Narrator: Parker schnabel is chasing a 6,000-ounce,

$7.2-million season goal,

but after two months, he has just over 500 ounces.

We're just getting our ass kicked.

We've got a massive payroll bill,

and our fuel bill is touching on $300,000 a month.

Narrator: Because of Parker's failed attempt

to mine the cluster cut,

sluicifer is sitting idle, waiting for pay dirt.

-Hey, Willie. -Yeah, buddy.

Parker: I wanted to talk to you about a game plan here.

We've got big red going,

and we've got to get that pad built for sluicifer.

It's a bit difficult, but I figure

that it should take three days.

I've got you another driver.

He says he's got a bunch of experience,

and we just got to get this [Bleep] pad done.

You bet, buddy. We're on her.

Narrator: Big red is already running pay dirt

at one end of the last cut.

At the other end, Parker has finally hit pay dirt.

Now he needs Willie and his team

to move over 50,000 yards of tailings

to build a pad 50-feet high,

then drag his wash plant up the slope

and get sluicifer mining for gold.

Parker: We've got to get sluicifer up and running,

and we can't start moving conveyers in

or moving the plant in until that pad's done.

So we need everybody here pounding that pad in

and getting this [Bleep] thing done.

We got to start getting some gold coming in.

Narrator: Expert operator Willie feeds dirt to the trucks.

Willie: This pad is so important to get done right now.

Once we can get both those plants going,

then we're gonna do some damage.

Narrator: To build the 50-foot pad,

Parker has three rock-truck drivers

dumping 18 loads an hour.

Aaron has four years experience.

Aaron: Three days Parker's given us.

I hope we can get it done.

That's a pretty tight time line.

Narrator: Matt is new to mining.

Trying my best. That's all I can do.

Narrator: And new recruit Ali

previously worked with Tony beets.

right from over your cab, pretty well.

and the third traveling between them at all times.

Kevin beets is returning from a short break.

Oh, it's only two days!

Sounds like a plan.

Tony has two goals this season --

take apart and transport dredge two

100 miles down the Yukon river

and hit his 6,000-ounce, $7.2-million target.

I'm just heading back to dredge to see what progress we made.

Narrator: Kevin is spearheading Tony's chase for gold

with dredge one.

Everything slows down when i disappear for some reason.

What the [Bleep]?

See how bad that [Bleep] dredge is tilting?

Hey, Tony, can you come down to the dredge?

She's [Bleep] sunk.

Narrator: Over the weekend, dredge one was left unattended

and is now underwater.

Every hour it's down

is costing Tony up to $1,200 in lost gold.

Kevin: It seems the minute i go away, everyone forgets

that we got a hole in the back pontoon we cannot fix.

The hole is under the waterline.

It fills with water.

Repeat.

No one emptied the back [Bleep] pontoon.

Basically, yes.

That's what i keep telling you.

I go away, y'all [Bleep] [Bleep] up.

[ Laughs ]

I can fix it.

Get every [Bleep] pump on the property,

open up the first pontoon, pump it out.

As soon as that's above water, move to the next pontoon.

Folks gonna get wet [Bleep] feet.

Draining the pond's gonna take [Bleep] forever,

and I'll get this pumped out in a few hours.

Yes, I [Bleep] can.

Narrator: Kevin's plan -- use a pair of small pumps

to empty the water out of the pontoons,

one by one,

to refloat the dredge in just a few hours.

But Tony's insisting he drains the entire pond

before pumping out the pontoons.

Kevin will then have to refill the pond

over the next two days.

Ruby: Kevin.

Dredge is sunk.

Kevin: Yeah, a little bit.

Despite Tony's objections,

Kevin's determined to put his own plan into action

with help from truck driver Ruby.

Here's the battle plan.

We're gonna hook up a couple pumps,

throw them in the hole -- pbbbbbbt! --

make sure they get going,

and suck out as much water as possible.

Well, we're gonna make it [Bleep] work.

-Let's do this. -Fire them up.

[ Motor starts ]

Let's crank it up.

Ruby: Whoo!

Tony sometimes has an idea in his head,

and he [Bleep] runs with it,

but I know how to make this [Bleep] work.

It might take a while, but we'll get it done.

Tony beets' only working dredge is underwater.

So he's going to use the biggest pump on his claim

shifts 5,000 gallons of water a minute.

Narrator: In the freedom cut, Rick ness and his greenhorn crew

are struggling with their 1,000-ounce,

$1.2-million season goal.

But last week, they finally got on the board

with their first 30 ounces of klondike gold.

It's like we finally accomplished

what we've set out here to do.

Zee: A pretty big morale boost.

Once you see it, you just want more.

Gonna take just a bit to get her dialed in here,

I think, but we're learning.

The thing's running.

Now we learn where it wants to be.

Now we learn its sweet spot.

Narrator: Rick has debts to repay

and a crew that has yet to earn a dime,

so he's brought in gold-recovery expert Freddy dodge

to help keep his wash plant running smoothly.

so Freddy can train him how to load the plant.

So I feel like I got the whole crew on my shoulders here.

I don't think zee's run a loader too much.

to build sluicifer's new 50-foot-high pad

so they can get the plant up and running.

Still building the pad, but we're not far off now.

By the end of the day, she'll be pretty [Bleep] damn tight.

We've got Ali.

He's kind of been slowing things down quite a bit,

but we're kind of lighting a fire under his ass now.

So we'll see if we can get him moving really hard.

So Ali didn't quite work out.

Now that we're a truck down,

we're gonna have to figure something out

we're gonna get the pad built.

Narrator: Kevin beets is trying to refloat Tony's dredge.

Tony's big pump has broken,

so now Kevin is stuck trying to pump the water out

with two tiny pumps.

Tony will never hit his season target of 6,000 ounces

if he doesn't get the dredge up and running soon.

Back at the beets camp, a new crew member arrives.

[ Truck horn honks ]

[ Laughs ] A little late, but I'm here.

I was, trying to find your place.

It was a good trip.

Narrator: Juan ibarra was Todd Hoffman's mechanic.

Todd: Juan, we got a big problem there!

You okay? -I got it broke loose.

She's doing fine now.

Narrator: But when Todd stopped mining,

Tony leapt in with a job offer.

Let's do it.

I spent the last three years working for the Hoffmans.

They just kind of got me hooked.

When Todd decided he wasn't gonna come back,

Tony called me up and offered me a job.

So here I am.

Kevin!

Juan, good to see you again.

Been pumping for ages.

The water's not getting out quick enough.

Okay.

Narrator: To get the pump pipes in,

Kevin has to open the pontoons' hatches.

But because they're underwater,

they're refilling as fast as he can pump it out.

Kevin: So what do you think?

We're just pissing in the wind over there, man.

And as much water as we're pulling out,

the same amount of water's coming back in.

But I was thinking what we should do

is just build a little lid and put two holes in it,

and then have a hole for breathing

and then a hole for sucking out of.

We can pump the tank out

without letting more water come in.

-Yeah, it's worth a shot. -Yeah, okay.

Narrator: Juan's plan --

fabricate a new hatch for the pontoons with two pipes.

Once fitted, they'll use one pipe to pump the water out.

The second pipe that reaches above the water level

will allow air back in so the dredge can float again.

This is gonna be the lid that I'm gonna build.

I'm gonna cut it out of that little thin steel.

Juan's trailer is fully loaded

with his own state-of-the-art cnc plasma cutter.

Out here, time is money.

We don't have much time.

This takes all the guess work out of it,

so upload it onto the machine and cut it out.

and this one's gonna be a vent.

I made this one a little higher.

That way we can open it

without water getting into the tank.

Narrator: First, Kevin attaches the ventilation pipe

that will sit above the waterline.

Then he connects the pump pipe.

Hopefully that does it, Kevin.

It's perfect for what it needs to do.

Juan: Just keep those pumps going -- we should be okay.

We should be able to get this thing unsunk.

The water is replaced by the same amount of air

via the breather pipe.

So I am slowly but surely winning.

dredge one is floating again

and ready to mine gold.

Narrator: To get anywhere near his 1,000-ounce goal,

he'll have to dial in his operation and fast.

We got to stop a lot of the [Bleep] clogging up in here.

Well, these slots may be too big, Rick,

and just letting too much water out.

What if I get some bar stock and, like, on every other one

weld a piece over half of them?

That will shoot that water out farther.

before it hits the trommel,

but it's piling up in the corner and clogging the whole system.

Freddy's plan -- reduce the size of the slots

on the spray bar to increase the water pressure.

If anyone overloads the feeder with pay dirt,

the stronger jets should clear the dirt out of the feeder

and send it safely down through the trommel.

You know, with zee feeding it, he's doing the best he can,

but if the water's not right,

it creates a lot of [Bleep] havoc.

It's not the most comfortable place to work.

Hopefully, by blocking some of these off,

this water's gonna go farther out.

The more coverage we can get,

the more material it's gonna push down.
