Episode 8

Young Master.

Gab Seok.

Young Master.

Your Highness. Your Highness!

(Let's run off now. What do you say?)

(We cannot.)

(When can we escape if not now?)

(I said we cannot, did I not?)

(Arghhhh!)

Aigoo! Aigoo, I am dying!

Your Highness.

What are you doing? Stand them back up!

Yes!

What is this?

Scholar sir.

- Let's go. - What about my lady?

- O-Oh Wol— - Now is not the time.

Gab Seok has your lady.

You chase them. The rest of you, come with me!

Yes!

Clinic

I am sorry for bringing a sick person to a place like this.

I could not think of anywhere else that would be as safe.

I am sure you came back here because they would not even guess

you would have hidden here again.

Wait here for a moment.

Come here.

How are you feeling?

I am fine.

I am sure Gab Seok safely ran away with your lady.

So don't worry too much.

You also saw how fast he was, right?

To be honest, he is also better at martial arts than I am.

Is it too cold?

I am fine.

I am sorry to be a bother.

Get some sleep.

I will take a break, too.

Gosh, are you a dog that needs to poop or something?

What?

I cannot hear myself think, so please stay put.

I am doing this because I cannot stay put.

Do you think I am sitting still because I am at peace?

I am more upset than I look right now.

Am I the one who told you to come along?

Who are you blaming here?

Why do you think Oh Wol got sick?

The cave and then a shitty cabin like this—

Did I tell you to come along?

You kept clinging to us when we told you to go back!

Clinging to you?

Do you think we wanted to?

Why did you come along, then?

Because I did not know you were ruffians who kidnap women!

Am I the only one who kidnapped someone?

Your father started it first!

Your father not only kidnapped my young master.

H-He also tried to kill him, too!

If we are ruffians, your father is a murderer!

Your hands are ice cold.

Baek Gu, can you hear me?

♫ In a long memory ♫

♫ I'm searching for you, blurry in the distance ♫

♫ Where is all the longing ♫

♫ deeply etched in my heart and lingering in the time past ♫

♫ where could it be? ♫

♫ I am wandering like a lost child ♫

♫ You are too far away ♫

♫ for me to get closer ♫

♫ So that I can touch you at the tip of the passing breeze ♫

♫ I’m going to walk towards you ♫

♫ wherever you are ♫

♫ Inside the memory of the past ♫

♫ The blurred moments come and hurt ♫

♫ Will I miss all the longing which remains deep in my heart ♫

♫ even the loneliness? ♫

It will also be hard for you.

Will you be all right?

♫ I am wandering like a lost child ♫

♫ You are too far away for me to get closer ♫

What pained you so much, Scholar sir?

Was it my father?

I want to be by your side.

Though I am feeble, let me remain as Baek Gu, the servant

and be of help to you.

I probably cannot be forgiven,

but just let me stay by your side.

♫ I want to be in the time we can't return to ♫

♫ Forget all the dark days ♫

♫ You are too far away ♫

♫ for me to get closer ♫

♫ So that I can touch you at the tip of the passing breeze ♫

♫ I will walk towards you ♫

♫ You are too far away ♫

♫ for me to get closer ♫

♫ You are the only one for me ♫

How are you feeling? Are you still cold?

No, I'm not. I feel a lot better.

I apologize.

It is fine now that you feel better.

Do you still intend to come with me?

- Pardon? - You almost died last night.

You could face danger again, so—

I will come with you.

If you agree,

I want to talk to your lady and take you out of servitude.

What do you think?

I am saying this because your talent is too good.

If you are no longer a servant, you can live freely, doing what you want.

Fortunately, I have enough wealth to make that happen.

So tell me if you are interested.

I am thankful for the offer,

but we need to get out of this place and find those two.

I don't think it is the time to think about my status.

Could I tell you about it later?

You are right.

Do you think you can move?

Yes.

Should we not look for the royal seal?

The crown prince's investiture cannot happen without the royal seal—

We need to delay the crown prince investiture as much as possible.

The Left State Councillor is capable of killing His Majesty

if Grand Prince Do Seong is proclaimed as the crown prince, in order to make him the king.

Do you believe what the deposed crown prince said?

Yes, that's why

I'm not looking for the royal seal.

If we are to safely escape the palace as we planned—

Your Highness, the Left State Councillor has arrived.

Let him enter.

Is that the royal seal?

Did the queen give it back?

Are you mocking Her Highness?

This is fake.

So what if it is fake?

If Her Highness the Queen Dowager says this is the royal seal, it will be so.

The royal seal is one thing.

What about the national seal? (Bestowed by the Chinese emperor)

If they find out the national seal is fake when the crown prince's investiture letter is sent,

how are you going to handle the emperor's wrath?

What do you suggest we do, then?

Shall we all die together?

I have bet my life on this matter.

It seems that the two of you did not.

If things go wrong, we will die as traitors anyway.

I am prepared to die after a sword fight with all my might.

Would you like to see me give it a try?

The Gwansanggam has stated (Joseon's agency that observed the weather and constellations.)

that the first day of next month will be an auspicious day.

On that day, the crown prince's investiture will take place.

This is a joyous event where Joseon's lineage will be continued.

You are to set up the Investiture Agency promptly (Temporary agency to oversee the investiture ceremony)

and thoroughly prepare to welcome the nation's heir.

Yes, Your Highness!

What is the matter?

Your Highness, this is Court Lady Jo!

Congratulations, Your Highness.

The crown prince investiture date has been set.

Are you sure?

Yes, the mayor of Hanyang went to escort the grand prince right now.

Your Highness, is something wrong?

Please die.

If I die as you order, Left State Councillor,

Father would be the next one.

Am I wrong?

Because as long as Father is alive,

Do Seong cannot become the king.

Sir Magistrate, the criminals are here.

I need to see them in private. Send them in!

Pardon?

Oh, yes!

Leave the criminals here and get out!

Pardon?

I told you to get out. What are you waiting for?

Gab Seok!

Are you injured at all?

I am fine.

How did you know we would get arrested?

Before that, how did you come in here?

I came in last night when no one was here.

Does that mean you were hiding here all night?

Yes.

I waited, suppressing my sleepiness,

and as soon as this...

magistrate came in,

I took him hostage.

You saved me again. Thank you.

There is another door this way.

Let's go, Young Master.

Well, what about my lady?

- That man is... - He is Choi Sang Rok's right-hand man.

Is he?

Yes.

I will just follow Scholar sir.

Please just leave!

Because of you—

I will make sure not to cause any problems.

Rather, I will be of help.

- What help? - I grew up with that orabeoni like siblings.

You can use me as a hostage if necessary.

The scholar's wound!

What if it gets infected again?

I should be by his side to treat it right away.

I am also good at fighting.

I learned martial arts from that orabeoni.

I can easily take on a few men.

Please let me follow you.

Do not follow me.

Come with me...

- Baek Gu. - Young Master.

Thank you, Hwang Gu.

Scholar sir.

So where did you hide it?

Oh, you are really amazing.

How did you know you would get arrested?

We cannot afford to lose this.

Hence, I prepared for the worst.

You prepare for the worst,

yet you are trying to take that girl with us?

She is the royal physician's servant.

- Even if she is only a servant— - Yes, a servant.

Regardless of her will, she was born as somebody's servant

and that somebody just had to be Choi Sang Rok.

That is not her crime, is it?

Gab Seok,

I am going to get my revenge for sure.

I am going to take everything Choi Sang Rok has

and crush him to the ground.

When my wrath consumes everyone who lives in that house,

I sincerely hope that girl will not be there.

When I wipe out Choi Sang Rok,

I don't want that girl to get swept away and die with him.

Do you like Baek Gu that much?

What have you heard? That's not what I mean—

Whether it is or isn't, let's take her with us.

That is all we need to do, right?

Just put this on your back.

Let's go.

Baek Gu is waiting for us.

Please get on the palanquin.

Why? Are you scared I will refuse to go?

You come with me.

- Me, too? - Yes.

You always said how envious you are of Gab Dol, right?

Get a rank while we are at it.

Aigoo, thank you so much, Grand Prince!

Would it be all right to do that?

Once you get on the throne, the entire country of Joseon will be yours.

A mere bodyguard position is not a big deal.

Please do as you wish.

In that case, forget the palanquin, since it is too stifling.

Let's ride the horses.

However, there are rules on how to welcome the crown prince in the palace.

You told me to do as I wish.

Were you just saying that?

Stand back!

This is Grand Prince Do Seong! Hear ye!

Stand back!

This is Grand Prince Do Seong! Hear ye!

Stand back!

This is Grand Prince Do Seong! Hear ye!

Stand back!

This is Grand Prince Do Seong!

Being the crown prince is not a bed of roses.

That's what I'm talking about.

But surprisingly, you have not said you would quit.

They say my suffering alone will grant peace to the people of Joseon.

How could I quit?

You little... ! I am your brother.

This is Grand Prince Do Seong! Hear ye!

Stand back!

This is Grand Prince Do Seong!

It seems that the plum tree will blossom early this year, Your Highness.

There is a time for everything.

I am worried it will wither lifelessly, for it bloomed in a rush.

Please don't be concerned.

I am sure it is doing its best to repay you for your efforts.

It seems to need sunlight.

Let it sit in the sun for a while.

Yes, Your Highness.

Is this the plum tree the queen dowager cherishes

as if it were Grand Prince Gwang Chang?

Yes.

Let me see it.

May I ask why?

I thought anything and everything you touch was destroyed, Queen Dowager.

But this one miraculously survived.

Please give it to me.

Her Highness especially cherishes it.

Is that so?

I thought you only knew of affairs between men and women.

But I guess you have affection for a tree, too.

You are speaking out of line!

Out of line?

Did you say I am out of line?

What are you doing right now?

She easily dared to frame the crown prince, the heir of our nation,

so I thought Court Lady Kim was too brazen and thick-skinned to bleed.

I guess I must have been mistaken.

Now that I am back in the palace, I will visit you often.

I will see you again.

- Are you all right? - Yes, Your Highness.

It is a small cut, so please do not worry.

He is intentionally doing this to make you angry.

Please do not let him affect your mind.

If it bothers you, I will speak to the Left State Councillor.

Did you want to see me?

You heard the governor of Mokcheon sent a messenger, right?

Yes.

Since the prince is headed south,

he must be going to his maternal grandfather in Mungyeong.

I believe we already sent a messenger to Mungyeong.

Come on!

Do you think I do not know?

I am telling you because just arresting him is not enough.

Y-You mean...

I will take care of the aftermath.

Aigoo, y-you will get hurt!

Aigoo, what is going on?

Go back to Mu Baek right now and tell him to go to Mungyeong.

Yes.

Is Myeong Yun...

all right?

Yes, Master.

Did that man try to harm her to get revenge?

No, those men think I am the lady.

What about you, then?

Nothing happened to you, either?

Yes, I am fine as well.

How was she...

in your opinion?

What do you mean?

Did Myeong Yun really run away from home to evade the crown princess selection?

Yes.

She said she would be back as soon as the marriage prohibition was over.

By chance, is the deposed—

Never mind.

Your teachers have arrived.

What brings you here?

Is there a reason you are not coming to your classes?

I fell asleep.

T-These darned books are the best for putting you to sleep.

How can you treat books that contain valuable words of saints like that?

Is our country in this sorry state because we were

so respectful towards those words from saints?

I am joking!

Since you seem to be curious about a peaceful world,

we will discuss peaceful times during tomorrow's class.

Whatever you say.

Also, you seem to find it inconvenient to come all the way to Yeonghwadang,

so we will come to the Crown Prince's palace tomorrow.

What is the matter?

Your Highness, this is Jung Yeong!

Move aside!

What is going on?

W-What is he—

What are you doing? Stop him right now!

W-What on earth—

Should we make everyone leave instead?

That sounds good.

Everyone, leave at once!

What are you all waiting for? Make everyone leave

and close the crown prince's palace gates! Hurry!

In the case that I end up coming back to the palace,

we will no longer be brothers. We will be enemies.

Still, I cannot leave you to die.

You must stay strong, Brother.

I am going to do my best to protect my family.

You stay strong, too.

You are so light!

Please punish Grand Prince Do Seong for violating the virtues of Confucianism!

Please punish him!

Please punish Grand Prince Do Seong for violating the virtues of Confucianism!

Please punish him!

These are all petitions asking that the Grand Prince Do Seong be punished.

Never, since the establishment of Joseon, has such a devastating event occurred

and there will never be one in the future.

Since His Majesty is still bedridden,

the grand prince must have been extremely frustrated.

Though it was not the right way,

you could understand it as the result of sincere filial piety.

The grand prince will soon become the crown prince.

He should be the role model for all nobles in this country.

But he is basically insulting all nobles who are studying Confucianism!

What the censor said is right.

He should refrain from superstition and shamanism that seduce people's minds.

However, he brought a shaman to the sacred palace.

Please calm down.

I will have the grand prince promise me not to do such a thing again.

I would like to let this incident slide.

However, Your Highness, the grand prince is even skipping his classes.

I heard the grand prince even harassed a palace lady at the queen dowager's palace.

Is that true?

Your Highness, I, Kim Dae Seung, implore you with my life on the line!

Please cancel the crown prince investiture for Grand Prince Do Seong!

Do not look at me with those eyes.

I will never be fooled again.

You dared to harm His Majesty by using his own wife, on top of that!

You framed and deposed the crown prince, who is so good-natured..

But I cannot do so because my guts churn every time I see your face.

If things go wrong, we will die as traitors anyway.

Shut your mouth!

The moment you had an affair with Choi Sang Rok,

you were only a lewd wench who is mad for men, not the Queen Dowager.

Do you think I cannot strike you?

- Kill me. - If we are to safely escape the palace as we planned...

Were all the moments you interacted with me thus far

entirely pretenses and lies?

You could never have done these things if you were human.

You were able to because you are a beast!

Is it that hard on you?

I do not know who I am anymore.

How did I end up like this?

How did I become such a vicious wench?

No, you did not change at all.

If you had changed, you would not be suffering like this.

I vividly remember.

You coming to Dosoram to find me.

You are... still the... same person you were back then.

I am sorry...

and I'm grateful to you.

It will be over soon.

So, please wait a bit longer.

Orabeoni.

I will pass the state exams for sure this time.

I will marry you and make sure...

to repay you for the debt I owe you for what you have done for me.

Although we have not officially married yet,

I've considered you my husband for a long time now.

I thought you felt the same as me.

But I must have been mistaken.

How could that be?

Don't you know I have considered you my woman

since the moment I started to have feelings for you?

Then, how could you say you will repay me, as if we were strangers?

I only did my duty as your wife.

I am going to go back now.

I must have said something wrong again.

That is not what I meant.

Did I make you upset?

Next time, I will be the one who'll come to find you.

Wearing an official hat with winter jasmine on my head,

with the Four Pillars Letter on my back, (Letter with his written fortune which serves as a marriage proposal)

I will knock on the gates of your house.

Four Pillars of fortune: year, month, day, and hour of birth were used to predict the future of the person

Orabeoni.

It is not too late to hurry the wedding.

I told you before.

Unless you want to lose Maiden Su Ryeon,

you should marry her right away.

I will marry her. Once I pass this state exam—

If you fail, are you not going to marry her?

I am going to pass for sure.

If you are going to pass anyway,

it does not matter if you marry her first.

The state exam is coming up soon.

Could something possibly happen in those few days?

Bad events come to you like thieves at night!

If you delay it further, you might lose Maiden Su Ryeon forever!

Our Young Master will have to pass the state exam.

Sounds lovely.

Though she is a new queen consort, she is still a queen.

I will have to go through the formalities and steps. Right?

Your Majesty, you looked fondly upon my lowly daughter and visited us in person.

I am so overwhelmed with gratitude that I cannot bear it.

But my daughter already has a man whom she promised to marry.

Oh, is that so?

What are you doing? Hurry up and greet His Majesty.

Yes.

Aigoo, the ground is cold.

I am satisfied with having seen your face today.

So, skip the protocol.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Look into that girl's betrothed.

Yes, Your Majesty.

Let us go!

My Lady.

Should you not inform Young Master, at least?

The state exam is right around the corner.

My Lady, still...

Even if Orabeoni finds out right now,

what can he possibly do?

It might only disturb him, and he could lose ten years of his efforts.

What are you going to do now?

For now, I will have to wait it out somehow...

until the state exams end.

All hail His Majesty!

Young Master!

Young Master!

What brings you here?

The royal decree told her to send her Four Pillars Letter by today.

But it is all over once her Four Pillars letter is sent.

What do we do?

Bad events come to you like thieves at night!

If you delay it further, you might lose Maiden Su Ryeon forever!

- Orabeoni. - Yes.

You have to go before anyone sees you.

You deserve to die for having dared

to mock me and steal what is mine!

You already know your crime!

This humble one has never stolen or sought after someone else's things.

This family's daughter is my beloved whom I have loved for a long time

as well as my betrothed, whom I have promised to marry.

How dare you!

- Twist the criminal's legs! - Yes!

My Lady!

Your Majesty!

Please spare him, Your Majesty!

Su Ryeon, do not do this. Go back!

Your Majesty, he has not done anything wrong.

It is all my doing.

Stop! I told you to stop!

Do I have to bite my tongue to make you go back?

His mouth is still uttering words.

What are you all doing?

Your Majesty!

This lowly one was foolish and committed a grave sin.

Please have compassion.

Just for once, please have mercy.

Please spare that man's life.

Spare his life?

If I spare his life,

what will you do for me in return?

Your Majesty!

The criminal is here.

Take them off.

Su Ryeon!

- Su Ryeon. - Stand back!

Su Ryeon.

Stand back!

Orabeoni!

- Get out of the way! - Su Ryeon.

Orabeoni!

Su Ryeon.

Orabeoni!

Su Ryeon.

Su Ryeon.

Orabeoni.

- Su Ryeon. - Orabeoni.

Su Ryeon. Su Ryeon!

Su Ryeon.

Su Ryeon.

Orabeoni.

Su Ryeon.

Su Ryeon.

Orabeoni.

When I met you again after a long time passed,

if you had changed, I would have given up on you.

It's because you are still the same as back then,

that I am staying by your side.

Orabeoni.

How could you do such a thing?

Aren't you interested in becoming the crown prince?

Is everything you told me the other day all lies?

Listen now, Mayor.

- Yes. - Why must I become the crown prince by getting filth all over my body?

Filth, you say?

What do you mean by that?

The royal seal is fake.

The national seal is also fake.

Even if we somehow make it work for now,

if anyone objects to my legitimacy

and the emperor ends up hearing about it,

how would I look?

You are bound to choke when you eat in a rush.

Anyway, after the deposed crown prince is eliminated,

who else can become the king besides me in this country?

Listen to me now.

I do not want the slightest speck of dust on my path to the throne.

I failed to understand your deeper thoughts

and ended up being hasty and foolish.

Mayor, please, stop having those useless worries

and go find the deposed crown prince as quickly as possible!

[Samudang]

This is an edict from the queen dowager.

[The fate of the sinner, Yi Geon...]

- Depart now! - Yes!

[Palace Gate]

Hear ye!

Hear ye!

Grandfather!

This is Geon.

Geon is here.

Grandfather.

Your Highness.

Your Highness?

Your Highness the Crown Prince!

How hard must it have been for you?

Missing Crown Prince Preview

I am Myeong Yun, the daughter of the royal physician who kidnapped you.

Do not ever mention your father to me.

His Majesty is in a critical state.

Choi Sang Rok is the only one who can cure him.

I decided to become the crown prince as they wish.

Please forgive me for leaving without saying goodbye.

Traitor Yi Geon, you are under arrest!

The deposed crown prince has been captured.
