The three of us were taken
to the mortuary.

We were told that we wouldn't be
able to touch Moira

as we would see her
through a glass screen.

There could be no hugs or kisses.

And everything was
heart-wrenchingly, horribly wrong.

Moira, so good, so loved,

so loving, lying there, cold,

alone in a police mortuary.

Dead.

I have to believe that
you still exist, somewhere.

That you still watch me, sometimes.

That you still love me, somehow.

I have to believe that life
has meaning, somehow.

That I am useful here, sometimes.

That I make small differences,
somewhere.

I have to believe that I need
to stay here for some time.

And that all this teaches me
something,

so that I can meet you
again somewhere.

TRAIN BRAKES SCREECH

It's ten years since my beloved
daughter Moira was abducted,

raped and murdered in Glasgow.

In many ways, it seems only
a few weeks ago.

I will never find the words to
describe our trauma, devastation

and despair, the horror of
how Moira died.

Shortly after,
to try to cope better,

I started to write
about my inner turmoil.

Much later, I thought that this
could also help other people.

These writings have never been
shared with anyone until now.

I have decided my writing
is going to be for Moira.

This is something that may help me,
something which will keep me

focused, by giving me a purpose and
it may help others to understand

the anguish associated with
the violent death of a loved one.

Maybe my pain will be eased
if, as I write

of my desolation and despair,

I also write of my lovely Moira.

We hope to die before our children.

That is the natural order of things.

That is how it's meant to be.

We worry about road accidents
and about their health

because we all know families
who have lost little and grown-up

children to the illnesses that seem
to plague the world today.

But Moira was deliberately beaten,
raped, beaten, killed.

She was alone with a terrifying
monster in the dark.

And none of us knew.

None of us will ever truly
know what she went through.

How can you be prepared
for something like this?

How do you cope?

How do you absorb the enormity
of it all?

The nightmare began for us
when a plainclothes policeman came

to our door at 10.00 on that morning
of May 30th.

I waited for him to say
why he'd called,

and during the ensuing pause,
wondered if I'd seen or heard

anything of significance locally.

Then he told me he had bad news
from Scotland.

The policeman explained to us
that a body had been found

in a park in Glasgow

and the police thought it was Moira,

although they couldn't be 100% sure.

SIRENS BLARE

Grant, my son, didn't pick
up the phone when I rang.

I sent a text asking him
to phone home at once.

I was, at the time, living
in a small West Australian

town called Capel.

I got a mobile text

from my mother just to say,

call me straight away.

I'd never received a text
like that from Mum.

My first thought went to,
it's my dad,

as it naturally would,
but it wasn't.

It was Moira.

Details weren't, weren't fully known
other than there was a body

found in the park.

I tried to tell him slowly.

First, I said that I had bad news.

Then, that it was the worst
possible news.

And then I just had to say it.

That Moira was dead

and we thought
she had been murdered.

The mind is just, you're just kind
of craving answers, something saying

to you, this isn't true.
It can't be true.

And I just basically walked out
of my job, my life, my house,

and what I was doing and
came straight back to Scotland,
back to Glasgow.

I won't ever forget Grant's shout
of despair.

The anguish I could hear
when I told him.

I remember screaming only
once before in my life

and that was in the labour ward
when Moira was born.

That scream was so loud
it frightened Hubert,

who was waiting anxiously
outside the ward.

He didn't see the expression
on my face when I screamed that long

scream of absolute joy.

She remained a joy for 40 years.

Always loving, always loved.

I do know that we are only
at the beginning of a very long road

and the road will have many
twists and turns.

We were all frozen in time,
painfully missing Moira,

still gripped
in the horror of her last hours.

Memory is a difficult thing.
Since losing Moira,

it's very hard and it makes me
perhaps a little bit angry

because I struggle with memories.

Because of the way Moira died...

..I can't remember
a lot of the good times.

My brain goes straight to the way
she was killed.

There's a lyric in an old song, I
think it was by Tears For Fears.

It was, "Memories fade but the
scars still linger," and it feels

very much like that with me.

So I can't remember a lot,
erm, which,

which is a great frustration to me.

Since coming back to Scotland,
I've a passion for hill walking

and that basically led onto my
photography, the Scottish

landscapes, the beauty,
the remoteness.

Just standing there, just taking
it in and the constantly changing

light in Scotland
and a different mood.

Perhaps the backdrop of losing
Moira in such, such awful

circumstances, I wanted
to completely throw myself

into something and immerse myself
in my photography and perhaps put

the blinkers on and spend time
in these places

where, yeah, the remoteness
and the solitude kind of,

kind of helps in a way.

There's no such thing as an escape,
perhaps a distraction.

Being out in the wilds and,
you know, walking up a mountain,

your mind's focused on just getting
to the next stage or just getting

through the day. It's the same
perhaps taking a picture sometimes,

you're so intent on trying to
capture that light

at the time that your mind
tends not to wander.

So you're, you're totally thinking
about perhaps the next ten minutes

or the next 20 minutes and your
head's not distracted by that.

Moira was a big sister.

She was a best mate.

I just remember nice things about

my sister and the things
that we did together

without thinking about her being
beaten to death over three hours

in a dark park in the middle
of the night and screaming and

people hearing the screams and not
doing anything about it.

I don't know how I bear
being without her,

not hearing from her.

Having no visits to look forward to.

I hurt.

But I go on.

We hurt, but we go on.

We get up, eat, wash and shop
for essentials.

We go to bed.

Sometimes we have an unbroken sleep

and then we get up and hurt
and go on.

My name is Colin Field.

I retired from the Police Service
of Scotland in 2014

where I was the head of
intelligence,

and prior to that I was the head
of CID operations
in Strathclyde Police.

It was quite clear from the outset
that this was going

to be a very complex investigation,
given the nature of the scene,

which was in one of Glasgow's
biggest public parks.

You know that the golden nuggets
are going to lie within the confines

of that park.
That's going to attract

hundreds and hundreds of resources
to protect that scene,

and that possibly was the most
important decision that was taken

at the early stages of the inquiry.

So, thereafter, the focus
would be on identifying the victim.

We were made ready for our
identification of Moira.

It was explained to us that
we would not see her in the flesh,

but that we would see her face
on a small

black and white television screen.

We were shown into a small room
where the screen was mounted quite

high on a wall, diagonally
opposite the doorway.

I can see it as I write about it.

And for a second, just one
second, I recognise Moira.

I think I gasped and blurted out...

"Oh, Moira."

Her hair was spread up behind her
head onto the table.

It had waves and curls because it
had been wet and tangled.

It wasn't straight and classy
like Moira wore it.

Hubert said he didn't think
it was Moira, but I knew.

In that very first instant,
I had known.

I had recognised the bone
structure around her eyebrows,

and forehead. I knew.

What had happened to our
lovely girl to change her?

What had been done to make her
look different?

It was Moira in the mortuary.

There was no doubt.

The starting point of any strategy,
whether that's house-to-house

inquiries or CCTV or searches
of an area, is fairly obviously

the last place and the last
time that Moira was seen.

And that was the starting point
for the investigation.

And our priorities thereafter
were capturing all available

forensic evidence that was
associated with Moira

and the various places that she had
been and had been confined in

within the park itself.

We were assured that every effort
would be made to find and

lock up Moira's killer.

I could think only of what
had happened to Moira.

There was no room in my head or
heart for any thoughts

of Moira's killer.

All those traditional lines
of inquiry were instigated,

for example, gathering of CCTV,
the potential interviewing

of witnesses, establishing Moira's
movements immediately prior

to her abduction, rape and murder.

What did he do to her?

Oh, God.

What did she have to go through?

Why did Moira have to suffer?

I cannot put words to the pictures.

I clench my teeth and my fists
and squirm in agony as I try to

stop them materialising
in my brain.

It happens over and over again.

How do you stop thoughts, sounds
and visions of that nature,

which are completely outwith
your control, from entering

your mind at a moment's notice?

Quite simply, I don't know
what the answer

to that is and I don't know
if anyone does.

There were messages for Moira
and for us.

And as I read them, I was conscious
of the love of these caring people

who were reaching out to us
in our despair.

The park was like a huge empty stage
and policemen were positioned

around the perimeter to keep
the audience out.

There were no people about.

The families, the dog walkers,
the joggers were all gone.

There was a sense of a
disembodiment,

of distance from everything,

of being very minor players in a
huge drama we didn't understand.

Fairly obviously, any family, but
in particular in this occasion,

Beatrice, have a thirst for
knowledge

that's quite simply overwhelming.

And Beatrice, being the type
of person that she is,

would want to run the investigation
herself, to be brutally honest.

So that was a real task
for the family liaison officers

to ensure they didn't compromise
their relationship with Beatrice

and Hu and Grant and I'm certain,
having spoken to Beatrice many, many

times about this, that she knew
and understood why the police

and the Crown had to do that,
but nevertheless,

it had a significant impact on her
ability to process...

..exactly what had happened
to Moira on that night.

I struggled with everything,
questioned everything, constantly

analysed every scrap of
information we gathered.

My brain was addled with it all.

I'm sure we could have been
trusted with more facts.

We wouldn't have jeopardised
any investigation or future

trial by blabbing.

Our family liaison officer
said to me on one of their visits,

"Bea, you don't have to solve this.
That's our job."

But my brain wouldn't let go.

My dad had been a detective and I
had always analysed everything

to get at the facts
and I couldn't stop.

I asked if the postmortem
was now completed and if so,

when we could see Moira properly.

I understand that not everyone
chooses to see a loved one

when they have died, but in our
family we always have.

I also knew that sometimes people
make a decision of this nature

in haste and then have regrets
later.

Anyway, I needed to see Moira again.

The three of us were taken
to the mortuary.

We were told that we wouldn't be
able to touch Moira

as we would see her through a glass
screen.

We knew it was Moira and I wanted

to stroke my girl's
face but couldn't.

And there was no warm smile, no
expressive gesture, no dancing eyes.

Moira wasn't there any more.

I know we tried to say goodbye,

but there could be no hugs or
kisses.

And everything was
heart-wrenchingly, horribly wrong.

Wrong.

Moira, so good, so loved,

so loving, lying there, cold,
alone in a police mortuary.

Dead.

If I had been in a position to fight
for my daughter's life, like all

mothers, I would have done that,
would instinctively have fought

to the death to protect Moira.

I couldn't do that,

but my hormonal reaction
to the trauma meant

that I was in a constant
state of readiness.

I do worry every day that there'll
be something somewhere that I know

that's going to trigger

this enormous pain within
Beatrice, if she is exposed to it.

Perhaps she'll read something or
she'll hear something in the news

or on the radio.

But there's only one person
can manage that,

and that's her.

Outside the hotel, George Square
was buzzing with life.

There was shouting and laughter.

Car horns and music.

It was surreal.

My heart was torn and sore.

A dear school friend of Moira's

had her 40th birthday approaching
and I wanted to send her a card.

I left my sister-in-law to do
her shopping and approached

the card counter.

From yards away,

one card appeared to jump
at me and I read,

"Life begins at 40."

It hadn't for Moira.

It had ended.

I thought I was going to fall down.

I swayed on the spot,

fighting back nausea and tears
for several seconds.

I couldn't choose a card.

We did ask about how long
Moira's body would stay

in the mortuary, as we would
have to arrange a funeral.

We were told to prepare
ourselves for a wait.

Moira's body could not be released
until an arrest had been made.

Moira had been violated in the worst
possible ways and then her body

subjected to a postmortem.

Now we were told
that there would be more of the same

at a much later date,

and this on behalf of whoever
was accused.

This did not seem right.

This was so gut-wrenching,
so very painful.

I wanted to say that now, surely,
they must leave her alone.

My career in law enforcement
started in 1980.

I was a detective with the Met
police for 30 years.

In the early days following Moira's
murder, one name

was being mentioned,

time and time again, and that
was of Cathy Owen.

Cathy at that time was a detective
inspector in the Metropolitan

Police Service and later went on
to lead the Homicide Service

in England and Wales.

With Bea and Hu,
their daughter Moira was,

was murdered in Scotland.

I met them and I said to them on

that occasion that the Homicide
Service was coming into being.

It hadn't started.

But that that should be able to
fulfil that need for bereaved

families in England and Wales.

Not so Scotland, because obviously
the Ministry of Justice is for the

funding in England and Wales.

There was no-one getting a grip
in Scotland as they had done

in England and Wales and Bea and Hu
definitely felt the same.

Cathy Owen,

she has been a great influence
on Beatrice and was fundamental

in shaping our thinking
around the Homicide Service

here in Scotland.
And in England and Wales,

there has been a Homicide
Service for many, many years,

where homicide caseworkers
are allocated to families, not

as investigators and not as family
liaison officers,

but as support workers,

to help those families
through the most difficult

and unimaginable trauma.

And so it was fairly obvious that
there was

a glaring gap in service
provision in Scotland.

We were all delighted
that the service was officially

launched in June of 2019.

For a long time, we've worked
both sides of the border.

But there has been a Homicide
Service in England and Wales

for a long time, and we were around
when that service was set up,

so we've worked with it from the
beginning.

And so, been aware all the time of
the differences in the help each

side of the border and the joined-up
nature of it in the south

and the much, much less joined up
nature and the gaps and the help

that wasn't being given to
people in Scotland.

I'm very, very pleased,
they are going to have the help

that they need so much.

That's what we've been about all
along,

and a lot of good people put a lot
into it, working to bring it about.

One person can make a massive
difference, and the fact

that Bea has chosen to focus her
energies to make things better

for anybody who's so unfortunate
to be in this position in the future

is a testament to her spirit.

It is a testament to her
strength as an individual

and the family's wider strength
as well, so I really applaud it.

Somebody might have had the
conversation with you

about something, but you're not in a
position to be able to take it in.

I was hyper, I took in
what the police said.

I was asking about if they'd been
there, and been that,

and were they doing that, to the
extent that somebody said,

"Bea, we...
it's our job to solve this."

But, at the same time,
Hu was so stunned.

Bea is an incredible woman
to have done that and done

that tenaciously, doggedly,
over the last 11 years plus.

Today is a real testament to her.

So I really take my hat off to Bea.

The families and loved ones of those
who are murdered in Scotland

will finally have the right support

from the right people and made
available to them at the right time,

as is the case now in England.

I don't know how we got
through the months that followed,

the months of waiting
for the criminal justice system

to follow its due course.

We were in hell on Earth.

Hurting, bewildered and still
knowing very little about

what had happened to our
darling girl.

The death certificate had simply
said head and neck injuries.

And that told us nothing.

We did know that Moira's murder
was a brutal one, but had no detail.

And it rained every day for weeks.

I felt the whole world was weeping
and that it should be weeping.

And yet I kept most of my tears
on hold.

The silence when we entered the room
packed with people was profound.

I didn't intend to read
my statement.

I wanted to deliver it
from the heart.

I knew what I wanted to say
and I had to do it my way.

Think deep and hard.

If you know anything,

if you saw anything,
heard anything...

..if you are in the least bit
suspicious, the least bit

suspicious of anyone,

please tell the police.

You must tell the police.

Don't wait until the heart is ripped
out of another family.

We rose to the same profound
silence that had met us.

The silence seemed
more than respectful -

there was almost a sense
of awe about it.

My pent-up emotions could not
be contained any longer,

and at that stage, I know some
strangulated sobs escape me.

It was done.

Grant and Hu commented
on the amount of flashes

from all the cameras.

They said the flashing was awful
and nonstop.

I was amazed.

I hadn't noticed one flash.

The investigation into Moira's
murder attracted unprecedented media

attention throughout the United
Kingdom and fairly obviously,

that placed a significant amount
of pressure on Beatrice

and Hu and on Grant.

And Beatrice found comfort
and safety, in returning

to Carnoustie in Scotland,

where they have very strong family
and personal connections,

and where they sought refuge
from the media.

We had varying amounts and types
of sleep and none of them were good.

I cried myself to sleep and then
when I did wake I would get up

because I didn't want
my sobs to waken Hu.

And so I found myself walking up
and down and round and round

the garden, watching the dawn sky.

It was nearly midsummer
and was light about 4am.

I walked down to the deserted beach.

I spoke aloud
to Moira at these times.

I told her where we were and

that she was not to worry about us.

That Grant had come to look after us

and we would take care
of each other.

Especially, I told her
how loved and precious

she always was and always would be.

I reminded her about my lack of
faith and said how much I hoped

I was wrong because I so needed
her to hear me.

I so needed her not to feel
alone any more, so wanted

her to feel peace.

I want to shout her name
aloud. Moira. Moira.

I want to scream Moira so
loudly that it reverberates around

the world and penetrates
to every part of the universe

so that somehow, somewhere
she can hear me.

And maybe she can sense some
sort of sign that she knows

that she doesn't hurt any more,
that she's at peace,

that we'll be together again
one day.

I was desperate then,

and I'm desperate now
to have some belief.

To know that this is not the end.

That sometime in the future
there will be a spiritual coming

together for us with Moira.

I want to believe this more than
anything in the world, but faith

does not come with wanting.

I remain bereft and full of doubt.

I have asked friends who are devout
in their faith

to pray for Moira and for us.

Because I cannot do it.

I want to, but I cannot do it.

PIPER PLAYS

The service was very moving.

Neil Galbraith announced that the
service was for those of all

different faiths and for those
who had no faith at all.

I was helped by this, but Neil
had said that a terrible evil came

to this dear green place and,
although I gave it no conscious

thought at the time,

I found that when it was necessary

to speak of who had done
this terrible deed,

I referred to the vehicle of evil.

There was a picture in the papers
which gave me much discomfort.

It had been taken from a CCTV camera
positioned on the side of a bus

which travelled along Queen's Drive.

It was very grainy and it was

difficult to make out
the couple featured.

It gave me a very bad feeling.

In terms of gathering of CCTV,

clearly the priority is to gather
as much as you possibly can, both

from public space and also
private CCTV cameras.

And that would also include dashcams
installed on public service

vehicles that would be travelling in
the area in and around that time.

One of the most basic investigative

tactics are house-to-house
inquiries.

Detectives who were working
on Moira's murder were involved in

visiting those houses in the
immediate location near the park.

And it was in visiting one of those
houses, which was a series

of bedsits, where they spoke
to a young lady and that young

lady made us aware that,

at the time of Moira's murder,
she had a visitor,

and that visitor had arrived in the
United Kingdom from Slovakia.

That person had only been in the
Glasgow area for a very short

period of time and had left the area

almost immediately after Moira's
body was found in the park.

So therefore it was important
to gather items from that flat

which would yield, potentially,
the DNA of the person

who had been visiting Glasgow
at that time.

That was done, and within a very
short space of time,

we received the momentous news
that we did indeed have a DNA hit

for that particular individual.

I was told that Strathclyde Police
had submitted a criminal report

to the Procurator Fiscal in Glasgow
who would grant a petition warrant

for a 32-year-old man.

They thought that there would be
an announcement

about this on the midday news
on the radio.

I think I asked when they would go

and get him and I was told
that he was abroad.

An identification of the person
responsible was made.

And we also established that he
had left the United Kingdom

a short time after the murder had
occurred.

And we believed that he was back,
and was in his home country

in Slovakia at that time.

I couldn't think
about what this would mean,

but it didn't sound good.

Was he a Glaswegian who had fled
the country or was he from abroad?

Where is he?

There was a pause,
and then I was told

he was in Eastern Europe.

We made contact with some police
associates in Slovakia

and very quickly alerted them

to the potential that this
individual was back in Slovakia,

and we believed he was responsible

for Moira's abduction,
rape and murder.

At the same time, however, all of
the judicial and legal processes

were being instigated to ensure
that a European Arrest Warrant

could be issued and that this
individual could be brought back

to the United Kingdom in order
to stand trial.

The importance of that information
and all it would mean for forensics

was not lost on me, and I was aware
that all of the police team

had worked day and night and
weekends, that they'd strived way

beyond the call of duty
in all their efforts

to find Moira's killer.

I wanted him caught because I
didn't want anyone else to go

through what Moira had gone through.

But this didn't change anything
at all for us.

Moira's death, the horrendous nature
of her death,

her absence from our lives remained.

We have more to learn in a few
weeks' time,

when the accused is indicted,

and then we have a lengthy trial to
endure.

And I'm so scared.

How will we bear it?

We're going through the agony
of not knowing,

while we await the agony of knowing.

THUNDER CRACKS

On the day, the skies wept too.

As the cortege made its slow,
short way to the church,

the village was deserted except for
the police, who had kept

the narrow roads traffic-free,
and the staff from the village inn

who stood outside with bowed
heads as we passed.

The church was totally packed

and many were standing
outside in the rain.

The service went
as we'd planned it.

The rain was torrential,

as a piper led the procession
from the church to the graveyard.

And that was appropriate.

Moira was carried down the long path
and across the churchyard

by her dad and brother
and by her uncles.

I was there in body, but although
I had been so worried about breaking

down, about jumping or falling
into the grave with her,

that didn't happen.

I lost it.

I lost it.

My head took me away so that when
I was lowering the cord,

it was not because I was burying...

Beatrice announced that she was
launching the Moira Fund,

a small charity run from the back
room of her house

in a small village,
but designed to help those

families of victims
who have been lost

through murder or homicide.

It receives no money from any formal
sources of funding, and every penny

that's spent on a family has been
raised by people who have no

connection to the case,

no connection to the family,

but go out of their way to ensure
that those families, who sadly

are suffering loss today and
will suffer loss in the future,

can be better supported.

Nice to see you, everybody.

Nice to see you again.

Hello, Hu, how are you doing?
Nice to see you. Come and join us.

I've done some amazing work within
the Violence Reduction Unit

in Scotland to prevent violence
and to rehabilitate those

individuals
in pretty difficult circumstances.

And together we decided that we
would launch an event, an annual

event, which was essentially to
celebrate Moira's life.

And so we put in place Moira's Run.

CHEERING

This is one of the most
beautiful and largest parks

in Glasgow City Centre.

I felt it was important a strong
statement should be put out there to

ensure that the park was reclaimed
for the purpose

for which it was intended.

WHOOPING AND CHEERING

Significantly, however, I decided
that the run should take place

in the very location where Moira
lived and from where she was

abducted, raped and murdered.

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

Well done!

In Glasgow, in the west
of Scotland on a Sunday morning,

people should be lying in their bed,
nursing a hangover, not pulling on

a pair of shorts and a set of
trainers and running round a park

for some people that
they've never met.

I live down south now, but
I love coming back to Glasgow

because I'm a Glaswegian

and you get really earthed

and it's this genuine,
open affection.

That's what makes it so special,
it's the people of Glasgow.

I just think it's a
really joyous day,

in a place that, for many
people for a long time,

became a real place of darkness

and desolation, and awfulness,
if you like.

To do this reclaims it.

Our whole role
is to try and address violence

and the consequences of violence
and what a great way to publicise

the impact that violence can have.

And as you see today, with the
turnout of people from the city

of Glasgow coming out and taking
part and wanting to support Moira's

family and wanting to raise money
for this fund,

it's not that peculiar. It's a
very good and generous thing to do.

You can't believe that that level
of violence towards a woman

could happen in such
a beautiful place.

And so I remember being deeply
affected by it.

We need to show that kind
of solidarity

amongst us, and put out there
that we're no scared to be

in our local area, and we'll be no
put off and we'll no be intimidated.

It's empowering for women.

Moira was into Keep Fit.

She was always speaking to people,
a big, bubbly personality.

She would have loved and really
enjoyed a day like today.

This is amazing. Year after year,

the people of Glasgow have turned
out for this.

And the symbolism of it is huge
because, of course,

this is where Moira died.

But this is bringing a gathering
of love back to this park.

And it means so much for Moira's mum
and dad, for Bea and Hu.

I think for the family to come back
here year after year,

to what effectively is the scene of
the crime, but to have such

a positive uplifting event...

The nature of Glasgow as a city,
it's full of really good people.

And I think that this is
a manifestation of that.

The dignified way they've
carried themselves

since the crime, and to turn such
a tragic event

into something so positive by
setting up the Moira Fund,

I think, you know, Bea, Hu
and Grant

are a real inspiration to all of us.

And people are smiling and laughing,

and everybody walks away feeling
they did a good thing.

And that's not an easy thing

in the world we live in just now.

Everyone wants to be touched by
this woman,

and I see the beaming smiles

and I also see the tears
rolling down people's faces.

People feel compelled to do
something.

For society,
that is really, really positive.

We're a very small team.

There's only 20, 25 of us.

And we punch way above our weight,
and the way we do that is to get

involved in causes like this
and throw our weight

and our strength behind it, and try
and raise awareness

of the issues of violence

and the impact it can have on
families, and out of a tragedy,

like this, that good could come
from it.

Just to get up in the morning

and think, "Maybe we'll be able
to help somebody today."

And a perfect legacy...

..for my darling daughter

and my terrific son.

The agency is involved in reducing
violence, but we hadn't taken much

to do with victims.

And this gave a great opportunity
for the Violence Reduction Unit

to recognise that victims are every
bit as important in our work

as anybody else.

You have some of the people that
have started off

as kind of baddies...

That's right. Right from the start.
..and now they're different

and they're reformed,
or are reforming,

and I think it's absolutely
wonderful...

She's a ball of energy, isn't she?

And the fact that we've now got some
headway, some movement, some

developments, I think is greatly
attributed to the work

that she has done.

All of us involved have been struck
over the years by the lengths

that some people go to
to raise money.

It has been really quite remarkable.

LAUGHTER

And there's just no chance

of this malfunctioning?

Absolutely none. Good.

Because there's no way I'll be
leaving it after.

We invite playwrights to submit
short plays that are about ten

to 15 minutes long,

and what we do is we invite
directors and actors

to perform them.

I don't suppose you want to whack
a siren onto my mobility scooter?

So it gives creatives
the opportunity to showcase

their work, but also to be able
to raise money for charity.

There will be no need for that,
Miss Luton.

I'm very confident... Mrs.

Back in 2017, a friend of mine,
Cathy, was murdered in Muswell Hill.

And I wanted to dedicate our show
to her as well as others

who have been taken away too soon
from this life.

Because what I wanted you to know
is that I still really like you.

I actually did a search on Google
for charities who do support

families and friends, and I came
across the Moira Fund

and I was so impressed by the work
that they have been doing

and have been carrying out
for all these years,

and I wanted to reach out to them
and say, "Please, let's help you."

Do you think there's, like, another
place, like a different stage

perhaps, and our play carries on?
Or maybe the clocks start again,

but we can't remember this play
and really we're stuck in

a constant cycle of ten-minute plays
that we can't remember? No.

Bea and I have only actually been
in touch via e-mail.

She seems like such a lovely person
and I just seem to know her already.

Tonight at our show is going
to be the first time

I'll be meeting her.

and Hu Jones, along with deputy
chair of the charity, Colin.

It's been such a treat.

It's usual for us to be quite
involved in all of our fundraisers.

Tonight, we haven't had to
do anything.

We've come, we've relaxed

and we have really, really
enjoyed it.

On average, a murder costs
a family £37,000.

And that's without any wages -
loss of earnings - included.

We have no official funding
whatsoever.

We're all unpaid.

And to date, we have helped over
1,000 families nationwide.

So thank you again for

..and for helping us to help
others in Moira's name.

My name's Tracey Ford and I'm
the founder and CEO

of JAGS Foundation.

JAGS Foundation is an acronym

of my late son's names.

I lost him 12 years ago
to youth-on-youth violence.

Back then, when we were dealing
with the traumatic loss

of our children in very horrific
circumstances, I met Bea

through the Peer Support Network.

I also became aware of her
foundation, which supported us

in the very early days of JAGS
setting up as an organisation.

We've been running programmes
to help young people

or enable young people to recognise
the ripple effect on the long-term

devastation that violence is
causing, not just to their family,

but to people they went to school
with, people they don't even know.

How do you measure that?

How do you
measure a child's feeling?

How do you measure my feeling?

How do you measure another mother
and father's feeling of burying

their child?

My name is Anne Marie Cocozza.

I'm the co-founder of a charity
called FFAMS. FFAMS stands for

Families and Friends Affected
by Murder and Suicide.

My nephew was murdered 15 years ago
by four complete strangers.

I'm an adult survivor of childhood
sex abuse,

so I have suffered with suicidal
thoughts and feelings

since, well, childhood, really.
The first time I tried to take

my own life, I was only nine.

Hello, how lovely!

Anne Marie? Hello! Yes!

How lovely and nice to meet you.

And you. And I've got...

Bea Jones has managed to do
something beyond remarkable.

What she has brought about in terms
of financial assistance

to charities like myself,

I have absolutely nothing but
admiration for her.

The request was for a day out
for a wee boy.

Not many treats in store for him.

Dad killed Mum. Oh.

So, he's now with Auntie,
and Auntie is bringing him up.

Him going there and having that kind
of day out with an auntie and uncle,

that emphasises that he's part
of the family.

Equally as important is what she
has helped to mould

for in the future - that
organisations like myself

will be able to get some of
the Victims' Fund

from the Government and be able
to reach many more families.

I just feel there's been a real
spike in murders just now,

in the west of Scotland and we're
seeing people,

and we're seeing new families
every week.

I am reassured every single day she
has the ability to manage this,

irrespective of the trauma
that she was exposed to.

It's 28 years since my son
was murdered.

And I feel as much pain today
as I did 28 years ago.

For me, it's a long time to live
with that pain.

My name is Marie Ellis and I'm
the chair of SAMM -

and Manslaughter.

I think Bea is just adorable.

She actually helped SAMM

when we couldn't afford a retreat,
when we were really down on funds

and they provided a retreat.

She's worked so hard for that.

Is there anybody here looking to

We would be very, very grateful.

I might do it myself.

She shouldn't have to still be
struggling to get money

to help people.

Things like that should already
be in place.

Apart from helping people, which we
keep promoting,

we've also been pushing for Scottish
Government support.

If we can help somebody to walk
through those darkest days,

to encourage them and to listen
to them,

perhaps some day they can heal
enough to start building a different

life for themselves.

On the 21st of January, Barack Obama
was inaugurated as 44th

President of the United States.

I followed the ceremony on
television and cried each time

I heard him speak.

I, Barack Hussein Obama,
do solemnly swear...

That I will faithfully execute.

..that I will faithfully execute...
The office of President

of the United States.

Moira should not have missed
that momentous, wonderful day.

The world and all its events
were of great import to her.

Obama emphasised how so many of
the world's wrongs could be put

right by honesty and tolerance,

giving of your best and treating
all as equals.

All of these described Moira.

She had made her world a better
place for all who shared

it with her.

I ached for her. Longed to hear her
take on it all.

All her positivity.

I desperately miss my girl.

SIREN BLARES

Americans have been gunned
down in schools,

houses of worship, shopping malls,

music festivals, nightclubs,

movie theatres and in their
own homes.

We have often spoken about the need
for peer support for families

and individuals who are bereaved
through murder and homicide,

and we learned of an organisation
in the United States,

Parents Of Murdered Children,
who do just precisely that,

not only at a local level, but
at a national level, too.

And we were very, very interested in
what type of services they deliver

and the success that they have
enjoyed over a number of years.

Beatrice did have the opportunity to
view the testimony of family

members who had lost a child or
a sibling or a young relative

as a consequence of a murder
in the United States.

We are the only national
organisation in the United States

that offers emotional
self-help support.

There are literally untold
thousands of members of

Parents Of Murdered Children.

We are a support group for
homicide survivors

and we are homicide survivors

who are running Parents Of
Murdered Children.

I'm here because my three children,
Kate, Michael and Julia,

were murdered

by their father, who then
committed suicide.

You can talk to many therapists
and they still, like most people,

say, "I don't know what to say."

POMC, if I hadn't found them,
I still would have felt alone.

I needed more than grief support.

This organisation has helped me
tremendously.

SIRENS BLARE

Because of what happened to my son,
I am now a member in their club,

a club nobody wants to belong
to, a club that comes

with a very high price.

We found a TV and we turned on
the local news

and started getting the visuals

of the SWAT team, police
and helicopters.

And immediately I left work,
called my husband and we left

for Columbine High School
to find our son Matthew.

And we were told that buses
were there that were pulled up.

And I remember I was having
to stretch and look,

and I'd watch each child get off
the bus, waiting for my son.

And he never got off.
Bus after bus after bus.

My daughter was murdered by

a Los Angeles gang member who wanted

to move up in the hierarchy

of the organisation.

One of the ways that they moved up

in the organisation was to attack

a member of a police
officer's family.

SIRENS BLARE

If you look at the data connected
to homicide victims, you find that

they have high suicide rates,
they have high rates

of degenerating health.

And this organisation is one
that helps them get

through that process.

It's not a cure-all.

I'm here in memory of my son Brian,

who was robbed and shot to death.

But within POMC, not only

did you have unconditional support

and understanding,

but then there was
the education component,

you know, teaching you about
the judicial process

and what you were going to
go through,

or the investigative process

or, you know, what to do if your
case is unsolved

and nobody is arrested.

The comfort that I felt was...
I was not walking this journey

alone and by myself.

Now, I can speak to someone
that can not just sympathise

and empathise to my story,
but can understand it. Mm-hmm.

Emotionally understand it.

You know, the trial was going to
bring closure,

and that didn't bring closure.

Time is going to bring closure,
and that didn't bring closure.

So, no, I don't think... I don't
think it does.

I think it's like a wound
and it will scab over,

it'll start to heal, but there will
always be that scar.

It's generational.

What affected my daughter when she
was 14, when her brother

was killed, affects her sons.

The word "closure" was something
that was invented by people

in the media, and it has no
meaning whatsoever.

The only thing that closes is
the lid on the coffin.

When you're with other people in
a setting like that,

it's a reminder that you
can survive this.

Obviously, the States are huge,

so they've got all these different
chapters, whereas obviously...

Yeah. Yeah.

Well, we hope to do that.

Peer support services are not

services that are available

in any part of London that
I know of.

So, peer to peer support for me

is vital in families

being able to have somewhere

to go and someone to speak to

that has that experience
and has that knowledge

and has that understanding of what
it is living with the loss

of your child.

And that is the very nature

of peer support -

it's shared experience, it's not

having someone to advise you on what
benefits are in relation

to a funeral.

This is a club many people say
they don't want to be part of,

but they are.

That's the interesting thing
about peer support.

It is an essential part of it.

We were given information about
the hearing and the trial,

and I had misunderstood the nature
of a preliminary hearing.

I had thought that it was held
in a closed court

with the prosecution and defence
meeting with the judge to discuss

the readiness of each side
to go to trial.

Now, I realised that it would be
in an open court,

and that there, the accused would
respond to the indictment

with his plea of guilty
or not guilty.

The prosecutor thought it unlikely
that he would plead guilty.

When we learned that we
could attend,

the decision was quickly made.

We knew we had to go.

We knew, of course, it would be
traumatic for us to see

the perpetrator, but we had to go
and see what Moira had to see

on that awful night...

..to try to understand the hell
that Moira endured.

Perhaps if we went to that hearing,
it would prepare us in some way

for the trial.

We were told that we would
experience some kind of reaction

when we saw him.

And that our reactions would not
all be the same,

would be of different intensities,
but there would be a reaction.

The accused was brought in.

As he was brought up the stairs,
into the dock,

we had a side view of him.

He was flanked by two warders.

An interpreter joined them
in the box.

The indictment was not read aloud.

The defence counsel offered
a not guilty plea on behalf

of the accused.

The judge set a trial date
for March the 12th, 2009.

When the accused was taken from
the dock,

he cast his eyes around the room
and quite deliberately smirked at us

as he swaggered out.

One of the main things is people
who are bereaved together are not

necessarily the best supporters for
each other because they are doing

their own grieving in their own way.

Children grieve differently.

Males grieve differently to females.

And it depends on your relationship
with the person who has died.

Although I have felt and said that
I wish we could more readily

share our emotions, relate to each
other's pain...

..it's me who cannot even
meet Hu halfway.

I've tried to work out why.
Am I scared of

what Grant or Hu might say?

Scared that if they expose
their rawest emotions,

they will express hatred and violent
thoughts that will appal

or frighten me? I don't know.

Deep down there's not a minute
that she's not worried

about Grant and Hu
and how they're coping.

And that pretty much tells
you everything

you need to know about
Beatrice Jones.

But they have responded in different
ways, and Grant has very much

immersed himself in a new life
here in the United Kingdom,

and in his photography.

I spend a lot of time
taking photographs.

I don't regret leaving Australia.

That's part of my life that I left
behind and I wanted to support Mum

and Dad, but of course I'd met my
amazing wife who's the love

of my life. We now have
a lovely life

living in the north of Scotland.

He does talk about Moira.

Sadly, a lot of his happy
memories is gone.

I think that's to do with, you know,

Moira's murder and the trauma

that he's gone through.

My current life's good. I don't
sleep that much,

but my current life,
I can't complain.

I'm quite lucky in that respect.

I make time-lapse and we run a wee
Airbnb in the summer,

which keeps us busy,

and we're often off camping
and wandering

about in the Highlands.

I would listen to Bea

and I would just cry with her
and hug her.

And it was so painful.

I couldn't understand her pain,
but I could feel the horrific pain.

Sharon's brought us together
and showed absolute emotional

intelligence, because to come
into a family

that we've gone through
is not easy.

In some aspects, her death,
you know, overshadows

her life and the joy.

But things have changed
over the years

because I can see that...

..they will never be the same
people.

But he's still managed to bring joy

in situations and happiness.

And when speaking about Moira,
I can see that in their eyes.

They have this huge love, but this
hurt that will never, ever go away.

Being around my mum and dad can
mean some very difficult times,

and Sharon's just a tower of
strength that has really made such

an amazing difference.

People have no idea the huge efforts
and the 24-hour work that goes

into what they've created,
and the help

that they give families.

What keeps me going is helping our
son, our daughter-in-law

and my wife.

We're here for such a finite
amount of time.

We owe it to ourselves...

..to try and think more about
our existence.

My thoughts are for Beatrice
and Hubert.

That I'd like them to have
some happiness.

Sharon's been a great saviour

for them. She's a very spiritual

young lady. I think although

they know that Grant is
still suffering,

I think Sharon being in his life
has made a difference

to Beatrice and Hubert.

We have no conversations
with Beatrice about Moira.

The only conversations we have are
to do with the Moira Fund.

Beatrice finds it impossible to
remember happy things.

Oh, it's been ages!

LAUGHTER AND CHATTERING

It was becoming clear to us, clear
to me, that Moira's killer

had not entered the UK as a result
of any mistake made by an official.

There was no way anyone could have
gained any information

on him through a passport, stamped
or otherwise, because he didn't need

a passport to come to Britain.

He came in with only a work permit,
and even that wasn't necessary.

We had been supportive of
an open border policy, believed

that this was good for our country
economically and that it was

providing opportunities to the many
who came in to find work.

We had been proud of Moira
when she spoke out

to those who were criticising
European nationals for simply

being in their locality.

She defended their right
to be there.

Their right to try
and better themselves,

and to help their families.

We didn't know that there were no
checks in place whatsoever.

A country's first priority
should be to the safety

of its own citizens.

And so how on Earth had this
come about?

Beatrice presented me with a folder
about four inches thick,

crammed full of
letters and papers and replies

and newspaper articles...

..invariably letters that she'd been
writing to home secretaries, MPs,

MSPs, MEPs and other people who had
an interest in something

that she feels
very passionately about,

which I was largely unaware of.

And that was individuals coming
to the country

with serious violent backgrounds.

Beatrice has always been sensitive,
warm and welcoming towards asylum

seekers and indeed anyone from
abroad who's seeking a better life

here in the UK.

Her campaign is focused solely
on the tiniest minority

of violent offenders.

I was surprised by this when I was
presented with the folder,

not only by the amount of work
that Beatrice had been doing

in the background, but the fact that
it had been going on

for the best part of ten years.

And she had very astutely put in
place an air gap between the work

of the charity and this other
parallel issue that she feels

very strongly about...

..in terms of those
who are responsible

for serious violent offending
in the United Kingdom,

having travelled from other
parts of the world.

Moira's death got me to this
in the first place.

I needed to know that they were
still working towards keeping

down violence and crime, especially
the kind that Moira encountered.

I still needed to feel that I was
doing my best and that others

were doing their best, so that
those kind of crimes don't happen.

I've been feeling that things
were stuck in a groove.

But I don't believe they are.

They've explained in detail
how certain systems work

and they've taken on board that
nothing will ever be perfect,

but I do feel reassured.

This is someone who has spent her
entire life helping other people.

She can listen and she can chat
and she can engage, and that's

from prime ministers and home
secretaries to somebody lying

homeless in the street.

That is in her DNA.

It's three months since I've made
any progress with this - my writing.

I can only continue with it
according to my state of mind,

and can't plan ahead as I can never
predict what my state of mind

is likely to be.

The path is tortuous, but only
by trying to unravel it a little bit

at a time, can I hope to make
more sense of all the traumas

and my reactions to them, and allow
them to filter gradually

into my brain.

My brain has been totally
overwhelmed by a tsunami

of information and experience,
the like of which,

it has never encountered before.

And although it does the best
it can, there is now a log jam

which prevents the processing
of information.

And there are shut-downs,
gridlocks, panics, pain, illness.

As I start to untangle all
the barbs,

so that the little pieces of
information can be processed

into my long term memory,

then I am faced
with the reality again.

I remember everything in my head,
in my heart, and often my body

remembers too, and it produces
all over again the many different

physical symptoms of trauma.

So, as I approach the trial again
in my writing, I am scared,

and I've been putting it off,
waiting for strength.

I was asked if we had given any
thought as to how we would get

to court every day.

I could guess at the kind of money
that had already been spent

and was still being spent
on ensuring that the accused

had a top defence and every possible
human right,

including a specially built booth at
the back of the courtroom,

which would house three interpreters
and all the technology necessary

for simultaneous translation.

And I had just been told to consider
where the money was coming

from for our needs.

The reality that we found
is at the end of the trial,

people were on their knees
and it took them straight back

because there was no, in their mind,
real justice because they can't

bring someone back, even though
someone would go to prison

for 20 years.

But it doesn't change anything.

They might have to go through some
therapy again in order to counteract

what has gone on and how they've
been affected by the trial.

The accused had been reluctant
to wear the headphones provided

for him, headphones linked to
the interpreter's booth,

which had been specially erected
for the trial at great cost,

and which would give him
a simultaneous translation

of all that was being said.

He was spoken to by a solicitor
and an interpreter.

An adjournment was proposed by
the judge to resolve the problem.

The judge left, the jury left
and the public left.

We really didn't know what to do.

We were very on edge.

It was going nowhere,

and we sat there helpless
and frustrated.

The hardest thing for me maybe
in the trial was...

..him.

Seeing him come out
and smiling every day

at my parents and the court.

Um, I don't like to talk about him
very much, but he disrupted

the trial.

For days his behaviour meant
the jury were in and out,

witnesses were kept waiting,

witness arrangements
had to be changed,

more research had to be done,

and our ordeal was extended.

Then there were the witnesses who
had heard Moira screaming.

This was almost unbearable
to listen to.

A woman who was safely inside her
flat heard a loud scream

which was cut off.

She said she was very
disturbed by it.

I wanted to shout out, to shake her.

If she had been so disturbed,
why didn't she phone the police?

Two couples heard Moira scream
as they walked by the park,

one of the men said he checked
the time on his phone.

It was 11:32 pm, and he said to his
partner that if they woke

up in the morning and heard there
had been a murder in the park,

then they had just heard it.

His phone was in his hand.

This was hard to take and I will
never understand it.

The next witness had been walking
his dog in the park on the night

of Moira's death.

He had heard noises, a scream of
"Stop it", and he was concerned.

He thought that it sounded
more like someone in trouble

than someone larking about.

He saw a man sitting on the wet
grass, just staring into the bush.

The man did not acknowledge him
in any way, and the witness felt

that there was someone else there.

However, he made light of his fears

and said it would just be some
kids shagging.

DISTANT SIREN BLARES

Many people are badly affected
by the sounds of sirens

because they so obviously bring
emergency situations to mind,

are reminders of bad things past.

With me, it is because there were no
sirens when Moira was struggling

and dying. Although she screamed
and was heard,

those who heard her did nothing.

I heard every word
the coroner spoke.

I kept it all in my head,

and that night I wrote down
everything I could remember.

Moira endured unimaginable terror
and unspeakable pain as she fought

for her dignity and her life.

I didn't order my thoughts then
and I cannot properly

order my thoughts now.

I shall simply transcribe the list.

Moira had sustained more than 65
separate injuries.

There was extensive bruising,
lacerations and abrasions to Moira's

neck, shoulder, upper arms,
collarbone,

upper chest, breasts,

thighs, inner thighs, knee, shins,
buttocks and deep in the sole

of her foot.

Moira had a bloodied face, black
eyes, a tear in one eyelid,

a tooth had been knocked out.

There was bruising behind her ears
and on her temples.

She had a broken nose
and a broken cheekbone.

There were also two breaks
in her neck around her thyroid,

which had damaged her windpipe.

Her stomach contents included
fern, soil and leaves.

There was debris in her mouth
which had been ingested

while she attempted to breathe,
causing asphyxiation.

This would have been when she was
turned over, when the accused

had finished with her and her face
was pushed into the mud.

Her windpipe had been severely
damaged and there was blood

in the bronchi leading to the lungs,
causing asphyxiation.

And this sustained attack
had been so savage

that it had caused Moira's brain
to revolve inside her skull.

Her brain was filmed with blood

and this injury would have resulted
in death within 30 minutes.

Therefore, the cause of death listed
on Moira's death certificate

was head and neck injuries.

The coroner said that injuries
to Moira's lower arms,

wrists and hands...

..showed that Moira had been trying
to defend herself.

My poor, wee girl.

She had a huge heart.

She had a huge heart and an amazing
positive spirit always.

But she had had no chance at all
with this inhuman frenzied brute.

The jury came in and it was over.

The verdict was guilty.

Guilty of everything.

As the first "guilty" was announced,
I watched one of the warders lean

over and handcuff Moira's murderer.

The judge went on to sentencing.

He said that the evidence against
the murderer was overwhelming.

That he had displayed a level of
evil rarely encountered,

and that Moira's murder had shocked
the nation.

He sentenced the prisoner
to life imprisonment

with a punishment part
of 25 years...

..which is the equivalent to
a minimum period

of 25 years in English law.

DOORS CLANG SHUT

Despite massive pain,

overwhelming pain and anguish,
she managed

to stand out there and deliver such

an eloquent speech...

..with the background of such
violence and horror,

that my overwhelming thought was,

"Wow, my mum is such a tower
of strength."

Darling, darling Moira.

We were so proud of you.

We will always be so proud of you,
and we will do the best

we can with our lives to make
them worthy of you.

You will live with us forever.

Thank you.

Beatrice Jones gave that very
undertaking to Moira

following her murder,

and boy, did she deliver on that.

And much, much more.

To date, we have helped over 1,000
families nationwide.
