[Episode 16]

[Tender Light]

Why...

Did you lie to him today?

Because...

Because I like you.

I've liked you

since the moment I saw you.

Actually, on Millennium Night,

I was going to tell you...

That I like you.

My feelings for you

aren't a spur-of-the-moment thing.

And it's not just I flipped.

It's something much deeper.

Hence, I'm willing to believe everything you've said.

Everything.

If you've made up your mind to protect someone,

I, Zhang Qingli,

will always be on your side.

Wait for a bit.

Let's get some food.

[The day after the train station incident happened,

Autumn, 1999]

Come on.

I'll go with you.

What do you guys want?

I want the blue-colored plum.

Okay.

Xu Yi beat her so badly in front of everyone

yesterday.

And still, she shows herself in public shamelessly.

No one could've expected her to elope with Xu Jian.

No wonder Xu Yi wanted to beat her to death.

She deserved it.

She's really shameless.

What did you say?

I...

Who is shameless?

You...

Nan Ya.

Qingli, can I ask you for a favor?

What is it?

If it's okay, could you help me take a few photos?

Okay.

Thank you.

Qingli.

Are you shocked?

I... I need evidence in order to file a complaint with the Women's Federation.

Nan Ya.

If you're going to file a complaint,

I can go with you.

I'll testify for you.

Thank you.

Qingli.

What's the matter, Qingli?

Don't scare me. What's wrong?

Xu Yi is a devil.

Nan Ya's body is covered in wounds,

with fresh ones covering old ones.

You saw it all?

She asked me to help her photograph them for evidence.

Luckily, my sister didn't marry that piece of trash.

A guy like Xu Yi should just die.

Zhou Luo.

Don't do anything rash, Zhou Luo.

We're just students.

What can we do to someone like Xu Yi?

She... She can go to the Women's Federation.

She can divorce him.

Even if she's having an affair,

he cannot beat her up so badly.

She wasn't going to elope that day.

Zhou Luo.

Let's go.

So Nan Ya was planning

to run away quietly with Wanwan.

If Xu Jian was eloping with her,

why didn't he have any luggage with him?

Why didn't Xu Yi beat him up?

Also, there were so many people there.

How did Xu Jian

manage to slip away unnoticed?

Xu Yi is so evil.

He's despicable.

So, why is Xu Yi

spoiling his own reputation?

He wants to teach Nan Ya a lesson.

And in front of the whole town,

he labeled Nan Ya as a cheating wife who tried to elope.

Then it'd be harder for her to get a divorce.

What's so hard?

We're not living in the old society.

Seek help from the Women's Federation, or the court.

I'm sure there's a way to take Xu Yi down.

What are you shouting for?

Nan Ya's name is now smeared.

Even if her complaint were successful,

they could still threaten her with Wanwan.

That's right.

Right now, Nan Ya's biggest weakness is Wanwan.

My mom said it before.

If she can't get a divorce,

it must be out of fear of losing her child.

That's why Nan Ya tried to run away secretly.

There's no better choice.

How did you know?

Wanwan told me.

I only found out the day before.

How about

we help Nan Ya to run away?

It's going to be much harder for her to run away now.

I heard Xu Yi knows someone who's working at the train station.

They'd find out immediately

if she tried to run away.

She can take the bus.

It's the same. You need to take the bus at the train station too.

Actually, running away

isn't the best option for Nan Ya.

She has a home but she can't go back.

She can only hide.

Moreover, Wanwan is sick.

There's no cure.

Nan Ya is too pitiful.

She can't get a divorce.

She can't run away either.

What are we going to do?

"What are we going to do?",

stop saying this.

I just watched a foreign movie the other day.

It's about a man

who kills his wife's lover.

He then makes it look like an accident.

That's what happens in the movie. You guys want to watch it?

Let's watch it now.

The bridge collapsed!

My husband is still at the construction site!

The bridge collapsed!

My husband is still at the construction site!

The bridge collapsed!

What's happened?

Guixiang, big news!

The bridge by the river has collapsed.

I need to go home

and ask my husband to go take a look.

The bridge collapsed!

Quickly!

Hurry up.

Slowly. Come on.

Make way, make way.

Buddy.

Watch out. Careful!

People will die!

Quickly, dig!

Mr. Xu, please help me.

Mr. Xu, please save me!

You rogue!

Take a look yourself.

Even with substandard materials,

it's impossible that the whole bridge would collapse.

It caused people to die, you hear me?

People died!

How could it be so fragile?

Xu Jian must have done something shoddy.

Neither of you are innocent!

Someone died.

Someone will die for this.

Now you've realized someone's dead, huh?

Now you're scared because someone's dead, huh?

You only know to cry and whine.

Crying won't help the situation! You better go

and get Xu Jian here!

What do we do now?

The authorities are surely going to investigate it.

Mr. Xu.

Mr. Xu, please save me!

Now you're scared, huh?

Don't grab me!

Stay away!

Listen up.

You two useless goons.

You couldn't even handle such simple matters.

You were born to be poor.

Loser!

Mr. Xu.

Mr. Xu, help me!

Mr. Xu!

Mr. Xu, please help me!

Mr. Xu...

Xu Yi is in big trouble this time.

Nan Ya is filing complaints against him.

He might end up in jail.

I also heard

that Xu Yi treated the county leaders to a meal.

Meanwhile, Nan Ya just stood there

like a crazy woman.

It must be because

Xu Yi beat her up badly before.

That's because Nan Ya was messing around with another man.

You're right.

Yeah.

That Liu Changshui.

Xu Yi reported Liu Changshui to the authorities.

Did you hear about that?

I heard it from my husband.

Liu Changshui is immoral.

You know what?

He procured substandard materials.

And then he absconded with Xu Yi's company funds.

Xu Yi said he's trying to raise money.

Did you guys pitch in?

Have you guys watched this? How about we watch it today?

Did you hear the news?

Liu Xun's dad ran away.

I heard them saying

that Xu Yi reported him.

He supposedly procured substandard materials.

What are you doing here?

And what are you doing here?

You've been acting sneaky these days.

You think I didn't notice?

The bridge collapsed and lots of money was spent on it.

There must be something wrong with Xu Yi, and I'm here to find proof.

Why didn't you ask me to come with you?

You know I want to be a police officer.

I didn't want to get you in trouble.

They're all on high alert right now.

You'd be in danger if they found you,

okay?

There's danger and yet you're doing it alone.

Am I not your friend?

I'm asking you, am I your friend?

Be careful.

All right.

Let's go.

We'll check over there.

Okay.

Hang on.

Three, two, one. Run!

Go!

Let's go over there.

Be careful.

Slowly.

What are we looking for?

The bridge must have collapsed

due to the construction process or the substandard materials.

I'm taking samples.

Hurry, go! Hide over here.

Get over here.

Listen up.

Move

all of these things

out of here tonight.

The place where workers died has been cordoned off.

They'll surely look into this area too.

So be alert.

We'll start clearing after two AM. Got it?

Yes, sir.

Be careful.

No one is allowed in here.

Yes, got it.

The investigative team will be here tomorrow.

If anything goes wrong, it will cost you.

Yes, sir. Rest assured, Mr. Xu.

As expected,

Xu Jian is putting on an act with Xu Yi.

We better get out of here.

Come on.

Go.

This way...

Here...

Who's there?

It's me.

I'm here.

Don't go over there.

Why can't I go there?

My... My friend has loose bowels.

She couldn't find a toilet.

She's a girl. Don't go peeping at her.

What are you two girls doing here so late at night?

I'm done...

So sorry. We're leaving right away.

Quickly go. Leave right now.

Got it. Sorry.

Let's go.

Hurry up.

Go.

Xu Yi is surely hiding something.

He's just a jerk.

On the surface, he fell out with Xu Jian.

But actually, they're doing dirty things together privately.

Listen.

Thank god we went earlier.

Or else anything incriminating would've been removed.

So Xu Yi is just putting on an act

in front of the townspeople.

On the surface, he claims to be the aggrieved husband.

But it's actually not that simple.

Indeed.

Not only did he slander Nan Ya,

but he was also threatening her with Wanwan to not get a divorce.

On the surface,

he's cut any connections with Xu Jian.

But in fact, they were secretly doing business together.

Xu Yi is truly evil.

Maybe we should call the police.

No, not yet.

Xu Yi definitely

had tricks up his sleeve regarding the bridge incident.

We'll secretly follow him.

Maybe

we could find some useful evidence

that could send him straight to jail.

I agree.

I also can take this chance to take my sister's revenge.

But the bridge collapse incident is a serious matter.

Isn't he supposed to be investigated?

That's different.

How so?

They only know what happened on the surface

but not the dirty things underneath.

They investigate openly

while we investigate secretly.

Anyone here have a camera?

A good one.

I do.

I have an SLR.

It's a little glitchy.

But it's still usable.

Zhou Luo.

Isn't that Xu Yi's car?

Let's find a place to hide.

Let's go.

Is he here?

He's coming.

Go.

Quickly.

Follow him.

Chen Jun!

Chen Jun, wait up!

Ride faster!

I wish there was a ham in the bun.

There's no time.

He's back.

[Sanhe Local Food Restaurant]

You stay and watch them.

I'm going to follow him.

Where is he?

He's in there.

Didn't he abscond with the money?

Why is he secretly meeting with Xu Yi?

Liu Changshui didn't run away.

It was just fake news put on by Xu Yi.

Anyway, do you know Liu Changshui well?

Well, I know he's Liu Xun's dad.

What does he do?

I think he works at a factory.

We will know more about him.

Just ask Qingli to go to her dad's office

and look up the information secretly.

Let's wait for a bit.

He's coming.

He's out.

Sure thing, Mr. Zhang.

I'll be there in a jiffy.

It's no trouble.

Mr. Xu.

We already agreed.

How much money have you received? Why should I give you more?

Come on, let's go.

Hurry up.

Which way did he go?

I have no idea.

We're too slow on our bikes.

There's no way we could catch up with him.

It's too late to say anything now.

How about following him again tomorrow?

Zhou Luo, it's Liu Changshui's car.

Zhou Luo.

Liu Changshui is following Xu Yi.

We can just follow Liu Changshui.

Wait, hold on, Zhou Luo.

There's a taxi.

Mister!

It's too eye-catching if all the four of us go together.

You two wait here and watch the bikes.

We'll go.

Okay.

You guys be careful.

Be careful, don't be found out.

Mister, please follow the car ahead.

[Sanhe Local Food Restaurant]

What's in the box?

Money.

Quickly, photograph them!

He's out.

What's the matter?

Are you all right?

I'm fine.

I'm fine.

[18 days after the incident,] I wasn't there

[(January 18th, 2000)] during the countdown of the millennium.

I went to look for Zhou Luo.

He received admission to Jinghua with a reduced score.

We were happy for him.

Initially, we planned to take a group photo

during the fireworks show.

But then Chen Jun and Liu Xun got into a fight.

That bastard, Liu Xun.

I've been wanting to teach him a lesson.

He wants to compete with Zhou Luo?

He's no match for him.

Zhou Luo wasn't there when I beat Liu Xun up.

I think

his mom asked him

to go help at the stall.

The light in the room upstairs was off.

So I sat on the doorstep to wait.

I didn't know he had a stomachache.

It wasn't like I could've knocked on the toilet door.

Anyway, I went home after waiting for a while.

I think I saw Xu Yi.

He was hitting Nan Ya by the river.

Yeah.

It was them.

I didn't check the time then.

But it must have been before 12:30 AM. Because...

Because...

Because the fireworks were still on.

I saw what happened

at the train station that day.

The whole town knew about it.

Although I don't have a good impression of her,

if I must choose,

I will definitely still be on Chen Ling's side.

I wouldn't dare to speak with her.

She and my sister had a bad history.

Everyone knows about it.

If I had spoken to her,

my sister would've hit me badly.

The sole reason why Zhou Luo fought with Xu Yi

was because Xu Yi was being rough and abusive.

If it was me, I couldn't have stood it either.

Who wants to get involved with that couple's business anyway?

It's stressful enough repeating a year at school.

Nobody has the time or energy to worry about her.

The point is that I'm going to get into a national key university.

I cannot handle another year of cram school.

Yes, Zhou Luo often went to study at the library.

Most of the time, we were there together.

We bumped into Nan Ya occasionally.

Anyway,

we aren't close to her.

Zhou Luo doesn't belong to our cram school.

He's not like us.

[Qingshui Library]

Zhou Luo.

Why are you here?

Well... It's on the way.

Let's go together.

Zhou Luo.

I recently watched a pretty good movie.

Andy Lau is the starring role.

It's a story about a thief

who is about to die.

Thus, he decides to seek revenge on his dad's nemesis.

He joins hands with a policeman

who used to against him.

When he is on the run,

he kidnaps a woman.

They end up having a crazy and romantic relationship.

Really?

What's the title? I don't think I've seen it.

I don't remember the title.

My dad... He's agreed to not ask me to repeat another year.

I want to go to the police academy.

That's good.

So, Qing... About Qingli.

She's been studying really hard lately.

I think it's because of you.

Well.

I'm almost home.

You should head back.

Okay.

I'll be off.

Zhou Luo.

Are we buddies?

Why are you suddenly asking that?

I don't have many good qualities.

But I'm loyal.

Just tell me the truth.

I promise I won't tell anyone else.

What truth?

Did you kill him?
