- [Bekah] I thought living on an island

was going to be a lot of fun.

I guess it would be if my school books

had washed out to sea.

This morning I have to learn how to multiply

and divide fractions.

Ewe, I can't remember which is the

numerator and I don't what that other part is called.

- [Jack] A!

- [Fritz] All right now what's this one?

- [Jack] Uh, B.

- [Fritz] Uh, huh.

- Now can you tell me what this letter is?

- [Jack] E.

- That's wrong, you better take a closer look at it.

- I am close.

- [Fritz] No no, this is an E and this is an F.

It looks like an E, only the bottom line is missing.

- Oh yeah.

- [Fritz] Do you think you can put all these

letters in alphabetical order for me?

- Mm hmm.

- Say each one out loud as you do it.

I'll be right back as soon as I see how Bekah's doing.

Let me take a look at your math.

- [Bekah] I don't think I quite understand

what I'm supposed to do Fritz.

- Well that's obvious,

you've got your numerators and denominators all mixed up.

The numerators are the numbers on top

and you just multiply them by each other Bekah.

- Fractions are so strange,

you have to multiply the bottom by the bottom

and the top by the top but that's what I did,

by luck anyway.

- Four of your answers are right

but you can't learn mathematics by guessing every time.

- But fractions are so boring.

They aren't fun.

- They're not for fun,

they're for the satisfaction of learning a skill

and it will always come in handy.

- It would handier making a boat to sail.

- Bekah, just do what I ask.

- A, B, C.

Don't take that letter, it's mine, hey I need that!

- [Fritz] Mercedes, Jack has to learn his alphabet.

I don't want you interfering.

Jack can play with you when his lessons are over.

- [Bekah] This is one of those times,

when I wish with all my heart

that I were Mercedes,

she's bound to find something fun to do.

Especially if Brewster is around.

They have their own special game.

Brewster pretends to be sleeping

but we can tell he's really awake

because his tail is wagging

and that busy tail is all the playground Mercedes needs.

(organ grinder music)

Mercedes is just a little thing.

She tuckers out fast and soon needs a long nap,

but her favorite cozy place to be

is wrapped in Brewster's safe warm paws

and Brewster enjoys the company too.

Meanwhile father's inspecting the canoe

that he and Fritz made.

- Hmm, now this canoe looks solid

and I'm certain it won"t ever splinter again.

Just to be safe, I'd better check it for leaks.

(grunts)

Yes it has a nice sturdy balance

and it doesn't leak.

- [Bekah] Shh don't make any loud noise,

you might wake them up.

- [Jack] They look funny together.

- They sure are a strange looking pair,

but they both look happy together.

- Just like father and child.

- Well I can see you're all studying hard.

- Mother you should've asked me,

I could have carried the water up.

- I should have, but I thought you were teaching

the children their lessons.

However you seem to have plenty of time on your hands.

- It's recess and it looks like you could

use a little recess yourself.

(laughs)

- [Jack] Mother come here quickly.

- [Mother] What dear?

- See Brewster is pretending to be Mercedes daddy.

- Oh my.

- Maybe Brewster adopted Mercedes.

- What's adopted?

- Cuddling a baby who's fur is very different from yours.

- [Jack] Am I adopted?

- No my darling, you are my very own little baby boy.

Come on, recess is over, let's get back to work.

- Mamma, cuddle me please.

- It looks to me like your just stalling for time,

so you don't have to do your lesson.

- [Jack] Please mamma.

Oh boy.

- [Jack] Hey you're in the way Bekah.

- Hey, I am not Jack.

- Now you two stop arguing.

- [Bekah] Hey let go of me!

- [Mother] Stop it children, I'm going to fall.

- [Bekah] It's all your fault! - [Jack] No!

- [Bekah] Look what you've done!

- What's going on Fritz?

- You missed all the fun.

- I had some work to do.

- You inspected the canoe?

- Yes, and it's perfect this time.

All set to go.

- Jack, Bekah, the canoes ready.

- [Jack] Yay! - [Bekah] That's great!

- I'm going canoeing!

- Fritz have you discovered any leaks?

- Everythings perfect father.

- [Father] Good, then bring it on back to shore now Fritz!

- [Bekah] Oh goody maybe I'll get to

take a ride in the canoe now.

It looks like so much fun.

- Is it really safe this time?

- There's nothing to worry about.

- Father may I please have a turn taking the canoe out?

- Father, I'll go too.

- Listen the canoe is important.

We need to be very careful with how much we use it.

Fritz and I spent many long hours

putting all the pieces together.

We built this boat for fishing.

It's not a toy to use by yourselves without supervision.

And when you do along with Fritz or me,

you must be willing to fish, understand?

- [Both children] Uh, huh.

- I trust the two of you to respect my wishes.

You both have my permission to go fishing.

- [both children] Hooray!

- One at a time, two is all it can handle.

Now Bekah your mother needs help with some work,

so I've decided that Jack can go first.

- I'm all set dad.

- What about me father?

- You can go on the next trip after you help your mother.

If not today, then first thing tomorrow morning.

I'll take you myself.

- I'll be ready.

- [Father] There you go.

- Thanks.

- [Father] Fritz stay inside the coral reef

and keep your eye open so the canoe doesn't drift.

The open sea can be treacherous.

- [Fritz] Yes sir.

- Be careful, be sure to keep an eye on your little brother.

Don't stay out too long.

- Don't worry mother, bye see you in a while.

- [Bekah] Bye. - [Father] Be careful.

- Wow.

- [Fritz] Feel that ocean breeze?

- [Jack] It's great.

- [Mother] Be a good boy Jack.

- [Jack] All right.

- I hope they catch us a tasty dinner.

- Bekah, how would you like to help me out

for a little while?

- What do you want me to do mother?

- A little sewing.

- But I can't help, I don't sew.

- I'll teach you to do it.

Sewing is a skill that's always passed down

from mother to daughter.

- Oh boy, I'd rather learn hunting or fishing.

Those are skills I could really use.

(father laughs)

- You'll learn those.

I'm going to go look for some arrow root.

- What's arrow root?

- I think it's a kind of tropical plant.

- Arrow root contains a lot of starch

and I'm curious to see what it tastes like.

- If it's any good, we'll have a whole new

food to try for supper.

- It maybe our only supper if the boys don't catch any fish.

- [Bekah] They'll probably fill up the whole canoe.

As Fritz and Jack paddled away,

I was dreaming of my own canoe trip

with father in the morning.

- When I was your age, my mother taught me to sew a ballroom

gown with beads all over. - [Bekah] Yes you told me

about that before, lots of times.

- Did I?

- Father might need our help picking the arrow root, mamma.

- I see what you're trying to do Rebekah, it won't work.

You're going to learn to sew.

- [Bekah] Couldn't we go swimming?

- No dear.

- [Bekah] Well I tried to change her mind,

but mother wouldn't budge.

Of course the boys were off having a great adventure.

I wish I were with them.

- Look Fritz you can see the bottom.

- [Fritz] I know.

- I see all kinds of fishes, we should stop and catch them.

- Don't be in such a hurry.

We're going to stop by those rocks,

that's where the best fish should be.

- [Bekah] I know where the big fish hide,

but a lot of good that's doing me now.

I remember this curtain, what are you going to make?

- [Mother] We are going to make a shirt.

- [Bekah] For father?

- If we have enough material,

otherwise we'll make one for Fritz,

who takes a smaller size.

- I don't have any shirts.

- You can have a shirt, but you must sew it all by yourself.

- [Bekah] I can't.

- Well not yet, be patient, I'm going to teach you.

And when it's all finished, it will look like it was made

by a professional tailor. - [Bekah] Wow.

That's unbelievable!

- [Mother] Let's get to work.

I wanted you to learn so many things,

but being her on this island has been so limiting.

- Well don't worry about it, I know lots of things

the children elsewhere will never learn.

- Like what?

- Like making a raft and shooting and canoeing tomorrow.

(laughs)

- What every lady should know.

(both laugh)

- There that should do it.

Be careful Jack, I'm going under and take a look.

- [Jack] All right.

Hey be careful, you'll fall in the water

and you can't swim Mercedes.

(light string music)

- [Bekah] While Fritz was swimming around under water

like a fish himself,

Jack and Mercedes were eagerly awaiting his return.

- Didn't you catch any fish?

- They were so beautiful,

I didn't have the heart to disturb any of them.

- You didn't catch some?

- Sorry I let you down.

I'll get some this time, I'm going to use the net.

Look I caught one Jack!

- Oh boy, let me see it Fritz!

- [Fritz] There you go.

- Mercedes don't be scared, it's just a big fish.

- We plan to have that fish for dinner

and our mothers going to cook it up.

(both gasp)

- No more dinner.

- Don't be upset, there are plenty more to catch.

- I bet Jack and Fritz are having a lot more fun than me

sitting here with this silly old cloth in my hand.

Ouch, I pricked my finger!

- That's because you were't concentrating on your work.

Keep an eye on your needle

because all your stitches must be perfectly matched.

- All right, I wonder how many fish Fritz

and Jack have caught by now.

- Hey come back here, where are you going?

Stay put don't be so jumpy.

No more please, stop!

- All right let's go find some shell fish.

But we'll have to move the boat

to a spot where the water's shallow.

- [Jack] Yeah then I can get in the water.

I can touch the bottom with no problem.

- Don't wander off, stay right here beside the boat.

I'll go look for shell fish and bring them back.

- All right.

- I won't be gone long, so just keep your eye on things

till I get back.

- Gee, baby fishes, I wonder if I could catch some.

Mercedes I caught a bunch of them.

We can put these with the other fish.

- Ouch! I pricked my same finger.

I need a sewing recess, now!

- Oh really?

- My back muscles are very tense from concentrating,

I should relax now.

- Hmm.

- You know what might work?

A nice long run will help me unwind, see you later!

- Hmm, hmm, hmm.

- Hooray, I finally escaped.

Sewing is such boring work.

Poor mother, she needs to get out and run like me.

I sure hope I can spot Jack and Fritz

with these binoculars.

(laughs)

- Here fish, come here little fishes,

come out where ever you are.

I'm going to catch you, you can't hide from me.

Missed you again.

(Mercedes squeaks)

- I don't see anybody yet Brewster.

Nope they're not over on this side either.

I better check out the southern section of the reef.

There I found the canoe and Jack.

He's playing, he looks like he's having fun.

He keeps splashing himself with water.

I guess he's trying to catch a fish

but he doesn't seem to be having much luck.

- Oh I've spotted Fritz,

he's carrying a bunch of big shells.

Tomorrow I hope to find lots shells

and with father helping me,

mine should be much bigger that Fritz's.

There's a floating bundle.

Oh it's Mercedes on the canoe paddle.

I'll bet Jack and Fritz don't know he's floating away.

We're going to have to try and get closer to the water

to get their attention so we can tell them what's going on.

(dog barks) - [Bekah] Come on boy!

(Mercedes squeaks)

- Come on now keep moving.

- Hurry up, mines going to win.

- You can take him!

Just a little faster! - [Jack] Come on, come on!

- [Fritz] That a boy! - [Jack] Go, go, go!

- [Fritz] Go, go! - [Jack] Go on!

- Can you hear me?

Mercedes is in trouble!

(dog barks)

Fritz, Jack can you hear me, please answer, please!

Brewster what are we going to do,

they can't hear me from this distance.

I don't know how to help.

Oh he looks so scared.

We've got to get to him before he drifts past the reef.

Maybe the wind will change.

Oh dear, I'm afraid he's headed in the direction

where the reef breaks up.

Brewster, come on let's go see

if we can find a way down there.

(dog barks)

We're coming Mercedes, we'll do the best we can,

nothings going to happen to you.

- [Fritz] Come on! - [Jack] Come on!

Go, go! - [Fritz] You're almost there!

Just a little bit farther. - [Jack] move your little

claws, come on! - [Fritz] Come on, come on!

- Faster.

Hooray, mine won, hooray I'm the champ!

- You beat me fair and square.

I think it's about time we started for home.

The ores gone. - [Jack] Huh?

- How strange, I wonder what happened to it.

- [Jack] I don't know.

- Where's Mercedes?

- Is Mercedes really gone?

But how could she get away?

- I bet she's on top of the ore.

- Mercedes where have you gone to?

- Mercedes!

- Mercedes!

- Look, I think I've spotted her.

Oh no, she's out beyond the reef.

- Oh please Fritz hurry, you just got to save her.

- I'll try Jack.

She's drifting in the open sea.

I don't know how long she can hang on.

- This section s even steeper than the other end.

Oh mercy, this is just impossible.

It's Fritz, he's coming to rescue Mercedes.

Come on Fritz, come on, hurry up, I know you can save her.

Fritz hurry up, please hurry!

(Mercedes squeaks)

- [Fritz] I'm coming Mercedes!

- Where's Fritz, if he doesn't hurry up, Mercedes is

going to be swept far away from the island.

- Come on Fritz, hurry now, you're getting close.

Come on Fritz, get up, you have to keep moving,

shake off the pain and run.

Come on and hurry up Fritz, come on, come on!

(dog barks)

He'd better hurry or he's not going to make it.

Fritz hurry, run with all your might!

Mercedes, Mercedes, oh my dear little Mercedes!

- Oh, where is she?

This is as far as I'm able to go.

Mercedes!

- [Bekah] Mercedes, Mercedes!

(dog barks)

He's such a brave little fella.

Oh Brewster, I'm going to miss him so much.

(dog whimpers)

Brewster!

Brewster be careful!

(dog whimpers)

He's made it, he's alright!

Swim Brewster, come on.

Fritz, Brewster's gone to get Mercedes.

- I see him now.

Get her boy, get going!

- Keep going, just concentrate.

(mercedes squeaks)

- Oh Brewster, you've done it!

- Oh Brewster, you really did it boy!

Swim over here boy, let me help you up.

- [Bekah] Brewster is the most wonderful dog

in the whole wide world.

If he can concentrate to swim the ocean currents

and never complain, then I will learn to concentrate too,

to do sewing and my fractions.

- Thank goodness you're safe.

You're lucky to have a buddy like Brewster

and so am I.

- [Bekah] We're all together again and everybody is safe.

Sometimes all the words you want to say just won't come out.

I guess because so many happy feelings are rushing in.
