I can't remember a time before
I could play the piano...

..and I think that maybe that's
the same with Lucy, isn't it?

It's just that, maybe that's why
we get on so well musically,

is that we both have that kind
of natural attachment to the piano

as the way that we
express ourselves.

much more so than with words.

She sees the world differently.

She sees the world in
a beautiful way.

I wish I saw the world
the way Lucy sees it, I do.

She's just happy.

But when she was born, the first
thing I remember saying was,

"Is she OK? Is she all right?"

And they went to me,
"Yeah, she's fine. She's fine."

And yet, at nine months,
she was diagnosed with

advanced bilateral retinoblastoma.

It's cancerous tumours of the eyes.

It's a rare child cancer.

It was horrendous, just horrendous.

I look back on that now
and I go, "We did it.

"We did it as a team."

hospital with us,

And the nurse came over,

and she thought that it was

And she said, "No, no way."

And that's when Daniel came in.

Daniel understands her
and she understand him.

It's like having a musical
soulmate.

She's got a phenomenal talent

and she wants to share the talent.

losing your sight

that makes you better at music?

Some scientists think there might
be.

An amazing number of children
with special needs

have a particular musical talent.

Someone like Lucy
can probably hear

about ten notes at once,

so that means, when she's listening
to an orchestra or a choir,

she can hear what every single
player is singing or playing.

The miracle child,
I'm gonna call her that today.

Blind miracle girl.

The miracle thing, it's that,

it's a way of...putting a label
on, or saying, using...

I mean, even using the
word blind, saying,

"The blind girl," you know?

The fact that she's blind,
that's not her main characteristic.

I don't think of her as
a blind person, you know?

I think of her as a musician.

RADIO: Well, that is, that was Lucy,

playing Debussy's Arabesque
in the final.

By her side for many, many years

has been her piano teacher,
Daniel Bath, who joins us now.

Daniel, hello. Hello.

So you've been teaching Lucy
for around ten years,

but talk us through the
method that you initially used.

Well, I first met her when she was,

I think she had just turned
four, actually.

# Fish are jumping... #

Because obviously she can't
see where the fingers are going,

I would play the piece,

and she would hold on to
the top of my hand,

so she could feel what
my fingers were doing.

So through that she learned what
the fingering patterns were.

She'll hear a piece of music,

like on the radio or something,
and then she'll know it,

she'll remember it,
because her memory's so good.

And then she'll sit down at
the piano,

and she'll play it straight away.

And, to be honest,

a lot of my work has just been
training the fingers

to make the music that's already
in her head, in her memory.

I always think of it like
a sculpture, you know?

You've got a block of marble
that's roughly the right shape

and very gradually chip away at it.

We hope that more children can get
access to that,

we need more access
to music education for everybody.

but Lucy, for me, is like

How do you and Lucy deal
with pressure differently?

Um, she doesn't care

and I go to pieces, that's basically
how it works.

All the time, I feel
a massive amount of responsibility

and a lot of that is
because I know what she can do,

I know what she's capable of doing.

Yeah, when I start to think about
it,

it's actually completely
overwhelming.

I didn't know working with Lucy
was going to become

such a big part of his life.

Daniel doesn't like doing things
by halves.

It does involve doing
lots of different things

and going to lots
of different places.

He basically works
pretty much all the time.

about his attitude to life

cos most of us do
what we think we can do,

and he does what he thinks

I think it was teaching Lucy,
really, that made him

even more aware than he was before
of how we don't live

in a society where people get
what they need to make the most

of their talents.

originally asked to do.

It does worry me because it's not

they're expected to be an adult,

aren't they? They're expected to be
an adult at 18.

That isn't going to happen
with Lucy, it's not.

She's always going to need help
and it terrifies me.

but I'm thinking to myself,
"How old am I going to be

"when I leave this earth
and who's going to look after her?"

I'm scared of what age
I'm going to go at

because, you know, I'm 47 now
and I know I'm getting older.

Sorry. It's very hard
when I talk about future with Lucy -

it's the worst part.

Lucy's piano lessons have had
a profound impact on her life

and on my life as well.

You know, I learn a lot from her

about how to deal with life,

about how to deal
with life's difficulties, and...

In 2010, I had a mental breakdown

and I had...I had... I was...

..quite unable to do very much
for...

..for...

..quite a long time.

And it was a result of
too much stress

and just working very hard.

For a lot of the time,
I couldn't play the piano -

it made me feel sick.

Yeah, it was a terrible time
for the rest of the family

and obviously I feel terrible
about it

because of putting them
through all of that.

I was looking down a very dark
tunnel and that was it.

No-one really seemed to be able
to do much...

..to help. Erm, he's probably not
the easiest person to help.

Yeah, he just had to completely
leave

all the different jobs
that he was doing.

You know, that wasn't like a,

"Oh, I think I should stop,"
kind of quit. It was like,

"Oh, I can't actually leave
the house," kind of quit.

He used to just put loads and loads
of work into doing up the garden -

that helped him a lot.

So, obviously,
when he overworks now,

it does make me anxious

because, um,

you know, we don't really want
to be back there again.

After a while,
a friend called me up.

Lucy's school had been in touch
with him

because they needed someone
to teach her the piano.

And he said to me, he said, the only
person he could think of

who would be suitable for doing this
was me.

And I said to him, "No, I can't do
it because I've got to be careful."

He kept coming back to me,
so every month or so he'd say,

"We still haven't found anyone
to teach this girl."

Anyway, after a few times,
I eventually said,

"Oh, all right, then. Go on, then."

And so I went to see her,

and it was, yeah,
it was just really fantastic.

Communicating through music
in a really direct

and immediate and profound way,
which I'd never really done before.

I really look forward
to Lucy's lessons every time

because it's like
the place where I'm meant to be.

It's a space where we can both be
ourselves in a really full way.

I think being a full-time
professional musician

is such a long way off

I knew this would happen.

I have always said
she'd play on massive, big stages

and you can't get a bigger stage
than the King's coronation concert.

I've got no doubt in my head that
there's going to be more offers -

there's already been
a couple come through for July.

It's like, "Whoa!"
It's just, "Whoa!"

It is scary because Daniel is
a big part of that

and I don't want to, you know,
put too much on him.

I'm rather hoping that things will
die down a bit.

It's just really important
that we don't take on too much

because obviously, when you're
starting out, temptation is

to say yes to whatever comes in
because you think,

"Oh, it's great,
it's just more exposure."

But, for Lucy, especially,
that is the wrong thing to do.

Apart from anything,
it wouldn't mean anything to her.

I know Daniel is protective
of her, bless him,

but there will be other things
coming in

and it's something we need to
sort of discuss at some point,

as to whether he can do it
and he can handle it.

It's a difficult one,
it really is,

cos they've been together
for so long.

The most important thing is

of work is in her best interest.

Personally, I'm quite opposed to
