Many moons ago,
there were millions of us.

Back then, the plains were
overwhelmed by bison and deer.

Every Indian had his happy
home in the flourishing forest,

under the clear-cut mountaintops,

and along the rivers.

We had teepees,

winter and summer clothing,

we had blankets.

And if our children asked for food,

we never had to tell them no.

The land was rich,
it gave us lots to eat

and forest fruits and berries
grew in great abundance.

If the earth murmured softly,
like a swift heartbeat

we prepared,
for the bison were coming.

The herds came running,
calves, bulls and cows.

Food for our children had arrived.

We lived,
and lived contently.

Those times have passed.

But the mountains towering
over roads have remained,

so have the beautiful vallies
of large hills.
