Whoa, Spirit! Hey! What gives?

That's Taylor's Trail. It's really steep.

It's got three tough jumps that are downhill and dangerous.

We almost did it for the Saddle Club ride last year,

but it was too hard for some of the riders.

What's the Saddle Club ride?

Every year kids from all over get together

and go on this super fun group ride into the mountains to have a big picnic.

Oh, my gosh, it's the best!

But it can also be really boring.

Wow! When is it?

-Oh, who knows? -Saturday!

Sorry, Lucky. We'd love for you to come with us,

but you're just not ready for the Saddle Club ride.

[scoffs] Not ready?

Didn't you see how fast Spirit and I can go?

There's a lot more to riding than just going fast.

-I hardly ever fall off him anymore. -[chuckles] That's a start.

But you still have a lot to learn.

Stick with us, and by the time next year's ride rolls around,

you'll be ready to take it on.

Well, she's gonna need to learn jumping

and all that stuff anyway.

There are two things you need to learn: jumps and basic horse commands.

I've set up a course to practice.

If you can get through it, you'll be ready

for anything the Saddle Club throws at you.

Now, head on over to the starting line and let's see what you can do.

[whinnies]

I'm feeling really good about this!

Oh, boy. She can't mount without a fence yet?

Okay, three things you need to work on.

There won't always be something around for you to climb on,

so you need to learn to mount from the ground.

[grunts]

I think you need to jump higher.

In a way, you could say it's for everybody who wants to learn.

But in another way, it's for Lucky.

You're cutting it close if you want to go on that ride.

A big part of riding is taking care of your tack.

A saddle would make jumping a lot easier.

The most important thing you need as a rider is confidence.

Once you commit to a jump,

you can't hesitate.

You have to trust your horse to take you through the course.

I do trust Spirit.

Good! We'll start with a small jump.

Now, remember to lean forward and relax.

[whinnies]

[whimpers]

[neighs]

Okay, good, only this time

when you lean forward and relax,

try leaning forward and relaxing.

-[chuffs and whinnies] -Hyah!

It just takes time to get confident jumping a horse.
