a date that will go down in history
as the day that England took on Italy

in the final of the European Championship.

[reporter 2] After the long wait,
England have finally made it to a final,

and it's at home, here in Wembley.

[Chris Whyte] Wembley Stadium is

the most iconic football stadium
on the planet.

It's the home of football, full stop.

[man 1] The importance of Wembley
as a stadium, as a historical place,

as a mythical place
where you have to go once.

[woman] The eyes of the world were
on Wembley.

It was really, really important
that everything was perfect.

Finally, in my lifetime,
England are in a major final.

It's coming home!

[upbeat music playing]

There was this joyous momentum
that the whole country was riding off.

[Ugo] We had a brilliant team,
a young team,

an engaged team, a talented team,

and the nation was swept by it.

All that mattered
was getting in that ground.

They're attacking us.

We were outnumbered.
I didn't feel it. We were outnumbered.

It's the biggest game
in English football for 55 years,

and we're on the verge of a disaster.

How on earth did that happen?

What the fuck?

This was an England team

that was reflective of the country.

that they were young, vibrant,

they were connected
with their communities.

They were a group of people

We had goals in the team
from Sterling and Saka and Harry Kane.

The confidence was so high
that this would be the year.

We'd beaten Germany.
And then you had the semifinal.

that could see them through to the final.

England have reached
their first major final since 1966.

my mates would be like,

Everyone wants to be alive
when their country lifts the trophy.

I was one of the fortunate ones
to be in a position to pay more than £600

to go and watch a football match.

for thousands of pounds.

It had gone beyond expensive.
Like, it was ludicrous.

[fan] I never had tickets to the final,

but there's not a chance
in a million years

that I was watching the Euros final,
that's three hours down the road from me,

at home.

Football has always been
a massive part of my life.

It brings joy, happiness.

When England are playing in
the competitions, everything's enhanced.

It's that excitement
that we're all in it together.

Wow. Do you know what I'm saying?

It's difficult to explain.
You feel... You just feel it.

I had no other thoughts in my head

other than, "I'm not missing this game."

he knows there's
fever-pitch excitement across the country.

[Southgate] When you drive past people
and they're tooting their horns

and their flags

[Keegan] It's hard not to think about
your own experiences supporting England

and all the horrible heartbreak
that's been before.

[crowd cheering]]

[John Motson] England are
out of the World Cup!

West Germany are through to the final

on penalty kicks.

[Keegan] The first major tournament
I remember was Mexico, 1986.

[commentator] Moving away from Hoddle
in the heart of the midfield.

It's hooked back over the top,
and Maradona has scored!

And I remember my mum was quite religious.
We're a Catholic family, and she said,

"Go... go and say a prayer.
You never know. Go and say a prayer."

So I can remember going to the stairs,
kneeling at the bottom of the stairs,

and saying whatever it was,
a "Hail Mary" or an "Our Father."

[commentator] That is why England are
so furious,

'cause Maradona
has punched it in with his left hand.

[Keegan] And I remember
just being distraught.

A lot of me was thinking, "God,

if I could go back to the kid
that was praying on the stairs

and tell him, 'Look, it's all right
because, when you've grown up,

England will be
in a European final at Wembley."

"You'll have a ticket and you'll be there,
and we're gonna win."'

- [male voiceover] This is talkSPORT.

[reporter 3] Gareth Southgate says
he knows the threat Italy poses tonight

at Wembley
as final preparations take place.

[Southgate] The run of form is
phenomenal, really.

I mean, only three draws,
never mind defeats,

out of their last 30 matches.
That's a huge credit to their whole group.

[joyful music playing]

[fan] For me, football is love.
Football is emotions.

Brings people together.

I come from the south of Italy,
a place called Brindisi,

which is in Puglia.
It's the heel of the boot.

I came to live here in London in 1993.

If I think about me and my daughter,

and the fact that
she is half-English and half-Italian,

and I'm proud of that.

But I want her to feel Italian,
to have Italian roots,

and, for me,
football was a way to do that.

I was ready to spend
any money for the final,

and I'm feeling very happy
and proud as well

that I'm giving
this present to Maya, my daughter.

One day, looking back, she can say,

"Oh, I was there with my daddy
at Wembley the day of that final."

[joyful music continues]

[man] I was staying at the Hilton,
which is opposite the stadium,

and as I walk around the corner,
I see the arch,

and straightaway,
it hits home why I'm here,

what I'm about to do.
I'm about to walk into this huge coliseum.

I'm about to deliver this amazing event,
and the excitement is building.

- You feel a little bit giddy.
- [orchestral music playing]

You're tense in such a way that is great

because you know what's on the horizon,

what the grandeur of this day is.

You're not playing on the pitch,

but you're responsible for
the safety side of things, the security.

And it's this magical stadium.

The best stadium in the world.

I told my team, "You know,

you are privileged
that you are on this side of the fence,

delivering this amazing event
that's ahead of you."

"This is more than personal.
This is national."

"We are Wembley Stadium."

"We're ready for this."

[orchestral music crescendoes]

[music fades]

My mum, when she drops me off
at the station for football, she goes,

"Stay out of trouble. Have a good day.
Love you." I go, "Will do, Mum."

[chanting] ♪ Super, Super Jack!
Super, Super Jack! ♪

[Max] Everyone was absolutely buzzing.
You could see it on everyone's face.

People on the train probably
absolutely hated us.

But we didn't care.
We were just there for a good time.

It's a big day.
You dunno when it'll happen again.

[Dan] I'm looking forward to getting
to Wembley. I was prepared to spend

what I earn in a month
on a ticket for that game.

And I thought,
"If I can take £2,000 cash down,

and I can have that
in front of somebody's face,

it would be difficult
for them to... to say, 'No.'"

The tickets were going for
like, a few grand, weren't they?

And I was like, I couldn't pay
a few grand to watch an England game.

I'd rather just go there
for the party, to be honest.

to be English and united.

It was early.
It was like 10:30 in the morning.

You wouldn't think it would be so busy,
but it felt like a big street party.

[security] When I got there, it was like,
"Wow. I'm at a final with England in it,

in Wembley."

It was a happy, happy moment
for everybody.

I'd done a multitude of jobs
but never had worked in a football stadium

or a football game before,
so this was my first time.

I would have preferred to be a fan.

I wanted a ticket,
but we're talking thousands of pounds.

That's not affordable, obviously,
working as a security guard.

You know, we don't have
that luxury, unfortunately.

A Euro 2020 lanyard.

You won't be able
to get one of them again.

[bright music playing]

It's something to keep and to treasure,
to say to my kids later on, "I was there."

"I was there when... when it happened."
Because they might not believe you.

They might say, "You know what?
You're lying, Dad. You're lying."

And I'm not. I'm here.
Here's the proof. I've got something.

If England do win the Euros,
I wanna be there.

I wanna hear the roar.

I wanna run out and see them
pick up the trophy, at least.

See England in the final,
and it's never gonna happen again.

I was in the England camp
with the players,

reporting live on the radio,
day in, day out.

So when the opportunity came around,
it was real pinch-me stuff.

and he had to wake up in the morning,

put on an England kit, and have
the entire nation on his shoulders.

But you definitely felt that

you were in the presence
of some really special people.

I remember being
a bit in awe of Marcus Rashford.

that extra air about him.

during the summer holidays

following a campaign
led by the footballer Marcus Rashford.

[Saunders] Their ability to stand up
for what they believe in

says so much about this team.

They had a mission,
and that was to win the Euros.

But I think the mission
went so far beyond that.

It was to make the country
feel really proud.

[reporter 5] Even if you didn't
have a ticket,

the idea of coming down here to Wembley

and witnessing
this atmosphere, this occasion,

I get why you'd wanna be at Wembley
for this kind of atmosphere.

This is a proper party.

[man] I was the first one there
from Brent Council's team,

and I decided that what I'd do
is take a good walk around all the areas

we're responsible for and get a sense
of how things were, what needed doing.

[banging]

People very clearly

coming off the trains
and the Tube laden with booze.

[Whyte] The off-licenses in the local area
were having a bit of a field day.

But the football match doesn't kick off
until eight o'clock in the evening.

In lockdown,
I found that, a lot of the time,

I was in or on my bed... daily.

[indistinct cheers]

And it completely
sucked the life out of me.

I spent a lot of time... depressed.

To be locked in our houses for so long.

[dramatic music playing]

We're human beings.

We're meant to be outside.

Of course that's gonna cause depression.

The pressure had built up on people,

where they were ready to...

ever so well to get here.

It all leads to Gareth Southgate, for me.

[reporter 7] When you get in
an England squad, they're quality players.

It's about getting the best out of them.

It's a massive decision tonight,
what he'll do.

If he goes three at the back or stays
with four, but we've got to trust him now.

[inspirational music playing]

[fan] For the first couple of hours
of the day, my mind was just distracted.

Just, "Wow. You'll watch England play
at a major tournament final."

"Are we gonna win this
or let it slip again?"

My earliest memory is watching
Michael Owen score for England

and just hearing my dad next to me,

"Play the ball. Play the ball.
What are you doing? Play the ball."

[commentator] Michael Owen.
He's running at the Argentina defense.

- And it's Michael Owen!
- [fans cheering]

My dad was going crazy.
My sister was going crazy.

My mum was shouting at us from
the kitchen, saying, "Get off the sofa."

After that, front of the house,
England flag, every tournament.

Some people, some non-white people
might have driven up our driveway

and thought, "Shit, National Front,"
but it was a family of Asians.

As I've grown older,
I've become more attuned to the fact

that I'm not English,
in some people's opinion.

To a lot of people, that means white.

And therefore, if I'm "not English,"
why am I supporting England?

You know, I was born in the Midlands.
Why the fuck wouldn't I support England?

But when it came to that team,
all of these backgrounds,

and just the togetherness of that squad,

it just felt that it united England.

I'm just excited that I'm going to Wembley

to be part of it.

[fans chanting in the background]

We was on the bollards at Wembley Way,
singing, chanting, and stuff.

Then I see the bus,
and my first thought was,

- "This is my time to shine."
- [playful music playing]

And they was like,
"Yeah," all cheering me. "Get up there!"

People was chucking me drinks,
and I was catching 'em.

Everyone cheered when I was drinkin' 'em,

and if I didn't catch it,
it'd be like, "Oh!"

[playful music intensifies]

There was so many people filming me,
and I just felt like the man.

I was like, "What a feeling this is."

And then I thought,

have their fun now." But I got it going.

[Max] Everyone says,

I go, "Yeah, you've got to be happy.

[Whyte] Myself and my teams
are involved on the ground.

You know,
our business is within the crowd.

The safety of the general public,
both within the stadium

and certainly outside
in the hours leading up to the game,

is really the key priority.

[fans yelling]

I was on Olympic Way.

I'm looking at all of this
getting out of hand.

[fan] This hasn't been great
for you, has it?

[vuvuzela blowing]

There are people
heavily intoxicated already.

Drug use seems to be happening unchecked.

And if we think the behavior's bad now,

The story was becoming
this real scene of carnage and chaos.

Bottles and cans are, sort of,
crashing down all around.

Full bottles of beer,
empty bottles of beer, you know,

with people clearly unaware of,
and uncaring,

about where these bottles might land
and what damage they might cause.

- [suspenseful music playing]

[alarm ringing]

[Whyte] We were having to create
a very impromptu medical station

outside the Brent Civic Centre.

[indistinct chatter]

[Whyte] I've got very vivid memories
of seeing glass injuries.

There's blood and bandages

and people frantically trying
to give people the care that they needed,

and it did resemble a bit of a war zone.

[indistinct chanting]

[chanting continues over televisions]

[man] I'm in the control room,

and we could see fans clearly intoxicated,

putting their own lives in danger.

At that time, there
was limited police presence, essentially.

We needed some support and intervention
to try and control the crowd.

[tense music playing]

[Lewis] This is a match
that we always hoped

England as a country would be involved in,

and it is being totally overshadowed

by far more serious circumstances.

[bursting]

I'm standing there, thinking,
"Where are the police?"

[Whyte] There was a police presence there,
but that was the local police.

The main deployment
was scheduled to arrive at three o'clock.

That was the plan.

The sense was that the pressures
on the day of the final,

as far as the police were concerned,
was likely to be in Central London.

That's what they had seen
through the course of the tournament.

- [tense music continues]
- [all chanting]

So their focus and their preparation,
and their deployment

did have a Central London lens to it.

[glass shatters]

But the reality on the day of the final

was that those pressures
started to emerge within the Wembley area.

[all clamoring]

The big fear was that the ticketless fans

who were causing problems
were now on the doorstep of the stadium,

and you've got more people turning up,
so we needed police support much sooner.

[vuvuzela blowing]

[indistinct chant]

We arrived at Wembley,
and we're leaving the train,

and the station is completely packed,
you know. Packed, packed, packed.

[fans] ♪ One, two, three, four ♪

♪ Harry Maguire... ♪

[Gianluca] We didn't see
any other Italians.

It felt like we were completely
outnumbered and surrounded.

[fans] ♪ You can stick your twirly pasta
Up your arse ♪

♪ Stick your twirly pasta up your arse... ♪

That moment is when I felt,
the first time, in danger.

- [fireworks bursting]
- [eerie music playing]

[woman] When I came out
of Wembley Park myself,

the scene was a scene of devastation.

There's broken traffic lights,
lampposts, trees.

It was just like a bomb had gone off,

and there was just debris everywhere.

[fans chanting]

I've been to Wembley numerous times,
and it was just like...

It was like entering War of the Worlds.
That's the only way I can describe it.

I came out at the steps,
and I was like, "Is this Wembley?"

"This isn't what it looks like
on normal match days."

"What's going on? Because all these people
can't have tickets."

[indistinct chanting]

And a load of fans
are about to come to the game,

and how are they gonna make it through
this huge mass of people?

[clamoring]

[Whyte] The message
got through to the police

that we needed their support sooner,

and they were able to bring teams
on the ground before three o'clock.

The difficulty that we had, of course,
was that a lot of those problems

and bad behaviors
had already become established

and taken hold.

This was a very dense crowd
in a very compact area

that was completely off its face.

[eerie music continues]

Everyone was anxious
for the stadium to open up

and for that pressure to be released

with people going through
and into the stadium.

[intriguing music playing]

The tournament itself
required an outer perimeter.

There were checks
that had to be administered,

so people couldn't just walk up the steps

and present their ticket
at the turnstiles.

[electronic beeping]

At 4:30, the outer security perimeter
had opened up

and allowed people
to start to come through.

[Kevin] We got to the first check
at the bottom of the Olympic Steps.

The person in front of me, he got through.

I remember once he got through,
he had this expression on his face,

and he was, like, celebrating.

Then I heard him talking to his friends.

He was like,
"I can't believe I got through."

And he was showing us that, actually,
he had gotten through with a fake ticket.

The sheer quantity of fans without tickets

meant the number
of stewards and security guards

didn't really have a chance.

[music continues]

[Dan] I was just thinking,
"I am not missing this for the world."

And I just thought, "Right, okay,

I'll go up the left-hand side
of Wembley Way

and just ask everybody,

"Is anyone selling tickets?
Is anyone selling tickets?"

And literally, my...

my statements were falling on deaf ears.

I've come all the way here.

I'm prepared to spend
two, two and a half grand on a ticket

to get into the ground.

And in actual fact, I could end up

not even having
anywhere to watch it at all.

[suspenseful music playing]

[firework whistles]

[Gianluca] Out of nowhere,

I start to see bottles and cans
being thrown over us.

The first one that arrived, it was like,
"Okay, maybe it's just a one-off."

Then, yeah,
we started noticing a few more.

[glass shattering]

It is just me and Maya
surrounded by English fans.

It felt like we were under attack.
They're giving us the finger.

Then, they were quite
aggressive and abusive,

and my only thought
was to protect my daughter.

[suspenseful music continues]

Then we saw a group of Italians.

And straightaway,
they started shouting at us,

"What are you doing? Come, come with us!
Don't be on your own! Come with us!"

They saw my daughter,
and they all surrounded her.

And I put the rucksack, like,
in front of her face and over her head.

- [glass shattering]
- [firework whistling]

[clamoring]

[Gianluca] Then we started
walking together.

And Maya was walking,
head down, like this,

under this protection
that we created for her.

And at that moment, I thought

maybe I was a bit naive
or stupid as a parent

to bring my daughter to... to this match.

[suspenseful music continues]

[firework whistling]

[Gianluca] The police, as soon
as they saw us, they surrounded us.

And then, at this point, we are escorted.

I'm with my father-in-law,
who's, like, 70.

And he's in... he's in good health,
but he's still 70 years old.

And... And it's like,

we got around the corner
to where the steps are,

and it's like, "Wow."

- [clamoring]
- [siren blaring]

Like, "How on earth are we gonna get
through this sea of people?"

Wembley Way is packed
with thousands of ticketless supporters.

There's clearly not enough security there,
there's not enough stewards there,

there's not enough police there,

and they are about to open the turnstiles.

And those people on Wembley Way
without tickets know

that there are 23,000 empty seats

because of COVID restrictions.

When you put all that together,
it's like the perfect storm.

[electronic beeping]

If I was on the ground
and I was a steward,

I would be absolutely terrified.

[music intensifies]

[music fades]

[fan] I told my friend I'm working
at Wembley.

They were like,
"You'll get beat up, mate."

I'm like, "Okay. Yeah, fair enough."
Everyone was telling me the same thing.

"England game. England in the final,
if they lose, you're dead."

I'm like, "Okay. I'm still working it.
It won't stop me from working there."

[fans clamoring]

I'm looking out on Olympic Way.

It became obvious to me, like,
there's so many fans here

that wanna get in that ain't got a ticket.

We were outnumbered.
I didn't feel it. We were outnumbered.

[flares hissing]

It's the biggest day in English football.

To allow fans
that may never get the chance

to see something like this again,

that wanna be at the event...

[inhales deeply]

...you have to take extra care.

[orchestral music playing]

It was really emotional
leaving St George's Park

the last time
before they went off to the final.

It was just a sea of complete
love and support for these boys.

And I think what was nice
was to see it given back

'cause they had given us
all these moments of joy for week on week.

And then it was time for us to show
how much they were appreciated.

[fans applauding]

[Saunders] It really raised the hairs
on the back of your neck.

[music continues]

[fans cheer]

[England player] Wow.
Did that just happen?

[orchestral music crescendoes and stops]

[fans clamoring]

I managed to grab hold of a steward and
just said, "Look, my father-in-law is 70."

"I'm a little bit concerned about him.
We've got tickets."

"Can you let us in, please?"

And fortunately, he waved us through.

And from there,
we went up to the turnstile.

And then,
just before I went to scan my phone,

I thought, "I'll just double-check,
make sure he's behind me,"

and I turn around, and he wasn't there.

There was a young lad,
maybe in his twenties, behind me,

with an England shirt on.

I was like, "What are you doing?"

And he's like,
"Oh come on, mate. I'll give you 20 quid."

And it's like, "My father-in-law
is behind you. He needs to follow me in."

I was like, "Move."

And I'm not a violent person.
I've never started a fight.

And in the end, I had to turn around
and basically threaten him.

I said, "Mate, fuck off."

[frantic music playing]

In football,
lots of people jib into grounds,

which is getting into the ground
when you haven't got a ticket.

But usually, you don't have
these points to get past

before you get to the ground
and you can jib in.

"Let me scope the area out, basically.
Let me see what's around."

I thought if I planned it out properly
and done it at the right time,

I could get into the ground.

I've walked around this corner,
and I just hear loads of people,

"Ah! Rooney! Rooney!"

And I think, "Hey? What's going on here?"

So, after I got a little video in
with Rooney, all gassed,

obviously, he's a United player
and I'm a massive United fan,

I thought, "I wonder
where he's just come from,

if that's a special VIP entrance
or if it's where the players' entrance

or media entrance."
I didn't know, but I just thought,

"I wonder what's up there,
where he's just came from."

So I walked down this alleyway,

and it's opened up into a big space.
To the immediate left of me

were some big steps
that were going up towards the ground.

[suspenseful music playing]

When I got to the top,
there was a crowd of people,

and they were all shouting,
"Are we ready? Are we ready?"

I thought, "I know what they're doing."

[suspenseful music intensifies]

[Boylan] I'm in the control room.
I'm watching the monitors,

and one of my colleagues suddenly shouts,

"Spanish Steps! Spanish Steps! It's gone."

And I've automatically turned
to where he's watching,

and I can see this crowd
punching their way through.

There is a flip away

from antisocial, reckless behavior
to violence.

- [screeching]
- [music intensifies]

[barriers rattling]

[fans and security clamoring]

[woman] Oh fuck.

Oh my God. Oh my God.

And I've wiggled myself into
the middle of this group.

And as we've got to the front, there's
people getting trampled on, and whatnot

and I'm thinking, "Jeez."
And I've stepped over someone

and fell forward, and I've just done,
like, a roly-poly over their bodies

'cause, that way,
I'm not putting any weight

directly onto somebody
and standing on them.

Do you know what I mean?
I just tried to do it the easiest,

softest way possible.

And I wasn't really aware
of what was going on around me,

violent-wise and whatnot,

because I was
so focused on my own little mission.

That's all it was for me.
It was just complete desperation

to not miss this event.

[tense music playing]

[Boylan] I can see a steward on the floor,
and they've been knocked down.

And I'm watching,
hoping they'll stand back up

and get back up,
and they won't stay there.

And I can see one's already
stayed down for longer than normal.

I can hear my team already calling medics
to get over into that area.

It catches you. It catches your breath
when you're watching that, to thinking,

"What the hell is going on?"

[clamoring continues]

When I got over the bodies
that were on the floor and I stood up,

I walked off dead casual

because there was people that had got
through that were sprinting off.

And they're just like, "Yes! I'm in!"
and they're sprinting off. Do you know?

Mate, all you're doing there is saying,
"I've snuck in, and I'm sprinting off."

Do you know what I mean?
So, for me, I walked off dead casual.

And I'm thinking, "Oh my God.
I'm in and around the ground now."

[music gets calmer]

[Boylan] They've come through this soft
ticket-check area on the Spanish Steps.

These ticketless fans
were now on the outer concourse,

and they are circling
and they are looking for weaknesses.

So we make the decision
to lock down the turnstiles.

- [electronic beeping]
- We've never locked down the turnstiles.

There's never been a need
to lock down the turnstiles.

But I've just witnessed
something I've never seen before.

We need to lock down
and make sure we're reset

and everybody understands
what the new threat is outside.

[clamoring]

I assumed something bad must've happened
for the stadium to go into lockdown,

and it's starting to pile up.
People wanna get in. They've got tickets.

And I'm just there,
and people are shouting towards us.

They're starting to get aggressive now.
Like, "Why are you ignoring us?"

This, that. I'm like, "Listen,
we cannot do nothing about it."

"The stadium's in lockdown. I can't
let you in. I can't open the stadium."

"I ain't got the key
for the door to let you in."

[clamoring continues]

"You're taking the piss!
When I get in there, I'll fuck you up!"

"You think it's funny, you Paki cunt?"

And I've been called a lot of words.
I've had racism thrown at me.

It is upsetting.

But in this job role,
you cannot be emotional too much

because if people see a weakness,
they'll take advantage of you.

[tense music playing]

[Downs] As I was walking round the back
of the south side of the stadium,

the crush was really quite bad.

[pulsing suspenseful music playing]

[Downs] All the fans were
between the wall to the stadium,

and then there's an outside wall.

And so, because of the lockdown,
there was probably

a thousand or more fans

just queuing, very densely, to get in.

[clamoring]

And you just got crushed

in the middle of, predominantly,
lots of large men.

And I'm only five foot,

and it felt really scary.

[vuvuzela blowing]

This could really end up
being quite serious.

I just kept thinking,
"Please, don't anyone get hurt."

[pulsing suspenseful music continues]

[Bryant] Now you've got
a massive build-up of people

who are wanting to get in the stadium.

What you're trying to avoid is crushing,

where the density of crowds
in tight spaces becomes...

too much, too significant,

and serious injury can take place.

[music intensifies]

[Boylan] For the safety of the majority,

we make the decision
to reactivate the turnstiles.

- [clicks]
- [beeps]

[electronic beeping]

[Italian fans chanting]

I'm so happy
that we finally made it to the gates.

And the sign goes red,
and it beeps, and it doesn't open.

And I'm like, "What's going on?"

And so one of the stewards
quickly comes and checks my tickets,

and he said, "Well,
you are in the wrong section."

[chanting continues]

- [tense music playing]
- [blows kiss]

"But I'm Italian. How is it possible
I've been given this ticket into

the English fans
and not with the Italian fans?"

And he's like,
"Sir, there's nothing I can do."

They've already thrown
a lot of cans of beers all over us.

You know, I have a child with me.
It's not really safe.

I begged the stewards,
"Please, please, please."

It was just,
"Uh, sir, your ticket is there. Go there."

And as soon as we go from the queue,

we are the only two Italians
left outside Wembley Stadium.

In that moment, it hit me,
and I'm like, "Oh shit."

[suspenseful music playing]

[fans clamoring]

[Bryant] I was down
at the Club Wembley entrance,

down the side of the stadium,

supervising the arrival
of some UEFA guests.

[soft mysterious music playing]

There was already quite a big queue
forming of people who wanted to come in.

[indistinct chatter]

[Ugo] Club Wembley was rammed.
It was like something else this day.

I remember speaking to this dad
who was there with, erm... his twin girls,

and it's the first game
that they had ever been to.

And also, I appreciated his excitement
'cause we were the same. [chuckles]

We were the same.
He was having a family day out,

and I was just there
with just a load of mates.

But from that moment, it was just carnage.

- [frantic music playing]
- [dog barking]

[clamoring]

[tweeting]

[Bryant] I was pretty close
to the fencing.

Maybe 30, 40 people
were sort of swaying the fence

to build momentum, to then push it over.

[woman] Oh, it's going, it's going,
it's going! Is it? Is it?

[man] Oh fuck!

- [woman] Oh my God! They've got it.
- [man] Oh no!

[woman] Oh my God.

[man] Shit.

- [clamoring]
- [screams]

[Ugo] Then, there was an avalanche
of people just coming through.

You could see people in the queue
were worried, they were afraid.

This dad is there with his two daughters,

and he's shielding them
from bottles that have been thrown.

Thousands of these unruly people
who were just going in.

But we had to stay there to be in a queue

whilst all this chaos and carnage
was happening around us.

[woman] The horses can't even
do anything at this point.

Go on, charge at 'em.
Fucking charge at 'em. Do it.

[man] Yeah.

[woman] Fucking just run at 'em.
They'll soon fucking move.

[tense music playing]

[Bryant] I tried to help out
as best I could.

Myself and some colleagues
were trying to put the fence back up.

And then a fence falls down over here,
and then you pull it back up,

and then it falls down over there.

[clamoring continues]

It did feel like whack-a-mole
for the best part of 45 minutes.

- [yelling]
- [suspenseful music playing]

[fan] Boys!

[Ugo] Everything was dictated
not by security or police.

It was by the ticketless fans.

"How is this gonna be resolved?
When are they gonna stop?"

"When are the police
gonna get control of this?"

"And are we gonna be allowed
to do the thing which we came to do?"

Which was watch our team win the Euros.

[fans yelling]

[suspenseful music continues]

[Max] We saw a lot of people
going up the Olympic Steps.

And then me and a few of my boys,
we walked up the steps,

and we were walking around the stadium.

And then we saw a lot of people
rush into the ground.

[intriguing music playing]

Some people probably went there not even
thinking about breaking into the stadium,

but where they've been amongst
all the atmosphere

and the adrenaline buzz
of seeing people do that,

they've probably gone and done it,
and didn't even realize

they was doing it
from the adrenaline rush.

But I feel like
you can control yourself sometimes.

Maybe it is a bit far, doing that.

- [music stops]
- [beeps]

At the front of the turnstiles,
outside the ground,

there was one or two stewards
on every single entrance.

And then, in the ground,

at the back of the turnstile,
was another one.

So, each one had two or three stewards.

But because there was
so many people trying to sneak in,

every now and then,
the security guards in the ground

would run to help their friends,

which left a really small time frame
where one line had no security there.

Grabbed a guy's T-shirt and was like,
"Mate, I'm coming in with you."

I've gone in behind him.
I'm in the ground.

The guy comes back,

grabs the geezer
who I've gone in with first.

I've walked around him,
walked off again, dead casual,

and I'm literally praying,
"Please, please, please."

Every step I'm taking,
I'm thinking, "Please."

- I get further away from him.

All the adrenaline
is just running through your body.

It was just like,
pure excitement, happiness.

And I'm in the ground,
and I'm just thinking, "Oh my God."

"I've done it.
I've got money in my pocket still."

"I haven't spent a penny." Buzzing.

I always give teams that I work with

a checklist of what you need to do

anything of that sort in my life.

This horde of zombies come running in,
falling over, people trampling over them.

It was madness.

There's a conflict between those people
that have got in legitimately

and those people
that have got in illegally,

and there's scuffles
and fights and all sorts breaking out.

- [arguing]

If I had thrown myself
in front of all them people,

I probably would not

So, I ran over to the side,
just got my arm against the door,

And I'm just there,

Couldn't get it.
And all of a sudden, miraculously,

I don't know what happened,
and the door got shut.

And when I say "a swarm,"

I mean a swarm of people coming through

the entrance that we'd come in

and just running
to the other side of the stadium,

like, through the seats,
coming up to where we were sitting.

And it was just people, people,
people, just nonstop.

It was just, like,
"Well, I hope no one takes my seat."

And lo and behold, people did
when we went to go get a drink.

I was like, "Mate, I've paid 500 quid
for this seat. I wanna sit in this seat."

And he goes, "Really? You got ticket?"

I said, "Yeah, I've got a ticket."
He turned to his mate and he goes,

"Oi, these two paid for their tickets,"
and they started laughing.

And he and his friend described
how they had a minibus

of ten or 12 of them had come down

with the intention of breaking in,
and they all managed to.

[clacking]

We knew we had large numbers
inside the stadium,

and they'd dispersed, and were everywhere.

It's important now
not to get caught up in that,

and you have to accept they've won.

But we can see these large numbers
are still congregated around the stadium,

but especially
at the bottom of Olympic Steps.

You're aware of that threat.
We don't need all the turnstiles open,

so we start to lock them down.

[electronic beeping]

Nobody else needs to come in
other than late arrivals.

We've got a system for that.
We'll lock down.

[fanfare playing]

[pyrotechnics display rumbling]

They play the national anthem

and the hairs kind of...

It's a cliché, but they really do...

You get that feeling where
it's hard to describe, but it's like...

I feel almost, like,
pumped for the occasion.

This is the anthem
we've heard so many times before

but never on a stage like this.

And those guys are there,
singing my national anthem,

your national anthem,

and they're about to go out
and try and win

a major tournament for our country.

[Boylan] As the national anthem goes out,
I've got 6,000 people out there.

They've now decided that this is kickoff.
This is the time they need to get in,

and there is a large surge up the steps
to push toward the stadium.

[clamoring intensifies]

The police, at that point,

they lift their batons,
and they walk with purpose.

[music continues]

You can see all this police in riot gear,
and they're making a statement.

But the police will hold them?

Are the police gonna be able
to keep them back?

- [vuvuzela blowing]
- [fans clamoring]

[commentator] We all know
about the heroes of '66,

but this is a different time.

This is Gareth Southgate's team,

and now they're on the brink
of creating their own history.

The whole country is united.

[referee's whistle blows]

But Italy will provide

This is what the day was about.

And I remember the ball
coming across to Luke Shaw.

in that moment.

I was with a load of my mates.

We're just bouncing about.

All fell on the floor, like, laughing.
It was... It was wicked.

[Dan] It was just all too good to be true.

But it was true. I was there,
and it was happening, and it was amazing.

[England fans chanting]

This is the worst possible scenario.

I never dreamt about Italy
conceding a goal so early.

But it's only just the beginning.
Anything can happen.

Reality hit everybody, and it was like,
"Actually, we haven't won this game."

The atmosphere in the stadium changed,
and it got a lot more tense, nail-biting.

You just felt the Italians
getting more of a grip on things.

I almost remember
feeling relieved the whistle had blown,

because it looks
as if Italy were going to score.

[tense music playing]

[Bryant] On all the monitors
in the control room,

we could see this huge volume of people

against the line of police.

[fans clamoring]

[Boylan] "Why is this happening?"

Every time we'd look,
and every time we'd talk to the police,

it's, "They're still doing the same.
They're not moving."

"Just... Just leave. Just go."

[fans arguing with police]

[announcer] ...big screen now,
the highlights of what we've seen so far.

Halftime, Maya was sitting down

and a little crouched down
like that in her seat.

"Maya, let's go.
Let's try to go down to the Italian fans."

There was this guy.
He looked like he was really important.

So I say, "Please, we are Italians.
They are throwing beers on us."

"We are not enjoying the match."

"We'd like to be
with the Italians, please."

And he was like, "Follow me."

We are just following him,

and he opens the last door,
and we see the pitch again.

presumably for no other reason
than to take penalties.

It felt like a huge call.

These guys must be
absolutely killing it in training

with the penalties for him,
because they're both young.

[commentator] The referee blows
his whistle, and it's time for penalties.

[man 1] Why are these lot
fighting these lot?

- [man 1] You're not supposed to.

- [man 2] Yeah, I know.

[Boylan] I'm watching the people

If England win, they wanna be inside.

are they coming inside?

This lot are not England fans.

to me, it wasn't a question
they'd get abused.

young, Black, English footballers.

If you're doing well
and it's all positive,

then you're one of us,

and the minute you mess up,
then you're not.

"Will you let me know
that you get home safe?"

The P word was used freely,

and it's very hard for people
who've never been in that situation

to understand that.

So that wasn't
looking anybody in the face,

that was avoiding contact with people.

Because I don't want
to accidentally bump into someone,

and he just turns around
and lamps me in the face.

[Taz] At the end of the game,
I wanted to get out.

But you could hear
noises of racist chants.

You know, as the fans are coming out,
they're making comments.

"Black this." You know, "N this."

I put my hood on and just keep walking.

Get home.

[reporter] Last night, after the game,
this mural of Marcus Rashford defaced.

Football once again at the center
of a wider societal issue.

Marcus Rashford
has changed government policy

to look after kids
from impoverished backgrounds,

and a mural that has gone up
in support of him gets defaced.

That's the kind of thing
that makes you start asking questions

about the country you live in.

That's absolutely atrocious.

Absolutely atrocious.

Wow. What he's done
for the community as well.

We knew that was gonna happen today.
It's just terrible.

[Dan] Marcus Rashford tried his hardest

to help England win the trophy
and bring us the joy.

All of a sudden, now he's a villain
and is getting terrorized.

- It's outrageous.

The emotion I'm now feeling is
way beyond anything to do with football.

It's about sheer, unignorable racism.

There's no need for it. Like...

Someone's skin color ain't gonna matter
whether they score a penalty or not.

It's just like,
"What... What are you getting from this?

"Come on, mate,
sort yourself out. Grow up a bit."

I was shocked

that so many people
would be so openly racist.

You know, I work in Brent.
I... I live in a multiracial community,

and I just didn't think that would happen.

So it shows that you can live
in a bit of a bubble.

These people live amongst us.
It sounds weird even saying that.

But they do,
and they erode away our society,

and they affect human beings
every single day.

And the question is,
for me, was just, like,

"What will we do about it, at this point?
What will we do about it?"

[Saunders] I hope the players saw that

there was this huge,
overwhelming support for them.

That graphic that was
being shared everywhere

that had the crowns on the three players
that missed the penalties

and that they are kings.

[Bryant] I think you only have
to look at the way

that people rallied behind Rashford,
Sancho and Saka.

I think they show
a greater sense of community

and unity and purpose within this country.

[Ugo] The response gave me hope.
Of course it did.

People came out
to show their love and their support

and actually show the lads,

who may have felt
that everyone hated them,

that it was anything but.

[reporter] Breaking news tonight.
And in the last ten minutes,

Marcus Rashford has spoken out

after last night's
penalty defeat to Italy.

He has posted, "I can take critique
of my performance all day long,

but I will never apologize
for who I am and where I came from."

"The messages I've received today
have been positively overwhelming,

and seeing the response
had me on the verge of tears."

Whilst that perhaps healed
that wound in that moment,

it didn't...

it didn't quench my thirst.

[Lewis] I am way too long in the tooth

to have believed that winning
the European Championship

would've been a magic potion
to solve societal ills.

- It provided us with a moment.

It provided us with a period of time
where we could come together.

But in terms of solving the problems,
it was never going to do that.

And so, what does it say
about us as a country?

It says that we have work to do

to address that.

[Boylan] I never ever want to go through
what I faced on that day again.

I'll be honest. I'm not...
still not fully over it because it hurt.

It really, really hurt.

We saw things
that we'd never ever seen before.

[Keegan] The next day, you're thinking,

"How did nobody die?"

It was very, very fortunate
that there were no fatalities,

in my opinion.

[Bryant] It was completely unprecedented.
It was disgusting.

The stadium managed it incredibly well

under, you know,
the most difficult of circumstances.

[reporter] Footage caught some fans
breaching the barriers outside the ground,

rushing up the stairs
towards the national stadium.

When I woke up the following morning
and I put Sky Sports News on,

and no word of a lie,

the first clip I see

is the clip of the set of fans
that I was with,

and they're going on like
they're gonna be prosecuting people,

checking all the CCTV,

and my heart sank in my belly.

I'm thinking, "What have I done here?"

Are you ashamed of what you did?

[somber music intensifies]

[inhales] I'm not ashamed
of what I've done.

In 2020,
we was all locked away in our homes,

couldn't go anywhere,

could only go outside
for a little bit of exercise.

And the whole time when we're doing that,

the leaders of our country
are out here, partying.

How can I feel
like I've done something wrong?

To witness England
winning their first trophy since 1966,

I wasn't missing that... for nobody.

I still think, you know,
that England and English people

are very nice, very open-minded,

very tolerant
to other people and cultures.

But, for that one day,

England almost became the enemy,

for the way also we were treated
on the day by the fans.

And I often think they did me a favor.

Maya, when she talks
about something relating to Italy,

she says, "But, Daddy, we Italians..."

"But us Italians..."

When I say it's more than football...
for me, it was more than football.

Oh, oh! And that's Maya! [chuckles]

And I think that's when my dad told me,

I think I take after him.
