it appears that she had two children.

The name of her husband
hasn't been declared,

but Mekhail and Sheena
were born of that first relationship.

Indrani's ex-husband, Siddartha Das,

the elusive character in the entire saga
who has been untraceable till now.

tracked down Siddartha Das
at his residence in Kolkata.

[Siddartha] I don't know anything.

Suddenly you had
Siddartha Das popping up.

You had to chase him.

I remember still, um, a reporter

had to chase him in, uh, in an auto,

and he had wrapped up his face
to hide his identity.

We have with us Siddartha Das,

who is the first husband
of-- Sheena Bora murder case,

and who is the first husband
of Indrani Mukerjea.

Sir, give us an idea,
was Indrani always running after money?

Was she always running after money?

[Siddartha] Not exactly.

But she had a…

tendency.

I think Siddartha did care for me a lot.

But Siddartha is not Sheena's father.

I am an only child of my parents.

With Mom, I was alright.

But then not so much, you know…

I had a very, very distant relationship
with my dad.

One night, when I was 14,

it was kind of a little bit
past my bedtime, so…

I am lying in bed.

So, I'm half asleep, half awake,
so I do think that I'm dreaming.

You know, I, like, have my clothes off,
and even before I realized,

you know, it's Dad.

I was raped the first time
by my father that night.

The next day, obviously,
kind of broke down.

And I told my mom about everything,
what happened.

And Mom says that, "Listen,
don't talk about this to anybody."

And I was raped the second time
when I was 16.

The next day,

there was a big row
in between Mom and Dad,

and Dad was out of the house.

He was gone.

Three months down the line,

I started kind of, uh, being a bit ill.

So, Mom said that, "Okay,
we'll then go to our gynec and test you."

And then,

you know, I learn that I'm pregnant.

[somber music playing]

She said that, "Listen, she is,

you know,
almost four months pregnant,

and I think it's going to be very,
very risky."

"We can't go ahead with an abortion."

"We can't do it."

I mean, I was very sure that,
by the time, you know,

I could feel the child
moving in my stomach,

I knew it in my head
that I was not going to…

give up the child for adoption.

Even if I had to live with the stigma

of not being able to explain
to the world who the father was.

-[reporter] Indrani Mukerjea…
-[Upendra] Yeah.

-[reporter] Your daughter.
-[reporter 2] Your daughter.

And that's where actually
I meet Siddartha for the first time.

He was just a friend, I mean.

One fine day,
I just blurted it out to him,

Siddartha basically said that, "Look,

if you would like,

I would be very happy
to give the child my name,”

which was actually something
I had not expected.

Siddartha took that decision

to come in and take responsibility
of Sheena, of me,

for a better life that
he would've never had otherwise.

Sheena was born
a couple of months later in '87.

[baby coos]

I'll tell you why I thought of "Sheena."

I used to like Sheena Easton a lot.
I used to enjoy her music.

So, I think that "Sheena" name
kind of stuck in my head.

My reason of taking my relationship
with Siddartha ahead was Sheena.

I went back to Guwahati.

And Siddartha moved into my room finally.

I conceived again.

And I wanted to go ahead
with the pregnancy.

It was my choice to go ahead
with the pregnancy.

Months later, Mekhail was born.

And then I had…

one more cesarean section,

which was, again, another scar on my body,
but a welcome scar.

And Siddartha was kind of
performing the duties

of a father of a newborn child.

At four o'clock in the evening.

When was Sheena born?

When was Sheena born?

Sheena was born 11/2/1987.

Mekhail was born 9/9/88.

[reporter] Why did you not get in touch
with your children?

I was not financially sound.

They were brought up by their
grandfather and grandmother.

that was beginning to become
very apparent to me.

ordinary guy.

So here, I am now, almost 17.

Mom came to see me in my room.

Then she said that, you know, "I think…

we should kind of…

have Dad back home."

That was the turning point in my life.

There was nobody,

nobody…

who was there to take care of me.

I decided…

to leave.

I would've killed myself.

I could not… I could not…

see my rapist a third time round.

[Mekhail] Indrani, as a mother…

why would she hand over
her daughter Sheena to a molester?

Siddartha Das is our father.

Since our childhood,
we've only known that.

To save her own skin, Indrani…

comes up with a new story, a new theory,

and keeps on blaming others.

My parents, Indrani and Siddartha,
were never there in my life.

For me, my grandparents
were like my parents.

What is left behind in this house
is like the old memories of our childhood…

and the hardship
which my grandparents took

to bring us up.

Sometimes, in a month,
such situations used to arise

where our grandparents stayed hungry
to make sure we had food on our plates.

When we were growing up,
Sheena was like my elder sister,

but we were like best friends.
We used to play together.

We used to do all kinds of,
you know, childish stuff.

Our neighbors used to say,
"They are the most mischievous…

troublemakers in the neighborhood."

So… I remember that much.

[Amrita] I am a Delhi-based reporter,
but I grew up in Guwahati.

This is where I met
both Sheena and Mekhail.

Sheena was a year younger to me.

She was very popular
with not just the students

but also the teachers.

Mekhail, on the other hand,
was a very naughty person.

He would constantly get into trouble
with the teachers.

[Mekhail]
Sheena was more curious than me.

"Why did she leave?
What happened?"

"Why are my parents not together?"

Sheena used to think, "If she gave birth
to us, then why did she leave?”

Indrani left us in such a way that…

she didn't even keep any contact.

She didn't know if we were alive or not.

And Sheena kept all this sadness
in her heart.

She expressed herself in a diary.

[dramatic music playing]

[Amrita] I found out that…

there is a way that I can get the diary.
I don't want to go into details of it,

because that is not going to be good
for my source,

but there was a point
when I did see the diary.

[dramatic music playing]

I was reading what she wrote
about her mother,

and it was kind of shocking.

I took some pictures of it,
and then I wrote my story.

This is the diary entry,
which we've put out right now,

is the diary entry where she speaks
about her mother, Indrani.

She very categorically says
that she's very depressed.

She says her future is bleak.

And she goes on to lash out
at Indrani Mukerjea,

saying that, "I hate my mother."

"She's a witch," and she calls her
other such derogatory terms as well.

[news anchor] She says,
"I don't know how I feel about my mother."

"Did she not even remember us?
Does she not care about us?"

[Indrani] The story, basically,

that my mother gave
to Mekhail and Sheena was…

they had taken their responsibility

because they wanted me to go out

and because I was extremely bright.

And they wanted me not to get
kind of just bogged down

with kids and move on with my life.

[upbeat music playing]

You know, I was this, uh…

young girl who came into Calcutta,

and, most importantly, you know,
I think what was very intriguing

was people didn't really know much
about me.

[Abhijit] When I met Indrani first,

she needed stability
because she was staying in YWCA.

She didn't have anybody,
family was back home.

She needed a home,
she needed a roof over her head.

Someone to take--
bring some food to the table.

Sanjeev was one of the options she had.

[Indrani] I had gone out for dinner
with my friends from the YWCA,

and Sanjeev had come too,
with his friends.

We got along very well initially.

I was quite attracted to him.

[reporter] Indrani's ex-husband…

[indistinct clamor]

[reporter] Sanjeev!

Sanjeev, you must answer these questions.

What's the motive
behind the murder, Sanjeev?

Sanjeev, what's the motive
behind the murder?

Why did you kill Sheena, Sanjeev?

Answer!

How and on what basis
was Sanjeev Khanna arrested?

I am shocked, because…

he doesn't have
anything like that in him.

He is that kind of person
who will even help a wounded dog.

Sanju Khanna was my schoolmate,
and he became my secretary.

And then he was also a member of my clubs.

I'm member of most clubs here, but CCFC…

-Most happening club.
-The most happening club,

the drinking man's club,
the sports club.

[Suchi] And Sanju is a very active member
of the club.

Every Saturday they will
have some party

or the other where Sanju is invited.

Then came Indrani on the scene.

Sanjeev introduced her to everybody.

She met scores of people there.

And slowly and steadily,
her social circle also started growing.

She was a bit of a social climber,

looking for people who could probably,
you know, elevate her status.

From a man's point of view,

there was something about her.

There was something charming about her.

Well, something sexy, as you can call it.

Whether it was her lips or eyes,

there was something which drew
a man's eyes onto her.

I think I do realize
that when I walk into a room,

I think I always end up

being one of the most attractive women
in the room.

Men do look at me.

And women get uncomfortable.

She had a way of, you know,

enticing or getting to you,
you know, to connect.

She was manipulative,

so if she wanted something,
she would have it, you know.

Indrani Bora came to Kolkata,
she had a lot of aspirations.

She met Sanjeev Khanna,
and they fell in love with each other.

They stayed together
for more than five to six years.

This was the house where they stayed
together in a joint family.

He came from a very decent family.

I mean, he pretty much ticked
all the boxes.

We had a really nice,
good, Punjabi wedding…

with all his family.

And I had no family.

And then, four years later,
I conceived again.

Vidhie was born. It was '97.

I'm telling you that the first time
she told my wife that,

-"This is… I'm having a baby."
-First baby.

"This is my first baby."

[Indrani] Sangeeta, please give me my tea.

[Sangeeta] Yes.

[Indrani mutters]

[Indrani] Thank you. Thank you, Sangeeta.

Thank you.

In the court of law,

I am still kind of innocent
till proven guilty, right?

Even though I spent, like,
so much of time in prison.

But in society,
I have already been tarnished.

My reputation is gone.

I have already been branded.

The murderess who has killed
her own daughter,

which is like, it is so untrue.

It is so factually incorrect.

For example,
I have no connect with Sanjeev.

Apart from Vidhie, you know,
because Vidhie is a common factor.

Anything regarding her school
or if it's a happy birthday message.

Apart from that,

Vidhie and myself have not been
in Sanjeev's life for the last 25 years.

[Rajdeep] Why would a husband
from your previous marriage

help you and become a co-accused…

in killing off the daughter…

from a previous relationship?

There are various theories thrown up.

[news anchor]
Indrani is a con woman.

She is a con woman.

So how do you
emotionally blackmail somebody?

All these tactics,
this is all criminality.

My assumption is that Indrani
manipulated him.

And, you know, gave some sob stories,

saying that maybe Vidhie's life
is in danger.

That's my opinion or my view.

And he fell for it,
he was very gullible,

and to some point, stupid, I would say.

We're not taking sides,
we're not casting any direct aspersions.

We're providing a sense

of what Sanjeev Khanna's activity was
on social media

at the time of the murder,

and April 30, 2012,

just days after the murder
is alleged to have taken place,

"Sometimes I get so weird,
I even freak myself out."

What makes the Sheena Bora
murder case so unique is…

the more information
that was provided to us,

the more confusing it became,
the stranger it became.

And with every answer
that we were supposedly being given,

more questions arose.

Peter was my husband when I got arrested.

Sanjeev is just a blip in the radar
for me.

Now with Peter, Peter was my life.

I knew that there was something more
for me that I needed to achieve,

and I had the fire in the belly.

[Abhijit] She wanted to get away.

She realized that she couldn't do much
in Calcutta.

[Indrani] I like Bombay,
I like the vibes,

I like the energy in Bombay.

And I knew that that was the place for me.

So, one evening,
there's a fashion show at the Taj.

Peter and I met at the bar.

Peter was powerful.

He said that, "I'm the CEO of Star TV."

So, I said, "Yeah, I am Indrani."

So, he asks me,

"Are you Bengali? Because Indrani
is a very Bengali name," so I said, "No."

"My married name is Khanna."
I still remember what I said.

Then he volunteered the information
that he was a divorcee.

He asked me, he said,
"Do you want to be a…

small fish in the big pond
or a big fish in the small pond?"

So, I said, "I want to be a big fish
in the big pond."

Meanwhile, my relationship
was falling apart with Sanjeev.

I had decided that,

you know, I am going to file
for a divorce.

And I am going to take Vidhie.

I was very, very clear
that Vidhie is going to stay with me.

And I moved to Bombay.

[Vidhie] When I met Peter,
I landed from Calcutta with my mom,

I was sitting on the trolley,
on, like, the suitcase,

and I was just there
with my little pigtails.

And he-- I saw him, and he saw me,

and it was just-- it was, like,
so cute and awkward, you know?

I was just, like, "Hello, I'm Vidhie."

And he was just like, "Hello."

And he had to really bend down,
because I was, like, this high.

I think we got home,
and then I ran into the kitchen.

And I looked at my dad, and I was like,
"Do you have any chocolate?"

And he was just like, "I do."

I was like, "Okay, can you give me some?
But, like, don't tell Mama."

And he-- [laughs]
That was just our first secret.

And we, like, never--
He never told my mom.

He never told her anything.
And I think, instantly, we just became…

It was that father-and-daughter bond,
you know?

[Deejay] It was a bit of a surprise
that she took the baby along with her,

and… as far as I'm concerned,
abandoned Sanjeev Khanna,

because he was broken after that.

Heartbroken.

[Vidhie] Sanjeev really wanted
to have a relationship with me.

But I was in a really different space
then, you know.

I was so wrapped around, you know,

Peter being my father,
and I was just so in love with him.

I mean, me and my father
were closer than me and my mom.

[Rajdeep] You see, the question is,
how much did Peter really know?

And how much has Peter really revealed?

Has Peter also told us less
than what he really knows?

before the police yesterday.

When asked, Peter Mukerjea refused to sit

with a joint questioning session
with his wife, Indrani.

he made a monkey out of himself

when he started lying to the media
after I was arrested.

I am completely shocked and horrified
by the information that I am getting

and by the revelations that are coming out
almost by the hour.

Both in terms of, um…

you know, who Sheena Bora actually is,

you know, how many marriages
Indrani has had in the past,

and the, uh, entire episode
of Sheena Bora going missing.

Obviously, I have three cesarean scars…

on my stomach.

Right?

So, Peter knew everything,

right from inception.

I really want to believe that, you know,

my father, Peter, doesn't have anything
to do with it. I want to believe that.

But what I will say is there are
far too many…

fucking weird things that have happened.

We have a beautiful home in Bombay.

The Marlow house.

It was a pretty high-valued flat.

My parents had decided that they're going
to gift it to me on my 18th birthday.

26th of August is my birthday.

25th of August
is when my mom got arrested.

On the day of my mom's arrest,
in the evening,

there was a letter sent out
to stop the transfer from happening.

Now, your wife is in a police station
charged for murder.

And the first thing you can think of
is to tell the building manager,

"Stop the transfer of property."

What the hell is going on?

[news anchor] Perhaps the biggest amount
of silence

comes from Peter Mukerjea himself.

The fact that he didn't file
a missing person report for Sheena,

who actually lived in his house.

So, you've heard, I was listening.
I was making a cup of tea,

and I was listening to what
Indrani was saying.

-[Rahul] Hmm.
-[Peter] So, we've spoken to a…

this friend of ours, Deven Bharti.
He is the head of the Mumbai crime branch.

-[Rahul] Hmm.
-[Peter] We've called him,

we have given him the numbers, so…

that's what we've done,
given both your number

and Sheena's number.

So, he'll find out where the phone is.

-[Rahul] Yeah, okay, okay. Yeah.

is a senior police officer.

And of course, you know,
a lot of times, this happens.

Like, you approach a friendly officer…

saying "Boss, can you just find out
where she might be?”

"We don't want to get into the registering
a case and all that stuff.”

"As a friend, can you help out?”

If we don't--
If we can't find out where she is

in the next-- you know, in the--
by the end of this after--

well, it's already half-five,
so we're gonna have--

I'm gonna have to go and file
a proper report in the police station.

and Indrani Mukerjea approached him

and told him that it's a personal case

and that Sheena has been found,

so there is no need
to go for any investigation.

Did a senior cop protect Peter Mukerjea?

why was Rakesh Maria really taking
so much of interest in this personally?

I have neither heard nor seen
a police officer of such a high rank,

Commissioner of Police, Mumbai,

who has got more than 40,000 people
working under him,

taking up a single case
and devoting all his time and energy

in the investigation of the case.

Then the conspiracy theory started.

Is he trying to protect Peter Mukerjea?

Because that is the question
which everybody had in mind.

Then Rakesh Maria was transferred.

Mumbai's Police commissioner Rakesh Maria

has been moved out in the middle
of the Sheena Bora murder probe.

What happened to Rakesh Maria
is he got instantly moved out of the case.

It was very humiliating,
actually, for him.

He was going to retire.
This was going to be his big break.

After a mega mess
over who exactly is handling

the Sheena Bora murder investigation,

the Maharashtra government yesterday
decided to hand it over to the CBI.

But will that lead to speedy justice
in this case?

[Rajdeep] The Mumbai police
claims it's cracked it,

and then suddenly, now,

the case is being transferred
to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Naturally, the impression
that is gonna go out there

is that, "Is there a cover-up?"

After the case got moved to CBI,

my dad got arrested
within a couple of days.

[Indrani] One big regret that I have
is my marriage to Peter.

And I genuinely believe

that I would not have been
in this situation today

had I not married Peter.

Mr. Anil Sinha has confirmed to me

that just 20 minutes ago,

Peter Mukerjea has been arrested.

and misleading the investigating agencies.

The CBI is also looking
at the financial angle

as a possible motive for the murder.

[Mekhail] It was a cousin of Indrani…

who actually saw an article
in a newspaper,

where it was published
that Indrani got married with Peter.

For at least 15 years,
we were not in touch.

We posted a letter to her.

And surprisingly, we got a… reply back.

In December 2002,

a letter arrived in Star,

which was handwritten by my father.

So, the letter basically said that,

"We are going through serious
financial hardships…

and we would like you
to financially help us,

because now your kids are growing up."

She immediately told us
that she will be sending two tickets

for Sheena and me.

We were very excited, obviously,

to meet our mother, after so many years,

whom we have seen in just photographs.

[camera shutter clicks]

I did not abandon my children.

I left my children with my mother

because I was not even an adult.
I could not feed them, clothe them,

I could not-- I did not have the means.

And at the right time, I would have.

It was perhaps a matter of coincidence
that that letter came.

[indistinct announcement over PA system]

[Mekhail] Finally, that day came.

That was our first time
experiencing a flight somewhere.

We even fought
for the window seat. [laughs]

Personally, it never came
to Sheena's mind or mine

that she was so successful
and that our life would be awesome.

We didn't think about that.

We were just happy
because we were meeting our mother.

We thought we would finally be a family.

But what happened next
would be the reason…

she tried to kill both of us.
