I still remember that.

I found it extremely strange from 2012,

there was like, suddenly no contact.

When people were asking, like,
"Where is Sheena? Where is Sheena?"

My mom would go into kind of a fit.

My mom told me Sheena was at the US,
and I asked her a couple of times.

It was just understood that, okay,
she's moved to LA

and she's doing her own thing there.

I think after a while, you know,
this is where I find it so weird

and I'm still not able
to understand this, is…

no one asked about Sheena
after, like, a certain point.

Like, Sheena was just not…

brought up ever by anyone.

Like, at all.

It's, like, almost like a spell
was cast over us to forget Shee…

Sheena even existed.

When I reached home on the 25th
of August right after school.

Oh God, the whole house
had kind of turned upside down.

There were just so many cops everywhere.

It was just so foreign,
the concept of cops in our house.

Anything to do with police
was just so foreign to me.

Then I started to get really angry
with the police

rummaging through our stuff, you know,

I'm like, "What the fuck is going on?"

My mom told me to calm down.

One of the cops, he asked the house help
whether she knew Sheena.

I went straight to my mom
and I asked her, like…

"Mom, what is this about Sheena?"

And she just looked at me…

and, you know, before she could answer,

the cop was just like,

"You can't talk."

My mom gets arrested.

I don't see her after that at all.

Media tycoon Indrani Mukerjea

has been arrested by the Mumbai police

on charges of murdering her sister
almost three years ago.

[man] I got a call from Peter.

"Indrani has just been arrested,
on charges of murder."

I was so close to her. I had no idea.

I switched on the TV
and there's Sheena's photo.

We were speechless.

What the hell happened?

[news anchor] It's a case
that has confused, fascinated

and shocked us all.

This was a case where almost every day,

there was a new revelation coming out.

[woman] The family themselves,
they are leaking a story a minute.

[man] Every smile,
every hug, was fake for us.

To show the world we are all good.

that could have led Indrani to kill Sheena

in cold-blooded murder?

Do I believe someone within the family
knows what's happened to Sheena?

Absolutely. I believe
there's more than one person.

I was bringing home
some material from Varsai.

On the way back,

I saw that a mango fell from the tree,
so I stopped the tempo on the side.

I smelled something.

It was a very foul smell,
so I searched for the source of it.

There was a hand with nails.

The nails were painted with nail polish,

and the ground near it showed signs
of being burned.

Then I called the police station.

They collected bones and some remains.

From the spot where the body was found,

we dug a pit under a tree
ten to 12 feet away from it

and we buried it in the pit.

In 2012,
the dead body clearly showed

that it was a case of murder
and foul play.

The moment there is a report that
an unnatural death has taken place,

police have got no option
but to at least register

an accidental death report.

So in this case, it's really very,
very shocking…

the police did not register
the accidental death report,

did not register the murder,
did not investigate the case.

There was someone very,
very powerful behind it.

[Vidhie] When my mom was arrested,

my connection with her
was completely cut off.

I just remember my father being
ever so confused with what's happening.

He was very much there for me
as a support at that point.

But in a house full of people,

from my dad's side of the family,

very… instantly ready to, kind of…

believe that she has done this
and you know, "How could she do this?"

And everyone's…
Sure, everyone is equally as shocked

and everyone is straight up, like,
"What the fuck is going on?"

But rather than sitting down
and trying to figure what's going on,

everyone's mind was made up.

[Sahil] I got a call from
one of my reporter that,

"The police, they have arrested somebody
called Indrani Mukerjea."

Then it suddenly struck me that,
okay, Indrani Mukerjea is…

that Indrani Mukerjea. You know?

[reporters clamoring]

The first day, I remember,

all the channels ran
that Indrani Mukerjea killed her sister,

which was believable.
You know, that happens.

The brother killing brother,
sister killing sister. That happens.

But how could she manage to hide it
for three years?

This happened in 2012,
she's been arrested in 2015.

How could she manage to do that?

[reporter] Sources tell India Today
that the matter came to light

after an informer tipped off the police

about Indrani Mukerjea's alleged role
in murdering her sister,

in connivance with her driver.

Now the police grilled Indrani's driver,
Shyamvar Rai for hours,

after which he confessed to the crime.

After this crucial admission,
the cops summoned Indrani Mukerjea

and grilled her
for three-and-a-half hours yesterday,

eventually arresting her.

[tense music playing]

This entire case against Indrani Mukerjea

is built on the confessions
that had been given,

the testimony of Shyamvar Rai.

The driver, who was employed
by Indrani Mukerjea herself.

[Dattatraya] I did my service
in the police department for 35 years.

When a person comes before the police,
there's a fear factor.

And…

it's human nature

that if someone goes
in front of the police,

then that person is frightened.

Shyamvar Rai, he disclosed
that in the year 2012,

he, along with Indrani Mukerjea…

had murdered Sheena Bora.

[suspenseful music playing]

It's not a complicated case.
It's a simple murder case.

[Sahil] Even today, I think
that in the beginning,

Mumbai police also did not get
the enormity of the case.

They just thought it was going to be
a very juicy case for the media.

"We have managed to crack
the case after three years."

"So we are going to get
a pat on our back."

That's it.

The next day,
we started getting information

that police teams have gone to Calcutta,

to Guwahati.

Then we realized that
there might be more accused

involved in the case as well.

The latest that's coming in from Kolkata.

Indrani Mukerjea,
her second husband Sanjeev Khanna,

has now been just arrested.

[news anchor 2]
The police are suspecting him

to be one of the co-conspirators.

As per sources, he was in the car
along with Indrani and Shyamvar Rai

on the 24th of April 2012,

when Indrani picked up Sheena
from outside the college,

and he, apparently, had helped
Indrani kill Sheena.

So that's the allegation against him.

Do you agree to the allegations?

Details of Sanjeev's statement,

Indrani's ex-husband confirmed
that Sheena was strangled and killed.

But he claims he was in the car,
but he slept through the entire murder.

What's surprising is,

of Sanjeev Khanna,

who is the ex-husband of Indrani Mukerjea,
and they also have a daughter, Vidhie.

I cannot fit into this puzzle

is Sanjeev, my biological father.

He really seems like the anomaly
in this whole thing.

He had really nothing to do
with anything, any of us,

apart from just being my father.

When it first came out,
it was a pretty airtight story.

Everyone got excited by the fact that,

a saucy enough story that,

we've got the driver." I mean, it…

it makes the perfect montage, you know!

It's the… It's the next bestseller.

Makes a great movie, sure.
But this is a real story.

It's not as black and white as that.

[Rajdeep] You see, until the Sheena Bora
murder case happened,

we knew Indrani Mukerjea

purely through the lens
of being Peter's wife

and being this ambitious
corporate media baroness.

Indrani, as per the police version,
killed Sheena in cold-blooded murder.

The focus has been to find out "Why?"

It becomes about finding her backstory.

Let's go and find out "Where did life
start for Indrani Mukerjea?"

"Who is Indrani Mukerjea?"

So, I think a lot of time was spent
in going and meeting people

who knew both Sheena,
and who knew Indrani.

One of the crucial players in this

is Indrani Mukerjea's brother,
Mekhail Bora.

I am the brother of late Sheena Bora.

This is my home,

where me and Sheena was born.

when I saw it in the news,

Indrani has murdered Sheena…

The events that are unfolding
are so shocking

that people just don't know
what to make of it.

There is a certain expectation you have
of the mother figure in India.

in our culture, I think.

in our dominant religion.

The country is about the mother,
it's Mother India.

Everything is about the mother.

The fact that someone who was a mother

could possibly commit this murder
and kill her own daughter

is unimaginable.

[news anchor] The Mumbai
police commissioner has confirmed

that Sheena was
Indrani Mukerjea's daughter

from an unknown previous relationship.

Then they got to know that
she's a daughter from the first husband.

And nobody knew who that guy was.

Sheena Bora's murder mystery
is embroiled

amidst complicated relationships.

Who's married to whom
and who sired the child

are puzzling Mumbai Police to no end.

From my very childhood
till I was 15,

there was totally, uh…
no contact at all with Indrani.

Giving birth to children

and then leaving them behind
is not how it is done.

She wanted to wipe out her past.

She has hidden the fact that
we are her children from Peter,

and even Vidhie.

Big revelations on the Sheena murder case.

Peter Mukerjea has spoken
with India Today,

and he's told us that he knew Sheena
as Indrani's sister.

My son, at one point
who was in a relationship with Sheena,

had said to me that, you know,
"Sheena… This is not correct."

"She is not her sister,
she is her daughter."

But I dismissed that at the time,

because I didn't think that that was true,
and I said,

"Look, my Indrani has told me
that that is not so."

And I obviously believed my wife.

So, I continued to maintain that,

so much so that it caused a rift between
me and my son as a consequence.

Very rarely would you come across

such a complex set of relationships,

where the son of the current husband

is seeing the daughter of Indrani's
previous marriage.

[Sahil] Peter Mukerjea,
Peter's first wife, two sons.

Rahul Mukerjea.
He stays here.

Then there is Indrani Mukerjea,
who has three husbands,

two former husbands,
all of them alive.

Second husband involved in killing.

His daughter is now daughter
of Peter Mukerjea.

The first husband,
his daughter is Sheena Bora.

She gets involved with Rahul Mukerjea.

So… Peter's son, Indrani's daughter,
are involved.

This is something very interesting
for the Indian audiences.

There is no Kardashian family
here in India, right?

[reporter] Was this the reason,

the proximity between Rahul and Sheena,

that led to the murder?

[Sahil] Both Indrani and Peter
were against this relationship

between Rahul and Sheena.

[Vidhie] Things were, like, very bad then.

Sheena and Rahul had kind of broken off
from the rest of the family

because they were like,
"We want to do our thing."

My mom and Sheena
were just at a horrible place.

They were having so many fights. Um…

A lot of nasty, nasty words
exchanged between everyone.

Rahul had been asking Indrani and Peter

as to, "Why is it that Sheena
has not returned

after meeting Indrani?"

He kept calling up Indrani,
he kept calling Peter to know,

and according to Rahul,
she kept changing her stand.

That's something Rahul had,
you know, got suspicious about

and that is the reason why he has
recorded these conversations.

Papa, listen, it's not just me, okay?

All of her friends, right?
Her Facebook, her internet, her work.

They… People from her work have come
home looking for her

saying that she is very conscientious
at work.

She's never missed a day.
In three years,

she's never missed a day
without informing.

Now she's been… She's been gone for more
than two or three days,

and she hasn't informed anyone.

This is why it's out of character.

that if Indrani has done this,

how could Peter not have
any idea about it?

Why didn't he trust his own son

when Rahul Mukerjea was desperately
trying to make him believe

that Indrani's lying?

pinpointed in for something again?

I haven't done anything.
I haven't withheld anything from anyone.

All I'm trying to do is find
my bloody fiancée,

who someone picked up and moved!

God knows where
and God knows what situation she's in.

you know, telling you that I was sitting
talking to her bloody boss?

Where the hell is she?

as a parent, as a father,

not be worried that your son
is so traumatized that his fiancée…

is missing and missing
for three years?

in this case is,

"What did the family members,
all of them, do for three years

in seriously trying to track
where Sheena was?"

[Vidhie] It was very weird
because suddenly I got emails from her

from a different account.

Didn't really sound like Sheena.

"Missing you," all of these things.

But I didn't, like, question as to why…

you know, "Why is there
a different email?"

[Mekhail] Indrani told my grandparents
and me

that Sheena's gone for higher studies
to United States.

And she even told us
that for a couple of months,

she wants to get settled down
in that place

and she doesn't want anyone to contact.

And when she is comfortable,
she will contact back us.

Indrani wasn't a full-fledged,
professional criminal

for me to suspect her
of having murdered someone.

I trusted everything she said.

Indrani said, "Sheena is gone,"
and I accepted it.

[Vidhie] So, Mekhail
and Sheena were quite close.

Obviously. I mean,
they were brother and sister.

They've been together since the time
they were born, essentially.

It was one of those underlying,
kind of unspoken connections, you know.

I was never close to Mekhail.
I never felt, you know…

I never felt… right around him.

With Sheena, it was…

Today, I feel like it was almost cosmic,
you know? It was… It was instant.

There was just that love between us.

I can talk about my memories with her.

But when I start thinking
about all of this,

the reality is that she's…
I've not seen her,

I've not heard her voice
for, like, over ten years,

since 2012.

I just… I don't know, I… I…

I don't even know what to make out of it.

It's a really tough nut
for me to crack because I just…

I'm not willing to accept…

this reality right now.

[reporter] As of now, Indrani has not been
cooperating with the Mumbai police.

She's been constantly saying
that her daughter is in the U.S.,

as far as she knows,
and she has not been killed.

That certainly is not helping
Mumbai police's case,

and that is why they need
some more evidence,

which would actually establish the fact

that these people were involved
in the killing of her daughter.

It will be a challenge
for Mumbai police to gather proof

for the murder committed three years ago.

A special team from Mumbai
will be sent to Raigad.

As the dead body
was buried for three years,

a forensic team will also be sent along

to recover the evidence.

[Ganesh] At four o'clock in the morning,

the Mumbai police
from Khar Police Station came.

I was shocked to see

that so many policemen came to my place
so early in the morning.

They told me that they have come regarding
the incident that happened in 2012.

But it was raining,
and due to the darkness,

I couldn't show them the exact location.

[dogs barking]

It took five to six hours
for us to find the body.

They packed the skeleton in a plastic bag…

and took it to Mumbai
for further processing.

We still do not know
who tried to dump the case in 2012.

All we know is that a murder took place,

a particular person committed the murder,

but we really do not know
about the larger conspiracy.

Who contacted and prevailed
over the police not to register the case?

Now, this certainly had happened

because of some powerful,
invisible hand at play.

[reporter] The latest is that
the Mumbai police will jointly interrogate

the three key players who allegedly
killed Sheena Bora,

her mother, Indrani Mukerjea,
her stepfather, Sanjeev Khanna,

and Indrani's driver.

The trio will be interrogated by the
Mumbai Police Commissioner, Rakesh Maria.

Just to give you a little bit background,
Rakesh Maria is "the" Rakesh Maria.

He was the head of Mumbai Crime Branch,

and Mumbai Crime Branch
is an ace investigating agency.

At least, the Mumbai media always like
to compare it with the Scotland Yard.

He's the one who cracked
the Indian Mujahideen case,

cracked the '93 blast case.

He's the one who was in charge
of the investigation

of 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

He knew very well who Peter Mukerjea
and Indrani Mukerjea are.

Who are they for the media,
for the Indian audiences.

He understands that there is
a media attention to this case.

He will come out of the police station
at 8:30, exactly at the prime time.

He knew that everybody is going
to cut that press conference live.

This morning, we have recovered
the skeletal remains

of the deceased Sheena Bora.

We've also recovered…

Sheena Bora's passport…

This would negate the theory…

Sheena Bora went to the U.S.

like the Sheena Bora murder case

into a crime drama,

then the police are also very much part
of the cast

that is part of this drama
unfolding in front of you.

And they know it!

that this is not a case
that is going to play out in anonymity.

where the bigger the headline,

the… the more sensational it is,

the more likely it is to trend.

my dad was this person
who didn't know anything at the time,

my stepbrothers, it was… "Oh, poor Rahul."

For me, it was a really spoiled,
kind of bratty child.

But whoever's interested in this case

should keep Sheena
at the very forefront of their head.

This whole thing is about Sheena.

There is a person
who's died in all of this.

You know, let's give our viewers a larger
understanding on what is taking place.

[reporter] Police sources have revealed
gruesome details of the murder.

[reporter 2] The Mumbai police are saying
that in the evening, at around 6:30,

Indrani called Sheena at Bandra,
near National College.

Rahul was with Sheena
at that particular time.

This is the famous
Linking Road in Bandra,

and this building here,
right outside this store,

is where Indrani and Sanjeev
allegedly picked up Sheena.

Did she…
Did she get dropped off to Amarsons

in the night or in the morning?

that she met Indrani?

[Peter] 25th, Indrani was going
to Calcutta,

so it was the 24th at night.

taken it off.

she hasn't been in touch.

she was taken at a lonely
and isolated spot.

that Indrani and Sanjeev Khanna
strangled Sheena…

the accused returned

to Peter Mukerjea's home in Worli.

[reporter 4] That night, they kept
the dead body in this very bungalow,

inside their garage, inside their car.

[reporter 5] Indrani Mukerjea
apparently put makeup on Sheena's body

so that her body would look fresh

and no one would assume
that there was a problem.

And then the body was taken to Raigad
early in the morning.

Rahul, see, if she wanted to contact you,

she would've contacted you, Rahul.
