who genuinely believed,

who swore that they had
seen a ghost?

- Well, I would say

that you can't always
trust your eyes.

- This is an illusion

- [Angela] It's empty?

- Yes, so it would appear.

But, if we could just take
down the studio lights.

- [Angela] Sure.

- Now,

your eyes are telling you

that the box is empty.

But if we raise the lights,

something begins to take shape.

- [Angela] So, is it human,

or is it a ghost?

- [Richard] It's not a ghost.

It's your last guest
who's very kindly agreed

to help me with this
demonstration.

- Jane, thanks very much

and being such a great
sport, thanks a lot.

- Thanks.

- Well, are you gonna
tell us how you did it?

- Yes, if I could just
have the help

of Stacy and Susanna
for a moment.

Ah good.

You remembered the spray.

If I could just ask you Angela,

to spray the spirit box.

- [Angela] Ah, glass.

- There you are, you see
like many magic tricks,

it's done with some glass,
and some light.

You use the light to
create the image

inside the box,

when all the time,

Jane was, in fact,
standing over there.

This is the story

of Borley Rectory.

It was supposed to have been

the most haunted
house in England.

Whoever slept there,

would wake up screaming.

[screams]

Because they would see
this terrible,

disembodied, floating hand

at the end of their bed.

But Winfrey wasn't frightened.

He had a good dinner,

a few glasses of wine,

and fell asleep.

A little later,

as the clock stuck 12,

he woke up,

and screamed, [screams]

because there,

at the end of the bed,

he saw the terrible,

hand floating towards him.

But, Winfrey had a gun.

He reached out for it,

and took aim at the
floating hand,

he could just make it out
in the darkness,

and he fired.

[screams]

He screamed again.

That's how Winfrey shot
off his big toe. [chuckles]

You see, there was no
floating hand at all,

it was his foot all the time.

[chuckles]

[suspenseful bass tone]

[tinkling]

[gasps]

[light somber orchestra music]

- I don't believe this.

There was no evidence of
wordworm
on the surveyor's report.

- Well,

looks like you get 'em now,
old man.

You better call someone in.

- Your friend Peter
says we've got woodworm.

- Oh, no.

- I mean, look at that.

That's rotten right
the way through.

- I thought we had the
house all checked out.

- I'm gonna write to
those surveyors.

certain events that have
taken place here, recently,

I think it's only fair

welcome the ghost, as well.

- Richard.

to share accommodations

with some departed spirit,
