They were living at home.

This day,
out of everybody,

it's Cody that I miss the most.

The first big shakeup

that happened
in Grant and Cody's paths

took place in 2018,

when Grant was kicked out
of nurse anesthesia school.

Grant gets thrown out.

And after Grant gets
thrown out,

this twinsie situation
seemed to start to break up.

He looked up to Cody.

And when he got kicked out,
I feel he felt inferior to him.

After Grant was
kicked out of school,

he was still able to work in
the medical field as a nurse.

But then
the second hammer dropped.

OK.

He was self-medicating
a patient.

The hospital thought
he was stealing medicine.

He wasn't.

So it wasn't
a theft circumstance.

It was more of like,

I think this is the right way
to do this thing.

It was disagreed upon, and
he was charged in Orange County

with some kind of
theft-related offense

that had to do with medication.

This arrest really
seemed to shake

Grant's vision for his future.

That particular decision

changed this young man's
whole life.

You and I would not be sitting
here if he had not done that.

Your brother's advancing
further than you are,

and you're lagging behind.

That could be a major
source of tension.

And then after that,
things go downhill from there.

Grant then starts
being lonely at home.

He's starting
to be more isolated.

There was a part of me
that felt bad for him,

losing his career.

I felt he was looking for
a place in this world.

Grant seemed to be at
a very low place emotionally.

clicked with me in a very kind
of personal and intimate way

because I kind of saw that
I wasn't alone

I was going to check out
some of the anime

Is "Death Note"
a good starting place?

So "Death Note" is my
number one favorite anime.

It's my brother Cody's
second favorite anime.

But the overall story
of "Death Note"

seemed kind of similar to

a mentality that
I kind of had growing up.

The main premise is that the
main character, Light Yagami,

finds a notebook called
"Death Note."

And it's dropped from
the Shinigami realm,

which is
the gods of death realm.

You put somebody's name
inside the book.

That individual will die
at a certain point.

Light Yagami is idolized by
a lot of people and things

like that, but he doesn't let
all of that go to his head.

He has his own ambitions.

You know, he sees society
in a certain way.

And that's how
I always kind of felt.

And that's why Light
became synonymous with me.

After years of having
a very strong interest

in Japanese media, Japanese
culture, and Japanese art,

Grant and Cody eventually
took a trip to Japan

with their friend Jericho.

Cody was just like, screw
everything that's going on.

We're going to go to this trip,
and we're just going to relax,

enjoy ourselves,
forget about all this nonsense

that had been going on
and just enjoy

what we had always
dreamed of doing.

Cody entirely
financed this trip.

And Cody never really asked
for anything in return.

He just wanted to spend time
with his brother

and see him happy
for the first time in months.

and you're falling asleep in
each one of the ryokan hotels,

and you're just, you know--

you have that moment
where you're reminded of

what your life in waiting
actually is.

It was very depressing for me

at the end of each one
of the days.

It was one day closer
to reality coming back.

Grant had run off and
kind of isolated himself.

And Cody tracked him down,
and they had a heart-to-heart,

as any two brothers facing
a challenging situation would.

And that's where
it's the first instance of me

telling him all about Silviya.

I tell him all about

Cody seemed to have some
sort of sympathy for Grant

in this moment.

And he actually financed
more tokens for Grant

to spend on Silviya
at this point.

When they return
to Florida is when

the dynamic in the family
really started to change.

about this relationship

and everything was
out in the open now,

it was a very uncomfortable,
toxic living environment.

this cataclysmic episode

in my life.

And that was very eye-opening.

So I run away from home.

always the one

who felt like I could
depend on the most

in terms of my extended family.

And Cody started off by just
texting me and then calling me,

seeing what I was doing

and what--basically, like,

what the hell
is your plan here, dude?

I drove to PNC Bank.

And it was in that parking lot
that I recorded those videos.

So the plan in those videos
was me trying to set up

a situation where

And then Cody tells me that
they're taking me to rehab.

I didn't say anything.

You know, I was very quiet.

And it was very--
it was just very still.

And in that moment,
you just kind of, like,

snap mentally, where it's--

you think very clearly
about specific things.

I think Grant felt love
towards Silvie.

Whether that love is rational,

or irrational, or naive
is a whole nother story.

So they take him down
to South Florida.

Cody pays, I think, $8,000,
something of that nature.

And that was supposed to be
for a 60-day stay.

I was in that rehab
facility when my dad

found Silviya's email address.

My dad told Silviya the truth,

you know, the totality
of who I actually was.

But, you know, I just--
it's just embarrassing.

His dad reached out
to Silvie and said that,

hey, my son isn't the man
he said he is.

He doesn't drive a BMW.
He drives a Honda.

He doesn't live alone.
He lives with his parents.

And his entire life is a lie.

Cornerstone was
a 60-day program,

but Grant didn't complete it.

His mom came and picked him up
after only a few weeks

and took him back home.

But by this point, his dad
was understandably fed up

and decided to take him to
a California Pizza Kitchen

and give him an ultimatum.

I mean, it's not going
to go back to normal,

I don't think, ever again.

This was a, you know,
self-destruct event.
