-Welcome to "The Last Drive-In"
special Fear Fest edition,

and we are going back to 1978

when an unknown director named
John Carpenter

and an unknown actress named
Jamie Lee Curtis

made a movie called "Halloween"

that they planned to release
onHalloween.

How generic. How boring, right?

When was the first time you saw
"Halloween," Darcy?

Or should I say Laurie Strode?

That is some good cosplay
you got there.

When did you first see it?

-Um, I never actually watched it

until the characters in "Scream"
kept talking about it.

-Oh, so late '90s.

Alright. Darcy the Mail Girl,
ladies and gentlemen!

-[Cheers and applause]
-Here as usual to field

Facebook posts, your e-mails.

As soon as the movie starts,
Darcy just goes insane

on the social media until
Twitter puts her

in Twitter Jail, then we have to
get her out.

Or I guess it's Musk Jail now,
right?

-I was gonna say, yeah.

-But they always think
she's a bot.

That's how fast she is.

A lot of claims are made for
"Halloween."

Usually that it was the first
this or the first that.

And it was not really
the first anything.

For example, people say

Jamie Lee Curtis was
the first final girl.

She wasn't the first, second,
third, or fourth final girl.

She was just the best.

But the more famous one at
the time was Marilyn Burns

in
"The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,"

a movie that came out
four years earlier.

It's said that this was
the first horror film

to make huge box office --

$40 million domestic,
$70 million worldwide.

But once again,
"The Texas Chain Saw Massacre"

had made more money.

It's also sometimes stated that

this was John Carpenter's
first movie.

It was actually his third movie.

He made "Dark Star"
as his student film

at the University
of Southern California.

That was a sci-fi comedy

that had Dan O'Bannon
in an acting role.

And then he made
"Assault on Precinct 13,"

an extremely low-budget
gangs-versus-cops flick

two years before "Halloween."

Um, he got the "Halloween" job
because a producer

named Irwin Yablans
had a new company

called Compass
International Pictures,

and he had made a small profit
with "Assault on Precinct 13,"

and so he wanted to work
with Carpenter again,

and he told him he wanted
a horror film,

and he wanted the film to be
called "The Babysitter Murders."

And a 45-year-old franchise
was launched.

Alright, that's all I'm gonna
say about it right now.

I'll give you some more
background at next first break,

but let's look at those
drive-in totals

and kick off this
Fear Fest special edition.

-And the book ends.

But what Samuels is really
talking about here is fate.

You see, fate caught up
with several lives here.

No matter what course of action
Collins took,

he was destined to his own fate,

his own day of reckoning
with himself.

The idea is that destiny

is a very real,
concrete thing

that every person
has to deal with.

How does Samuels' view of fate
differ from that of Costaine's?

Laurie?

-Ma'am?
-Answer the question.

-Oh, um,
Costaine wrote that fate

was somehow related
only to religion,

whereas Samuels felt that,

well, fate was like
a natural element,

like earth, air, fire,
and water.

-That's right. Samuels
definitely personified fate.

In Samuels' writing,
fate is immovable,

like a mountain.

It stands where man passes away.

Fate never changes.

[School bell rings,
kids speaking indistinctly]

-Yeah.

He is coming to Haddonfield.

[Train horn blaring]

-You know, I want to clear
one thing up here.

You know that long tracking shot
at the start of the movie,

the very first thing you see,
you know,

the point of view of
the young boy Michael

executing his first murder?

It looks like it's
one continuous take.

And it's long.

And a lot of film critics
have said

that it's one continuous take,
but it's not.

It switches when they get close
to the bushes

and they go from the outdoors
to the indoors,

and then -- and also when he --

when the mask goes on,
it switches.

But anyway, my point is

it's frequently compared
to the killer

point of view
that opens "Black Christmas."

And I know we have a lot of
"Black Christmas" fans.

-Whoo!
-And "Black Christmas" was made

four years before this movie,

so people say,
"Well, John Carpenter got all

his ideas from
'Black Christmas,'" you know,

and Canadians are especially
quick to say this

'cause "Black Christmas"
is Canadian.

But not really
because, first of all,

the purpose of the killer
point-of-view tracking shot

in "Black Christmas"
was to disguise

the identity of the killer.

But as soon as this tracking
shot finishes,

the camera turns around
and it reveals young Michael

with that bloody knife
in his hand.

So two opposite rationales.

Plus this point-of-view camera
walks right past

the boyfriend,
indicating that Michael didn't

really have to sneak
into the house at all --

it's his house, right?

He knows where he's going.

But anyway, when you're making
a movie about a hands-on killer,

the point-of-view camera
is always spooky --

and that's the only thing
the two movies

have in common, though.

And running that point-of-view
camera was none other than

Dean Cundey, who would go on
to be one of Hollywood's

most in-demand cinematographers

but at the time was known
only for ultra-low-budget stuff

like "Ilsa, Harem Keeper
of the Oil Sheiks" --

which I recommend, by the way --
that's a good movie --

and "Satan's Cheerleaders"

and a couple of
the more interesting

black exploitation movies.

I think the reason "Halloween"
became more popular

than other horror movies

is that it had that
Hollywood shine

'cause most horror movies
of the era

were made by independents,
so they had that

grainy shaky-cam quality,
and it scared people.

And you may think, "Well, that's
good, they're horror movies,

they shouldscare people,"
but they scared people

in such a way that people
out in the suburbs

were afraid to go into the
grindhouse theaters to see them.

Or in the South, go to
the drive-ins to see them.

The two most famous indie
horror films

prior to "Halloween" were
"Night of the Living Dead,"

made by unknowns in Pittsburgh,

and
"The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,"

made by unknowns in Austin.

Definitely outside the system,

fighting for every
that ticket they sold.

"Halloween," on the other hand,

was booked into your
neighborhood multiplex.

It premiered in Kansas City!

How white bread can you get?
-[Laughter]

And so it promised an evening
of controlled terror.

You could be sure that,
while it was about a maniac,

it was not made by a maniac.

-[Laughter]
-Um, alright.

Back to the flick.

Roll it.

Remember the first time
we showed this movie?

And we asked people to send in

their theories of what
Michael Myers' motivation is?

Why he kills?
-Yes.

And some of the explanations
were crazier

than Dr. Loomis'.

-Most of them just said "he
kills because he's pure evil."

-That's what I think.

-Darcy, that's a copout.

-It's more fun that way.

-Serial killers are more fun if
they have no reason for killing?

-Oh, absolutely. Much scarier.

-Do they teach that
in film school or...?

-They teach that
in box office school.

-[Laughter]
-Okay.

and you know what happens when
anybody in a horror flick

To this day,
Jamie Lee Curtis says,

"I do not like horror movies."

Even though
she just finished doing

that whole post-traumatic stress
syndrome feminist sequel

trilogy thing to replace all
the other 10 sequels,

plus she was in two or three of
the previous sequels, you know?

Um, John Carpenter always
says he wanted her for the movie

because her mom did "Psycho,"
and he was a fan of "Psycho."

But Debra Hill, who was dating
John Carpenter at the time,

says Jamie Lee Curtis was not
his first choice,

that the girl he really wanted

was the daughter --

she says the daughter of
the woman in "Lassie."

[Laughter]

And so that was the whole
description of the actress.

He wanted that daughter of
the woman in "Lassie."

So the woman in "Lassie" was
June Lockhart,

and she does have -- she has two
daughters, but the only one

who's an actress
is Anne Lockhart,

but I cannot for
the life of me tell you

anything Anne Lockhart
has been in, so, uh...

and I wrote this down somewhere.

Where is it?

Here's what Laurie Strode
says in that scene.

"Costaine wrote that fate

whereas Samuels felt that fate

Now, this is a horror flick,

She's talking about fate.

I don't know who the hell

Remember that guy -- speaking of

He has the blackest eyes.

Donald Pleasence isthe star of
the movie, by the way.

His name is billed
above the title.

He's before even
John Carpenter's name.

Donald Pleasence had already
been in dozens of films

by this time, almost always
playing an evil killer.

Um, most famously, he was
head of the Nazi SS

in "The Eagle Has Landed."

And he was overqualified for
that role because his RAF plane

had been shot down over France
in World War II,

and he was actually tortured
in a German POW camp.

But he was mainly a theater guy,
um...

His most famous role,

and the role
he was most proud of,

was the scheming tramp in
"The Caretaker,"

a Harold Pinter play that
debuted in London in 1960

and it then moved on to
Broadway

and he was acclaimed and honored
and praised.

So Pleasence was not
a horror guy.

How many people do you think
in the Fear Fest audience

have seen a Harold Pinter play?

-[Laughter]
-You know, it's like --

it's all subtext.

And it's not just subtext,
it's British subtext.

You know, so three people maybe
have seen a Harold --

-Maybe.

-Wrong audience for
Harold Pinter plays.

John Carpenter wanted either
Peter Cushing

or Christopher Lee
to play Dr. Loomis,

but they both turned it down
because the money was so low.

And John Carpenter admitted to
being intimidated

by Donald Pleasence because he
was this high-toned theater guy,

but, um, Pleasence was trying
to support his wife

and six daughters...
-Dang.

-...and so he had to work
all the time,

so he took the part

and actually contributed a few
things to the script

that were not in there before
involving his character.

Um, he insisted that
there should be

no sympathy for Michael Myers

and no backstory for Michael
Myers other than that

he was unrepentant
and unreachable.

Uh, he was pure evil.

[Laughter]

And in fact, I think the reason

that some of the "Halloween"
sequels failed

is that there was too much
Michael Myers backstory

and attempts to explain
his motivation.

So Donald Pleasence
agrees with you, Darcy.

if you give reasons for his
violence, he is much less scary.

But get this -- Donald Pleasence
also thought

that Dr. Loomisshould have
no backstory.

He wanted all Dr. Loomis
backstory eliminated.

There was a scene where he calls
his wife,

and Donald Pleasence said
that scene has to come out.

He has no wife.

'Cause Loomis had to be
so single-minded,

he had no family, no ties,

no purpose other than
stopping Michael Myers.

He wanted him to be
just as crazy as Michael.

Haddonfield High,

the only thing the kids ever
think about is weed and sex.

-Well, there's Michael Myers,
who might just be stalking

people impaired by weed and sex.

Supposedly this movie takes
place in the most typical

of all-American towns,
Haddonfield.

Um, Carpenter put the script
together with his girlfriend,

Debra Hill, and -- who would
eventually become

one of Hollywood's
most powerful female producers,

and Debra had grown up in
Haddonfield, New Jersey.

And Haddonfield, um...

If you're in downtown Camden --

and you probably don't want to
be in downtown Camden --

but if you're in downtown Camden
and you just drive

straight east until the houses
start to become nice

and there aren't any more
abandoned cars on the street,

that's Haddonfield.

Now, people in Haddonfield,
to this day,

claim "Halloween"
was made there,

even though it clearly states
that the town in the movie

is Haddonfield, Illinois,
which is not even a real place.

And the actual filming locations
were not in Illinois either.

They were in South Pasadena,
California,

the town that has been
used for 100 years

in 100 movies to represent
small-town Midwestern America.

And while we're on that subject,
the street names

in "Halloween" are actually
the streets

in Bowling Green, Kentucky,

which is where
John Carpenter grew up.

So Haddonfield is
a combination of New Jersey,

Illinois, Kentucky,
and California.

At any rate, the only reason
the movie exists at all

is Irwin Yablans

wanted a horror flick titled
"The Babysitter Murders"

'cause there were
a lot of urban legends

about boogeymen that prey on
babysitters.

And so he gave Carpenter
and Hill $325,000

and told them
there had to be babysitters

and the babysitters had to die.

[Chuckles] Otherwise, they could
do whatever they wanted.

this movie.

the movie,

but he didn't pay

when she's stuck in the window.

She keeps notgetting
killed by Michael Myers.

And that performance
was Nancy Loomis.

She made five movies,
all for John Carpenter,

before she moved on to her real
career as a sculptor in L.A.

Um, and now that we're talking
about the cast,

Lindsey, that 8-year-old girl

being considered
for a threesome,

she would grow up to be on

"The Real Housewives
of Beverly Hills."

Um, that's Kyle Richards.

Um, Michael Myers is listed in
the credits as Tony Moran,

but he was actually portrayed by
five different people.

Whoever was available
to slap on the mask

or show a part of his body in
any particular scene.

The reason they list Tony Moran
is that is him

in that brief shot
where Michael is unmasked.

Um, otherwise, Michael's always
wearing that cheap mask

that they threw together.

That is actually a mask
from "The Devil's Rain,"

made for an eyeless
William Shatner,

and it was later turned into
a Captain Kirk mask

so it has the sideburns
and eyebrows ripped off of it

and the face painted white
and the hair painted brown

and the eyes made much wider,

but total cost of
mask effects -- $2.

Maybe that's why
there are so many

Michael Myers cosplayers
today -- minimal investment.

But now that Michael is aroused,

-So, Debra Hill, the producer,

gave quite a few interviews
about "Halloween"

before her untimely death
in 2005,

and one thing she would always
say is that Laurie Strode,

the Jamie Lee Curtis character,
is an extremely strong woman.

She would say,
"She feared nothing."

-Yeah.
-Well, I disagree.

Laurie has a healthy fear
of almost everything.

She is very protective of those
kids partly because

she's aware of all the things
that might be scary

that the other cast members
are ignoring.

Debra Hill also said the film
had no nudity.

I have to wonder
whether she actually

ever watched the film.

There's a famous commentary
track where she says,

"The nudity at the very
beginning, in the first scene,

is the only nudity in the film,"
and she says Judith Myers' death

at the beginning is the only
real violence in the film.

I mean, it's not about nudity,
it's not about violence.

She kept saying that. She kept
hammering those two points home.

It's about Laurie Strode
being strong.

Well, it's an extremely strong
performance by Jamie Lee Curtis,

there's no question about that.
It's an amazing performance

for such a young and, at that
time, inexperienced actress,

but it's rooted in fear.

She makes her fear real to us
so that we identify with her.

Her feeling of helplessness.

Otherwise, we would
think she's stupid.

[Laughter]

I mean, well, I don't want
to do spoilers,

but she does some silly things,
you know, because of her fear.

-Fair, fair.

-Debra Hill always said,
"Laurie Strode feared nothing."

Really?
She had to fear something.

She had to fear Michael Myers,

or wewouldn't fear
Michael Myers.

'Cause we're only seeing
Michael Myers through her eyes,

at least in the major
climactic scenes.

It's one thing
to hear Dr. Loomis

talk about what a badass he is,
but when we finally see him,

we're watching him through
the eyes of Laurie Strode.

Just my opinion,
but I bring it up

because it's what the movie
makes great --

Jamie Lee Curtis getting that
fear across to the audience.

She feared everything!

So let's watch her work.

Roll it.

-Okay, we just launched one of
the most intense

20-minute sequences in
all of horror history,

so I don't want to hold it here
for very long,

but you have to wonder what kind
of law enforcement

they have in Haddonfield.

They are just now finding
Michael Myers' car

that he stole?

I mean, wouldn't that be
the first thing you do,

put out an A.P.B. on the car?

And it's right there
in plain sight?

I mean, the thing that makes
"Halloween" scary --

and I'm not the first one
to say this --

it's the music, obviously,
the theme.

I'm not sure it would have been
a hit without that music.

John Carpenter's dad
was a music professor

at Bowling Green State
University,

so Carpenter picked up
enough from him

to be able to compose,
on a synthesizer,

and he did that piano theme,
which is not that original.

I think Carpenter himself even
admits that he got

the inspiration from "Tubular
Bells" in "The Exorcist,"

maybe a little stuff
also from "Suspiria" as well.

-Totally.
-The stuff written by Goblin.

'Cause "Suspiria" came out
one year before "Halloween."

But the music gives
the film an energy

when Michael is just
lurking and stalking

and not really doing anything.

You still got that music,
but he's no longer stalking.

He's cracking bones,
so let's go.

And then once Jamie Lee Curtis
became a star,

she decided to go fancy.

She did those big-budget
comedies, you know,

like "Trading Places"
and "A Fish Called Wanda."

-Yeah, I am just glad that she
made "Prom Night"

because it made "Hello Mary Lou:
Prom Night II" possible.

-So true. That's true.
-[Laughs]

-But I mean, weird career,
though, all over the lot.

She kinda said she never wanted
to go back to Laurie Strode.

And then what's she doing
40 years later?

You know, she probably gets
Laurie Strode mail.

She probably has a Laurie Strode
tattoo by this point.

you know?

the child actress who played
Lindsey in the movie,

Kyle Richards, she says at the
time that she made the movie,

she didn't really understand
horror movies, so when she went

to the premiere of "Halloween,"
she got freaked out so much

she had to sleep in her mom's
bed until the age of 15.

-Wow.
-Whoa!

What else can I tell you
before we head toward

the stunning conclusion to
the original "Halloween"?

The film made either $40 million
or $70 million --

I've heard both numbers --
on a budget of $325,000.

And, of course,
there have been 12 more

"Halloween" movies since then.

They weren't real picky about
who made "Halloween" sequels.

I think they just had
a rate card, you know?

Want to do a "Halloween"?

You know, that'll be a half
million dollars.

Um, there have been
at least seven Michael Myerses,

mostly Nick Castle,
in this movie.

He invented the head tilt.

You know, the head tilt that,
uh...

Yeah, exactly.

Um, he had played in a band with
John Carpenter in college.

That's how he got that job.

Um, Dick Warlock,
the stunt coordinator,

was Michael Myers in Part 2.

in "Halloween" 2018.

Tyler Mane in the ones
nobody can remember.

Anyway, we're getting to the

the part that made all those
sequels and remakes

and reboots possible,
so let's just roll the film.

John Carpenter got paid $10,000
for directing the movie.

But he also got 10% of
the profits of the movie.

-Ooh.
-Can you do the math on that?

-Well, it's enough money just
stay home, playing video games,

and smoking weed all day.

-Which is pretty much what he
does, right?

-Yeah.
