Episode 9

Grandfather.

Your Highness.

Your Highness?

Your Highness the Crown Prince!

How hard must it have been for you?

You came to the right place.

I am glad you are here.

Your grandson greets you.

Please do not.

This is my childhood friend, Gab Seok.

Allow me to greet you.

My name is Lee Gab Seok.

She is a physician who came with us because of my wound.

Have you been injured?

I got better thanks to this girl, so please do not worry.

What a relief.

Thank you for your work.

The day is cold. Please come inside.

Take her to the annex

and tell the butler His Highness has arrived.

Yes.

Please come inside.

Are you asking because you really do not know?

The moment he runs his mouth, let alone the crown princess selection—

I will not try out for the crown princess selection.

- Hurry up and go to a clinic- - I cannot go to the clinic.

That man does not even know it was you who kidnapped him.

So why are you doing this?

I just cannot understand why you are trying to kill that man.

I never asked for your understanding.

So, the lady you serve is ...

Does this mean you were a servant of the royal physician's household?

Answer me.

Are you truly the Royal Physician's servant?

So, that is what happened.

I knew there had to be a reason.

But it was the traitors slandering Your Highness.

I apologize for putting you and Uncle in danger as well.

How could you say that?

Please do not ever say that again.

Yes, Your Highness.

Father and I will make sure you are safe, no matter what happens.

No.

It is true I need Grandather's help, but I do not plan on staying long.

I am sure Mungyeong also received a messenger by now.

If they find out I am here, they will come arrest me right away.

Do not worry about the governor of Mungyeong.

I will take care of things.

Traitor Yi Geon, you are under arrest!

We know Traitor Yi Geon is hiding here!

If you do not hand over Yi Geon right now,

everyone who lives in this house will be considered a traitor!

What is there to wait for?

Let us storm in now.

Must we shed blood?

We have surrounded him, so he will come out eventually.

If he still does not come out,

we can do as you wish, Chief Guard.

Traitor Yi Geon, you are under arrest!

Watch your mouth!

Whom are you calling a traitor?

Your Excellency!

This is Her Highness Queen Dowager's letter.

There is no need to read that.

Please hand it to me.

How dare you? You dare toss a letter containing the royal decree—

This letter is a fake!

- Gab Seok! - Yes, Your Highness!

Do you know what this is?

This is the royal seal His Majesty the King ordered me to take care of!

His Majesty's will lies in my hand.

Who dares to impersonate His Majesty?

Arrest those traitors who dared to fabricate the royal seal

and write a fake royal decree!

Yes, Your Excellency!

Arrest those traitors right now!

Yes, sir!

Her Highness the queen sends you this.

She said they were jewelry and clothing.

Your Highness, I think you have to look at this.

Is it not the royal seal?

I am ...

a bad son who causes her to worry till the end.

I am sure my Royal Mother will be put through

great troubles because of this royal seal.

How will I ever

repay her for this?

His Majesty must have known a situation like this would arise.

Yes.

He predicted I would be put in this situation

and gave me a way to survive.

I can only be thankful for Father's endless grace.

Even if we lock up the Chief of the Patrol Guards and his men,

the palace will be waiting to hear from them.

So we must prepare a plan quickly.

I have thought of what to do regarding that matter.

Please tell the governor to prepare a messenger to be sent to the palace.

People would think you are spying.

That is not it ...

Follow me.

Even if you are only a servant, you work for the royal physician.

Refrain from arousing suspicion.

I shall call you if I need you,

so do not enter the men's quarters without permission again.

All right.

By the way, why did His Highness become deposed?

Could it be related to why he was taken to the Royal Investigation Bureau last time?

Why do you have so many questions when you're just a servant girl?

If you're so curious, you can ask your lady later.

My lady does not know the answer, either.

You can ask your master, then.

They want to see you at the men's quarters.

- It is seolyamyeok*. - It is not a snowy night today. (Cooked meat grilled again after cooling with ice)

But I prepared it because I heard you like it.

How did you know I like seolyamyeok?

After I left the capital, His Majesty sent me letters every year.

He mostly talked about you besides the greeting.

I found out you like seolyamyeok thanks to His Majesty's letter as well.

Father.

All right.

All right. Please help yourself now.

These are special cows that were fed ground medicinal stones.

Sorry? You made a cow eat stones?

Have you heard of zeolites?

I have never heard of such a thing.

Have you heard of it?

Yes, geolites contain a lot of beneficial energies for the body

and it is called a medicinal stone because it cleanses the body.

You are right.

But it is still a stone, so we cannot eat it as it is.

We first feed it to animals such as cows and pigs.

And we eat those animals.

Cows that were fed medicinal stones lost the stench and became tender.

Go on. Please take a bite.

It is melting in my mouth! Is that not right, Your Highness?

You are right. It is truly tender and delicious.

It does not have any odor whatsoever.

You can only enjoy this in Mungyeong.

All right, now. Please eat to your heart's content.

Yes. You should have some as well, Grandfather.

I am fine.

It really melts in your mouth!

It has such a pretty color.

You are right.

Where does this get its color from?

It is fruit syrup made with five-flavor fruits.

Five-flavor fruits?

Do you also know a bit about five-flavor fruits?

The fruit is sweet and sour, but the seed is spicy and bitter.

Altogether, it tastes sour, which is why it is called a five-flavor fruit.

Do you also know its benefits?

According to "Great Pharmacopoeia" and "Dongui Bogam,"

it is said to enhance a man's stamina.

A man's stamina.

It has many other benefits besides that.

But I also know it is good for digestion.

She is better than most physicians, Your Highness.

I would not keep just anybody in my company.

Are you inside, Oh Wol?

Please go inside, Your Highness.

These are new cotton cloths.

Give him treatment and replace the old ones.

Did his wound get infected again?

No way.

Everyone knows you as a physician.

If he comes to see you again when he is not even in pain,

would they not be suspicious?

It looks like you were quite shocked.

Please forgive me, Your Highness.

Forgive you for what?

I have committed a crime I should not have against you.

I mean, you threw medicinal herbs at me

and plastered charcoal soot all over me.

You were quite rude and impolite, Baek Gu.

However, you did those things without knowing who I am.

I lied about my identity, so I should be the one apologizing.

Not at all, Your Highness.

Please forgive me, Your Highness.

Whether I am a scholar or a crown prince,

you are my lifesaver, and you have saved me from death many times.

And the fact I made it this far safely, all thanks to you, does not change.

So, you can stop doing that now.

Your Highness ...

What is the matter?

Are you worried about the future since you found out who I am?

You are a bright child,

so you must be worried about what will happen to your master

who tried to kill a nation's crown prince.

You must be worried about your lady as well.

You are right.

I do not have the slightest intent to forgive your master.

No matter what happens,

I will make your master pay for his crimes without fail

and your lady...

cannot stay out of harm's way when that happens.

However,

I am going to protect you.

I am going to protect you, no matter what.

So stay with me.

Your Highness.

I am ...

I am not lying.

I sincerely ...

do not want to harm you.

Your Highness ...

in fact ...

I am ...

Your Highness, the master is asking for you.

I must get going.

Let us talk about this again at a later time.

It looks like you are a crybaby, Baek Gu.

Do not cry.

I said it is all right.

Your Highness!

Nothing will happen to you if you are with me.

So do not worry and relax.

Isn't Baek Gu acting strange?

What do you mean?

Never mind.

What does he want to see me for?

He said he sent a messenger to Hanyang.

Deposed Crown Prince Yi Geon was arrested and sent over right away.

A messenger came from Mungyeong.

The deposed crown prince was arrested.

What brings you here, Head Eunuch?

His Majesty is in a critical state.

What is the matter?

Her Majesty said absolutely not to let the inspector general in.

Hurry up and announce me!

Your Majesty, Grand Prince Do Seong has arrived!

Your Majesty!

The Grand Prince has not even become the crown prince yet.

If His Majesty passes away like that,

will Queen Dowager and Choi Sang Rok not have second thoughts?

What did the physician the queen brought last time say?

You met him separately, did you not?

If you answer my questions with complete honesty right now,

I will let you go.

Is there a chance His Majesty will get better?

Zhen poison?

I heard it is a legendary poison (Zhen: a poison-feathered mythical bird)

passed down among physicians by word of mouth

because it has been lost over the years.

Anyway, how can he be sure it is Zhen poison?

The symptoms are similar to what his teacher told him

and there is no way the Royal Clinic would be

so clueless if it were any other poison besides Zhen poison.

In that case, His Majesty has to be ...

Choi Sang Rok is the only one who can cure him.

Why are you outside?

My chest feels heavy for some reason.

Does it feel like indigestion?

Should I bring you five-flavor fruit syrup?

Let me have a word with you.

I cannot leave right now. Let us have the talk another time.

I must have a word with you right now.

I will do everything you tell me to do.

If you tell me to become the crown prince, I will.

If you tell me to marry your daughter, I will.

I will also take responsibility to fend off Grandfather. Instead,

cure my father and ...

let Hyeong-nim be free.

You are demanding too much.

If the deposed crown prince is set free, it will surely bring us harm.

I will convince Hyeong-nim myself.

I will make him live in hiding where no one can find him.

If that is still not enough, I will make him leave this country

and make sure he never comes back to the palace.

You can do that.

Your Highness!

Instead,

don't forget your promise that you will take responsibility for everything from now on.

Do not ever forget that.

Do you understand?

Yes ...

Your Highness.

Open the doors.

Escort the queen to her palace.

I am not going.

You can have me killed instead!

It looks like the queen was severely shocked.

Go to the Queen's Palace and look after yourself first.

- I refuse. - What are you all doing?

Escort her to the Queen's Palace right now!

Let go. Let go of me!

Grand Prince, you must stop them.

You cannot trust them, Grand Prince!

Escort her.

Please come with us, Your Highness.

You cannot do this, Grand Prince!

What is that there?

It is a medical device used to remove the poison around the facial area.

He will soon breathe normally and stop vomiting blood as well.

Are you still in discomfort?

No.

I am fine now. You can rest easy.

Father has shown signs of recovery.

Is that true?

Yes.

I must go to his bedchambers.

I have ...

something to tell you.

Please calm down

and take a seat.

I have ...

decided to become the crown prince as they wanted.

- You cannot! - Mother!

You cannot become the crown prince!

I also know you and Father intend to make Hyeong-nim the king.

That is why

you also gave Hyeong-nim the royal seal.

You knew all along?

I had assumed so.

Were you ...

upset about it, by any chance?

I was not upset at all that you gave Hyeong-nim the royal seal!

However,

I was upset you had hidden that fact

even from me.

- My queen... - Yes, Your Majesty, I am here.

The royal seal ...

Give the royal seal ...

to the crown prince without fail. Make sure ...

no one knows.

Your Majesty. Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

You don't need to feel bad about it.

It is all my fault, my own lacking,

for I failed to be a trustworthy son!

That must also be why you are against me becoming the crown prince.

That is not it!

What is your reason for opposing, then?

I am too foolish

to understand what you are thinking, Mother.

There is no other way to save Father.

I must become

the crown prince.

Grand Prince!

I will be taking my leave now.

If I die as you order, Left State Councillor,

Father will be the next in line.

Because as long as Father is alive,

Do Seong cannot become the king.

Your Highness, should you not tell Grand Prince the truth instead?

The truth?

You want me to tell Grand Prince my father

will kill his father the king, once he becomes the crown prince?

Is something wrong?

Did I not tell you to fix that fiery temper of yours?

You are right.

- Pardon? - Forget it.

Your Highness ...

in fact ...

I am ...

You cannot.

You will not.

Where do you think I am going?

You are going to Oh Wol again.

If someone sees you going in and out of the annex this late at night—

I am going to the outhouse.

You can go ahead.

Go on and tell me.

What you were trying to tell me earlier in the day.

I am sure you had something to tell me.

Just what is it, for you to hesitate this much to say it?

It is fine. You can take your time to tell me later.

No, Your Highness.

I will tell you now.

Your Highness.

Yes.

In fact ...

In fact?

In fact,

I am not Oh Wol, the servant girl.

What do you mean by that?

You are not Oh Wol?

Royal Physician Choi Sang Rok is my father.

What did you ...

say just now?

I am Myeong Yun,

the royal physician's daughter, who was the cause

of your kidnapping.

The crime of having deceived Your Highness—

You can rest now.

You were kidnapped because of me.

You almost died and ended up getting chased because of me.

So, I wanted to do all I could to help.

I wanted to do all I could to protect you from my father.

However, for me to do that, I had to remain as Oh Wol the servant.

Since I cannot be by your side as the royal physician's daughter,

I wanted to be by your side, even if it meant becoming Oh Wol or Baek Gu.

So I deceived Your Highness.

I can understand

why you would pretend to be Oh Wol, given your circumstances.

Because I also hid my true identity.

However,

the reason I cannot say or listen to anything right now is

because you just have to be the royal physician's daughter, Maiden!

Of course, I cannot hold you guilty of your father's crimes.

I also know it's not your fault that you were born as his daughter. However ...

I can only think that with my head, and I just cannot take it to heart!

- The things your father did— - My father was not

trying to harm you intentionally, either.

He could not help but kidnap you, hearing his daughter would become a widow otherwise.

But he just happened to kidnap the crown prince.

What he did after was out of fear for what would happen.

So, have pity on my father, who lost his sense of judgment because of his child—

I do not want to hear it!

Have pity?

Can you say the same thing even if your father has committed murder?

Do not ever

mention your father again in front of me.

I will bring you to Hanyang, at least.

So do not tell anyone

you are ...

the royal physician's daughter until then.

Do you understand?

Yes.

♫ How much longer must I live to be able to forget? ♫

♫♫

Please forgive me, Your Highness.

♫♫

They said I delivered the poisoned croaker the crown prince gave me.

to Her Highness the Queen.

But it is the queen dowager's doing, not the queen's.

I will make sure to at least protect His Majesty's life.

♫ Because you were like the passing breeze ♫

♫ Tears flow because ♫

Your Highness... I am...

♫ I want to embrace you ♫

♫ I want to give you a hug ♫

♫ The longing floods me already ♫

♫ How much longer must I wait to be able to meet you? ♫

♫ Beyond this night, are you standing at that place? ♫

♫ Will I be able to meet you again someday? ♫

♫ Like the mysterious moonlight that fills the night ♫

♫ Please don't leave me ♫

♫ Because you were like the passing breeze ♫

♫ Tears flow because it hurts too much to breathe ♫

♫ I want to hug you ♫

♫ I want to give you a hug ♫

♫ The longing floods me already ♫

♫ You, you who forgot me is now getting away ♫

♫ Even if I am to live only secretly ♫

I have something to tell you, so come outside for a moment.

♫ It spreads uncontrollably ♫

♫ Just like the moon floating over there ♫

♫ Because it hurts too much to hear you say love me ♫

♫ Tears flow because it hurts too much to breathe ♫

Did you leave?

I cannot be that shameless and travel with you to Hanyang.

So I am leaving first.

Please forgive me for leaving without a word.

My Lady!

You were still chasing me?

Are you all right?

Are you hurt or unwell anywhere?

- I am not. - We will escort you home right away, then.

I still have an unfinished task from the master.

These men will escort you.

You two go to Hanyang with her ladyship.

Yes!

Let me have a word with you.

What are you so surprised about?

It has been quite a while since I traveled with him.

Did you think I still would not know he is the crown prince?

Hurry up and answer me.

Will you take me home or

will you keep pursuing the crown prince?

- My Lady— - If you give up on pursuing the crown prince

and go back with me,

I will go home willingly, without causing trouble.

However, if that is not the case,

I will beat up those men and run away.

Is it because you are scared to defy Father's order?

I will make sure Father will not harm—

I don't care what happens to me.

You come first for me, My Lady.

I will escort you home.

He seems to have stabilized a lot.

I am glad.

However, leaving Grand Prince Do Seong aside,

can we really trust the left state councillor?

Won't he change his mind?

I found a way to put the reins on the left state councillor.

So you don't need to worry.

Recently, Jangyewon* had received an accusation. (Government office in charge of all matters regarding slaves.)

Jangyewon received an accusation,

saying there is a bastard child among the officials, who hid his identity.

Then, you just need to impeach him if he turns out to be a bastard child, right?

The accused is ...

His Excellency the Left State Councillor.

Left State Councillor Yun Yi Gyeom's grandmother was originally a slave?

Yes, she was originally a servant girl's child.

But after the household she worked for was destroyed during the Japanese invasion,

it seems she pretended to be the madam's child,

and married Yun Yi Gyeom's grandfather.

That means Yun Yi Gyeom is also ...

Yes, according to the Maternal Hereditary Slavery Law,

descendants of Yun Yi Gyeom's grandmother, Bok Sun, all become slaves.

So, Yun Yi Gyeom is also a slave.

It seems that one of the master's descendants who were believed to be dead

still had Yun Yi Gyeom's grandmother's slave document.

They filed a report with Jangyewon, asking for the truth on this matter.

Was it confirmed? Is he really a bastard child?

Most slave documents stored in Jangyewon were burned during the Japanese invasion,

so it will take some time to confirm. However ...

once the slave document is proven authentic,

we will have Yun Yi Gyeom in our hands.

So we can get rid of him whenever we want.

You might not be able to confirm its authenticity, though.

That is why I am also interrogating people

about the left state councillor's family, to secure witnesses.

Does the left state councillor also know about his grandmother's status?

What did you say?

The inspector general's office is interrogating people about my family?

Yes. They are asking people about your grandmother.

Well, do you have an idea why?

Not at all.

I need to go home now.

You go and find out exactly what it is that Choi Sang Rok learned.

No. Find out Choi Sang Rok's weakness, too.

His weakness?

I doubt he has any weaknesses I can find.

If he has none, make one up and bring it to me!

Do not sit and wait for Choi Sang Rok to bring us down.

Find out anything you can!

Do you understand?

I wonder if the kindling I sent to Jangyewon is burning well.

Please do not be concerned.

We used bait that they just could not refuse.

So I am sure it has become a big fire by now.

I hope that is the case.

They could not trust each other from the beginning.

The queen dowager will need Yun Yi Gyeom's weaknesses

and Yun Yi Gyeom will end up a slave, from being

one of the most powerful people in this country,

if his grandmother's matter is revealed.

So they won't be able to avoid fighting each other.

How did you know to keep such proof with you?

I had prepared it just in case

Yun Yi Gyeom would get a different idea

when it is time for you to take the throne.

Grandfather.

I only did what I was supposed to do.

Now, then. I will see you in Hanyang.

Please take care until then.

Please take care as well, Your Highness.

Please stay strong as well, Uncle.

Please take care, Your Highness.

Did you deliver the petition?

I sent people to Sosu Academy, Dosan Academy, and Byeongsan Academy.

Good job.

Dear kings of all ages,

please protect His Highness.

Why are you holding onto it so dearly?

It is the good stuff for men.

Five-flavored fruit?

Sure. You can have all you want.

Uncle prepared it especially for you.

It is a royal descendant's duty to have many children.

I have more than enough stamina without it.

Did you send away Oh Wol because you have so much stamina?

What I meant was ...

Oh Wol suddenly disappeared,

but you did not say anything about it.

Did something really happen?

Your Highness!

What about Myeong Yun? Was she all right?

Yes. However ...

she already knew the kidnapped scholar is the deposed crown prince.

You should have asked for

His Highness' forgiveness when you realized he was the crown prince.

Did you so badly want to make me the crown princess?

Did you so badly want to become the king's father-in-law?

Sure. I wanted to make you the crown princess

and I also wanted to become the king's father-in-law.

Is that so wrong of a thing?

Yes, it is wrong.

Because I do not have the right to become the crown princess.

If you are talking about the kidnapping, there is nothing more to talk about.

The deposed crown prince has been arrested.

He will not survive it this time, for sure.

So, the kidnapping and all relevant happenings

will be buried along with the deposed crown prince.

If you understand, just prepare to become the crown princess.

The crown prince is not here,

so how can I become the crown princess?

The one who was arrested is the deposed crown prince, not the crown prince.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Grand Prince Do Seong will soon become the crown prince

and he will take your hand in marriage soon after. So ...

you will become the crown princess. Do you understand now?

That is an absolute nonsense.

After doing an unforgivable thing to his hyeong,

how can I marry his younger brother?

We committed such an act, so you must marry Grand Prince Do Seong

in order for you and our household to survive. How can you not see this?

The deposed crown prince has become enemies with our family now.

So Grand Prince Do Seong is the only one who can protect you—

Do you think Grand Prince Do Seong will marry me, knowing these facts?

He will marry you.

Because he already has feelings for you deep in his heart.

Maiden, why did you have to be born as the royal physician's daughter?

My Lady, why the long face?

Was the master seriously angry with you?

What are you so upset about?

You ran away from home and got caught.

Did you think he would just say "you did well" and forget about it?

Oh Wol, I need to get some rest.

Yes.

My Lady, are you unwell?

No. I am just exhausted. So I am going to go to sleep early.

Yes.

I am sure something is wrong.

I cannot tell what it is.

He will not survive it this time for sure.

So kidnapping and all relevant happenings

will be buried along with the deposed crown prince.

Grand Prince Do Seong will soon become the crown prince

and he will take your hand in marriage soon after.

So you will become the crown princess.

You were kidnapped because of me.

You almost died and ended up getting chased because of me.

So I wanted to do all I could to help.

I wanted to do all I could to protect you from my father.

Nothing good will come out of provoking them right now.

For now, refrain from visiting the Main Hall for a while—

I will not do that!

No matter what they say, I am going to stay by His Majesty's side.

Do you really not know what is going on?

You already know very well that ultimately, Choi Sang Rok

is the only one who can save Father.

Please trust your son and do as I say.

Your Highness. I also believe you should do as Grand Prince Do Seong says for now.

Mother.

I understand.

What is the matter?

Her Highness the Queen Dowager just cannot bring herself to eat.

She had many things happen to her lately.

I believe it is because she is heartbroken,

so, should we take her outside the palace for some fresh air?

Court Lady Kim, you have only been worrying about Her Highness all your life.

What else could I possibly wish for?

I only want ... Her Highness to find true inner peace.

If you keep skipping your meals, you will harm your health.

I just do not have much appetite,

so don't let it bother you.

What do you say we go to Bota Temple for a trip?

If we say we will leave the palace to make an offering to Buddha,

there will be a lot of opposition.

The queen dowager wishes to do so. Who would dare oppose it?

I will have such traitors killed for their crimes right away.

In that case, could I leave it to you, Inspector General?

Yes, please have faith in this humble one.

I do not want a showy procession.

Please make it a quiet trip.

I understand.

I will discuss this with the left state councillor and prepare.

So eat your meals for now.

You need energy to go on a trip, right?

Yes, Orabeoni.

The inspector general's office is interrogating people about my family?

This is the new wall gun* developed by the Firearms Agency. (a type of smoothbore firearm used in the 16th-18th centuries)

I heard your daughter is about to be sold off

because you could not pay back the money you borrowed.

You need to save your daughter, don't you?

When will the external palace at Anju be completed?

They said it would take all spring, at least.

I want to put down everything

and leave the palace to be with Grand Prince Gwang Chang as soon as I can.

Is it not possible for them to hurry up?

I will tell the Royal Treasury to hurry up.

Spring is soon to be here, so please stay strong, Your Highness.

Please take cover!

Your Highness!

Inspector General ...

Please wake up.

- Hurry up. Please. - Your Highness.

You have to escape, Your Highness!

Physician ... Where is the physician?

Hurry up and bring me the physician!

What are you all doing?

Take Her Highness to safety right now!

Yun Yi Gyeom... How dare you, you rascal, Yun Yi Gyeom!

Did you find a way to clear your name?

I do have an idea.

Why isn't he waking up?

Tell me how I can ease the queen dowager's anger even a bit.

Tomorrow is the investiture. What do we do?

The crown prince investiture and the wedding are to be done together.

What am I supposed to do now?

I will become the crown prince and protect everyone I cherish!

I hope you will remember me as a man who held you in his heart.
