Natalie wait got it
you asked me tell you when it's five
o'clock it is now five oh five I'm
meeting Josh for dinner tonight
the cab driver no bro buddy here we go
oh sorry done okay Jimmy they broke up
last Christmas now josh is the Accounts
Manager at Marcos brothers and he just
got offered a very big promotion and
he's taking me for idea to celebrate Shh
he says he has something very special
he wants to ask you tonight mm-hmm and
what masterpiece are you editing today
this is an incredibly important book it
actually reminds me of why I got into
publishing the first place it's full of
tragedy and triumph tragedy and triumph
the history of the cornfield war of 1931
this is the kind of book that could
change the world not if only ten people
read it but Natalie wouldn't it be nice
just once to we're gonna a book that
doesn't sit on a shelf and collect dust
like this both you know I felt that
Beverly Wilcox that's not right that's
hardly printing
she sells millions of copies just
because something is popular doesn't
necessarily mean it's good and doesn't
necessarily mean it's bad either won't
be honest don't you want to edit a book
that you can buy in an airport take on
vacation and read on a beach these tubes
blew up getting a tan
yes Beverly I know you're our number one
author
I couldn't tell yes I know you could go
to any other publisher in town but don't
worry we're going to find you an editor
who understands not just the Beverly
Wilcox brand but also the artists behind
the Beverly Wilcox brand which of course
would be you Beverly Wilcox hello
Beverly goodbye to YouTube
any luck not exactly I tried both of our
in-house editors three of our regular
freelancers and one from a temp service
downtown so far they've all said no
except the man from the temp service Oh
who would you heat a then he'd rather
edit plastic surgery manuals and work
with Beverly Wilcox Oh Beverly Wilcox
has millions of devoted readers all over
the world every time she exhales she
hits the bestseller list it's not like
the editor would actually have to do
anything why can't I just find one for
her next book you really want me to
answer that I certainly do not so you're
giving up no I have an idea
thank you this is new I feel now so how
was your day ah yeah same old same old
trying to change the world and every day
well I ordered us the usual and a Merlot
Merlot you didn't like Merlot
there's a lot of things I thought I
didn't like but I'm discovering new
stuff about myself all the time
sure yeah so how about I propose a toast
what should we drink to um to your
promotion here's to the promotion I
turned it down why I was walking toward
today and I saw all these be miserable
guys in their suits and shoes I thought
hey Josh this is really what you want to
do with your life you really want all
this responsibility you mean my job Jon
mortgage
oh wait what about us
I don't know I'm sorry
Avery now thank you sweetie how are you
I'm good I'm real good how are things in
LA that's kind of why I'm calling
how would you like to become a full
editor pick up and move
Natalie hi I'm Isabelle
Avery's assistant hi how did you know I
was from Portland lucky guess
let's get your luggage so how long do
you work for Avery long enough to know
why you're here I'm sorry oh I mean
Avery speaks very highly of you
she's looking forward to having you with
us here we are
look let me give you a little advice off
the record Los Angeles isn't Portland if
you're gonna make it here you're gonna
need to learn that what you see isn't
always what you get not should I follow
just be careful
remember King Kong was only three foot
stick wait what thank you oh wait you
look good you look great
three years I'm sorry is that right
that's true what they say time flies
when you're happily married see why keep
him wrong yes dinner's almost ready I'm
cooking tonight we are having you know
what I'm gonna surprise you how about a
glass of wine what do you have um
anything but Merlot yeah sure know how
to pick them that's a problem sweetie
you don't oh sorry
it's triple what when I was your boss
back in Portland I watched you go after
at the same time every time good-looking
fun to be around but but no real future
or even plans of having one you're not
just an editor of books now that you're
trying to be an editor in life you're
trying to take these rough drafts of
guys and make them into first editions
just lean on paper speech what's that
how my wife is famous among our single
friends for her dating theories she
believes you can't follow your heart
you have to follow your head I just
happen to believe that before you get
romantically involved with someone that
you should take a look at all that
refutes his goals his ambitions how
seriously he takes his responsibilities
in other words the guy you're dating
catches are good and pair of jeans he's
got a look good on paper it works for me
flattery will get you dessert
okay so what do I do I'm already taking
the first step you're here la is where
people come to reinvent themselves you
leave all your old bad habits behind and
start over with a new life and a new job
wait alright so tell me what's this new
project I'm working on it's such a
lovely night let's not talk shop
okay
oh oh oh my gosh
I'm so sorry I didn't know you were in
there okay I'm sorry does that mean
mocha with a little caramel day and all
these addresses
it's funny you don't strike me as a
door-to-door salesman Department be
joking I wish I was I've been on this
city and I can't find anything I'm just
a nice clean one bedroom like this Oh
cute long day might be done you want to
take a look would you mind on one
condition
we introduce ourselves I'm good you know
Cooper and you are Natalie Natalie
Holland
so the paint's do you pick out some
electric the plotters included clothings
pretty quiet I live outside if you need
anything and rents pretty decent for the
area yeah it is what's the catch okay my
loan is just a cool guy okay I love it
what should I fill out you know John I
do I am a book editor for Goldstein
publishing you try a book editor you
seen them I think asking me that's
illegal
what okay I'll say yes great so what
about you is this your full-time job of
course not
what do you do for a living oh well this
but not full-time cuts into my surfing
of course
hmm I'd appreciate it you did deposit
check to later tonight because I just
need to move some funds for my savings
it should be a problem just let me know
are you sure that's okay with the
landlord yeah just be some leeway okay
thank you again it's my pleasure another
serie you have a long way from Portland
so have you I have an office a whole
office and right over there is your very
first assignment at Goldstein publishing
Wow if I I'm very much Oh morning
Natalie's you're here of course she is
she's starting work today tonight
Avery then speak with you for a moment
Kenny great we were just about to
discuss Natalie's first watch it already
excuse me Natalie we'll be right back
Wilcox I thought she wasn't coming in
till noon
I guess you changed your mind let's go
everyone
wonderful surprise I'm so excited for
you to be Avery hi speak with you for a
moment
Nellie we were just talking about you oh
listen about miniskirts I'm so glad you
liked it
please meet the author Beverly Wilcox
Beverly this is Natalie Holland we'd
like her to edit your new book where's
my champagne and of all people Everly
Wilcox I mean you could have said
something about this before look woman I
know
I'm sorry I wanted you here but was
afraid if I told you why given how you
feel about her work you probably
wouldn't come you're probably right look
at it this way it's an opportunity for
you to move up from assistant to
full-time editor and to work for an
international best-selling author what
about the editors she's in the last book
why are you using him mr. Phil after he
never they finished he left the
publishing industry so there's nobody
else nobody I can afford to take a
chance with I'm mortgaged to the ceiling
with this place that if I lose Beverly
Wilcox to another publisher I'll be out
of business in a year I really need your
help
look she has much of Crawford's everyday
just go meet with her what's the worst
that could happen
and here we are for you miss Puckett's
oh excuse me I asked for the baby tomato
to be placed under the aioli mayonnaise
not on top no no no just leave it leave
it so you're from Portland mm-hmm tell
me Nadine
Natali yes Oh which of my books is your
favorite rich book yes um it's an unfair
question I know but if you had to choose
like this embrace of passion oh and what
was your favorite part my favorite part
my favorite part was when she realized
that he was meant to be with her all
along you mean until she died
yep until that part you just think I'm
ridiculous don't you I'm sorry you've
probably never read a single word I've
ever written and you think I have
absolutely no talent whatsoever and that
the kind of writing I do is nothing but
frivolous nonsense and you wonder why
anyone in their right mind would waste a
single dime reading one of my books
isn't that about it thank you so much
for your time miss Wilcox good look at
the book Oh
keep the receipt for lunch it's on Avery
thank you very much
hi Avery what did you say to her I'm
sorry I told you this was a really good
idea yeah are you kidding she loved you
what he just called me she told me if I
didn't put you on her book she was going
to take her next three somewhere else
it's unbelievable were you better start
believing you've got 30 days to deliver
desires and yeah that's perfect you
think yeah yeah looks good oh these
papers from the landline congratulations
you're almost a bona fide California
almost oh you didn't know well to make
it official you gotta have dinner at the
best burger joint in the city and where
would that be
what you mean Nikki's grill wasn't
you're welcome to La handbook must have
skipped over that part well fortunately
for you I happen to know the exact
location and and available to help you
complete your residency program how
about tonight tonight unless you got
other plans like maybe a book deadline
every hey coop Avery Avery coop this is
one of my closest friends and my boss
boss deadline got it rain check
there's nice to meet you Avery and you
thank you for helping anytime
isn't he cute adorable yeah I think she
works maintenance or something I'm gonna
when I first moved in and you're already
making dinner blooms Harden dinner it's
just a burger what did I tell you about
guys like him you told me to find
somebody with responsibility you know
what he takes his job very seriously
he's also a handyman
he's not just a handyman he also serves
hmm look just promise me you won't do
anything rash at least before you finish
Beverly's book deal Anneli it's cactus
oh I know somebody Dave need calm just
something you want to tell me well not
particularly well if you're looking for
a match for me put down that I like
redheads that like to meddle in their
employees love lives I am NOT mentally
I'm just trying to help you ever
considered the way to help Natalie the
most is just let her live her life let
her make her own dating decisions she's
terrible at it you're the guy she dated
back in Portland the one with the wispy
moustache and a scary leprechaun tattoo
oh I like that guy no I'm just looking
for someone for Natalie who has
something to offer you know someone who
can really bring something to the
relationship with her miscue a question
were you this picky when we first met
that's not fair no I think it is are you
saying you wouldn't pay attention to me
if I was working at a fast-food joint or
at a dollar store instead of as a
stockbroker of course I would have I was
in love with you was not some pusher
me ask another you do know this because
you care about Natalie or maybe just
maybe you're vicariously getting a
little through oh that is ridiculous
you see it's ridiculous but does it true
sorry sorry just get a little heated
yeah he's haha Natalie Holland meet Eli
Jackson
Eli miss Harlan oh you like Hey don't
you talk to my lady
sorry hey miss Holland pleasure to meet
you
Hans an editor she's working on a new
book
oh really you know like books huh movies
Oh sci-fi alien spaceships like that
really do you know where the ideas for
most of those movies come from books
great writers like Ray Bradbury arthur c
clarke if you like science fiction
you should read those you know what why
don't I give a couple to coop you could
read them tell them I think oh I guess
so yeah I mean thank you miss Holland
alright boys enjoy your night good night
Natalie good night Natalie hey no fair
that's that's cheaty here we have you
did she's been here since 8:00
whoo oh you mighty Beverly morning or
practically afternoon I already been to
Pilates had a half-hour session with my
holistic therapist and had a juice
cleanse and you look like you're still
dressed in what you were to bed oh I'm
sorry did we have an appointment that I
forgot about you're my editor Natalie we
don't need appointments I expect you to
be on call 24 hours a day until my book
is finished now these are my notes but
what you've done so far and this is my
list of everything we need to get done
today lunch reservations book pedicure
appointment complete questionnaire for
Vanity Fair magazine oh oh oh I almost
forgot I also need you to pick up my dry
cleaning
I think we're gonna need to come to
something understanding about boundaries
here I absolutely agree you do oh yes
and that's why I got you this instead of
using your personal phone now I have a
direct line to you any time of day or
night in case I have some idea or lotion
or just our creative whim about my book
and this will help us communicate better
so that something like today
never happens again okay and don't
forget about tonight tonight didn't
Isabelle tell you it's the bookbinders
annual charity event I beg your pardon
oh don't worry I've already RSVP'd for
us both Oh
both like me don't be obtuse noodling of
course you're going with me of course
how could I don't be sarcastic Natalie
it's giving you those ugly little
worried lines around your mouth it's
just that we have a deadline I don't
think I should be taking time away from
the boat this is about the book my dear
I'll appearance at this event author and
editor together which generate
excitement about desires love unbound
before you two gets to the printers
anyway Isabelle has all the information
the car will pick you up at 7:00 sharp
she's a monster I assume you were
talking about Beverly I mean not only
Weiss was editor well does she miss you
too for an errand she wasn't fetch think
she was gonna carry this thing around
24/7 so I gave a terrific call she's
just trying to include you in her life
it's part of her creative process and
does that include having to go to some
boring charity cocktail party charity
not the bullfighters foundation I didn't
want to tell you I knew he'd be upset
how does everybody know about this with
me the bookbinders is one of the most
important charity events in Los Angeles
publishing I've been trying to get her
to take me to that party for five years
now fantastic then you can go instead of
me it's invitation only
very exclusive all the most important
writers in the city will be there you
have to go you have to represent
Goldstein publishing mm-hmm but not like
that absolutely not cancel my meetings
for the rest of the day wait wait where
are we going we have our retail
emergency what difference does it make
what I'm wearing it's just a party but
not like that
there's no time oh hello the boss that
maintenance man oh hey I was uh just
checking on mrs. wolf down the hall she
can't reach the top of her fridge you
know anyway I was just stopping in to
see if you had those books for you I
great got him Thanks
so are we still on for that burger
okay well Natalie is very busy thank you
for stopping by she has a very important
social engagement this evening
okay thanks again bye-bye yeah yeah I
thought we agreed that you were going to
only date men who had ambition and goals
many who I know I know men who look good
on paper yes
how am I gonna find one of those you
wear that dress tonight you're not going
to have to look much longer you think
it's okay I feel like I'm pretending to
be somebody else it's LA that's the idea
oh I'm just starving I gotta eat
something
hello Beverly car is here where it is
it's downstairs yeah I'm on my way I'll
be tell them does she even know the word
goodbye Wow
I took your advice
that's the park at home yeah what's that
for of a bad habit every time I see a
beautiful woman I can't help but give
her a flower how long have you had this
habit five seconds oh sorry
yes Beverly whatever you do don't worry
about me sitting here in this car please
take all the time you need to discuss
gardening chips with the help coming
sorry you gotta go this is beautiful
really thank you
at Friday night sorry oh thank you
well at least you managed to put
together an outfit that doesn't look as
if you're going fishing
and where are you hey back here I just
sent my old friend Natalie off to the
bookbinders foundation with Beverly
Wilcox I dressed her up as an Ellen
party girl and shipped her off to the
Wolf's den well if I'd like to remind
you that Natalie is our old friend and
I'm sure you set her up for the book
minder thing just to keep the battle-ax
happy I thought bringing Natalie here
would help her and me I'm not sure it's
doing either what do you mean she was
spending her wheels up in Portland and I
thought bringing her here to help solve
my problem would also give her the push
she needed to make the leap from
assistant to editor was problem the
problem is the same as in the healthy
strengths she's a good editor with
strong opinions
not exactly what Beverly's asking boy he
said there was a great writer in Beverly
if she had a good editor I'm not sure
now is the time to test that theory what
are you doing by the way I'm watching
the ballgame and reading a book on pizza
yes advance copy brat huh you are
reading a cookbook and watching sports
that's really not that hard and this is
is a really good book I'm in the chapter
about the gluten-free dough it's
terrific right
like it's terrific yeah time will only
ship 10,000 copies meanwhile Beverly's
book isn't even at Kelly's yet and the
phone is ringing off the hook for hard
copies and edition dates better keep
Madame Beverly happy even if she is an
old battle-ax
just get her it was winning what game oh
really
keep reading me about gluten-free I know
oh good we're not too early I'm not too
late
how do you know you can't see the walls
but nobody's passed out yet thank you
yeah that should help I don't really
like champagne learn hello everyone
thank you so much for coming beside to
your other side great this is a
wonderful editor of my new book love's
desire unbound available this fall from
Goldstein publishing miss nearly Holland
oh well she keeps me honest well not to
us so tell us about yourself Natalie are
you from Portland oh yes for the last
book you innocent Oh
it was called tragedy and triumph it's
an amazing book it's a vivid account of
struggle and resilience of the human
spirit but it's not just a history book
it's like an incredible journey into the
dark part of our national identity but
ultimately it is a heartbreaking
reminder how every person on earth each
one of us can really make a difference
all we have to do is reach out to our
fellow man and say you matter to me you
matter to you I think that went on long
enough
don't take it personally you woke up
with these things aren't really
interested in their fellow man it's nice
about the social cause more about the
social events and what about you I did
it both really and it's a nice big tax
deduction you need a big tax deduction
I'm a lawyer in Los Angeles any plenty
of it and he's Bob Bob Lewis um Natalie
Holland yes you're the you jerk
how long you been working with her
Highness um two weeks three days and
just under nine hours well from what I
hear she eats editors for breakfast so
you lasted that long you must be doing
something right New York I'm sorry are
you gonna ask my father eventually yeah
I just came out on vacation and never
went back
do you surf uh well I've never really
had the time I've always been pretty
ambitious I started building my law
practice right away out here and thinks
it's really took off a lot of big plans
for the future too how about you how
about me what do you serve yes but
really we're done here I'll be waiting
in the car not for too long I hope I
gotta go sounds like well it was nice
talking to you Natalie's in Portland
hopefully we can do it again sometime
maybe with dinner I like that up from
New York via LA can I call you tomorrow
good well I know how to get all of you
and I'm not the only one I'm sorry
find my food oh hi you still there oh
absolutely
four ladies dressed like that Niki's is
always open pull up a seat Hey Oh
are you new no I'm jakey
there is no Nicki never was so why is it
called Nicki's we got a deal on the sign
ah coffee yes please okay
especial at the house tonight is burger
burger or burger and we're all out of
the first two I'll take a burger Hey
order a hockey puck straight up how do
you want hey you found the place
do you work here too oh really help out
every once in a while cuts into the
serpentine something like that yeah
fridge needs cleaning uh I did it
yesterday that's dirty again I'm gonna
get a clean bin good idea so take it the
party wasn't very good
what makes you say that well you're a
burger joint alone on Friday night they
go home early I didn't have a date in
fact I haven't had one since Portland
and even those weren't too successful so
I'm just trying a little careful with my
choices you know what does that mean
careful a friend of mine refers to it as
finding someone who looks good on paper
on paper yeah I am sorry that no okay
I'm just trying to understand so you
mean a guy who's stable like a real
breadwinner someone who has a good job
snappy dresser killer resume look I know
I'm not just you know a work resumes but
like a life resume got it it seems you
got it all worked out then look I didn't
mean to
don't worry about it when you know what
you want you got to go after it right
I'm gonna get you that burger hey what
happened to your friend if she had
someplace better to be
I haven't heard from Natalie oh yeah
probably because it's like two o'clock
in the morning do you think it's a bad
sign that she's in touch base I think
it's a sign that she's an adult I made
it very clear that I wanted to hear how
things went well I feel a strong about
why you just give her a call talk in the
morning Ben are you gonna ratchet it
down lady if I show an interest this is
a professional relationship with my most
important author you'll have to forgive
me Oh smart reason you're gonna keep
cool
I need to get some rest so turn off the
light when you're done late wow you like
it I just picked it up this morning
figured our first day will be a perfect
chance to try it out
did that have a fault
it's Beverly Wilcox his favorite lunch
spot we'll go somewhere else no no no no
I I love it okay
she shows up we ask for the check you
got it turned upside down and they find
me in the back of the library asleep Shh
between two stacks of books with a first
edition Winnie the Pooh on the left so
then what's it like working with Beverly
Wilcox oh that is challenging she wants
an editor but every time I try to change
some things she insisted I just put it
back the way it was why not just do what
she asks and take the paycheck yeah
that's what Avery said no no I just feel
like there's something special about her
work yeah it's worth about $10,000 per
word no not just that
I mean there is something underneath the
surface of her work something meaningful
that she's afraid to let anything know
about for fear of losing her readers
you're gonna help her share that with
the world I can't
she's already threatened to leave
Avery's publishing house if I push too
far
she's gone well you know that does
happen one good thing is convolve us it
wasn't for Beverly Wilcox
I would never met you
where is Alfonzo I took him out I know
you took him out I can read that what I
want to know is why well he slowed down
the narrative I think it was like she
belonged in another book I just didn't
think that we would miss him if you
didn't think we would miss him well
there's a newsflash for you we don't I
do put him back may I direct your
attention to the artwork on these walls
it does not see Natalie Holland it says
Beverly Wilcox I am the author and you
are my editor and don't you ever forget
it or I will
well they she lives up to her reputation
what are you doing here I want to
surprise you I got us a table for lunch
if there's no place over in Silver Lake
it's so hip it doesn't even have a name
I'll be right back
hey mr. boss I'm Avery
Bradley's boss and one of our closest
friends as a pleasure to meet you
and you Nana has been talking about you
for weeks but I was beginning to think
you were just a figment of her
imagination no I'm the real thing yes
you certainly are Avery I need to talk
to you about that early it can wait
enjoy your lunch take all the time you
need it was very nice trust me
anything's better than that surfing
janitor she was after last month
all right watch this hey hey dude
fight through Big Ben Oh kiss miss Holly
hey miss Holland just a second okay I
don't think it's a friend of mine it
wanna hey hon what are you doing it's
Annie like that's cute
hey so did you ever read those books
that I gave you oh yeah twice they were
amazing they were so cool you got any
more absolutely
I can drop some by later thank you for
solid you know you got some complaints
award oh that it's a tempting offer but
yeah I don't think Bob's the mini-putt
type I said supposed to mean nothing you
just don't seem like the kind of guy who
has time for fun oh you know what I feel
like a round of golf after all
thank you we're all tied up you sink
this putt we win game misses we lose
thank you Oh crusher how about let me
get interested are you say coupe Oh
better much for us oh I don't think
that's a good idea how much we talking
about just enough to make it exciting
I say five dollars think Bob means a
little bit more nice look at the pine
our rules are rules Bob take the shot
anything look I would really broke the
bank oh look at this time gotta get back
to the office
my thing you you chuck thanks for the
books miss Holland thanks for playing
guys
you'll miss on purpose didn't ya Bob
needed me to lose more than that he's
all wrong for her you know well she
knows what she wants
can't falter for that time in this story
can I help you with that
oh don't worry about it I don't wanna
bother you I'm just taking this stuff
down mini garden how do you run there
can't say that I have home well it is
great one come with us
don't bother miss Holland do you lie she
has a deadline she does have time for
stuff like this I'll get my shoes
no no today I just do this you're fine
okay all right no the thing about
planning these kind of vegetables is you
have to be careful with the fertilizer
tell me more of a wizard of plants plant
wizard ah I fear I cannot do lady secret
the ages don't only to a select few
all right I go get some water it was
great like right in the middle of the
city used to be a factory or something
but it got to her now it was just
sitting here until I was bought and
donated to the mentor program so do you
and Cooper mana match you kidding he
started this whole thing
community garden was his life really
yeah he says well ski changed the water
while getting its in did you say that
yeah you know we come here often unless
playing basketball or surfing or you
know you're saying it but sometimes
please homework - well no it's perfect
they go first
you just want people to know that I
probably be injured with that how long
have you guys known each other since I
was a kid like a look a long time it
this thing called la Mentor Program when
I take your really guy it's great that
you're helping mentor coop I mean key
you oh what's so funny nothing
we're talking about you at all yeah
right you guys hungry
Oh starving all right yeah these are
really good right they are best tacos in
town and you almost excellent parties
mmm they come wherever you are I think
it's important to have good food
available in the neighborhood like this
not everyone can afford Crawford's you
know Hey no charge
well there was a not for coop not for
friends coop Yelp is out a while back so
as long as I'm making tacos hi Natalie
still hasn't called should I go over to
her place no I'm sure she's working have
you heard from Beverly I haven't seen
her since she laid it all out for
Natalie the other day well that scene
wasn't just for Natalie she wants
everyone to know what her books mean to
Goldstein publishing Natalie can pull
this off I sure hope so we have to keep
a close eye on the situation until the
book is in our hands ready for the
printer got it I don't think I overstate
the case and saying our livelihood
depends on whether Lea Wilcox and her
continued association with Goldstein
publishing
oh well that's comforting tell me about
it bye
thanks for coming with this massage well
thanks for letting me tag along
I had fun oh you're not gonna forget to
bring those books right I am NOT gonna
forget about those books that's where he
lives huh funny looks like this one
empty lot or sooo truck they don't look
like much on paper
oh I'm just saying sometimes paper
doesn't tell all still thank you for
today first showing me around
you're welcome it wasn't exactly the
type of places you're used to but okay a
little tired
well maybe you can do it again sometime
I know a couple of great thrift shops an
amazing soup kitchen cuz I am
I'm sorry I shouldn't be doing this I
know he needs one too let's go on paper
right no that's not fair that's no
everything what is it was wrong okay
I'll meet you good morning not only
beautiful isn't it
I come up here to remind myself that
there are still lots of good things
about this city right so not all just
overrun with devious underhanded
treacherous you said there was an
emergency yes absolutely there was
unfortunately the patient died you
didn't like it let's see um you took out
the diamond necklace subplot you removed
all the flashbacks from the 18th century
the dialogue now sounds like something
you would overhear at a laundromat and
no Alfonso so in a sentence I would say
no Natalie I did not like it okay let's
work on it together well that's a
problem isn't it you don't know what
that means really together that's what
I've been trying to do no that's not you
have some preconceived idea about my
work and my readers and how you're gonna
change everything and make it better but
it's not my better
it's not even our better it's only your
better okay I am so sorry if I have
offended you in any way I'm just trying
to bring some integrity into the
projects integrity well I've had just
about enough of your integrity if my
manuscript is not restored to its
original form and submitted
as complete with absolutely no changes
by Monday morning I will be Goldstein
publishing am i clear
absolutely good well enjoy the walk back
down
watch out for the dog poop just give me
one minute and we are out of here I'm in
hurry Wow ones last time you said that
just before I said Beverly's last up to
the printer so things are going as
planned not sure you well Natalie smart
I'm sure she's got your back
speaking of Natalie she's dating someone
she told you never been married
top of his law class and just made
partner at one of the best entertainment
firms in depth how do you know that
you've got to stop I have an obligation
to protect one of my best friends you
got no shame I have a feeling that all
the pieces are about to fall into place
for Goldstein publishing and Natalie
Holland it's a win-win so are you going
to buy me lunch or what don't you buy me
lunch
I was incorrigible mm-hmm that's how you
love me there are a lot of reasons why I
love you that is not one of them mm-hmm
let's get out here and start okay I'll
treat but as long as it's cheap
incorrigible she's bluffing
you think I know she hardly because you
sit up there and then you do it again
regular yeah to go you're right about
this place this work is fantastic bit
thick though you probably save up about
a third increase their profit margins by
20%
Thanks now your friend yep how's your
friendly today
so what am I gonna do you're her editor
make the changes you want but she likes
it or not she will back down and what if
she doesn't
and if Beverly leaves Goldstein
publishing will go out of business
Avery will lose everything she's not
gonna leave trust me
what's going on no no I assure you it
was simply a case of we here at
Goldstein publishing feeling we had gone
as far as we could with these Wilcox's
work and that it was time for us to both
Emily part company in search of fresh
inspiration and these rapidly changing
times that's the only comment I'll be
making at this time thank you you had to
do it didn't you Avery what happened
what do you mean what happened you know
very well what happened she told me she
warned you she told me she said if you
changed her manuscript she was going to
leave and you did and she has no yes she
signed a new deal this morning the news
is already online that's the tenth phone
call I've had since I got here believe
me she can't just leave Frank there's
got to be a contract or something it was
on a boat by boat basis
she's taking her name all her materials
everything that leaves us with two
cookbooks and a guide to famous curb
markers in New England to release for
the coming year I'm sorry I yeah well
you're not the only one Oh Natalie I'm
sorry I didn't mean that
it's okay
don't take anything else down until I
come back
are you doing I'm gonna find her I'm
gonna talk some sense into her she
doesn't have to listen to you she can do
anything she wants she's Beverly Wilcox
she's huge wasn't it you who told me
that King Kong was only three slices
excuse me Beverly I'm sorry didn't
replace because he for just two minutes
Natalie a Bob Lewis Natalie Holland
Natalie used to work for me the mob
represents were field publishing they're
handling my next book
I am excuse me
that is so odd she acted as if she knew
you I'm sorry sorry
hey Natalie are you doing your loan
today
it's a Hoover room nah haven't seen come
to think of it I haven't seen him since
he was in here the other day when you
and suit were having lunch um
okay if he comes by fits just tell my
stop fine Jake horse poop well just like
I was telling the lady he's not here
what's wrong it's my mom she couldn't
breathe SWAT call 9-1-1 the ambulance
came but they said i mean they built a
sign for stuff my brother's at work and
I can't get ahold of them truck took the
bus over here and it's okay yeah no way
to work working a to the hospital and
everything's in the morning Jake called
coop and we'll meet him there Thanks
you read things no I I don't I'm
homeless
says they take her away I'm not quite
sure where exactly but you know she sure
is nothing fun ever makes her happy it
is you know what why don't you give that
to mama we get to the hospital
really thanks miss Holly no thanks yeah
just so I'm dragging you into this
I'm sure you have more important things
to worry about
yeah why starting to change my mind
about what's important what do you mean
well you might not understand this it's
a little bit older but they haven't been
very nice to her friend truth I thought
I wanted to spend my life with someone
who had an important job money important
big plans for the future
I was following some stupid map in my
head I should have just been following
my heart's you mean you Big Bob when he
should have take two are you actually a
30 year old I did it but you know it's
the great thing about Co he's both he's
a great guy and he's loaded well I'm not
sure having your own surfboard means
your motive but only on a proper
building does excuse me yeah used to be
this big Wall Street guy Heelys bunch of
buildings like Nicky screw anybody a lot
for our garden too are you sure about
this mm-hmm so secret or anything just
doesn't think it's a big deal
turning Eli who your mom's gonna be fine
they want to keep her overnight but
she's gonna be okay
I see her up tonight she's resting I'll
bring it back first thing in the morning
all right
why don't you go wait in the truck thank
you she's gonna be okay right yeah it's
gonna need an operation no way course
Ellen should be fine are you going to
pay for that too
all right you want to know who John
Cooper really is MBA from Stanford five
years on Wall Street a lot of money you
don't have to do this
miserable his friends were greedy
shallow jerks that would have sold their
souls for the latest sports car so he
walked he burned his suits gave away his
shoes and started over now he lives in
this tiny apartment charged his beat-up
pickup truck in his hacker that he's
never been in his whole life why didn't
you tell me are you serious just like
present you my resume I'm the same man I
was yesterday but that wasn't good
enough for you on paper
can i and i still cash in my rain check
can't see the weather changing anytime
soon
see your own
hello Beverly I need to speak with you a
little busy right now I need to see you
okay where are you hello Beverly may I
come in please
oh you're moving back to Orion well I'm
sorry to hear that
I figured I should get out before it's
too late you know back in Oregon I was a
pretty good editor down here I turned
into a lousy one and I need an worst
person I think maybe you're being a
little too hard on yourself it's your
friend Bobby sure that opinion Bob and I
aren't exactly on speaking terms huh
oh this he's got that in common you know
I figured it out all by myself I'm not
exactly an idiot you know he used you to
get to me and then he convinced you to
do the exact thing that would make me
leave Goldstein publishing and I did and
I was wrong so are you gonna go back to
Avery unfortunately I can't
I signed a two-year contract with Bob's
company his company owns my name my face
and the next three books by Beverly
Wilcox so maybe they'll find you a
better editor than me would you just
stop that just stop that you are an
excellent editor frankly you're probably
the best I ever had Bob Lewis ironically
enough and all this gave you some very
good advice I did need you to stand up
to me
not your fault and I can't let go of
things like Alphonse Ouma
very cute apartment reminds me of one I
had when I first got to town back then
my name was Margaret Bunn and I had one
book a little spy thriller I'd written
no I was sure it was gonna sell right
away turned out
nobody wanted a spy thriller written by
a 22 year old from Indiana so I looked
in the mirror and I did what everyone
who comes to LA does as soon as they
crossed the city line I picked two
street names and reinvented myself as
Beverly Wilcox romance novelist Wow
she's done very well for herself yeah
she has but Margaret Bunn still misses
that spy thriller only I had such a
wonderful lead character a renegade
espionage agent named Alfonso well I
think it's about time I said goodbye to
him anyway I just stopped by to tell you
how sorry I am about everything that
happened just to wish you all the luck
in the world with whatever happens next
Thank You Beverly my friends call me
Maggie
I love to the end this sheep is running
that's great
she'll probably be running a marathon
this summer hope so
sure was nice of his heart to help us
out that day huh yeah nice you talked to
her lately
nope why not it's complicated no it's
not she told me herself that other guy
was insane what really life is you you
I'm miss Holland she likes guys with
money and real estate it's yeah but she
know you have that stuff when she told
me she liked you what yeah he went to
the hospital she was looking for you all
day just to show you how she felt when
she cared about you okay wait she said
this to you before you told her anything
yeah I wanted totally rich shout out
weird only she didn't want to know
between you and me
and she liked it better when she thought
you were just some sort of mom yes I
don't know Goldstein publishing yeah hi
Natalie hall please miss Holland no
longer works here well do you know where
she is
her friend Fritz from the apartment
building oh is this a surfing janitor
sure dude where she is she should be on
her way to the airport her flight leaves
in two hours
I'll get specs
come on
thank you
Oh
every he's got talk
Portland has it left huh hey what are
you doing here
is that my region there's a whole storm
imminent
aren't you supposed to be in a plane
I just Fred the most amazing book okay
that's great welcome everyone and thank
you all for being here at the inaugural
launch of the new Gulf seed cooper
publishing company many of you know that
this is our very first year working with
our new business partner mr. John Cooper
you couldn't be more excited about our
new releases featuring our new line of
novels for young adults being curated by
our very own Natalie Holland very big
announcement we have a new author
joining us at the Goldstein Cooper
imprints many of you may remember her
earlier work under a different name
which due to certain contract and legal
restrictions I am unable to say but here
with her new very first exciting
political thriller Alphonsus web which
is already pre-sold over 1 million
copies please welcome Margaret London
thank you thank you all so much I just
can't tell you what a thrill it is to be
back working with such wonderful
publishers once again and a very special
thank you to a young lady without whom
Margaret Bunn might never have left
Indiana Natalie Holland thank you for
coming so Wilcox retiring there's going
to be a gap in romantic fiction market
what are we gonna do about that I don't
know much about fiction but I got a
pretty good idea about the romantic um
chapter one
