into my transition.

And I've had nose surgeries.

There's definitely days
where I feel dysphoric

and wish I can go
get Top Surgery

or gender-affirming surgeries.

But I'm still trying to find
who I am as a person,

and working on the internal

as opposed
to the external right now.

DAPHNE: The first time I ever
stepped foot into a strip club,

just seeing the way these girls

own their femininity on stage,

that's what I need to find
for myself in my transition.

And that became my goal.

This was a moment
of empowering myself

to find my own sense
of femininity.

to be both trans and cis, right?

DAPHNE: A cisgender person
is someone who identifies

with the gender
that they were born with.

And a trans person

usually identifies
as either the opposite,

or doesn't identify
with either genders,

a non-binary identification.

And this is an event
where there's both cis

and trans women.

JORDAN: When I first met Daphne,

she kept her energy
very much to herself,

even though
she's this beautiful tall woman.

Yeah.

JORDAN: And just has now
this power and this presence

about her that is very kind,
but still very captivating,

you wouldn't have seen that
even just a year ago.

I feel like, you've grown
so much since the show

just because of like,
the confidence that's given you,

uh, onstage and offstage.

Uh, where I grew up,
it was super conservative.

I was identifying as male
for a lot of my childhood.

[music]

I think I always sort of lean
toward a more feminine side.

I ran away from my trans
identity for the longest time

because of the misogyny
and femme phobia

that I had learned.

I had to unlearn
so many societal pressures,

not only with being Asian,
but being Catholic.

And it wasn't
until I started doing drugs

and exploring more of that,

I started realizing
maybe there's something more,

maybe there's something I'm not
understanding about myself.

And it took going through
a really tough period

of partying and addiction,

until I finally realized
either I die living a lie,

or I do my best
by living my truth.

[music]

DAPHNE: So, thank you guys

and especially with taking
a chance on this event.

I mean, you've been--
got since the beginning.

It's been like forever.

This has turned
into something so big now

with everybody
almost believing in us.

is meaningful to me

because being a woman
of trans experience,

and there's not another place
girls like myself

can dance freely.

WOMAN: I literally hated myself
for a long time.

I didn't feel
like I was beautiful,

and being my authentic self has
changed my life is I'm happier.

I don't feel like I'm being
somebody that I'm not.

DAPHNE: You know, I do my best
to curate the lineup

to be as inclusive as possible.

You know when you got
to practice to see

the hair extensions,
you got to stay on.

- WOMAN: Yes.

that's my favorite.

There's some girls
who are extremely passing

and feminine.

There's some girls who are
earlier in their transition.

And they're still
just as attractive as the girls

who's had her surgeries done.

WOMAN: A lot of trans women

have it easier
when where passible.

But what about the people
who aren't fully there yet

with their transition?

When you don't get treated with
the same amount of kindness.

It's important
to represent them,

and all of the different forms
they come in,

post-op, pre-op,
having taken hormones at all.

Some of them go
for a more natural look

or a little bit more cosmetic.

Jolene Show is just opening that

for people to see
there's so much diversity

and that we come
in all shapes, sizes.

And our sexual organs
don't really define us.

- DAPHNE: Jordan?

Pole dancing has helped me

to find my own version
of femininity.

Utilizing movement,

I was able to move past

a lot of negative self-talk
that I had,

uh, of being too manly,

you're being too masculine.

I found out
it's really helped me

be comfortable
and love my body.

Love myself, trans or not.

I may not have the normal body

that a woman should have
conventionally.

But what should that be?

WOMAN: A lot of us don't grow up
being taught how to be women.

We have to discover
how to be women.

A lot of the times we don't
have our moms or dads saying,

"Hey, this is how you just
grow up being a casual girl."

We started off
with the cross-dressing,

for the sexy clothes, trying to
figure it out little by little,

and to have a place
where trans women

can express themselves without
having to fall into norms

is really helpful for them
to start really understanding

who they are and not what
they're supposed to be.

WOMAN: And as a non-binary
trans person myself,

I don't feel super comfortable
in most straight, sexy spaces.

So I just think
it's a cool place to be able

to be comfortable in myself
and appreciate

other people's bodies.

As a trans person myself,
I think that

there's kind of expectations

of what it looks
like to be a woman.

WOMAN: And in this show, there's
all different types of bodies,

all different sizes and shapes,

and people that are performing
that make it very comfortable.

Which is really amazing.

And I feel, for me,
it's very liberatory

to see people being celebrated.
