light on the first day.
"It's good," He said,
but everything was still covered in water
and there was no air to breathe.
An aqueous vacuum-sealed chaos.
So on the second day, God created an expanse
making space between the water and the heavens.
Something ancient writers first called a canopy,
then later the sky.
And what we now understand to be the atmosphere
encased in a gaseous shield, the ozone layer,
a delicate retainer of protection
that keeps the Sun from incinerating us by day
while retaining just enough of its warmth
to keep us from freezing to death at night.
Nice, but still nothing solid to stand on.
What were we supposed to do? Walk on the water?
Well, two people eventually did, but we'll get to that.
On the third day,
God gathered all the waters into specific places
and caused the dry land to appear, which He named earth.
God called the separation between the earth and water good.
The separated water took many forms, oceans and lakes,
lagoons, glaciers, gulfs, estuaries.
They would mark the division between continents,
hemispheres, and peoples.
Rivers in particular
would draw the borderlines of countries, states,
and even ideologies.
The crossing of which often signaled
a seismic turning point.
Slaves crossing the Ohio River into freedom.
George Washington crossing the Delaware.
Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon.
Rivers symbolize a perforation between existential realities
before and after,
now and next,
the former and yet to be.
And of the aforementioned none more so than this one:
The River Jordan.
If streams could talk, oh, the stories it could tell.
These waters whispered and prefigured
the coming of the Messiah for centuries.
After 40 years of wandering in the desert
in a state of anguished longing,
adversity, and occasional mutiny,
Israel finally crossed the Jordan into the Promise Land.
When the priests carrying
the physical manifestation of God's presence,
the Ark of the Covenant, stepped into it from the bank,
the waters drew back and stood in a heap
so that the entire nation passed through on dry land.
This river knows what Moses, Mary, Joseph,
and the shepherds learned.
That when God enters your midst,
whether in the form of an ark or a burning bush or a baby,
the flow of the trajectory of your life
comes to a screeching, laws-of-nature-defying halt
and no one can explain it.
Well, someone can, but you'd have to meet Him.
And that my friend is more harrowing, exhilarating,
and wonderfully dangerous
than stepping into roaring rushing rapids.
I wish it for you.
You'll survive, I promise,
but you will get swept away.
Perhaps that's what no one was ready for.
Despite humanity's enduring tendency to splinter off,
calcify our opinions of others,
and alienate those whom we deem irredeemable,
this river became a place of change,
healing, and integration.
The Jewish Prophet Elijah told Naaman,
the Syrian Army Commander, a Gentile and a pagan,
to dip in the Jordan seven times to cure him of his leprosy
and it worked.
And yet hundreds of years later,
everyone was shocked and scandalized
when the Messiah ministered to Gentiles
and performed miracles for them that signaled a world
where God's chosen people
are not defined by race or bloodline,
but by faith alone, united as one in Christ.
It was a startling permutation.
And maybe that's why God chose the Jordan
for so many significant events.
Because the difference between a river and a lake is that
rivers are always moving, changing, transforming.
The billions of H2O molecules
contained in a single drop of water
pass by you in a millisecond
and will never be in the same place again.
Before Jesus began His earthly ministry,
His cousin John baptized people in the Jordan and preached,
"Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand."
You could break down, analyze,
and expound forever on any word in that sentence.
Repent, kingdom, Heaven.
But it's the two words at hand
that most reflect the spirit of this season.
In context, it means buckle up,
something new and convulsive is imminent, close in time,
about to happen and things will never be the same.
Like the rippling currents of an ever-changing river,
God is on the move
and that means we must move to make space in our hearts.
Is there room in yours?
As it says in the song, "Let every heart prepare Him room,
let Heaven and nature sing,
Heaven and nature sing."
On the second day,
God separated the heavens from the waters,
but they still sing together in harmony.
The song of a people set free, of a world no longer divided,
of a baptism that symbolizes a bright new beginning.
"Hark!" They sing.
"Glory to the newborn King."

- One way or another, every river eventually meets the sea.
The Jordan River begins at the base of Mount Herman
where the transfiguration took place,
then continues down into the Sea of Galilee
where Jesus walked on water,
told you we'd get there,
empties out from the Galilee to pass by Samaria
where Christ first publicly revealed
His identity as Messiah to the woman at the well,
and then carries on through Judea
where John baptized Jesus in its waters.
And at last meets its final destination here, the Dead Sea.
You ever hear of someone hitting rock bottom?
Well, technically this is it.
The Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth
at 1,296 feet below sea level.
It's also one of the saltiest bodies of water on the planet
at 34% salinity.
For perspective,
the salinity of the Great Salt Lake of Utah is 14%
and the ocean itself is 3.5%.
So yeah, she's salty.
But why call it dead
when so many events in the life of Christ, the Living God,
took place in or along its tributary, the Jordan?
How can so much life flow into death?
The name dead comes from the fact that
no living plants or creatures
can survive in its briny waters.
And yet while nothing can live in the Dead Sea,
ever since biblical times, it has been a famed destination
for restoration and wellness.
Its mineral properties of magnesium, sodium and bromide
are known to soothe the pain of arthritis,
reduce inflammation, and promote healthy blood circulation.
Its mud can treat skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.
Even Cleopatra used it as part of her beauty regimen.
Think of all the paradoxes.
It's called the Dead Sea
but you literally can't become dead by drowning in it
because the density of salination creates natural buoyancy
that forces your body to the surface and you float.
This place is named after death itself
and yet people come here to experience
life-enhancing powers of healing.
Echoes of Christ are everywhere.
This is the world's rock bottom.
And what could be a lower entry into society
than an infant taking His first breath
in a smelly hovel meant to house beasts of burden?
And yet He was royalty of the highest elevation.
Salt in an open wound is a searing pain,
but ultimately cleanses it.
Jesus grew up into a man
who suffered searing pain on the cross,
which ultimately led to the cleansing of our sins.
The Dead Sea is Christmas,
a roiling ocean of contradictions.
Maybe you've felt it too.
The bright festivities of the season bring you joy,
existing side by side with the pang of sorrow
for a loved one who won't be there this year
for the first time, or the 50th.
Resounding carols blast from speakers in every retail store,
radio station and church service
but they feel dissonant, out of step,
with a heaviness in your spirit you can't name, or you can.
Either way it hurts.
Flip to one channel and choirs are belting out,
"Oh, tidings of comfort and joy
and peace on Earth, goodwill to men."
Flip to the next channel and find news that
there is no peace on Earth,
no sign of goodwill among mankind.
This is what it means to be alive,
to stand in the middle of the Jordan
between exile and the Promise Land.
To feel the sting of Dead Sea salt
in the open wound of your soul and of society,
and yet have the courage to believe it all coexists
with the capacity for shalom.
Some would say Christmas marks the beginning of the end.
The beginning of Jesus' life,
which would extend beyond death
in a redemptive arc that ends with a world baptized
by the Shekinah glory and made whole,
a new kingdom where the Prophet Ezekiel foretold that
this Dead Sea will be turned to fresh water,
teeming with every kind of colorful marine life
that darts and flutters and leaps amid its waves.
And in John's revelation,
he writes that an angel showed him
the river of the water of life,
bright as crystal,
flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
There is water everywhere in the new heavens
and the new Earth.
Rivers that do not signify boundaries or borders
or separation or alienation.
Seas that do not represent death or drowning
or sunken ships.
Wherever you are this Christmas,
whether in the fresh pool
of your own version of a Promise Land
or caught in the riptide of salt tears
that won't stop falling from your eyes,
or somewhere in between,
the Living Christ who walked along these very banks
sees you.
That He who was the Word made flesh
in the final sentences of that Holy Word promises,
"Surely I am coming soon."
That no matter what it looks like now,
there will be peace in you and around you, and mercy mild.
God and sinners reconciled.
