[Episode 19]

Lesson 33.

A day to remember.

Listen to the tape, then answer the question below.

We've all experienced days

when everything goes wrong.

A day may begin well enough,

but suddenly, everything seems to get out of control.

What invariably happens

is that a great number of things

choose to go wrong at precisely the same moment.

Qingli, the food is ready. Come and eat.

Let her be.

Those two.

What on earth is going on with them?

This is really weird.

Let's say the two are in a relationship.

It's not a big deal.

I mean, they're old enough.

Regarding Zhou Luo, I don't have a problem with him.

But did they have to tell

the whole world about it?

That Liu Xun started it.

Liu Xun's father is dead, so he lost his mind.

But in that recording,

it was Officer Lin's

and Qingli's voices.

Do you think this

is related to what happened

to Xu Yi?

I've been wondering

about one thing.

On the night of the millennium,

at the place where the car was burned,

I saw a back.

Who was it?

I think it was Zhou Luo.

Zhou Luo?

Is that you, Zhou Luo?

Stop!

Zhou Luo?

Did you see him clearly?

It was dark that night.

The clothes they were wearing were pretty much the same too.

I called him,

but he ran off without looking back.

It's impossible to determine who it was.

Something is surely up with Zhou Luo.

Otherwise, why are the police so keen on him?

Since he came,

many problems have arisen at Huashan.

I'd rather not have accepted this top scorer.

Huashan would still keep a good reputation.

Ling.

What benefits did she give you

to make you do all these for her?

How exactly did Xu Yi die?

I've already told the police.

You're lying.

What were you doing at her house so late?

I was taking Wanwan home.

Zhou Luo,

there's something fishy between you two.

You think I didn't see

you two secretly meeting at the hospital?

I saw you.

What were you two talking about by the garden that late?

Nothing.

It's a secret, huh?

Why do I have to tell you?

Why is it you're always there whenever she's in trouble?

You were at the train station too when they caught her cheating.

And the night of the millennium.

You just so happened to see that crucial moment.

Isn't it all too coincidental?

You two were in collusion, weren't you?

You deliberately kept Wanwan with you.

That way, you'd have a reason to go to her house.

You didn't go a minute earlier or later, but right when the action happened.

Speak up!

Tell me how he really died.

What's wrong with you, Chen Ling? What are you doing?

They two were in collusion!

Have you lost your mind?

Go look for Nan Ya to settle your grievances.

How you two

want to fight over a man has nothing to do with us.

Don't drag my son into the mess.

Who said I was fighting over a man with her?

She and Xu Yi were married.

What were you when you were stuck in between?

You're just protecting him because he's your son.

Go ahead and ask him

if he's telling the truth.

Let go of him!

Ask him!

Are you insane?

I'm not insane!

Ling,

what are you doing at their house?

They colluded to kill Xu Yi!

Shut up!

Chen Jun, do you believe me or him?

Let's go home.

I won't.

Bring your sister back. Now!

Go home.

Let me go.

I'm going to find out the truth!

Nothing to see here!

Come on, let's go home. She's really lost her mind.

Ignore her.

She's crazy.

That Chen Ling has really gone crazy.

So infuriating.

Where are you off to?

Going for a stroll.

I need a breather.

What's up with everybody?

Lesson 35.

Justice was done.

Listen to the tape,

then answer the question below.

We might say that

justice has been done

when a man's innocence or guilt has been proven beyond doubt.

Justice

is part of the complex machinery of the law.

Those who seek it

undertake an arduous journey.

And can never be sure

that they will find it.

Judges, however wise or eminent,

are human

and can make mistakes.

[Tender Light]

Don't you push me.

Let go.

I'm not going back. Stop bothering me!

Don't you know you look pitiful right now?

I've never seen you in this state.

What about me?

Get inside, now!

Have you not embarrassed yourself enough?

Get inside!

Ling.

What's going on?

Ask her.

What is it?

She went and made a scene at Zhou Luo's house.

So embarrassing.

How was I embarrassed?

Chen Ling,

how long has it been since you broke up with Xu Yi?

Why are you still hanging up on it?

Do you know how this family has been living in the past few years?

We've been adapting to your disposition.

Watching every word we say.

When you're happy, the whole family rejoices.

When you're unhappy, all of us have to hold our breath.

Yes,

Xu Yi had wronged you.

But it's been six years.

If you still can't get over it, then it's your problem.

I don't need you to lecture me.

That's enough.

I haven't finished!

What was so great about Xu Yi?

He's already dead, and yet you still can't let go.

If I were you, I'd have bought firecrackers

and celebrated!

I'd have at least admired you, then.

Are you looking down on me now?

Yes.

In my heart,

you used to be a generous,

loyal,

and reliable older sister.

But look at you now.

Have you looked yourself in the mirror?

You're nothing more than a resentful woman.

As a man, not even I would want you.

Why are you making yourself so pathetic?

Don't speak of your sister like that.

Chen, stop hitting him! Stop it!

Am I wrong?

If you find me embarrassing,

you can sever your ties with me.

Ling.

Don't say such things.

There are plenty of other men.

Why can't you just get over him?

You want me to be with whom?

Jiang Zhi?

He's touched every one of the hospital's nurses.

Fine.

If you think I'm embarrassing,

I'll go ahead and marry him tomorrow.

I never said you should be with Jiang Zhi.

Didn't you guys say

that he's a doctor

and financially stable,

so he's dependable?

I forgot

when Xu Yi came to pay a visit,

you two were so delighted as well.

He was also a guy you two found for me.

How come you won't admit it now?

Ling, it was my fault, my mistake.

We failed to see him for who he really was.

I'm sorry, Ling.

You guys didn't do anything wrong. It's my own fault.

Whatever happened between Xu Yi and me,

only I know.

Who are you people to judge me?

What did I ever do wrong?

It's been years.

They were the ones who betrayed me.

But why is everyone criticizing me?

What did I do to deserve this?

He died mysteriously.

All I want is to find out what happened.

I just want to know

if what he told me that afternoon was true.

He promised me.

Mom.

My heart hurts.

That's enough.

Qingli, come.

Eat.

Good girl.

Eat with Dad.

Let's eat.

Let's eat, Qingli.

It's no use begging me.

Dad,

please let Zhou Luo go back to school.

I promise I'll study hard.

No way. I'm not letting him stay in Huashan any longer.

Dad.

Be nice.

Just pretend it never happened.

Trust me. I'm totally fine.

If you're fine, why did you say those things to the police?

Go ask Officer Lin if you want to know why.

Okay, eat first.

You tell me.

What exactly did you guys do that night?

I can't say. I can't!

Why can't you say it, Qingli?

Then, Zhou Luo will never go back to school.

Why are you kicking him out? This is my own issue.

It's unrelated to him.

How is it unrelated?

You're a girl, but you don't care about your reputation at all.

You think other people

would simply believe Officer Lin's words?

Have you got any idea what other people would say?

Gossip is a fearful thing.

No need to shout.

I don't care.

Qingli,

what do you mean you don't care? You're a girl.

I don't care!

You don't care?

I've been working in education my whole life.

Now that I'm old,

my reputation is suddenly

ruined.

Okay, that's enough.

Qingli, we're done talking about this. Eat your food.

Eat your food.

If Zhou Luo isn't continuing to study, neither will I.

What are you saying, Qingli?

I said if Zhou Luo doesn't continue to study,

Neither will I! Got that?

Qingli, what are you talking about?

I'm not eating. You guys can eat.

What? You...

Qingli!

So annoying.

I told you not to talk about it.

You just wouldn't stop.

Now look.

You can eat by yourself.

Luo, where are you going this late?

Going for a run.

Isn't it too late for a run?

I can sleep better after a run.

Mom, call the police.

Something happened at Nan Ya's house.

What?

A man who hits a woman is just a jerk.

If you ask me,

Nan Ya should just divorce Xu Yi.

Luo! Luo, what happened?

Mom, take Wanwan back. Don't let her see.

You hurry back too.

It's all right, baby. Don't cry.

She hasn't come out of her room the whole day.

Come and eat.

No, I'm not eating.

You shouldn't skip breakfast.

What are you doing here?

I'm looking for something.

Looking for what?

Where did it go?

I'm not feeling well today. I dropped the tablets.

What's the problem?

Are you okay?

I'm fine.

My throat's a little dry, that's all. See? My voice is hoarse.

Let me know if you're unwell. Don't simply take medication.

I need to go to the restroom.

Tear this off and tear it clean.

Then, put up this honor board of the exam.

Stick this up. Make one more

commendation notice of Zhou Luo's admission

to Jinghua with a reduced offer.

Hang on. Sir, that's...

Just two days ago, we put up a notice of criticism. Now, it's commendation?

Never mind that.

The higher-ups are coming for an inspection,

and our school was added at the last minute.

This shows they pay a lot of attention to us.

We have to make use of this opportunity.

Once the leaders leave,

you can remove the notice.

The students might not even see it.

Understand?

Okay, will do.

[Notice of Commendation]

Director Su.

Mr. Zhang.

Welcome, welcome. Please follow me inside.

[Huashan Cram School] It's wonderful to hear

[Xingchen Vocational School] that you were able

to send a student from this town to Jinghua.

Yes.

This time,

I must come and have a visit.

Mr. Zhang,

why don't you introduce your school?

Huashan Cram School

currently has 168 students.

There are two Science classes

and one Arts class.

Are the students all from this town?

Not to brag or anything.

Huashan is kind of famous now.

There are not only kids from nearby towns,

but even children from other counties

have also come to study at Huashan.

Students,

this is Director Su from the Education Bureau.

Let's give him a warm welcome.

Mr. Zhang, what are they doing?

Are there no classes today?

I hope you don't mind giving a short speech

to encourage these kids.

They're all repeat students

and need more encouragement.

Which one is Zhou Luo?

He took the day off today, so he's not here.

Is he ill?

I think something happened at his home.

What a pity.

I was hoping to meet the boy.

I know where Zhou Luo lives.

Go and get him, then.

Yes, sir.

The mental outlook of students at our school

is pretty good.

Guixiang!

Is Zhou Luo home?

What's up?

The county leader is here for an inspection.

He's at Huashan

and wishes to meet Zhou Luo.

County leader?

What did Mr. Zhang say?

Stop asking. Ask him to go with me.

Oh, I... Wait here. I'll go and get him.

Okay.

I hope everyone maintains an optimistic spirit

and high morale.

Let's all follow in Zhou Luo's footsteps.

Yes!

Zhou Luo!

Come here.

Come on up here.

Director Su, this is Zhou Luo.

Zhou Luo, you are a role model for Qingshui Town.

Come on, Mr. Zhang. Let's take a group photo.

Yes, sure.

Okay, everyone look at me.

Look this way. Smile.

Grin. There we go.

Okay, once more.

I thought your dad wouldn't allow Zhou Luo to go back to school.

One more.

Okay.

[Notice of Commendation. Congratulations to Zhou Luo]

In a dilemma, huh?

Pardon?

It's difficult to decide whether to expel Zhou Luo or not?

If you expel him,

Huashan is going to lose the only student

who will be admitted by Jinghua in years.

The leaders are all watching.

If you don't expel him,

you can't get past yourself.

Your daughter was taken advantage of,

but you couldn't vent your anger.

Are you here to laugh at me?

Of course not.

I'm here to find out exactly

how powerful and capable Zhou Luo is.

What really happened

to them that night?

I'm not going to say anything.

Moreover, there's no need for me to.

Why?

Because

I don't believe what they told me that day at all.

Officer Lin,

could you talk to my dad for me?

Tell him that I was deliberately acting up.

Actually, there was nothing between us.

Didn't you agree

to keep it secret?

I can help you,

but you must tell me the truth.

Come to me if you want.

I will take responsibility for my own actions.

It's true I wasn't with her that night.

Then, where were you that night?

I was at home.

If you were home, why didn't Qingli see you?

Because I was in the toilet.

You were in the toilet for an hour and a half?

I had a stomach ache.

I took pills,

and I fell asleep.

I went to the toilet.

I woke up

and went to the riverbank.

Then I sent Wanwan home.

Nobody can prove any of these things. So does everything I said

not count?

Why exactly are you so hell-bent

on convicting Nan Ya?

Is it to get a promotion,

or there's a personal grudge?

Because I'm a police officer.

It doesn't matter how much I personally like you,

or because Nan Ya was my classmate,

my duty is to find out the truth

and bring the perpetrator to justice.

When are you coming back?

Soon.

It'll take some time for the formalities.

I think you're involving

too much of your personal feelings in this case.

Wenting,

you're thinking too much.

I'm not.

In my opinion,

this case is simply justifiable self-defense.

And there's ample evidence to support it.

I don't know what you are struggling with, Fanglu.

Have you forgotten why you went to Qingshui town?

The provincial office is being reshuffled right now.

You'd better finish it up and get back as soon as possible.

I just think there are still doubtful points.

Are you trying to prove

that you're not harboring a criminal?

I don't have to prove anything.

The more you try to draw the line,

the more it speaks of your concern.

Okay, yes. I do care. Why?

What's wrong with that?

I can absolutely go with the flow

and close the case,

but I'm unable to convince myself.

All right?

You happy now?

Just do whatever you want.

I have to finish my thesis. I'm hanging up.

Seeking advantages and avoiding loss are human instincts.

Wouldn't you have chosen the same?

Are you saying a woman like me

deserved to be abused by my husband

and not lift a finger in defense?

Where's the photo?

Where did you hide it?

That photo

is the same one I received as blackmail.

Get over here!

Try to run, huh?

Little birdie flies.

Don't jump. Aren't you dizzy turning in circles?

Little birdie flies!

Where is it flying to?

It's flying to the flowers.
