Why did you want to become a girl-group member?

I was one back in 2007.

I went through training for it before that, too.

How many teams were you in?

3 teams total, including the one I debuted in.

We were a 4-member girl-group, called "Club Jin."

The owner of the label loved going to clubs, and

he wanted us to become "the best" in the clubs.

Then I was in "Pink Spicy."

The label owner loved the color pink, and he wanted us to show the spice

of the K-Pop world.

Then I finally debuted through "Swan," and it was 2007.

I think we should've picked better names.

We became like the swans, with nowhere else to go.

What was the hardest thing for you then?

They were very strict, in tight schedule.

We'd wake up at 4 AM,

and run by the Han River for 3 hours, Monday through Saturday.

On Sundays, we'd have to hike up to the top of a mountain.

Wake up at four?

Why?

It was like a military drill.

Yes, we had to get in push-up position with our fists.

I don't think a lot of people know that I went through so much.

Everything was hard then.

The managers bothered us so much.

We'd just get disciplined for no reason.

They won't let us sleep.

And they'd say really mean things like, "Did you parents teach you like that?"

But I persevered because I wanted to become a singer so badly.

We recorded our album.

But it didn't actually come out.

The next one too, it flopped just in 3 months.

Then I was interviewed by the current owner of my label.

Then he asked if I had any thoughts about singing trot songs.

Then I ran away from him.

I didn't want to do it.

I do have a sad feeling about not becoming a girl-group member.

Yes, I heard you majored in composition. I majored in voice.

I was the class president when I was in the third grade in elementary school.

I auditioned for a children's choir from school.

Starting then, I'd travel overseas and perform in choir.

Twice a year, we performed at famous arts theaters in Korea.

(That's how she naturally dreamed of being a opera singer)

To major in voice, individual lessons are very important. I'd get private lessons

at least for an hour a day, everyday.

But the cost of those lessons...

I still remember the amount.

Later, my mother had to sell her ring.

And got in trouble by my father for it.

(She made into a famous music school with the entire family's hope)

After you get into college, you start to apply to be a professor's apprentice.

There was professor named Park Jeong-won, who was the best soprano.

So only the top three can be her students, that was the system.

And I made it to top three.

It's incredibly difficult to get into Han-yang University as a vocal major.

How was school life in Han-yang?

School... Um...

(Ye-won hesitates to answer such a simple question)

I thought a lot about how difficult it is to sing.

I had to lose a lot of weight as I started acting, which made it harder to sing.

And I had to strain my voice so much to be a soprano.

Then there was a problem with my vocal cord.

There was a scene in "Tidal Wave" that I was in, which required me to scream.

And my voice just stopped working after that.

It's very difficult for a singer when there's an issue with vocal cord.

Of course it's a bad thing that your vocal cord developed an issue,

but it happens to majority of singers.

Because they use their vocal cords so much.

But what I'd like to ask you is,

I see that you completely stopped singing after that.

Yes, I did.

Did you not want to sing anymore? Or was it something else?

What was scarier than the issue with my vocal cord,

was the fear, "What if I can't sing at all anymore," "What if something

worse happens?"

That made me tense up in fear and I just couldn't sing.

I panicked and couldn't remember how to sing, from where.

I lost all my confidence.

And I started to avoid singing little by little.

I was asked many time to be in musicals.

I'd say, "I can't sing."

"Didn't you study voice?"

"Oh, I just can't sing."

"You studied voice!"

"I can't sing."

"I won't sing. I'm just going to act."

(She began to be bitter as much as she loved it before)

I didn't want to sing anymore.

Even when we went to go sing karaoke, I didn't want to hear

others sing, and I wouldn't sing either.

Recently, I was on a show that I had to do an impromptu acting.

They told me to sing all of a sudden, but there wasn't a song that came to mind.

I totally blanked out.

So I sang the national anthem.

Sing a song! Sing!

I can't sing...

But that stuck with me for several days after.

I blamed myself for it.

"How could I have sung the national anthem?"

I blamed myself that way.

I still did major in singing, but how could there be no song that I can

remember the lyrics to?

That made me feel so small.

Earlier today too, they were talking about harmonizing and stuff.

I couldn't even make a sound, let alone harmonizing.

They were excited about adding on notes, but I wasn't prepared to enjoy it.

I felt a little...

I really wasn't going to cry this time!

What should I do?

I didn't think I was going to cry.

I saw a movie called "La La Land" recently.

It made me want to sing so comfortably like them.

It was very stressful for me to film "Harmony," the movie about singing.

But I wanted to enjoy singing once again.

I was going to throw it away but in order for me to love music again,

I wanted to at least paint it, pour out a little bit of my soul into it.
