- [Becca] After Mr. Morton left

and the earthquake shook things up,

everyone was thinking a lot about Australia.

- [Jack] Oh no!

- It still won't come back!

- Mine will, watch!

Oh, it didn't.

(Becca laughs)

- We'll get it this time.

Why don't we try it together?

- Alright Becca.

- Remember, use your wrist.

Oh what happened?

- Didn't work.

- [Fritz] I think it looks good Father.

- Yes but looks aren't the important quality.

Depending on how tall the sails are,

we may need to extend this outrigger here.

- If we did that Father, maybe we could store

extra supplies on the outrigger?

- Below the water line.

- Hello, how is the marine design work going?

- We keep coming back to the

same design as the first boat we built.

And you know what happened to the one.

- But Ernst, the design of the boat was good,

it was the storm that sank it.

- Anna on a voyage as long as the one to Australia,

we need to expect a storm.

We can't count on having good weather every inch of the way.

The other boat was made of heavy hard wood.

With that open hull, when water got inside it,

it just became too heavy to float.

- But what about using a lighter wood?

- Lighter wood would be weaker and more easily broken apart.

- Oh dear!

- But a vessel of lighter timber

would still sink if it flooded,

because of the added weight of cargo.

- So we have to come up with something

that just won't allow any water inside,

no matter what the circumstances.

- But can you design a boat like that Ernst?

- Yes, I think so but we're running out of time.

- Yay!

- It came back to me, I did it!

- Teach me now Becca.

- Sure, I'll teach you everything.

Now you just have to be sure you follow my directions,

- [Fritz] Oh Becca! - [Becca] What is it?

- Could you go and get some water please?

- Sure, when we get back I'll start your lesson.

- Thanks!

- [Fritz] Maybe we could weave a hatch cover out of leaves?

(Mother humming)

- Anna, what is that you're so busily sewing?

- This? I'm sewing together all the odd cloth I can find.

We'll need it for the sail.

Our other sail disappeared when the first boat sank.

We have no more large pieces of cloth.

- What about our sheets and bed linens?

- Of course we'll use them,

but they're all getting worn out here and there

and even with the good parts all sewn together

we won't have as large a sail as we had before.

- It's not fair, we could use some good luck,

it's about time.

- It Mr. Morton were here we could sure use his help.

- [Becca] Tom Tom was still with us

but he was real lonesome.

He missed Mr. Morton more than any of the rest of us.

- It's awfully hot today.

- Yes it is.

- If we could just have a little shower

it would be a big relief.

- We haven't had any rain since before the earthquake.

- Has it really been since then?

- We do seem to be having a spell

where fortune is running against us.

- I wonder where Becca's gone to?

She's been gone awhile.

Becca, Becca!

- [Becca] Coming!

- I thought you were going to get some water.

- I tried to, could you put some more rope on the bucket?

It won't reach the water!

- Ernst, now the well is drying up!

- [Father] Let's see.

Jack, don't lean over the well.

- Right Dad!

There, that should do it.

Since it's so shallow, try not to stir up the mud.

I'm not sure this is totally due to the weather.

- [Mother] My poor garden, I've got to do something!

There isn't any sign of rain.

We've got to bring water here.

- [Jack] How comes the water's so little Daddy?

- Don't know son.

But let's see what we can do about it.

- [Fritz] I see.

- [Jack] Oh, look! - [Becca] Hey!

- [Father] There now, this ought to do the trick.

Let's see, Becca, the bucket.

- Right Dad.

- [Father] Well how's the water brigade coming?

- [Fritz] Not bad Father, actually I'm kind of enjoying it.

- [Jack] Yeah, my feet like how the mud feels!

- [Becca] It's good to cool off a bit.

- [Mother] Look at that,

I'm certain they're already greener than they were!

- Green is good!

- Marvelous.

- It's nothing marvelous Becca,

look when you get hungry you get all limp and droopy too,

but it passes as soon as you stuff something in your mouth.

- What? You, you shouldn't make fun of a helpless girl!

Take that! (splashes water)

- [Fritz] Hey, watch out with that!

(Mother laughs) - That's not a helpless girl.

- [Tom Tom] Dr. Robinson! (Brewster barking)

Dr. Robinson, Dr. Robinson!

- Tom Tom? What is it?

Take your time son, now what is it Tom Tom?

- Ship, coming here!

- A ship, are you sure?

Where is it, what direction?

(Mother gasps)

- I'll get the binoculars.

- [Becca] You need any help Fritz?

- [Fritz] No!

Father?

- Is it a ship?

- [Father] No, it's not a ship.

- [Fritz] What is it?

- Can you tell Dad?

- [Father] It's our canoe.

- [Father] The one Mr. Morton took.

- [Mother] What? Can you see him Ernst?

- [Father] No, no I can't.

- [Fritz] I wonder what happened?

- Where are you going Tom Tom?

(suspenseful music)

- [Father] Tom Tom, what are you doing?

- [Becca] Tom Tom! Tom Tom!

- [Father] Tom Tom! - [Becca] Tom Tom!

- Becca here.

(Tom Tom panting)

Tom Tom.

You don't need to go any further,

it's floating this way.

Let's just wait.

Tom Tom wait!

- Oh, Mr. Morton!

- Is that you Tommy?

- Are you alright?

- [Mr. Morton] Take it easy!

- You take it easy, you're suffering from exposure.

(Mr. Morton groaning)

- [Mr. Morton] I'm suffering alright, leave off!

- No, I'm going to keep putting this salve on your sunburn,

a few more hours and you wouldn't have made it.

That'll do for now.

Tom Tom would you help Mr. Morton with his shirt?

- Here it is the water!

- [Jack] Water, yeah!

- Give it to me!

- Becca, pour out a little, more.

- Hey what are you doing, I need a drink, I'm thirsty!

Give me some more of that.

- [Father] No, you're really dehydrated Mr. Morton,

we'll wait till later.

When your tissues absorb that, you'll get some more.

- If it'd only rained, I would have made it.

- Made it? To what?

Where on Earth were you going Mr. Morton?

- [Mr. Morton] According to what I remember

about the shipping lanes,

a trader bound for India is passing about

100 miles north of here, right about now.

I was going to - [Father] Going to try

and catch the ship and ask for help?

Yes, that's right.

- All by yourself?

- That boat of yours couldn't have carried everybody.

The business of living is to go on

living as long as you can.

- Be that as it may,

you should have said what you were doing.

- You wouldn't have given me your boat if I had.

- No we wouldn't of,

we worked long and hard to build that boat.

We wouldn't of given you food and a rifle either.

You think you can just go and

- Mr. Morton? When you're a little better

we'd like to have you come and see us.

Then my wife will prepare you something nice to eat.

- No, I'll go back to the cave.

Tommy come on!

- Mr. Morton, I'm afraid your cave isn't there anymore.

- The earthquake destroyed it.

- Earthquake? I expected it.

- What do you mean, you knew the earthquakes were going

to occur before they actually happened?

- Yes I did, didn't expect it so soon though.

- If you had been in that cave Mr. Morton

you wouldn't be here now.

- I have the luck of the devil.

It's a wonder I made it back here alive.

Yes, a true wonder.

- [Father] Mr. Morton, please come and stay with us.

It'll be easier to treat your burns

and Tom Tom has been staying with us

ever since you went away.

- Nah, I'm not going to stay over to your house.

- [Father] What?

Why won't you?

- [Mr. Morton] I'm not just being polite,

trying not to put you out,

I just don't want to live so close to you folks.

(ominous music)

- [Becca] Mr. Morton wouldn't come live with us

but he decided to stay in the tree cottage we built

for my parents wedding anniversary.

It was fun watching Tom Tom work.

- [Tom Tom] Becca hand me a pole.

- You bet!

- Now rope.

- [Becca] Here!

- Tom Tom builds good.

- Mr. Morton's sure lucky he came back.

(Mother humming)

- Well how's the cottage coming along?

- Fine, Tom Tom is so good at what he's doing

it's just best to stay out of his way.

His technique makes me very nervous.

- That so?

- [Father] Yes.

Anna I'd appreciate it if you'd prepare some

food for Mr. Morton, soup or something light,

he's had nothing at all for the past two days.

- If that's what you want Ernst.

But, I must say, that it's not my preference.

I just can't tolerate that man, he's so selfish.

- Tom Tom is delighted that he's back here.

Something in him really responds to the fellow.

- That may very well be.

I tell you Ernst, looking at that man

I'm unable to see the draw,

I just have to trust that there is something good in him.

- [Becca] Rebuilding the tree cottage went so fast,

that in a couple of hours it was almost done

and Tom Tom was the one who did just about everything,

all by himself!

- [Becca] Tom Tom!

(Tom Tom laughs)

(Father groaning)

- [Father] Maybe what I really need is a lock.

Morton will want this.

What in the world?

- [Mr. Morton] To the man who finds this note.

In the event that I am not alive,

I am writing this.

- What?

- [Mother] A bowl please Becca.

- [Becca] Right Mom!

- [Mother] The clear broth is for Mr. Morton.

While this fresh fruit and the stew is for Tom Tom.

- You going now?

- Yes.

- I'll go too!

- Something the matter?

Is there something wrong with this face?

Tommy do you want to stay here with me then?

So tell me, did you have problems

with the Robinsons while I was gone?

- Huh uh, they're kind to me.

- Well that's good isn't it?

- Yes.

- Talk to me.

- Well, I like it here with you better.

- Well Tommy I'm glad to hear that.

(Mr. Morton coughing)

- Oh no!

Oh I'm sorry, I forgot you're burned!

Are you hurt?

- No Tommy I'm just fine.

- [Becca] Mr. Morton we've got you food!

We're bringing it up.

- [Mother] Mr. Morton please eat it before it gets cold.

- I don't recall asking you to make me anything.

- You couldn't ask because you were sick,

in order to heal more quickly you should eat the

most nutritious food you have available to you Mr. Morton.

- Thanks but I don't need your food.

This is the best diet for the sick that I know of.

- What? Not green coconuts!

Raw fruits and vegetables can make you nauseous.

- Madame your tasteless Swiss dishes make me infirm.

- Oh you say Swiss dishes easily enough Mr. Morton

but I don't believe you've ever had Swiss food!

For your information sir,

it was not my idea to cook anything for you!

My doctor husband prescribed food.

Eat it if you want to get well!

- [Becca] I didn't know what to do,

I've never seen anyone else make my Mother so angry.

Tom Tom you should eat yours even if

Mr. Morton doesn't want any.

- [Mr. Morten] Hold it! Becca is your Mother gone?

- She's gone, she went real quick.

- Good!

- Oh Mr. Morton!

- That's not so bad.

Tommy let me have your bowl!

(Becca and Tom Tom laughing)

Delicious!

(Mr. Morton slurps)

- Anna, what's the matter?

Are you alright dear?

- Fine thanks, you all just enjoy your dinner.

Right now food would just stick in my throat.

- What is going on?

- It's about the food you had Mom make for Mr. Morton.

He said it didn't want it,

that Swiss food would just make him sick.

- Really?

- Such a man, if he wants it so badly

then just let him starve!

(Becca and Fritz gasp)

- Anna, darling, please read this.

- What do you have there Ernst?

- I found this out in the boat.

It's something that Mr. Morton wrote.

- That man wrote it?

- [Father] Yes, he seems to have intended it

for whoever discovered the boat.

- For whoever discovered the boat?

- Everything's in the note.

- To the man who finds this note in

the event that I am not alive,

I am leaving this note to (Mother gasps)

Oh no!

- [Mr. Morton] I am writing this so you'll proceed with all

dispatched to the rescue of six unfortunate castaways.

They are the good family of Dr. Ernst Robinson

and a boy of Australian birth.

They have been cast ashore on a jungle island,

located near longitude 155 degrees east

and latitude 10 degrees south.

This island is isolated, there is no other land

for a radius of at least 120 miles.

The island's geography is as follows,

it is volcanic in origin with a

towering rocky mass in the center,

surrounded by coral reefs,

however there is a channel through

the reef on the leeward side.

This family has small children,

please for the love of Heaven,

rescue them.

(light instrumental music)

- Mr. Morton was intending to

sail that little boat 100 miles.

That way one would find out about us being here.

- So he never meant to go off and save himself.

- Son, he meant for all of us to be saved,

even if it cost him his own life.

- Why wouldn't he tell us that's what he was doing?

- That's a difficult one to answer Anna.

- I believe he has the sort of character

that really cares for others.

I think he didn't want to stir up our hopes

and dreams then have us be disappointed.

- I don't understand this.

Why do you think a man like that

would say those awful things he said to me?

- That's another hard question to answer.

There are people who are just not

capable of displaying their true emotions,

so they act badly.

- I think that's true Mother.

- What's true dear?

- As soon as you left Mr. Morton acted completely different.

He started eating his soup and said it was delicious.

- Did he really?

- But he didn't stop because then he started eating all the

food that you'd brought up for Tom Tom.

He liked it so much he licked his lips.

(Father laughing)

- That's not too good for Tom Tom.

(Fritz laughing)

- No Tom Tom was happy to see him eating good food.

- Is that so?

- Well the man has many sides we don't know about.

Now we know that what we see might not be what he means.

- Oh Father! I forgot to tell you,

Mr. Morton would like it if you would go

and talk with him after dinner.

- Oh? I will then.

- Thank you very much. - [Jack] Welcome.

(Mother humming)

- Mother sure seems happy now.

- She is.

- I'll just have to show Mr. Morton what good

Swiss cooking really tastes like.

(Becca and Fritz laugh)

- What's the matter with you two?

- [Becca] Nothing Mother! - [Fritz] Nothing Mother!

(Becca and Fritz laughing)

- [Becca] Father went to see Mr. Morton

and they sat until very late.

I could only wonder what they talked about.

But I was sure it would have a big effect on all of us.
