Roll call is usually to try to find out

the different things that are going on out there

that we may encounter,

that we need to be cognizant of.

>> Patrol request in reference to a 62-c.

The more we know about what's happening out there,

the safer we are.

>> Suspect one is a black male.

>> by the time I'd become a police officer,

I had alrey been studying the martial arts

for most of my life.

I got involved in the movie business

and was down in the South,

and the late, great Harry Lee, who was the sheriff

of Jefferson Parish, asked me then to demonstrate

martial arts weapons retention

to some of the police officers down here,

and he was so pleased with what I was doing,

he asked me to come onto the force

and be one of his cops.

>> He's been identified as the shooter on Commerce Street

from several nights ago.

>> So there is a warrant out for him?

>> Yes, sir.

>> It can be very dangerous out on these streets,

but nothing is more important to me

than protecting the people of this parish

and honoring the name of Harry Lee.

That's one of the many reasons

why I'm willing to put myself in harm's way

and be a good cop.

>> Be careful out there.

Come back at the end of the shift.

>> All right, let's saddle up.

>> We travel in two SUVs:

Johnny, Larry, and me in one;

Alex and Lawrence in the other.

We go into the worst neighborhoods

and try to make our presence felt

and step on the crime as best we can.

These are the 'jects, you know.

these are the projects.

And there's always a lot of, uh,

illegal activity along here.

So we're just cruising to make sure everybody's all right.

As a lifelong practitioner of the martial arts,

we're constantly trained to remain calm

in the face of adversity and danger.

When the world is speeding by for others,

I see things for what they are.

A cock of the head,

a foot planted forward or back,

a flick of the wrist:

They all tell me something.

Whether somebody is going to fight,

pull a gun, or run.

We're going to join the other units in pursuit.

She's locking up on us.

At this speed, one false move, and any of us could be dead.

>> We're approaching Stumpf Boulevard.

It's a carjacking,

And we're trying to catch the perpetrator.

He jumps out the car with a .270 winchester rifle,

one live round in the chamber.

We had to taze him because he continued to resist.

The weapon has been recovered,

and we're going to do some dispo checks

on the weapon and the vehicle.

>> The suspect allegedly took the car at gunpoint

from a female.

One of our unmarked units got behind the vehicle,

and the subject started running.

>> I must have passed 37 cars and that big truck.

Big silver had him.

>> The subject came out the car with this gun,

but he dropped it eventually.

>> .270 caliber is a very, very fast round.

It will go through most vests,

and a big enemy of the police.

>> This was in the back of his pants

when they pulled it out earlier.

>> I pulled it out of his pocket.

This look like Jason's.

It's a very, very simple marking

of somebody who's fixing to do bad things.

>> Let's go.

Larry, Alex, come on.

Let's roll. We got work to do.

>> The way we look at it is, every gun we get off the street

is a gun that can't be used to kill us, the police,

or other innocent people who would be robbed,

carjacked.

These guys don't have guns just for fun.

They have them to use them.

Once a year, every officer has to qualify

with firearm in order to use their pistol on duty.

And the next week is Alex's test.

>> if I don't pass weapons qualification,

I definitely don't want to be behind a desk.

I heard Chief Seagal is a heck of a shot,

and I'm going to ask him for pointers to help me

knock off the rust.

He's supposed to try to shoot it in the bullet hole.

>> I'm trying to pass on some of the secrets

that have made me a master shooter.

I don't want to just help Alex pass his test,

but I want him be a better marksman for life.

I shot all of these.

He knows what he's doing,

and he knows how to put lead on target.

Just like zen archery or something,

It's a kind of a meditation for some people,

being able to, you know, just really concentrate

on being masterful with your discipline.

When you want to really build confidence in yourself,

you want to show yourself what you can do ultimately.

And ultimately I think I can shoot the tip off these.

When you are really a good shot,

once in a while, you can light a match,

nut that's some super shooting there, boy.

There's your first one.

You know, being a lifelong practitioner

of the martial arts,

I try to teach everybody not to fight the recoil

of the weapon

but more to become one with the weapon

and let it be an extension of their body.

All right, let me see if I can start to get good here.

I'm going to aim for the match now.

Blew the top of it off,

but not good enough.

From the time he started till the time we finished,

I felt like he learned something.

They're saying that this young man

is hurting their business

because he was drunk and causing trouble with other patrons.

so we just have to really be on our toes.

You know feel on them the wrong way.

So I told him, I said, "well you got to go."

I'd like to solve problems with humor and just kindness

rather than having to use force.

But when people start coming around,

It literally translated as "the way of peace and harmony."

When we patrol these neighborhoods

that are infamous

for burglaries, shootings, and narcotics,

what we're really trying to do

is take away the violence,

Take away the bad guys and restore harmony.

>> We just got a report of some 107s.

That means suspicious persons.

>> Let's see what those guys are doing.

>> Copy that.

If they run, chase them down and Johnny and I

will cut them off at the pass.

>> Several suspects inside and outside of the location.

One of the suspects fled.

Larry's in pursuit.

The question is, how do we get through there?

We've lost radio contact with Larry.

This is a very dangerous situation.

We've got to find him as soon as we can.

>> No, we're going to just go around.

>> All right.

>> We're just trying to get around the corner so we can

go see where they are.

Come on, we're going around the block this way.

>> Let me see your hands!

>> You all right, Larry?

>> He kind of ran right in front of our truck.

So I put the truck in park, and I was able to get out.

The subject went to jump a fence,

but he couldn't make it.

We grabbed him, put him on the ground,

and right where he was laying,

they had a silver and black semiautomatic handgun.

>> Where the gun?

>> You all found it?

>> Yeah, it was right here.

>> Back up. Back up.

>> We're going to have it dusted for fingerprints,

and we're checking for any other contraband he might have

threw down.

>> Marijuana.

>> That must have been what he had.

>> I'm thinking he's just about to, like, whip my ass

and throw me on the car, so I just ran.

I got scared.

>> He dropped the gun. That's what he's running from.

>> Why he ran.

>> What kind of gun you have?

What kind of gun you have?

>> Okay, I'll tell you what you're going to do.

You keep your face down and you tell the deputies

the way it is.

>> Hey, stay down the street, partner.

You all just turn around.

Turn around and go back up the street.

>> This is getting really hinky right now, Johnny.

>> Look at these guys. Look at them.

The reason why the individuals

kept getting closer and closer to the prisoner

is because they wanted to let him know

if he said the wrong thing,

they would be extremely unhappy.

>> I said turn around and go back up the street.

I'm only going to tell you one time.

They're liable to walk up to this guy

and pop him in the car.

>> That's what I'm worried about.

Criminals usually prey on weakness.

They can smell it.

Those of us who have studied the martial arts

as long as I have,

we can usually see those kind of predators.

>> We need to get him out of here.

We don't have no room in here.

Put him in this one.

>> Even though the kid never told us anything,

we're still going to have to move him to safety.

We'll take him down to the station and question him there.

>> All right, let's saddle up.

[gunshots]

>> It's time for Alex to sight arm qualification.

I went over with him kind of a Zen method of breathing

and sight picture and posture and hand grips and stance.

If he fails, he could end up on desk duty,

so he really needs to pass this.

Let's see how well he does.

Body position is everything.

In terms of being able to really have beautiful stability.

your elbows, your hips.

Just let it fly right where it's supposed to go.

The Zen masters in Zen archery too,

they don't pull the arrow,

they push the arrow,

and it's the same with that pistol.

You draw, and you just, just push it and just guide it.

All right, you see how steady I am?

You notice that.

Don't try to do anything.

Don't try.

>> Alex gets 60 shots.

120-point maximum, and in order to qualify,

he must make 96 points or better to pass.

>> Remember, when the target faces you,

draw your weapon, approach your barricade,

and commence firing.

Watch your target.

>> Police, don't move!

>> If a police officer is not prepared, as a last result,

to use his weapon,

he shouldn't be a police officer.

>> Right, next stage of firings going to be 12 rounds,

25 seconds.

[gunshots]

>> And, uh, we'll check his target.

>> Man, I think that lesson helped you, buddy.

>> We'll see in a couple seconds, Chief.

but if this were on the street

and that's the way you shot,

At least it's over with.

Pressure was on, and at least I qualified,

so I'm happy about that.
