[Episode 20]

Between my lover and me, 300 long nights

will be erected like 300 high walls.

And the sea

will be a magic show between us.

So, I have to explain my relationship

with the boy again?

[Tender Light]

I don't care what you say

or what you think about me.

I just can't bear to see you suffer here.

You may choose not to accept me.

You may even regard me

as an infatuated fool.

But I'm going to take you away from here.

I'm going to take you out of Qingshui Town.

His thoughts

were just something that came from his youth rebellious phase.

It was from his desire to conquer.

He had nowhere else to spend his energy.

How could I take him seriously?

Are you saying

that you two aren't lovers?

Of course not.

Why would a person record such a voice recording

for an irrelevant person?

Zhou Luo's family owns a video store.

He often makes such recordings.

He's just burning his favorite songs

into cassette tapes

and giving them to his friends.

If so, what kind of friends are you two?

I buy groceries in his store occasionally.

Sometimes, we chat.

What do you guys chat about?

Poetry,

music,

dreams,

or love?

You should ask Guixiang

about what the customers talk about

when buying goods at her store.

What do they talk about?

Family matters

and trivial affairs.

For example?

The newest cassette tapes in the store,

the best songs we've heard,

and the kind of sweets that Wanwan likes.

When the weather was cold,

I'd help him choose a sweater.

You choose his sweater for him?

I chose all the outfits for his entire family.

Guixiang took care of Wanwan on my behalf often.

I should return her favor.

Has he ever told you

that he fancied you?

He didn't need to say it out.

I'm much older than him.

I could've guessed it somehow.

He recorded several cassette tapes

and suffered several setbacks.

After that, he forgot all about it.

There were lots of young girls chasing him.

He would have a shining future.

Another world awaits him after leaving Qingshui Town.

Why would he still remember me?

For a woman in a broken relationship

who was abused by her husband for a long time,

it's not shameful

to fall for someone else.

I'm a 30-year-old woman.

I no longer have any unrealistic dreams.

Relationships don't always go both ways.

Even a one-way relationship can be passionate too.

He was injured and hospitalized for you before.

Maybe

he could've done other things for you too.

That's all your speculation.

Chen Ling loves you so much.

Why can't you just let me go?

Stop trying to shift the topic!

Are you having an affair with Zhou Luo?

You're not answering me, huh?

I'll take it as a yes, then.

I'll kill Zhou Luo right now!

This is the voice recording on the night of his murder,

am I right?

That's right.

How do you explain this cassette tape?

Xu Yi was paranoid.

When there was any man approaching me,

even talking to me,

he would hit me.

Initially, I wanted to delete this recording.

But you didn't expect it to record this conversation,

am I right?

Let me tell you a story.

Zhou Luo likes you.

And it's not like you have no feelings for him.

Nan Ya,

you're still pretending,

aren't you?

You wanted to get a divorce and sell the house in a hurry.

It's because you have an affair with another man, am I right?

I've been asking you to divorce me for a long time.

Xu Yi,

I've handed the complaint to the court.

If you don't sign it,

I'll see you in court, then.

You don't want to give me the photo?

I'll head back and look for it myself.

If I find that photo,

I'll kill him tonight!

Mommy!

Xu Yi!

Zhou Luo.

Zhou Luo!

On Millennium Night,

Xu Yi found your affair with him.

He argued with you by the riverbank.

Zhou Luo followed you back home

as he was concerned about you.

Tell me! Where exactly is the photo?

Tell me!

Tell me!

Stop!

Let her go.

I was about to look for you.

Since when have you two had an affair?

Zhou Luo, this is none of your business!

Leave here!

Since you deliver yourself to my doorstep,

I'll send you to hell!

Zhou Luo, run!

Xu Yi, stop it!

Zhou Luo, run!

Xu Yi!

You jerk!

You...

Scram!

You wench!

How dare you protect him?

Zhou Luo, run!

I...

No.

It was me who killed him.

How was the story?

A confused youth

killed someone by accident

because the person he loved was injured.

Therefore,

you decided to take the blame on his behalf.

That's impossible.

One side of a cassette tape can only record 30 minutes at most.

When I pressed the record button,

Xu Yi only went upstairs after over ten minutes.

Xu Yi!

After that, we continued our argument all the way to the riverbank.

The entire process

lasted for over an hour.

The tape recorder cannot record the entire process.

Your story was touching,

but the reality is cruel.

It's not as romantic and wonderful as you think.

It's our instinct to seek gain and avoid harm.

Why would he get himself in trouble

when he had a bright future ahead of him?

Don't you agree?

Take a break.

How did it go?

She's very stubborn.

She didn't say anything, huh?

Liu,

tell the identification bureau

to search the crime scene again.

Gather all the fingerprints and footprints they can find.

Okay.

Besides, send the skin tissue in Xu Yi's nails

back to the province

to make a comparison with Zhou Luo's DNA.

No problem.

Also,

tell the medical examiners to examine the knife wound

on Xu Yi's back thoroughly.

Tell them to do a test if they can't identify it.

No problem.

You've worked hard.

Well, as for your speculation,

don't you think it's too bold?

Although Zhou Luo is intelligent,

he's young after all.

How could he be this calm after killing someone?

His statements were seamless

with no room for errors.

They might've acted in collusion to make each other's confessions identical.

But they didn't have enough time to do so.

Don't forget,

Nan Ya turned herself in at 2 AM.

Zhou Luo reported the case at 6 AM.

During that period,

he had more than enough time to calm himself down

and think about how to deal with the situation.

Or,

there might be another possibility.

What is it?

Zhou Luo's family might've also been involved in the concealment.

I don't think

that's possible.

There's Wanwan too, you know?

Although she's young,

she's already sensible.

Well,

even if Zhou Luo did kill Xu Yi

without leaving any traces behind,

do you think he's capable enough

to train a young kid like her

to lie together with him?

Mr. Chen!

Officer Lin!

I want to report Zhou Luo.

Look at this photo.

Look here.

And here.

It's obvious that someone used a photo-retouching software

to make the two photos into one.

And look at the back.

Officer Lin, you know this well enough.

Our shop didn't develop this photo.

What has this got to do with Zhou Luo?

I'm sure Zhou Luo placed it

in our shop on purpose.

He wanted me to see it.

I went to find Xu Yi

after my father was missing.

Back then, Xu Yi slapped my face with a stack of photos.

He even choked me

and said I was following him

as well as blackmailing him.

Back then, I thought it was strange.

I thought to myself that he might have a lot of enemies.

But when I went back,

I thought something was amiss.

I checked the receipts we gave out that day.

I found that Zhou Luo came to take his ID photo

in our shop two days before the photo showed up.

Besides,

as for the photo of my father and Xu Yi at the restaurant,

it was taken by the same person who took this one.

Who else could it be if it wasn't Zhou Luo?

I'm sure he must have threatened Xu Yi.

That's why Xi Yi killed my father.

Enough.

You had an issue with Zhou Luo.

Is that why you're pushing the blame on him for everything?

We require evidence for our investigation, you know?

You think we make wild accusations like you?

Just look at how much trouble you've caused lately.

You've ruined Zhang Qingli's reputation,

am I right?

How can she live with her head held up high now?

The school has already suspended him,

but he's still trying to make a scene.

Don't think that I have no idea.

Your son and Zhou Luo are good friends.

Is that why you're covering up for him?

I would've taught you a lesson right now

had I not been a police!

Fine. I'll avoid arousing suspicion.

Talk to him, then.

You're just covering up for him!

You guys are in cahoots!

You guys are ganging up on our family!

Liu Xun!

What are you talking about?

Where do you think you are?

This is the police station!

I understand

the situation you're in.

You can head back first.

I'll tell you the result

once I get to the bottom of the case.

S-u-s-p-i-c-i-o-n.

S-u-s-p-i-c-i-o-n.

- Suspicion. - Suspicion.

Stress.

Stress.

S-t-r-e-s-s.

S-t-r-e-s-s.

Zhang Qingli, where are you going?

S-i-l-e-n-c-e.

S-i-l-e-n-c-e.

- Silence. - Silence.

You cannot come here!

You're still suspended from school!

Your punishment hasn't been revoked yet!

You cannot go inside!

You cannot go inside!

You're still suspended from school!

Your punishment hasn't been revoked yet!

What's going on?

I want to go to school.

No way.

What you did

went against the school's regulations completely.

And you're not remorseful about it at all.

What have I done wrong?

Which of my words weren't true?

What?

Are you picking on me

just because your daughter's reputation was ruined?

She should've stayed away from Zhou Luo

and shouldn't have done such a dirty thing

if she cared about her reputation!

Shut up!

I won't!

Zhou Luo was punished as well.

Why didn't you report him to the superior of the Education Bureau

when the superior came to inspect the school?

What?

Is it because you think I'm no longer useful to you?

You... You're now expelled!

Tell your mother to come and complete the procedures tomorrow.

Don't you dare!

Why wouldn't I dare?

I, Zhang Huashan, founded this school.

I'm in charge here.

I don't want a student like you!

My father is dead.

If you dare expel me,

I'll make sure your school will close down!

I'll make sure of it!

Sir!

What are you all looking at?

Let's just bear with him.

Just a few more months.

We can't afford to offend him.

Let him be.

Zhou Luo!

Madam Guixiang!

What's wrong?

Madam Guixiang, I have good news.

I have good news!

Zhou Luo,

you can return to school now.

- Really? - Yes!

Mr. Zhang told us to notify you.

He said Zhou Luo could return to school

after he handed in his reflection report.

It's all thanks to Liu Xun.

Zhang Huashan wouldn't have said so

had he not caused trouble at school.

What trouble did he cause?

He said

he would make a scene at school

if they didn't allow him to return to school.

Anyway, he's going back to school.

It wouldn't make sense

if they didn't allow you to return to school.

By the way,

Zhang Qingli is under her father's watch right now.

She can't join us at the moment.

She wanted me to tell you

that she already wrote the reflection report for you.

You can just head to school tomorrow.

That'll be unnecessary.

Luo, write the report yourself.

Sure, I'll write it myself.

Why do you look so grumpy?

No, I'm not.

How about I write it for you?

Keep an eye on them.

Chen Jun!

Keep an eye on him! Hurry and finish the report!

Huashan,

we know

that you did a lot

for Zhou Luo.

Zhou Luo was able to receive the grade reduction notice from Jinghua

all thanks to you.

Indeed.

You guys don't need to say that.

We already had over 100 students

before he joined us.

You can ask around and will know

each of them is here because of the school's reputation.

I don't need him to build up our school's reputation.

That's not what I mean.

Have some water.

Thank you.

Mr. Zhang, Mrs. Zhang,

I wish to say something from my heart today.

Please pardon me

if I say anything wrong.

Qingli

is truly an excellent child.

I truly like her.

That's right.

I would be so happy

if she got together with Zhou Luo.

Zhou Luo is just too eye-catching.

Plenty of people in school are jealous of him,

which let your daughter be wronged.

We felt sorry about it.

We came here to apologize to you.

However,

I'll never believe

that they two

would do something improper.

Do you two believe it?

I've already asked Zhou Luo about it.

Zhou Luo swore

that he never did such a thing.

Someone was causing trouble on purpose.

My child has grown up.

It's not like he's willing

to tell us about everything.

In addition, his father and I aren't well-educated.

However, I...

I just want to say

that we hope the best for our children.

All parents in the world

would like to devote everything to their children.

Huashan,

you were the one who took Zhou Luo in.

He'll surely remember your kindness

when he's successful in the future.

That's right.

Actually,

we watched them growing up.

It's not like we have no idea

what kind of child Zhou Luo is.

That's right.

What Mrs. Zhang said is true.

These children are very close to each other.

He would do everything to protect Qingli.

Why would he bully her?

Besides, if both of them

do get into a university in Beijing together,

at least they can take care of each other.

Isn't that a good thing?

That's all in the future.

It's up to them.

It actually

depends on you.

Well, we'll leave you to it.

Take your stuff.

Don't forget about them.

We brought them specially for you.

We'll come again.

We'll visit you again.

Thank you.

Thank you, Mr. Zhang.

See you.

Thank you.

Thank you, Mrs. Zhang.

They were singing the same tune.

What were they doing?

The liquor is pretty good though.

Bring it inside.

But the college entrance exam is coming.

Studying is their priority.

We shouldn't let them contact each other that often.

Does Chen Ling

feel better now?

Xu Yi deserved to die.

My sister will be free after his death.

Better a little loss than a long sorrow.

So you also think that I murdered Xu Yi?

Zhou Luo.

I won't ask you again.

But I believe

that my buddy isn't a villain.

All right now.

Let's go.

Qingli's lie was exposed.

Will Lin Fanglu put you under tight surveillance?

It's pointless for him to do so.

It is really dark, huh?

[Poetry Anthology, Compilation of Late Rain]

Luo, you're finally back.

Officer Lin is in your room.

You like poetry, huh?

Which poem do you like the most?

I'm a science student.

I don't know poetry well.

I'm just reading them for fun.

[Poetry Anthology; Borrower: Nan Ya]

Nan Ya was the only person who borrowed this book before.

Your name wasn't on the library card.

You stole it from the library.

Why?

I forgot why.

You shouldn't touch other people's stuff.

I don't think you forgot the reason.

What exactly are you trying to say?

You like poetry,

but you like the person who reads these poems even more.

Are you here to interrogate me or chat with me?

Please leave

if you wish to chat with me.

I have something else to do.

Do you recognize this cassette tape?

I love her.

But it won't change

what I saw that night.

Are you sure about that?

If so, why are you trying so hard to hide

and distance yourself from her?

I just don't want to prevent her

from receiving the justice she deserves.

You've already prevented her.

If so, is there a difference between the evidence you found

and what I said?

There are countless possibilities of what happened that night.

However, what you did

has already reduced the credibility of your testimony.

You're not helping Nan Ya.

Think carefully.

Are there any details or evidence

that you might've missed?

Or is there anything

you're hiding from me?

Be quick.

This is the only chance I can give you.

Officer Lin,

are you heading back now?

Nan Ya,

do you believe in love?

I know it sounds ridiculous.

A person who has never truly loved someone

is trying to talk about love

with a woman whom he has no chance to be with.

But I know

that the feeling inside me

cannot be suppressed or cast aside.

It's just like a piece of burning coal.

It hurts.

Mister,

give me a tray of baozi.

Okay.

Thank you.

Here, please enjoy.

Have you heard?

Officer Lin had a relationship with Nan Ya before.

Really?

They had a relationship when they were in high school.

No wonder Officer Lin was so protective of Nan Ya.

Well, Officer Lin is...

Morning.

Morning, Officer Lin.

Officer Lin, you're here.

Morning.

What's wrong?

It's nothing.

Officer Lin, I should go.

Morning, Officer Lin.

Morning, Officer Lin.

Morning.

Morning.

Officer Lin.

Chen,

the medical examiner's report is out.

Have you read it?

Yeah.

But it's not strong enough.

Doesn't that say enough?

Officer Lin, Chen,

Officer Xu wants to see you two.

What's wrong?

All of you are acting strange today.

Hu Xiu reported you to the authorities.

Come in.

Well...

As for Nan Ya's case,

Officer Xu is angry about it now.

Look at this.

Did you write this?

Where did you get this from?

Hu Xiu gave it to us.

Lin Fanglu,

I just want to know if you and Nan Ya...

No.

If there was something between us,

I would've written about it in the report.

Back then, I was not sure how I felt about her.

But it happened when I was in high school.

It's all in the past now.

I know that it happened over ten years ago.

But I want to ask you this.

Did you guys keep in touch after that...

No.

Sir,

don't tell me you're doubting his professionalism.

If you have doubts about him,

I can guarantee

that he's not trying to defend her.

He didn't stop his investigation

after Nan Ya's application of the right of self-defense was submitted.

Did you think I had no idea about his effort?

The thing is, Hu Xiu reported him to us at this moment.

We were caught off-guard.

Besides, she even has a letter.

Did Hu Xiu say

where she got the letter from?

She said you sent the letter to Nan Ya.

It was a long time ago.

She just remembered.

Do many people know about this?

Or he can just deny it.

There's no signature on it anyway.

You're messing around here.

Both the names and the schools match.

Anyone can tell that it's his handwriting at first glance

if we send it for appraisal.

It doesn't seem like the content is improper.

If this gets out of hand,

what should we do with the case?

What should we do?

Here. See?

Did you see these?

This is a document from the provincial department!

They are also

asking about the result of Nan Ya's case.

They even said that we could submit a petition to withdraw the case

if it was a case of the right of self-defense.

If so, we have to release her.

Now,

we're on thin ice.

Don't release her first.

I can withdraw from the case to avoid arousing suspicion.

That won't do.

You were the one who found all the breakthrough points.

Now, we have new evidence.

We need to wait for the identification bureau

to give us their report.

Sir,

didn't the superiors

already approve Chen's report?

Since Chen Ling isn't a suspect

and she has an alibi in the hospital,

doesn't that mean Chen can be reinstated to his post?

Chen will be in charge

of the interrogation and investigation.

As for me,

I'll offer ideas to him in secret.

That's all you can do for now.

Hu Xiu was determined

to say that you were covering up for Nan Ya.

Xu Yi's family called us as well.

The superiors will find out very soon.

Instead of that,

we should deal with it ourselves in advance.

Thank you, sir.

Don't take it to heart.

Why do you look so nonchalant about it?

Did you intend to quit long ago?

So you can have a good rest?

Don't you think

that we're pretty much closer

to the truth behind the incident now?

We don't have any evidence.

It's pointless even if all your speculations are true.

Now, I have a risky proposition.

However, we need to put some effort into persuading Officer Xu.

Are you willing to give it a try?

Tell me about it.

You have to treat me with a meal if you wish to know it.

Don't tell me, then.

Well.

You're the best cook in Qingshui Town, no?

I've been craving your cooking for so long.

Does that mean we have to buy ingredients?

Yeah.

Officer Lin.

Okay.

Zhou Luo.

How did you find out?

Find out what?

My relationship with Nan Ya.

What's your relationship with Nan Ya?

Hu Xiu reported me to the Yishan Police.

It was all part of your plan, wasn't it?

Having Liu Xun discover the photo,

the discovery of Xu Yi's hideout,

reporters swarming me,

and Hu Xiu's report to the authorities.

All of the arrangements

might seem like they have nothing to do with you,

but you could offer a helping hand

to make them happen.

Do you think I'm capable enough to do these things?

I will no longer be in charge

of Nan Ya's case.

This must be the result you desired.

But Zhou Luo,

even though I've withdrawn from the case,

there's no way you can stop the police

from revealing the truth.

I'm just an eyewitness.

This has nothing to do with me.

Zhou Luo,

in this world,

there are no perfect crimes.
