[whinnying]

[horse chuffs]

[theme music playing]

? I'm gonna ride ?

? I'm riding free ?

? So come along, let's go along ?

? Come on this journey with me ?

? I'm gonna ride ?

? I'm riding free ?

? As long as I am here with you ?

? I feel the spirit within me ?

- ? Yeah, eh, eh ? - ? Yeah, eh, eh, eh ?

- ? Yeah, eh, eh ? - ? Yeah, eh, eh, eh ?

? Yeah, eh, eh ?

? Yeah, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh ?

[chuffs]

- Morning. - Morning.

Whatcha doing there, Lucky?

Having breakfast.

Do you, um, want to talk about it?

Talk about what?

Ooh, how incredible it is

that you're having ice cream for breakfast.

I got to do that once,

but first I had to have my tonsils out.

[sighs] Do you want to talk about your aunt moving into the inn?

Oh, yeah. We're real sorry.

What, that? It's fine.

I mean, I'm gonna miss her and all,

but I won't miss her constantly looking over my shoulder

and always telling me what to do.

- [Cora] Lucky, be careful! - [exclaims]

[Cora] Oh, heavens!

Are you all right?

I'm fine. What are you doing here?

Oh, out for a stroll.

I confess, I don't know what to do with my mornings now.

Ah, I see you're having ice cream. For breakfast.

In the square. For all to see.

Well, we better get to school.

Of course. You don't want to be late.

Lucky, you know, even though I'm staying at the inn,

I'm here if you need me.

Oh, sure, thanks. Bye.

- [Pru] Lucky, wait. - [Abigail] Hang on!

[sighs]

Typical Aunt Cora. Can you believe her?

- No? - Yes?

"You don't want to be late, Lucky. Brush your hair, Lucky.

Don't forget your homework, Lucky."

Hey, where is your homework?

[gasps]

[Spirit whinnies]

[Lucky] I'll meet you at school! Bye!

- [chuffs] - [door opening inside]

[Lucky] Homework, where are you?

[grunts]

- Come on, it was right here! - [clattering]

- [grunts] - [glass shatters]

Spirit, have you seen my homework?

[chuffs]

[gasps] Oh, I know!

- Got it! - [chuffs]

Thanks, boy.

I'm here. I'm here! I'm on time.

[panting]

- Where's Miss Flores? - Never fear.

I will stand in for Miss Flores during her unexpected absence,

however long it may be.

Maybe she went to get more books.

[class laughing]

Why, this isn't a book.

It's a play!

The Whispering Vaquero!

[class cheering]

What's The Whispering Vaquero?

Oh, it's a marvelous story

about a beautiful, misunderstood young woman named Nora

who is tormented by her small-minded town.

Maricela, Nora's the villain.

She helps the bandit and causes the stampede.

Although the stampede is the reason Mae and the vaquero meet and fall in love.

See? Genius is never recognized in its own time.

Forget that girl stuff.

All you need to know is there's a twister and a moose

and then another twister.

[Miss Flores] Yee-haw!

[whip cracks]

Howdy, cowpokes!

Y'all better fetch your frontier finery, 'cause...

Is it true?

We're performing The Whispering Vaquero?

Um, yes.

I was just about to announce that.

Kind of the whole point of my grand entrance.

Do you want to try it again?

[sighs] The moment's lost.

- [Snips] Waffles! - [chattering]

[Maricela] Splendiferous!

None of this makes any sense!

[Pru] Sure it does.

It's a classic fish out of water story

about a big city girl who comes to the frontier

and is lost until she makes a pack of true-blue friends

and finds her soul mate in a mysterious vaquero.

A traveling theater troupe came to Miradero and performed it.

It was magical.

There was romance! And tragedy!

And cotton candy!

It's the best play I've ever seen.

I mean, it's the only play I've ever seen, but still.

Topping that night is gonna be tough. [chuckles]

Miss Flores has her work cut out for her.

Harken! What is that yonder?

[slowly] Har-ken, what is that yonder?

Harken, what is that... yonder?

[panting]

[barks]

[howls]

Are you okay, Snips?

[whispering] Can't talk. I'm the dog.

[barks]

Dog? What dog?

Mae's dog Waffles.

She tells him all her secret-est hopes and dreams

and feeds him treats aplenty.

Oh, the dog isn't really a role.

It's usually just a stuffed animal.

What kind of two-bit production is this?

The dog's the best part!

[sighs]

You'll see! You'll all see!

I'll quit this no-account town,

and I'll never look back again!

And scene.

Oh, Maricela, that was just wonderful!

Now, I'd like you to read for the part of Mae.

[scoffs] Mae? No, thank you.

[Miss Flores] Oh, but Mae is the lead.

She only has 36 lines.

Nora has 44. And two songs.

[sighs]

See here, you...

I can't say this word.

- Scallywag? - [gasps]

Miss Flores!

No, it's a perfectly good word for a bad person.

Uh, I don't think I should say it.

And it says here I'm supposed to rob Mae.

That's definitely wrong.

[sighs]

And what are you thinking for lights?

A spotlight? Or torches?

Oh, uh, whew, just the sun, I guess.

I hadn't really thought about it.

Are you going to audition?

Depends. What are you planning for costumes?

Oh, and the stage?

The play's set on the frontier, but it's not really the frontier.

It's the promise of the frontier, so...

Pru, you clearly have a vision,

so I have an idea.

Why don't you be the director?

Who, me? I couldn't.

But okay! Two things. What kind of budget do I have?

And how married are you to using students as actors?

Uh, none and completely.

I'll make it work.

Who's next?

Okay, Lucky, why don't you start on page 12?

Sure.

Ah, behold a new day!

I can't remember ever seein' one so fine.

And yet my insides are all atwixt.

Is this even the same frontier?

Surely it looks different today.

Huh. Totally cold.

But why?

There's wood burning. It doesn't make any sense.

Dad? What are you doing?

- [loud clang] - [Jim] Ow!

Oh, making dinner.

My famous stew.

Do you know how to light the stove?

That's Aunt Cora's department.

I guess we'll just have to think of something else.

Huh?

[muffled speech]

It's a crankshaft. I'm tinkering around a bit.

I've got some ideas to make the trains more efficient.

Cora never liked me bringing this stuff in the house,

but I figured since she's not here...

You know what else we can do without her here?

Eh?

Heh?

I don't know what Aunt Cora's talking about.

It's just more stable with your elbows on the table.

Huh.

[sighs]

So I was thinking about going on a moonlight ride with Spirit,

if that's all right?

Sure. But don't stay out too late.

I expect you home by the time I get back from my moonlight walk with Miss Flores.

Ew, but okay!

[sighs]

You know, Spirit, I think the air is fresher at night.

[inhales deeply]

Aunt Cora thinks she knows what's best, but look at us.

We're doing just fine!

[neighs]

[whinnies]

[groans]

[gasps]

Oh, no! I'm gonna be late!

[Jim] Oh, no!

[both grunt]

[both] Why didn't you wake me up?

[clattering]

Have you seen my schoolbook?

Have you seen my vest?

[Lucky] Why isn't anything where it's supposed to be?

This isn't my book!

It's breakfast.

Scrape off the burnt bits.

- [school bell tolls] - [gasps]

Okay, yesterday was kind of a disaster.

But today's a new day!

And to tell you who's playing which part,

please welcome our director Pru!

- Here we go, people. - [grunts]

Lucky, you'll be my star.

But I was born to be Nora!

You're just playing favorites!

[Pru sighs] Don't worry.

Everybody knows that you're Nora. [chuckles]

The villain.

Lucky will be Mae.

[sighs] Pru, you had me worried there for a minute.

[Pru] Abigail, you'll be Lucky's understudy.

[gasps] Yay!

What's an understudy?

You learn the same lines and do all the same stuff Lucky does.

If she can't perform, you step in for her.

So I just follow Lucky around?

Like I'm her shadow?

Huh. Shadow Abigail.

I'm Shabigail!

[Pru] Turo, you're the bandit.

What if instead of a bandit,

he's just a real nice guy who's trying to turn his life around?

Then the play would make no sense!

Turo, I know there's a terrible bandit inside you!

We're gonna set him loose.

You're all gonna become your characters.

I want to see realism on that stage.

[all cheering]

Why would they call beans "whistle berries"?

Oh.

- [chuffs] - [giggles]

[hoofbeats departing]

[groans]

[groans]

Abigail? Where did you come from?

I've been shadowing you all day.

It's my job.

I'm Shabigail.

Oh, hello.

Good book?

It's a play, actually. I'm the lead.

It's a pretty big deal.

The whole town is coming.

Oh, congratulations!

You know, I trod the boards myself a time or two when I was younger.

Remember, you need to project.

Ooh, I told you those elocution lessons would pay off one day.

Oh, and you'll need help learning your lines.

- Oh, and I can sew your... - Don't worry, I've got that all handled.

I'll be great.

Of course you will.

Well, I'll let you get back to it, then.

Save me a seat in the front row!

[grumbles]

[grumbles]

[Pru] So Mae gets off the train,

and then the tornado roars through town

and carries away our dreaded bandit.

Enter Nora and her song of love and remorse.

? Oh, I done had it ?

? With that rootin'-tootin' bandit ?

Applause, applause.

I assure you, there will be more applause than that.

And from stage left strides in our captivating heroine Mae.

Uh, "his sweet whisperin'

shalt not reach mine ears

till the sun lays to rest o'er yonder buttes."

Cue the stampede and then at last,

all hearts go aflutter as Mae runs off with her handsome vaquero!

Whoo-hoo! Yeah!

- Whoo! - [boy] All right!

This is gonna be the best production Miradero has ever seen!

[cheers and applause]

Did you bring your costume?

Oh, it's all wrinkled and...

[sniffs] Ooh.

You sure this came from the clean clothes pile?

I'm going to wash it.

Maybe you could ask your aunt to do it?

You've got so much to do,

what with learning your lines and everything.

And she did say she was around if you need her.

Don't worry. I'll handle it!

"I better get a wiggle on,

or'n I'll be late for the huskin' bee."

How am I ever supposed to learn these lines?

I suppose running lines is something your aunt would've done with you, huh?

I guess.

In between curtsy practices.

Well, I'll help you. Let's take it from "get a wiggle on."

- All right. "I better get a..." - [steam hissing]

Oh, wait! It's working!

- [steam whistling] - [sparks crackling]

- [explosion] - [both yelp]

[both coughing]

I may have a few kinks to work out.

? His charmin' was disarmin' ?

? Not at all alarmin' ?

? He wooed me With that flannel-mouth talk... ?

Hi, Miss Flores! Sorry I'm late!

Are you okay?

I mean, is everything okay?

Sure! Fine! Why wouldn't it be?

With your aunt gone,

maybe things at home are a little disorganized.

So if you need help...

Sorry, that's my cue! I think.

- [exclaims] - Oh!

[barks]

[snores]

- Jim? - Ah! Oh, no, I'm late!

[gasps]

Kate, hello!

What a nice surprise. Is something wrong?

No.

Well, actually, yes.

I'm worried about Lucky.

And you.

Since Cora moved out, you two are falling apart.

What? No, we're doing fine.

[gasps, grunts]

- [wheels squeal] - [steam hisses]

[exhales]

Okay, maybe not completely fine.

I'm sorry,

but someone had to say it.

Well, I'm glad it was you, Kate.

[door opens, closes]

- Lucky! There you are. - Hi, Dad. Can't chat now.

I'm just gonna grab a quick snack.

Then Spirit and I are going on an even quicker ride.

Then I'm really sitting down and learning my lines.

Okay, I better get a wiggle on.

Hey, did you hear that?

- [clears throat] - What?

There'll be no riding or anything else until we clean up this house.

And ourselves.

We should just move. Start fresh.

It'd take an army to clean this place up.

[glass shatters]

Or maybe just the cavalry.

[whinnies]

It's working! Good job, Spirit!

The clothes will be dry in no time!

Ha! Told you we didn't need Aunt Cora.

Your aunt does a lot more for us than just keep house.

I know. I know.

Okay, I'm going to take Spirit on that ride now.

Don't be gone too long. You still have lines to learn.

I'll do it the minute I get back.

[thunder booming]

- Wow! Did you see that, Spirit? - [chuffs]

It's so amazing that you can watch a storm happening somewhere else,

and it doesn't even touch you in any way.

[chuffs]

[yawns]

[sighs]

[yawning] "Oh, Waffles, I'm more like to catch a weasel a-nappin'

than to know what's in that bonny buckaroo's head."

What does that even mean?

[snoring]

[thunder booming]

[birds chirping]

Rise and shine, sleepyhead.

[groans]

Come on, up and at 'em. Big day today!

I'm sorry I can't get away from work, but you'll do great.

I need you to tell me you're awake now.

Fine. I'm up.

[groans]

[snores]

[Spirit whinnies]

Hang on, Spirit!

[exclaims]

[gasps] Oh, no, Spirit! I slept in!

Costume, need costume.

It's wet!

Quick, Spirit, help me!

[neighs]

Faster, boy. We need it to dry!

[whinnies]

Whoo-hoo! Yeah!

[gasps] No!

[chuffs, whinnies]

[sighs]

Curtain's up in one minute.

Pru, Lucky's not here yet.

Surely we can wait a few more minutes.

These people came for a show,

and I'm gonna give them one.

Abigail, we need you!

Wait, where's Abigail?

[sighs] No Lucky and no Abigail?

Well, looks like there's no way we can start now.

She said start now!

[playing upbeat tune]

What? No!

Ladies and gentlemen,

we welcome you to our performance of The Whispering Vaquero!

Maricela! Don't go out there yet!

I've never missed a cue in my life,

and I don't intend to now.

Wait, wait, wait! We don't...

? I was alone on the plains ?

? Only the bison knew my pain ?

? The tumbleweeds roll by ?

? And every day I'd sigh ?

Slower, boy, I can't bounce and read.

[grunts]

? He's a hornswoggler, a dream-monger ?

- ? And when you're of no use ? - [sighs]

- ? He'll vamoose ? - Lucky, where's your costume?

Ugh, it doesn't matter. This is your cue! Go!

- [crickets chirping] - [audience murmuring]

[man coughs]

Behold a new...

[Snips barks]

...dog.

Uh, day, I mean day.

Behold a new day.

[woman coughs]

Ugh.

I've never seen one so...

[barks] Fine!

[laughing]

[Lucky] ...fine.

[laughing]

Oh, Waffles, what would I do without you?

- [barks] - [audience laughing]

[barks]

Is that any way to talk to a lady?

- [barks] - [laughing]

Give me your money, thank you!

[sighs] I can't handle this!

Turo, you're my last hope.

You've got to pull this off. Say it like you mean it! Now!

Give me all your money!

[chuffs, neighing]

[Pru] Whoa, girl! Not yet!

[Snips barks]

Boy, Waffles, you talk more than that vaquero.

What? Ahh!

- [laughing] - Whoa!

[gasps]

[whispers] Help me!

- Your moment has come, Shabigail. - Got it!

[Pru] No! Not that way!

- [groans] Oh, Abigail! - No, no, no, no, no, no!

No, no, no, no, no!

[both scream]

[groaning]

[laughing]

[Snips howling]

[gasps]

Seor Carrots, no!

[laughing]

Well, if everyone's just going to get onstage.

? And he's the man for ?

? Me ?

- [cheering] - Thank you!

Thank you, everyone.

[chuffs]

[chuffs]

What are we doing here? Let's go.

[whinnies]

Spirit, the inn's the last place I want to be.

I can't face Aunt Cora right now.

She saw what a fool I made of myself.

[chuffs]

[grunts]

- [neighs] - Fine.

[sighs]

[sighs]

[sighs]

Uh, Lucky?

I messed up, Aunt Cora.

The play wasn't that bad.

I'm not talking about that.

I'm talking about you.

I'm sorry about everything.

Life has been miserable without you. All my clothes are dirty.

I don't think Dad's ever used a stove.

And there was nobody to force me to learn my lines,

and you saw how that turned out.

I need you, Aunt Cora.

Please come home.

I appreciate your apology, Lucky.

But what you're describing... Anyone could do those things.

I did come to Miradero for you,

but not to be your housekeeper.

I came to...

Well, I'm really not sure anymore, but I know it isn't that.

I love you, Lucky, but...

I'm not moving back in.

[door closes]

[chuffs]

Come on, Spirit. We're on a mission.

We've got to convince Aunt Cora to come back home.

[Spirit whinnies]

[Pru] The play is over, Shabigail.

[Abigail] Aww.
