that had never been done.

It changed
the music industry,

and it certainly changed
the concert industry.

It took
outrageous musical artistry

and made it
a global phenomenon.

We're traveling around,

All these years later,

it's still
such a great festival.

But the thing that a lot
of people don't understand is

this started out
with Perry Farrell

and Jane's Addiction.

Perry Farrell is

the heart and soul
of Lollapalooza.

When I started Lollapalooza,

all I thought this was,
was a farewell party

for my band,
Jane's Addiction.

♪ Gimme that, gimme back ♪

♪ That automobile,
turn off that smokestack ♪

♪ And that goddamn radio ♪

♪ Hum along with me ♪

♪ Hum along with the TV ♪

I am not...

...music business.
I'm an artist.

I want the greatest musicians

to be heard and seen.

But not if
we're going to sell out.

Not if we're going
to take the easy way out.

It's been my struggle.

Money doesn't always help art.

In fact,
too much money destroys art.

I didn't know
I was going to be a musician.

I came out to California
to surf and skate.

And these guys
that I was working with

as a graphic artist,

they started
the Desolation Center.

We're not going to be...

standing on a stage
performing for people.

The whole environment is
going to be our stage,

and we're going to be
using that.

We went out into the desert,

completely illegally,

and they were finding groups

like Einsturzende Neubauten

and Sonic Youth.

That was my indoctrination

into the Los Angeles

underground music scene
and art scene.

That was the beginnings

of the ideas
for Lollapalooza.

It was outside the status quo.

You know, it's where
all the fuck-you heroes exist.

When I moved to Hollywood,
I did not know at the time

that there was
a bubbling underground scene.

One night,
my friend Adam Jones,

who had later surfaced
in the band Tool,

took me to
a different kind of bar

with different kinds
of bands in it.

They were making art
for art's sake.

They were making something
that was very, very authentic.

The shows were all
do-it-yourself.

And the scene was one
that was completely

kind of self-created.

And the high priests
of that scene

were a band called
Jane's Addiction.

their own opinion ♪

♪ Their own opinion ♪

♪ Holding it back ♪

♪ Hurts so bad ♪

♪ Jumping out of my flesh,
and I said ♪

Well, what kind of
music do you do?

It's kind of a cross
between, uh...

I would say Duke Ellington

and...

- And Bad Brains.
- And Bad Brains.

It was punk rock.

There was, like,
200 kids diving off the stage

and getting
into mosh pits.

You know,
it was like one of these--

my mouth was on the ground.

♪ I was coming
down the mountain ♪

Don Muller, my partner,
took me to maybe

maybe the second gig
they ever did.

Right then,
I think live music

from a darker place
went next level.

♪ We had the same opinion ♪

And they all came out
on stage in diapers.

Who are these people?

♪ And I say... ♪

♪ You better cash in! ♪

Perry was
the greatest frontman

I ever saw.

It's like lightning bolts are

shooting through his body.

He's like, you know...
with the most energy

I've seen of a human being.

♪ Yeah! ♪

Stephen Perkins
is an incredible drummer.

Eric Avery drove the band
with those incredible

bass lines and grooves.

And then Dave Navarro's
guitar playing.

You know, it brought you back
to the things that

you loved about Led Zeppelin
and other heavy bands.

Jane's Addiction
should be credited for

kicking down the door

for the true
alternative explosion.

A lot of people think about
Nirvana busting it wide open.

Personally, I think
Jane's busted it wide open.

Sounds like a bunch of kids

just getting
into no-good trouble.

But...

It actually...

we were-- we were
creating culture.

But I didn't know that.

But that's
where culture always...

Culture always comes
from that place.

It... It is not
a trickle down.

Okay. Come on.

Is that picking me up?
Am I on? Okay.

Hi, I'm Kurt Loder
with MTV News.

We're in East Hollywood,
so I'm told,

with Jane's Addiction,
a band you're gonna be

hearing a lot more about
when their album comes out

later this year
on Warner Brothers.

Were you surprised
when this big bidding war

broke out among
all these record companies?

Suddenly you were, like,
the hottest thing in LA.

Were you shocked,
or did you think it was--

- Not at all.

I had not one shred of a doubt

that they were gonna do
whatever the fuck they wanted,

and good luck,
Warner Brothers.

That's what-- I was
crystal clear on that.

And that's what happened.

So, Jane's Addiction,

"Nothing Shocking,"
I mean, that was

such a bellwether
for the subculture

being represented
in a way that had

major label muscle, money,

and ultimately exposure.

But at the time,
Perry's still an artist.

He's making album covers

that are art, that are
then getting banned

and then having to release
a censored album cover.

Censorship has taken
a small shot to the head

in Royal Oak, Michigan,
the town where police

last week, acting
on a single anonymous

telephone complaint,
entered a local record store

and seized
a poster advertising

the new
Jane's Addiction album.

Eight
out of 12 major retailers

refused to carry
"Nothing Shocking."

That seemed
like a looming disaster,

but what it did was just
make people really curious.

We are asking
the recording industry

to voluntarily assist parents
who are concerned

by placing a warning label
on music products.

This is a time
of the PMRC,

of Tipper Gore,
of arguments

about the danger
of rock and roll,

that this is going
to corrupt teenagers.

And so it made
Jane's Addiction

that much hotter
of a commodity.

We're trying
to make adults sick.

Didn't Wim Hof say,
you know,

dunk yourself in the bucket
of ice every morning?

It's good for your immune
system to be shocking.

So, yeah, there you go.
I'm helping humanity.

The last weekend in August,

festival season wrapped up
in Reading, England,

where over 40,000 people

watched over
60 alternative bands.

It's nice for a change
to actually go

and play outdoors.
This is an open air festival.

- That's neat, you know?
-What do fans think

makes a festival better
than a plain old concert?

It's in a gig.
You just go for a few hours,

and then you get home again.
Whereas here you can just

get drunk
for the whole weekend.

It's just the atmosphere.

When everyone's
outside together.

It's totally different
to the rest of your life.

Reading was a cornucopia

of artists and scenes

and curation,
and it was such a vibe.

I remember saying,
"Perry, we have to do it."

- One, two!

At that time,
we were rocking.

Jane's Addiction was
going off...

and England was
waiting for us.

That's a big deal
on a musician from America.

Jane's is now
a big deal in London.

So, they played a club show
the day before Reading.

Everybody's pogo-ing
in the club.

The walls are sweating.

It's 300 seats.

They finish.

I remember
saying bye to them.

We're standing
in the alley after the gig.

And...

then they went off, okay?

Went back to the hotel,
or whatever they did.

Next morning, Ted Gardner,

who was their tour manager,

God rest his soul,

said, "We got
to cancel Reading."

And I was like, what?
"Perry lost his voice."

♪ Three days was
the morning ♪

What did I do?
I go and get so fucked up...

I lost my voice.

♪ Oh... ♪

So I ended up not seeing...

Reading at all.

♪ Covered now
by three days ♪

But my attitude
with Jane's Addiction was

that my work
with them...

for now was wrapping up.

We... really couldn't
stand each other.

Either Eric had
decided to leave,

or Perry had decided,
that's enough, whatever,

and I'm going to end this...
which was pretty sad.

And so they decided to do
their farewell tour.

And I'm like,
"I'm going down to Reading."

And Stephen Perkins,

who's called Perky
for a reason, says,

"Let's go. I'm not--
I'm not sitting around here

in the hotel," and we go
spend the weekend at Reading.

♪ I just want a lover
like any other ♪

♪ What do I get? ♪

It was like
being in a party

of all your favorite bands.

♪ What do I get? ♪

♪ Oh... what do I get? ♪

So I think
I turned to Perkins and said,

"Why don't we just do this

in America
as your farewell tour?"

And he said, "Oh, my God,
that's a great idea.

Let's go back
to the hotel and tell 'em."

And Perry fell in love
with the idea.

Everybody fell in love
with the idea.

♪ What do I get? ♪

Hearing from Marc,
all the shit that I missed,

like what I could have
participated in,

I just started to imagine

what would happen
if we did it.

Perry said,
"I wanna leave on a high note.

"I want to do a summer tour.

"I want to have
seven opening acts.

"I want to have
giant burritos,

"and I want art,
and I want political boosts.

"I want the NRA
set up next to PETA.

I want to be
completely subversive."

And it's like, okay...

seven opening acts,
all this stuff,

and we got some months
to figure it out.

Okay, I guess
we're gonna figure it out.

♪ You hear laughter ♪

♪ Cracking through the walls,
it sends you spinning ♪

We round-robin'd around
the room, everybody picked

their favorite band.

Dave said Siouxsie.

I said Pixies
and Nine Inch Nails.

♪ Head like a hole,
black as your soul ♪

Eric said Butthole Surfers.

Who said Rollins?

I wonder if it was Ted
who wanted Rollins.

That might have been it.

- * Man, I see you... ♪
- Perry said Ice-T.

♪ Body Count's in the house ♪

We went
and got everybody but...

The Pixies.

And so then,
we decided at the time,

Living Colour was blowing up.

Vernon and Living Colour was
on that Reading Festival.

They got the slot
that The Pixies turned down.

♪ Look in my eyes ♪

♪ What do you see? ♪

We opened
for the Rolling Stones.

And I was really
looking forward to going

in the studio and working
on our next record,

you know, 'cause we've been
touring kind of nonstop.

But it was
impressed upon me,

there's this festival that

you're being invited to be on,
and you should do it.

♪ Cult of personality ♪

Got a call at
1:00, 1:30 in the morning.

It was Perry.

"Geiger, I got the name!

Lollapalooza.
It's a lollapalooza."

I'm like,
what the hell is that?

It's something
and-or someone

great or wonderful.

- Huh? What?
- And it's a giant,

swirling,
colorful lollipop.

It was as if
it belonged to me forever.

We bought
something like 2,000,

2,500 lollipops,

and I had
the press release printed

in white ink
on red cellophane.

We wrapped that paper around
each and every lollipop,

and that's what was sent out
to the press.

At the time,
nobody had done this.

There was no blueprint
for this whatsoever.

It is hard enough
to do one festival,

one festival day per year,

let alone tour
with a touring festival.

It's insane.

In 1991,

there was 28 cities.

It was just a main stage.

And we said,
"Okay, we'll do it."

not knowing, of course,
if we knew how to do it,

but we tried to figure it out.

You have to understand
that alternative music

back in 1991

didn't sell 18,000 seats,
not even close.

But Perry believed
that alternative music was

much bigger than

the radio stations were
being led to think.

We had to convince
the whole music industry

that we were going to do this,

so we would find people
in their offices,

or we'd find people
through the radio stations,

or we'd find people
at record stores.

Whatever we had to do.

It was like...

will people buy a ticket?
Will people show up?

Two-one-two,
two-two-two-two-two!

One-two, check one-two
two-two-two-two.

- Okay.
- Whoa! Two-one.

And... whoa!

Hi, I'm Kurt Loder,
and this is the day in rock

for July 18th, 1991.

If you're tired of seeing
the same old bands

going out on
the same old tours,

then you'll definitely want
to keep an eye out

for a wild new
multi-act outing

called the Lollapalooza Tour.

Here at Compton Terrace,
just outside

Phoenix, Arizona,
the temperature

is over a hundred degrees,
and the excitement is

running high,
as the band sound check

for the opening night
of the Lollapalooza Tour.

Phoenix,
Compton Terrace, first show...

106, 110?

It's 106.

No cans, no bottles.

I'm going to say 109.

Once you're in, you're in.

I think it was 115 degrees.

Vernon, is it hot
enough for you?

Yeah.

It was the hottest day

in the history of the world,

and...

We're starting
at 1:00 or 2:00,

and people are
out there in black.

- Are you hot at all?
- Yeah, I am.

I'm really hot.
I just moved here.

I'm not used
to this weather.

I got the air-conditioned
clothing, all holes.

Nice, lets a breeze through,
you know? Keep it cool.

Light colors.
Nothing too dark

except my boots, you know?
It's hot out in the sun.

It was bad.
It was bad.

It is a test.

Because you're exerting
the energy of...

pro wrestler.

So, in the mornings,
Henry would be pumping iron.

There was
a weight set set up

right back--
you know, intimidatingly.

You had to cross
the threshold.

It's almost like-- imagine
if Arnold Schwarzenegger

was punk rock.

What if they locked you
in here all day?

What if they just put up
fences with German razor wire

all around this?

And what if they turned it
into a concentration camp?

And they passed out

one gallon of water
for all of you?

Cecil B. DeMille said, like,
what's... when he was asked,

you know, how do you create
a great epic movie?

He said, start with
an apocalypse and work up.

I think the Rollins Band
kind of, like, fulfilled that.

Uh...

extreme mental discipline.

Six days a week
of weight training,

Climbing the rope,
doing the bar dips,

and, uh...

a real belief
in the total apocalypse.

Do you think
that your place on this bill

reflects an increase
in respectability

for Nine Inch Nails
in particular

and industrial music
in general?

I don't know.
I mean, I don't know

that we're really
an industrial band.

We've been tagged as that,
and I don't mind it.

At the time, I found
that I liked the sound

of... a drum machine.

And I like
the sound of a computer

playing something
super rhythmic

for certain things.

And that became what
Nine Inch Nails was about.

We had a four-track
cassette tape player on stage

where one track was a click.
The drummer would play, too.

And if there was
something that I wanted

the sound of the computer
or the precision of that,

a sequence of some sort,
we'd put that

on a playback track.

You know, today
everybody does that,

or it's all playback
or whatever it is.

It was a different world,
but at the time

it felt like...

you could be picked on
for your tape deck

being seen, right?
It's cheating.

♪ You give me the reason ♪

♪ You give me control ♪

So Henry
and I were watching them

for the first time.

And things were starting
to sound real weird.

♪ Did you think
I wouldn't recognize... ♪

What do you not
want to happen...

when you've got
a tape deck on stage?

There's only two things
that can fuck up.

The tape breaks, you know,
and the tape machine breaks.

♪ Lies, lies, lies... ♪

One of those happened
in the worst way

during the first song
because it stops for a second,

- duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh--

Uh-oh, but then
it comes back on a little bit.

So, it's not broke,
but something's just enough

that you're not--
you look and say,

"What the fuck's happening?"

♪ ...everything, well then,
just give me a taste ♪

Nine Inch Nails' equipment,
of course, had heat stroke.

He did
the only thing one could do.

He's gonna
punish the equipment.

And equipment got
thrown around,

and they stormed off stage.

I didn't know
what else to do.

What the fuck?!

So, I remember being
on the bus like, oh, my God,

why-- I can't believe.

"MTV's here."

Well, we were officially
the first casualty

of the Lollapalooza Tour here
in Phoenix, Arizona.

And I guess
what happened is

a lot of our equipment
in the back was

sitting in the sun
for quite a long time,

baking in the desert heat.

And since we are
an electronic-based

kind of band,
when the main part

of your sound becomes
ruined and melted,

which I think is
what happened,

it was cutting out and just
becoming a nightmare.

That was the first band
I've ever seen walk off stage

and not perform.

And people were
not happy with that.

We came here to see them
and have a good time

and stuff, party with them,
and their equipment messed up.

I can understand they want
their equipment to sound good

and stuff, but they just
bugged out on us.

That wasn't cool, so...

From a business perspective,

what are we going to do?

Jesus. Do we have
to give refunds?

Trent and the band
are very sorry

about what happened,
but shit happens,

and they're dealing with it
the best they can.

They just couldn't go on
with that show.

So, please hold on
to your stubs because

they're gonna make it up
to each and every one of you.

We didn't have
our shit together.

You know, glance over
at Living Colour,

and it's rack after rack
of professionally--

you know, like, looks like
fucking NASA, you know?

We've got...

We didn't know
what we were doing, so...

Elvis has left the building.

Living Colour was
a very, very important part

of Lolla '91.

And never really
got the credit

as one of the cornerstones

of building
the alternative arc.

Until Living Colour,

you don't really see
that many Black people

playing rock music
on the radio

since Jimi Hendrix.

They opened the door for bands
like Rage Against Machine.

Without Living Colour,
Rage Against the Machine

doesn't get
a record deal ever.

One of the hottest

rock and roll tours
this summer

is a real Lollapalooza.

Mark Shearer reports on
what all the noise is about.

Live, in "Living Colour,"

it's the Lollapalooza
Festival.

In a summer of slumping
concert ticket sales,

this is one of the few tours
that's packing them in.

It's a traveling
all-day festival featuring

seven of the loudest
of what are called

alternative rock acts.

I just think it's a place
where everyone can come and be

cool with each other,
and listen to music

- and learn from each other.
-In between sets,

thought-provoking messages are
flashed to the crowd.

And in a tent,
an array of

politically-correct
organizations

do their best
to proselytize.

This could be
a huge commercial...

extravaganza, propaganda
thing, but it's not.

And it's being used
to hopefully

open a few eyes up
to alternative ideas,

alternative ways
of looking at things.

My idea for Lollapalooza

was to do things
other than music.

That's pretty cool.
Think you'll get a real one?

I wanted an art gallery.

With all underground,
emerging artists.

This piece right here
is called

"Shaking Off
the Albatross."

And also... nonprofits.

Back in the '90s, I worked for

the Surfrider Foundation,
an environmental group

for ocean-related issues.

I was in the office

when somebody called
and said,

"The Lollapalooza Tour,
headlined by Jane's Addiction,

"would like
Surf Rider Foundation

to go out on the road
as one of our nonprofits."

We're really pleased
with the turnout.

Everybody's been
really cool to us.

People were kind of coming

to Lollapalooza,
looking for information.

This is a petition
to help protect

access to health clinics.

- To clinics for abortion.
- Right.

- And health care.
- And health care.

And this one is to...

block the nomination
of Clarence Thomas

to the Supreme Court.

It's a petition to overturn

Clarence Thomas's nomination.

They jump. They're like,
"Where do I sign?" You know?

And how fast can they sign?
And they go get their friends.

Communication was
radically different

because there was no Google--
couldn't look this shit up.

We knew that
there'd be a lot of

animal rights supporters
here at Lollapalooza,

but there's
so many vegetarians.

It seems like the youth
of America has gone veggie.

- It's great.
-Everybody was

fully invested.

Their attention was all-in.

There was no phones.

Well, we're here to build

support for the Brady Bill,
and we're trying

to get President Bush
to sign it into law.

He said he's gonna be
supportive, and we just

wanna make sure he hears
from people who support

a seven day waiting period
on handguns.

Lolla '91 was this...

Johnny Appleseed tour.

That was the Declaration
of Independence

of the alternative nation.

It was like
"Revenge of the Nerds."

Back in the '90s,

I knew there was
something bubbling

on the underground
for the youth movement that

was happening,
because I was part of it,

my friends were part of it.

Lollapalooza was
the beginning of Generation X

making the world known
that they were here.

I love you.

It was a complete
gathering of the misfits

that had one thing in common,
which was music.

I mean, if that's what society
wants to call me is a fag,

maybe I'm proud of it.

You had the goth kids,

you had
the punk rockers,

you had the intellectuals

that would wear
Buddy Holly glasses

and the surfers
and the skaters.

- Who did you come to see?
- Jane's Addiction.

- Ice-T.
- O.G.!

Original gangster!

Jane's Addiction.
Definitely Jane's Addiction.

- Definitely Nine Inch Nails!
- Butthole Surfers!

Living Colour.
Siouxsie and the Banshees.

They're all good.

it's the first

American...

truly eclectic
concert series...

since Woodstock.

And even Woodstock wasn't
as eclectic,

because Woodstock was
pretty much all rock.

Yeah, my dad went
to Woodstock.

- Really?
- Yeah.

And you're like,
is he happy that

- you're here right now?
- He doesn't know

where the hell I am right now.

- Really?
- Yeah.

You don't talk to him at all?

Well, I do,
but not very often.

He bitches at me about

my nose ring
and shit, so...

Well, the Gen X, I mean,
these are the children

of the divorces--
the hippie divorce.

- Were your parents hippies?
- No, they're yuppies.

Now they're yuppies, though.

Are you gonna
do more drugs today?

-These are the kids

that saw all that hope

and how their parents
even betrayed those ideals

and became materialistic.

Gen X had
no pretensions to hope.

When Perry Farrell
of Jane's Addiction conceived

a Lollapalooza tour,
the idea wasn't just

to feature a wide-ranging
musical lineup.

Jane's Addiction, Iced T,

Siouxsie and the Banshees
and others are

consistently filling
the venues they play.

It was incredible.
It was killer.

It was stupendous.
I can't believe it.

It was mind-blowing.
I was totally blown away.

I couldn't-- I saw
the crowd. They rocked.

- Paul, what do you think?
- Ditto.

Lollapalooza '91 is
covered really heavily

by MTV and MTV News

and alternative radio.

♪ Booze, tobacco ♪

♪ Dope, pussy ♪

And so you had
huge word of mouth.

Everybody being
really excited,

going...
what the fuck is this?

Whoa!

After
the first show in Phoenix,

I think
every band was like,

okay, this thing is
off and humming.

At some point,
Fishbone played a few shows.

Everybody had big sets.

It's my first chance
in front of 20,000 people

in America,
and everybody was powerful.

I think everybody knew
and ultimately felt, wow...

I'm sort of lucky to be here,

I'm part of something,
you know.

It was bigger
than anything

any of these artists or fans
have seen at that time.

Siouxsie was the grandam.

I think,
out of that whole lineup,

to everybody, she was
the legendary, iconic artist.

Shh.

I don't think
I said very much to her

the whole tour
because I was scared shitless.

♪ These words in shadowplay ♪

It never felt like we were...

in competition, necessarily,
with anyone else.

And this felt more like
there's a curious audience...

...who are not distracted
by other things to do

because there's one stage,

and they were
receptive to ideas.

Let me tell you a little bit
about rock and roll.

Rock and roll has
its own community.

You have Slayer Avenue.

Anthrax Road.

Up in the suburbs,
you have Bon Jovi Court.

But, Ernie,
why don't you tell us

what the rock community
as a whole said

when five
motherfucking niggas

walked into the first
rock club with guitars.

You know what they said?

There goes the neighborhood!

ICE-T: Lollapalooza's
all white kids.

Because white kids can
afford the tickets.

They can afford
the tour jackets,

the T-shirts
and everything.

It's like... okay.

So this is
when it starts to change,

where the music is starting
to infect everybody,

and you're like...
they're with this.

You know why?
'Cause I'm a cop killer!

That 1991 Lollapalooza tour

was just months after
the Rodney King beating,

and here he was singing
"Cop Killer" on stage

in front
of 12,000 white kids

with Slayer T-shirts,
losing their fucking minds.

Metal was using

imagery of the devil.

You got Dio and them,
and they sing about

dragons and shit, right?

I'm not gonna sing about that.
I'm going to sing about...

the devil I know.

I've never been out there

promoting murdering cops.

♪ Cop killer,

So they want to be
remembered

I was really a deep fan,

and it was always
a privilege to be able

to just hang around
and watch 'em... you know,

and see what was
going to happen,

because it was
also a pretty chaotic,

combustible time then.

The band was incredible.
Perry was amazing.

They went on to be
one of my favorite bands.

I felt that
it was great right there.

The best work we did,

we left on the stage
at Lolla.

I'd just came from this...

Lollapalooza
and Jane's Addiction.

And now I don't know
what I'm gonna do.

And it felt kind of nice.
There was tranquility.

I felt very free.

I had nothing,
not even an idea.

But Marc called me.

And said,
"Guess who's gonna be doing

Lollapalooza this year?"

"What?" I said,
"What are you talking about?"

"We're doing it again.
We've got to do it again."

And the Chili Peppers
already want to do it."
