With the greatest respect

to Mr. Simpson

I would point out

that each of their campaigns,

however admirable,

will only appeal to a limited

section of the constituency.

In contrast, the central

principle of the living wage

is that it benefits society

as a whole.

Now, encouraging manufacturers

to invest in their own workforce

rather than abroad may lead

to lower profits at first,

but in the long run,

the increased spending power

of their workers

means that these manufacturers

will have created a new market

for their goods.

This is not

a constituency issue.

I make no apologies for that.

Is it a national one.

It affects, benefits

the whole nation.

And that, ladies and gentlemen,

is what the Independent

Labour Party is here for.

That's what I should have said

10 years ago,

only I didn't have the words.

Everything I ever knew

about art,

everything I ever wanted to do

with it came from Dad,

So I went home.

What papers?"

I said,

"What's the vicar on about?"

[ Sighs ]

He went to the dresser,

took the papers out of a drawer,

and tore them up in front of me.

"Not for the likes of us,"

he said.

[ Breathes heavily ]

I went upstairs, packed a bag,

and walked out.

Saturday was the first time

I've seen him since.

[ Sighs ]

That's it, really.

Both of us feel betrayed.

Now it's too late.

We'll see.
